Pop Legend Michael Jackson Dead at 50

Pop Legend Michael Jackson Dead at 50

Thursday, June 25, 2009

His brother Jermaine Jackson confirmed Jackson 's death from suspected cardiac arrest at a press conference Thursday evening.

Jermaine Jackson said his brother's physician was with him at his home at the time of his suspected cardiac arrest, and both the physician and the paramedics who transported Jackson to the UCLAMedicalCenter attempted to resuscitate him.

"Upon arriving at the hospital at approximately 1:14 p.m. a team of doctors, including emergency physicians and cardiologists, attempted to resuscitate him for a period of more than one hour, but they were unsuccessful," he said.

"My family request that the media please respect our privacy during this time, and may all love be with you Michael, always. We love you."

The L.A. County Coroner's Office has taken possession of Jackson's body and an autopsy is expected Friday.

Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Lt. Greg Strenk said the department's robbery-homicide department was investigating Jackson's death because of the high-profile nature of the pop star.

Multiple reports said he had gone into cardiac arrest, though the official cause of death wasn't immediately known. A news conference is expected later Thursday at the hospital, where fans have gathered to pay tribute to the singer.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

Jackson was born in Indiana in 1958. He rose to fame as part of the successful pop group The Jackson 5, formed with his brothers in 1967. The group went on to earn four number one hits in 1970 alone, and the 12-year-old Jackson became the undeniable breakout star of the group.

In 1972, Jackson enjoyed his first solo hit with the song “Ben.” Six years later, he made his film debut in “The Wiz,” in which he renewed his friendship with producer Quincy Jones.

Collaborating with Jones, Jackson went on to become remarkably successful with his solo efforts “Off The Wall” in 1979 and “Thriller” in 1982.

From there, Jackson went on to become the undeniable “King of Pop,” winning eight Grammy awards for “Thriller” alone.

During the 1980s, he became an icon with a distinct style of fashion and performing, as well, wearing one sparkling glove, bejeweled military clothing and short pants with socks.

It was around this time that Jackson began experimenting with excessive cosmetic surgery, including lightening of his skin.

In 1992, Jackson founded the "Heal the World Foundation," a charity that brought underprivileged children to his Neverland Ranch, where Jackson would spend time with them and allow them to stay the night.

This practice raised many eyebrows, especially when Jackson was accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy who had become a regular Neverland guest. Jackson maintained his innocence. In 1994, he settled the case out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Jackson briefly was married to Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis. The union drew intense public scrutiny, there was speculation as to whether the marriage was simply an attempt to improve Jackson’s image, though he maintained that they lived genuinely as husband and wife; however, the marriage broke up after less than two years.

From there, his career never quite recovered, but he remained in the news, making headline after headline for strange and unusual behavior, including dangling his child over a balcony in Germany in 2002.

In 2004, police raided the Neverland Ranch, issuing an arrest warrant for charges of child molestation based on allegations of a boy who had appeared in Martin Bashir's infamous documentary about Jackson. Later that year, a man filed a lawsuit against him, alleging he had been molested 20 years earlier, explaining that he had repressed the memory until 2003. However, a judge eventually dismissed the lawsuit.

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested the 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of playing the boy with alcohol and groping him. The case took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.

Jackson was preparing for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping dance moves, elaborate staging and throbbing dance beats.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson's rented home, was roped off with police tape.

In New York's Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

"No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow," Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend sent to his telephone. "It's like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died."

FOXNews.com's Allison McGevna and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

There is a site on utube that shows Michael watching Shania at some show. Maybe Tommy could put link on here. I would but still am too stupid to know how.

Footage of Michael Jackson watching Shania Twain performing "If Your Not In It For Love Im Outta Here" at the World Music Awards 1996. (His thoughts are pretty obvious just look at his face)

I find rather curious that just a week ago if anyone asked about Michael Jackson to the general public they would say he was a nutcase hasbeen child molester(don't forget although not convicted in california in 1995 court he did pay off one victim over 20 million dollars in 1993)
But now after he died all of a sudden he is such a wonderful person who was a God according to CNN,
These same media people who are praising him like God because he died were the same ones talking crap about him when he was alive.
Lets not forget Michael Jackson was totally irrelvant in North America for over a decade and was thought of as a freak show.
He had enormous talent and made some great music in my opinion and influenced a generation of music artists but he isn't God and lets not forget that although not convicted of horrible crimes against children, he looked more than guilty.
I personally find CNN and the media's coverage of this disgraceful and over the top.
Michael Jackson was a great music artist and had huge talent but the last 15 years of his life was laced with allegations, weirdness and unsuccessful albums.
Just because someone died you can't sugar coat his whole career.

The autopsy shows Michael was not a very well person and I think this explains why he has been quieter in recent years. He was the most well known person on the planet and his life became impossible because of it. I think he did well not to completely break down because of it. The reason he made the out of court settlement was because it was dragging on for years and making him ill, it was a lot of money but not to him at the time and it was worth it to get his life back, imagine being in court everyday for years on end...

I agree the same ppl who were against him last week are now either quiet or saying how great he was. And the media always were a disgrace, they are only being nice to him now because the public would not accept it if they were their usual way with him. I feel for the guy, the allegations are disgusting and never proven, in fact many of those who tried to sue him were proven to be lying themselves, or admitted they did.

Michael wasnt a God, but to many ppl he was their main influence in life and an icon. Just as with Shania, except his impact is more global and a thousand times that of Shania. He has had it much tougher than Shania during his career, no doubt about it, both had hard times but Michaels during his career have been much harder, he also had a marriage breakdown, prescription drug addiction (which probably killed him), terrible pain from injuries and accidents, he has been in court so many times, so many terrible allegations, zero privacy unlike Shania who can occassionally go out. This guy has had no normal life at any point, I feel for him and he never complained. He gets my respect and I will miss him.

I do disagree but the allegations not proven.
Nobody pays somebody over 20 million just to go away and have their reputation ruined for life. There was something to the allegations.
Even in the trial in 2005 some jury members said he probably did it but they couldn't convict him. Just listening to all the kid victims on the stand crying proves to me there was something to it.
I agree the allegations are digusting but they may very well be true.
That in my opinion overshadows anything he has every done.
ONe victim was a cancer patient.
So yes he made great music but his life was tragic and mostly because of his doing.
Even early on in the 80's with he weird act where he wanted to be mysterious and an engima.
No doubt he weird freaky act was part of his global appeal.
I respect him as an artist and great talent but there are many disturbing parts of his life that everyone is ignoring now.

Well I'd like to think someone is innocent until proven guilty. If those who took him to court cared enough about justice surely they would have not accepted the money, they would have been awarded huge amounts like that anyway if they had won which actually makes me think they were trying it on. To Michael Jackson, he had just signed the biggest recording contract in history, wasnt it $800,000 or something? So $20m was not so much to him if he could get his life back. Being in court for years every day was stopping him having a life and we will never knwo the effect it was having on his health, with all the media involved too.

Michael had been stitched up so many times by ppl like this and the media that he had to secretly film everything in case he ever had to prove himself. One time a reporter did an interview for TV, a huge exclusive, and he editted the tape to make it look like MJ had said things he hadnt. When the show went out it caused uproar, but then MJ released the secret tape which the interviewer didnt know about, and it proved MJ had done nothing wrong. It was very sad to see ppl do that to him. Imagine having to do that, film everything 24/7 to prove your innocence in case someone tries to do that. Since he started doing that nobody took him to court...figure it out.

I think most people loved his music. His life will probably be the source of countless books in the future. I think his life was tragic. It looks like he needed some kind of help he never found. Just points us all to how brief and precious life really is. Celine Dion is suppose to do a news show about him, how he influenced her? She did dress up as him in one of her Vegas shows. It looked kind of bizarre.

I just think there will be fans and people who think he was never a child molester nomatter what the proof was and there was lots of proof.
Like I said you don't pay someone money just to go away and have your reputation ruined for life.  Thats what he did.
If you have the money and didn't do it then fight for your reputation unless you don't want the horrible facts to come out in detail like they eventually came out in the 2005 trial. Even some of the  jury thought he was guilty but couldnt' convict him.
I guess we will never know for sure the truth. But this taints his  legacy by quite a bit. And I think many will think of Michael the child molester instead of his great music. LIke I said he was totally irrelevant in North America for over 15 years and was not the biggest star in music for a long time. But then he dies and the media jumps on the band wagon. But he was the biggest freak show in the world, there is no doubt about that. But his recent music in the last longest time wasn't relevant and neither was he until he did something weird again.
That doesn't take away from his talent but just stating the obvious.

My point is that he will spend the whole rest of his life in court defending himself, he had no life. Morally yes that would be the idea situation but would you want to spend your entire life in court? The guy had enough, he wanted his life back. That case could have dragged on for years and he was a poorly man.

Anyway I didnt see any of this proof you mention, but I did see proof of how many of these scummy ppl tried to frame him and were caught out as liars though. The law should be tougher on these ppl, if they are found to be lying they should be prosecuted themselves.

I think anyone who sat through that trial saw lots of proof.
Sorry but if you are innocent you fight for your name nomatter how long it takes and you don't let everyone think of you as a molester.
So when he payed off the first victim in 1993 that ruined his reputation forever.

Well thats your choice to believe it if it makes you happy. I never saw any proof, maybe if you could show me some I might agree with you but I'm sorry I just dont think there ever was any...

I will remember him for being the entertainer he was, the boy and man who made the world a much better place and who the world is a much worse place without.

I agree there is no proof the MJ is a child molester. He did put himself in harms way when he did the interview where he said he had kids sleep in is bed.Its just not normal for a 40 year old man.But it was proved that both families were looking for money. In the first case the family took money rather then prosecute a child molester, nice people. To say MJ is guilty because he paid 20 million is silly, like a trial would have been a better option for his reputation. What about all the other kids that have stayed at Neverland, there where hundreds and only 2 families complained. One took money and the other was willing to settle for money.

Precisely...

It would be nice if ppl didnt focus on the few negatives (which I dont think are facts anyway). Michael Jackson is the biggest star the world has ever seen and that is not an opinion, its a fact. Bigger than Elvis, John Lennon, everybody. We will never see such creativity again I'm sure of that. But most importantly of all he was a wonderful human being and made the world a better place. I feel like he was too good for this world, too caring and open to ridicule and abuse throughout his entire life. How many artists have written songs which actually aim to make the world a better place? And so many songs like that, songs about love and hope.

Bill Clinton was bigger and so is the pope and so are many other people.
In fact Michael Jackson wasn't a big star or relevant in North America for over 15 years.
He was only relevant when he acted weird or did something stupid again.
And how is the world worse off without him?
The majority of people could careless who Michael Jackson was.
There are billions of people in the world and most of those people Michael Jackson has made no impact at all.
IN my school nobody listened to Michael Jackson music.
I think it is the media again overblowing things making him out to be bigger in death than he ever was alive.

Would i call MJ a child molester NO,but if a had a young son i wouldn't let him sleep over either. He is a very talented person but i think a very sad person also. The fact that he had no childhood i think is what made him into a strange fellow. As far as the two cases against him,he put himself into bad situations that after the case in the 90's he should have learned.

Just because he did not release music that was played on radio during the past years does NOT make him irrelevant. He changed the way videos and pop music sounded and looked like forever. His influence is everywhere. I am willing to highly bet that Shania's ideas for her videos were influenced by Michael Jackson. He is a legend. And only a fool discounts his legacy and influence because he has not been active the past 10 or so years. It is like saying that Shania does not influence anyone or is now nothing or her CD sales mean nothing because she has not released new music for a long time.

He is the biggest selling artist of all time. More ppl in the world have bought his music than any other artist in world history. He absolutely is the most famous man in the world. Kids in other countries dont know who the Pope or Bill Clinton is but they know Michael Jackson, and that is when he has been quieter than in the 1970's 80's and early 1990s.

Nobody is more famous.

And it also has to do with respect. EVERY star's light fades. EVERY star has a tougher time getting played on radio. EVERY star had his/her moment in the sun. But that does not mean that you do not recognize everything that they did for the industry and how big an influence they were. You do not throw people under the bus and forget about them just because they are not currently being played on MTV.

I was just pointing out that if you asked the general public 1 week about Michael Jackson they most would say he was a nutcase hasbeen.
We all know he is a music icon but the North American  press trashed him for over a a decade and his albums didn't do well but now he is dead everybody is saying how they miss him.
Oh please, he is just a music artist, he doesn't cure disease.
He hasn't had a hit in music in a long time so how were we going to miss him.

That is so not true. My grandmother doensn't know who Michael Jackson is.
Kids in third world countries know many artists. He isn't the only music they listen to.
Bill Clinton? When he was president every single person knew who he was, the leader of the free world is always the most famous person and the pope.

I just commented here because I saw CNN's over the top coverage of this . I reall liked some of Michaels music and dance moves but he had no impact on my life.
But considering CNN spend a week straight top story coverage of Paris Hilton going to jail a few years ago this is what I expected from CNN which is more of tabloid news these days.

Oh no I dont agree...his only mission was happiness, he was forced to perform. He never had a choice, he was famous before even knowing what it was like to be a teenager. He wasnt freaky in the 70s and early 80s yet was already established. He was never going to have the choice of a normal life, and because he had no normal childhood he grew up regretting that, he saw the innocence of children and saw how cruel adults could be, so he enjoyed hanging out with children and having animals, what you see is what you get with them. He was a big child, but what is the harm in that? He had the money to do what he wanted, build Neverland, as most children would do if they could afford. I dont think he was a freak at all, he pushed the boundaries, made fantastic fantasy videos and was an amazing dancer. He was wonderful.

He got really strange after he stopped performing. Some people where saying he did that because he liked the attention. But as far as his fame goes,he sold out 50 concerts instantly and there was demand for more. This from a singer who hadn't worked in years.I wonder if Shania could even pull that off.

I just heard something on the news that could cause problems.Someone is saying that it wasn't MJ sperm that was used in creating the kids it was his doctors and it wasn't Debbie Rowe's eggs.Problem is MJ never adopted the kids so he has no biological claim to the kids weird stuff.

Michael Jackson's family may await return of brain before burial

The family may be waiting for Michael Jackson's brain to be released before burying him

Michael Jackson lay in his golden casket at his memorial service without his brain. The Los Angeles coroner confirmed today that the organ was retained to carry out tests.

The death certificate, which was signed by Jackson’s sister La Toya, lists the cause of death as deferred.

“As soon as we are done with the brain, we will return it,” Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner, said. “The last I heard, they are not burying the body yet.”

It is still not known where Jackson will be buried. His body was transported to the memorial service on Tuesday from Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood’s “cemetery of the stars”. The absence of a burial has revived hopes by fans that Jackson will be laid to rest at his Neverland ranch, or be cremated and have his ashes sprinkled there. “I have friends buried at Forest Lawn and it’s really, really peaceful, but Neverland is where he called home,” Vena Knipple, a book-keeper and fan, said.

The family may be waiting for Jackson’s brain to be released before burying him. They have reportedly filed for a burial permit with the vital records department in Los Angeles County, suggesting that the body will be interred in Los Angeles rather than Neverland, in Santa Barbara County.

Ken Ehrlich, who produced the Jackson memorial, said today that the Jackson family had insisted on a church-style service — not a television show. “We were kind of mandated to bring Michael home in church,” Ehrlich said on The Early Show on CBS. He said that he gulped when he learnt that the casket would be taken to the service. He said that Jackson’s physical presence “lifted everything” at the memorial.

The memorial, described by the Los Angeles Times as “sombre, evangelical, thunderous and hushed”, won widespread acclaim in the US press. The New York Times called it a “religious pageant meets awards show” and The Washington Post described it as “part musical feast, part religious experience, part examination of a man who seemed not a man, but something else his public was always trying to figure out”.

The coroner is awaiting the result of toxicology tests amid reports that Jackson abused prescription drugs, including the anaesthetic propofol, which is marketed as Diprivan.

Police are reportedly investigating at least five doctors who prescribed drugs to Jackson. Arnold Klein, the dermatologist in Beverly Hills who treated the star for 20 years, insisted that he had not been questioned by police.

“I was not one of the doctors who participated in giving him overdoses of drugs or too much of anything,” Dr Klein said on Good Morning America on ABC. “I was the one who limited everything, who stopped everything.”

He added: “I say that anyone who makes someone an addict or gives a person potentially dangerous substan- ces directly to them to use, like propofol, is a criminal.”

Dr Klein denied reports that he may be the biological father of Jackson’s two children with Debbie Rowe, who used to work in his office.

A version of the Neverland ranch is to be built in Chongming island, near Shanghai. It is expected to cost about 100 million yuan (£9 million) and will include a man-made lake, cinema and zoo. Jackson memorabilia will be on display. (AP)

Fans flood the internet

Internet traffic linked to the memorial service was 67% above average, making it the second-largest online traffic peak, according to Akamai Technologies, whose networks process 20% of all traffic on the internet

Use of news sites almost doubled (from 2 million visitors per minute, the average, to nearly 4 million) while use of online video streaming was up by 471%, Akamai said

9.7 million watched the event online at CNN.com, but total online figures are not yet available

On Twitter, 80,000 messages per hour included the phrase Michael Jackson, while over a million Facebook users fired off 6,000 updates per minute directly linked to CNN’s live feed of the event

Michael Jackson has 7,453,072 fans on Facebook, and counting (Barack Obama has 6,441,466).

The virtual Michael Jackson glove has become the most popular gift in the site’s history, as more than 800,000 gloves have been exchanged by Facebook friends

6.5 million watched the memorial event on TV in the UK. Estimates say at least 1 billion watched worldwide but it is not yet clear whether the figures will beat the 2.5 billion who watched Diana, Princess of Wales’s memorial service

That memorial was one of the saddest things i have ever witnessed. I couln't stop crying. I will honor MJ for being the King Of Pop not for all the bs that was made up about him which was what got him in the conditions that he was in in the first place.

I was sad. While I'm not normally teary eyed, I cried throughout the memorial. I feel sorry for MJ's children as now Michael is finally home.
