*CORRECTION - Shania Twin, Not Twain, To Attend Fund-Raising Event In Ohio - June 22

June 22 Army Band concert is free to public

Sponsors happy to bring family-oriented, tribute performance to Marion community

By Brenda J. Donegan

MARION, OHIO - For better than 60 years the United States Army Field Band has entertained from Miami to Minneapolis and Saigon to San Juan. They will present a concert here on the stage of the Palace Theatre 1 p.m. Sunday, June 22. All persons must be in their seats by 12:45 p.m.

The band, which tours certain sections of the world each year was not scheduled to be in Ohio this season, but learned Marion could be on their way from Point A to Point B and agreed for a stop, said Glen Coble, marketing manager for Marion Community Credit Union, which is the primary sponsor for the concert.

Coble said he has been working on the project to get the band to Marion for more than a year, adding the local community was passed over in October 2007. Coble, a former member of the band during the Vietnam War, said he had responsibility of being the sound engineer and booking advance man for the band, which gave him insight to bring the band to Marion.

"One of the things the credit union focused on this year is community and family," Coble said. "It seemed like a natural fit.

"It's family-oriented, a tribute to our country, and clean, wholesome fun. It seems to be natural for Marion. Lower and middle class families struggle to fund entertainment for their family. It's a wonderful opportunity for the community - especially the youth."

The Palace stage is slightly smaller than the field band requires, Coble noted, adding the Palace is pulling back its curtains and lifting the legs on both sides in order to accommodate the band of 65 and a mixed chorus of 29 members.

"That (concert) will be nice," added Elaine Merchant, executive director the Palace Theatre, a co-sponsor for the event. "It will be lovely to have them in our theater. It will be a huge concert. I hope people do take advantage of this."

Merchant also noted June 22 is a huge day not only for the Palace but the community as the Marion Township firefighters will also hold a fund-raising event with Shania Twain on the Palace stage that evening.

"This is just going to be an exciting day for the Palace," Merchant said. Media sponsors for the concert at WDCM Community Radio and The Marion Star.

Coble said he helped create a folk music group of three high school musicians in 1962, which they called the Overland Singers. They were asked to audition for the United States Army Field Band as a featured act for the band.

"The Vietnam war was raging so the three of us were very interested in being a part of the national touring band of the Army stationed at Fort Meade, Md., just outside Washington D.C.," Coble said.

After auditioning they were informed the band would like for them to become a part of the band. The three were told to get their enlistment physicals which the other two passed and he failed due to an infection. In the summer of 1968, he took his second physical which he passed and was shipped to Fort Leonardwood, Mo., for basic training and then ordered to report to the Army Field Band upon completion of basic. His first "gig" he said was to march in the inaugural parade of President Richard Nixon in January 1969. He said he was a vocalist but was given a clarinet and told to pretend he was playing in order to fill out the ten by 10 ranks that band marches in.

He said his trio played before audiences with the Army Field Band from the deep south to Quito, Ecuador.

Coble said he wanted the folks of Marion to experience the Army Field Band and for youth of the community to be able to get a feel of the pride and patriotism members of the band have.

"I want to make Marion as proud of the community as I am," he said. "I've only been here three years. I want to be an instrument of making the youth of Marion proud of Marion."

RE: Shania To Attend Fund-Raising Event In Ohio - June 22

WHAT....The Marion firefighters????....If anybody out there gets this one...PLEASE TELL ME...I hate to sound sour but this sounds insane..If it was April fools I would be it is a joke..When one thinks of all the events and places she could appear..Really got to wonder what is pushing Shania's buttons right now...Bob

I have to agree with you Bob I don't get this one. The only thing I can think of is that this organization supports charities Shania is interested in. If she is coming out with new music in the fall than June/July is when we would be hearing new music. I don't know about this it sounds so weird to be true. But maybe she thinks she can ease back into the limelight by attending this venue?

Marion Ohio...Population 35,000...This is a town..Not a city...AND...Get this..Popcorn capitol of the world(whatever that means)...Either Shania is losing it or something else is up...OR...maybe just a craving for carmel corn..  Any other  thoughts???

They probably meant Shania TWIN, not Shania Twain. There's no way that Shania is going to skip the CMT Awards, skip the CMA Awards, yet show up in Marion Ohio, as her first public U.S appearance in years.

LOL!
Yeah, I just posted the same thing about it probably being Shania TWIN or even SHARIA at the other boards. But hey, this is one thing that I would be glad to be proven wrong.

To be fair these rumours and stories also start or spread on those other two big boards too. I think this story may have broke on here but it didn't take long for the same poster to start a thread over at the Shania Forums and the North American board as well. Also people on here didn't believe there was anything in this from the start- just didn't add up.

All I did was post an article that said SHANIA TWAIN was attending a fund-raiser. It's not my fault THE MARION STAR didn't have the facts straight.

i have to say,and that doesn't mean that i'm kissy-kissy,that Tommy was always one of the first to report news on shania,he's just post everything he finds out there,if something is innacurate is not his fault.
i've been visiting this site for many years now,and it is the best fan site around.

I have to agree. Tommy's site is the best Shania based fan site out there. It definately was not his fault that the first release of information was wrong. Besides no one hear really believed she would attend this. Tommy your the best, keep up the good work

WELL SORRY FOLKS....This is what I understand VERY clearly...Tommy posted a report from an article...The article was I would suggest close to insane...According to the bias views I am reading ,nothing is wrong...I have little time for bias views...Why...Because they are bias....Based on the views that I have read on this issue ...pretty much anything goes...If I find an article in a newspaper stating Shania is to begin serving at Hooters...POST IT..When it turns out to be false....ALL I SAID is what the article reported....So...NO...I will not be bias..I totally understand that quite often the "high" of breaking a story is quite often bigger than the story itself....Did Tommy do all that much wrong by chosing to post an idiotic story??.. In fairness to him...I will ride the fence as it was not as out there as my hooters example an yes it was a news article....BUT...If it was Tommy that broke it on forums I totally understand why they are laughing their heads off...And don't try to tell me that we would not be doing the same if Paul head broke it. I have broke stupid stories..I am man enough to admit it...I guess right now I feel that our friend Newfie boy has the best handle of all of us but NOBODY will listen..He has pounded us over and over not to believe a thing (that has to do with her carreer) if it does not turn up on official sites. How many times must he be right before we ALL learn..  Bob
