Welcome" to Timmins?

Posted By Alison Monette

Having returned to live in Timmins after living away for 25 years, I decided to bring my out of town visitors to the Shania Twain Centre, Timmins' only tourist attraction. As soon as we entered the driveway to the Centre, we were greeted with danger signs, keep away signs, a warning to watch out for golf carts etc, before we even got to the gates of the Centre. The once beautiful Hollinger Golf course is now overgrown with 2 foot tall grass and weeds, and to your left, lopsided golf cart shacks, albeit they are painted a uniform colour. It really made me wonder what was so attractive and welcoming about this well publicized attraction. What is going on? Couldn't the old golf course be mowed and utilized as another park/picnic setting in our community?

Great displays the tour at the Centre though!!

Here is a response from Tracy:-

The grass on the golf course could be cut but I would say it is FAR from looking abandoned and run down. There is one small spot with danger signs and it is because there is active drilling going on there. The area surrounding the outer perimeter of the STC is fenced (has been for years) and not because of sink holes but because the land is not the STC's and Goldcorp has chosen to fence their land for security purposes.

Imagine driving down the highway past fields that have tall grass.........do you feel like someone should be mowing them so you can have a better view???? The grass at the entrance of Shania Twain Drive (our property) is well maintained as is the grass around the centre (our property).........I won't be calling Goldcorp to ask them to mow there former golf course anytime soon.....sorry! We have added additional flower beds on our property as well, and they are very nice.

I guess maybe we should contact all property owners that tourists drive by on route to the STC and ask them to clean up their properties so it is more appealing to those visiting the centre.........sorry for the long response but I tire of complaints over minor issues. Has anyone noticed the soldiers dieing overseas, or the price of gas, or global warming........or are they just focussed on the 500 ft of grass they drive by, the one and only time they visit the STC??

My rant is complete. I won't post here again because I don't want to spend anymore personal energy on the issue.

Alison Monette is that observant, she even cared to comment on the colour of the golf cart shacks. As the expression goes, some people like making a mountain out of a molehill. Tracy's response is spot on.

Gas prices raise ire of venters

A recent criticism in your editorial column about the approach to the Shania Twain Centre is so true. The most beautiful structure in the city and where do they put it? No wonder it's a white elephant.

Another person appears to be unimpressed.
