Exclusive: Shania Twain Returns to Idol!
by Shawna Malcom April 07, 2010 10:10 AM EST

She proved she had an ear for talent—and that she was smart and charming to boot—as a guest judge during American Idol’s Chicago auditions earlier this season. Now, an Idol source confirms, country-pop superstar Shania Twain is set to come on over again to the Fox reality competition, this time as a mentor to the contestants. (No word yet on what theme the Idols will tackle under Twain’s tutelage, though country would be the safe bet.)

Unlike some of Season 9’s mentors—including 17-year-old Miley Cyrus and music-biz newbie Adam Lambert—Twain has plenty of experience to draw on: The Canadian singer-songwriter has been recording for nearly two decades, sold over 65 million albums, and netted five Grammys. (If anyone can settle the should-Katie-Stevens-go-country debate once and for all, our money’s on Twain.)

“Shania really enjoyed doing the show,” says her rep. And while he wouldn’t officially confirm her repeat appearance, he adds, “She’d love to go back.”

Artists that mentor the contestants usually return the next night for the results show and sing a song. Unfortunately I highly doubt this will be the case with Shania since she doesn't have any new music.

Who knows... They invite her inspite of knowing that she's not active now. Maybe they will let her sing some old stuff or (I know it's a bold idea) we will hear the premiere of new song. :)

Shania Twain will soon be back on Idol to mentor the contestants. A few days ago, this maybe would have been cool, but everything now pales in comparison to next week's Adam Lambert episode.

Shania will be a mentor on AI soon, probably within the next month.

A new song would logically tie in to a new album.

Do you really think she'll have a new album to promote in the next month?  It's not going to happen.

In my never to be humble opinion, the new album is already done. The marketing people are putting the "makeup" on the packing of Shania's return.
I think this will be fancier than President O's glitsy campaign. But no politics right now.

Interesting theory! But here's the problem with that. Shania TV won't air until next year. Shania TV will deal with her trying to make a comeback. But what if her new album flops? She releases a new album in 2010, it flops, and Oprah is stuck with a 2011 TV show dealing with a comeback that ended badly? Oprah is a smarter businesswoman than that.

Now I don't think a Shania comeback will flop, but nothing is guaranteed.

If the TV show doesn't come out until next year, than it will allow time to accumulate stuff for the show, culminating in how she got back to the top. They're will be no failure, that's a given.

A Shania project without Mutt isn't a given. But we don't know for sure if it will be Muttless. Hey, Shania working with Mutt while sleeping with Fred would be perfect for reality TV, right?

Anyway, I think the nature of Shania TV will determine the album date. If it airs in 2011 and features material from 2010, an album could be released this year.

I would guess though that Shania TV in 2011 will actually spotlight 2011 material, and that it will run simultaneously with a new album. The two projects will feed off each other. So I expect a new album in late 2010 at the earliest. And definitely not in time to coincide with a Shania mentoring gig on American Idol.

But, who knows? New Shania isn't like old Shania anymore. She's now full of surprises.

Shania is not a puppet to Mutt the puppeteer. He is NOT the only producer out there, and she is far from lacking any intelligence of her own. She obviously has put much time and effort into any new music. She knows of what the other talent out there has been doing.

The marketing, record people are assisting her in her re-appearance. She won't fail. They know she is a potential "goldmine", and they will make it happen.

Report: Shania Twain returning to 'American Idol' to mentor finalists

By Christopher Rocchio, 04/07/2010

Shania Twain is reportedly retuning to American Idol in a different role than her first time around.

The country star -- who served as a guest judge for Chicago auditions last summer -- will serve as a musical mentor during an upcoming ninth-season broadcast, sources told TV Guide Magazine in a Wednesday report.

It is still unknown when Twain would serve as musical mentor and what the musical theme would be for that week, according to TV Guide Magazine, which added her representative would not confirm her return.

"Shania really enjoyed doing the show," the representative told TV Guide Magazine. "She'd love to go back."

Twain was one of several guest judges used by American Idol during last summer's ninth-season auditions after Paula Abdul announced she would not be returning.

Abdul's spot as a regular member of the panel was subsequently taken by Ellen DeGeneres.

'American Idol': Shania Twain Returns As Mentor

For someone who thoroughly enjoyed Shania Twain's stint as a guest judge during American Idol's auditions in Chicago, this is very good news.

TV Guide Magazine reports that the country star is returning to the reality show this year, as a mentor to the finalists.

Sources from within the show can't confirm when she'll be returning, but it's safe to say this means we'll have a country music-themed week on the horizon.

Her representative wouldn't confirm the news, but he said she enjoyed doing Idol. "She'd love to go back," he added.

So, Shania Twain as mentor this season--gotta be good news, right? Unlike Miley Cyrus and Adam Lambert--not that I'm belittling them, but Shania's got the experience to back everything she says up. And for this crop of contestants, it's a huge help.

'American Idol' welcomes Lady Antebellum

April 15, 2010 1:10 AM ET

"American Idol" is welcoming one of the hottest groups in country music to its stage -- Lady Antebellum, comprised of Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott.

Wednesday, April 14 following the live results show, the trio of country artists pre-recorded a live performance of their smash hit "Need You Now" for the lucky audience.

We were in attendance and about lost our minds when we heard who was performing. "Need You Now" is a heart-breakingly good song and we included video below in case you are unfamiliar with it. The group currently leads all nominees for the Academy of Country Music awards, which air live from Las Vegas on CBS at 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 18. Lady Antebellum is nominated for Top Vocal Group and Album of the Year for the trio and Single Record of the Year as artist and producer, Song of the Year as artist and composer and Video of the Year for "Need You Now."

There have been rumors of Shania Twain returning to "Idol" for country week and while FOX cannot confirm those rumors, Lady Antebellum's performance will surely air during Country Week on "Idol." Interestingly, lead singer Hillary Scott said during a Sirius interview that she auditioned for "Idol" twice and never even got in front of the judges -- but the trio had nothing but praise for the show because "talent's talent ... it's so hard to get a break."

This seems to say that even if Shania is a mentor for Country Week, Lady Antebellum will be the ones performing on the results show. Which now makes it even less likely that Shania will perform, even though I never thought she would in the first place.

Shania to return to "American Idol" as mentor! - April 27!

Shania is the mentor next Tuesday (April 27) and the Idols will be singing her songs! Mentors usually appear on the results show the following night as well!

Next week's theme will be the songs of former guest judge Shania Twain -- and she'll return as the mentor.

Idol Time: Tim's time is finally up

After the pomp and circumstance of Idol Gives Back, it was finally time to get down to business and eliminate one of the Top 7.

Casey James made what I believe is his first appearance in the bottom 3 tonight. Joining him were Aaron Kelly and Tim Urban.

With hardly any drama (they must have been running out of time since the show was already 20 minutes over), Ryan Seacrest announced Aaron was safe and then Tim was going home.

Tim probably overstayed his welcome by a couple of weeks so there's no argument in why he was sent packing.

Next week's theme is interesting. Shania Twain is the mentor. The contestants will be singing her songs.

I know a lot of her songs. They aren't exactly suited for men to sing. Wouldn't it have just been easier to make it a country night? Oh well. We'll see what happens.

RE: Shania to return to "American Idol" as mentor! - April 27 & 28!

The mentoring takes place over the weekend and they show a clip of the session with each Idol before they sing Tuesday night. The mentor is LIVE in the audience during Tuesday night's show. The question is, since Shania most likely will not be singing (as most mentors do) on Wednesday night's live results show, will she be on Wednesday as well?

"American Idol" will air Tuesday at 8:00-9:00pm ET/PT and Wednesday at 9:00-10:00pm ET/PT on FOX.

Rascal Flatts and Shakira to sing on next week's 'American Idol'

Not only does American Idol get Shania Twain as a mentor next week, but Rascal Flatts and Shakira will perform on Wednesday's results show. Flatts will perform their current single, Unstoppable, then sing with Shakira on her song Gypsy.

This will mark the third Idol appearance for the Flatts boys. They sang on the finale in 2005, when Carrie Underwood won, and they also appeared on the 2007 Idol Gives Back show.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/idolchatter/post/2010/04/rascal-flatts-and-shakira-to-sing-on-next-weeks-american-idol/1

No way does Shania sing on the results show now.

Yeah, Shania definitely won't be on or singing Wednesday night.  Lady Antebellum is also performing (taped last week).

'American Idol’: Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts to perform

American Idol” is going a little bit country next week.

Shania Twain on Tuesday will mentor the six finalists on songs she has performed.

On Wednesday’s results show, Lady Antebellum will sing “Need You Now” and Rascal Flatts will deliver “Unstoppable.”

Tim Urban was ejected from the singing contest last night. The six singers still in contention are front-runner Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche and Siobhan Magnus.

Who will be helped by the emphasis on country next week? I’m predicting Casey James and Aaron Kelly, who were in jeopardy of leaving the show last night.

The Tuesday show starts at 8 p.m. on Fox (WOFL-Channel 35 locally); the results show starts at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

'American Idol': Shania Twain to mentor, so what should the Top 6 sing?

By Andrea Reiher

April 22, 2010 11:40 AM ET

shania-twain-american-idol-2.jpg

Country is coming and Shania Twain is coming back to "American Idol" next week. FOX previously told Zap2it that she was not confirmed, so we're glad they got Shania locked in to mentor, as she was an excellent guest judge.

FOX also announced performances by Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts for the results show on Wednesday, April 28.

We do have to say that we wish the catalog was just country music and not specific to Shania. She's great, very talented vocalist. But her songs are in that beautiful-woman-pop-country vein and it really limits the contestants. We fear there could be some bad Kountry Karaoke in store. It will certainly be an interesting week, to say the least.

We definitely think the Idols need to steer clear of the really well-known Shania songs because we've all heard them a zillion times, plus then tend to be Women Power songs ("Any Man of Mine," "Honey, I'm Home," "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under"), though we would pay a lot of money to watch Aaron Kelly sing his little heart out on "Any Man of Mine." That should be like an "Idol" outtake.

Here are our suggestions for the Idols:

Casey James, "Crime of the Century"
This song has an old-school sound to it, very roughneck, very not-Shania. Casey could stick to his growly, guitar-playing groove within the theme. With lyrics like, "You came on like Jesse James/ You stole my heart like you were robbin' trains/ I'm gonna lock you up for life with me/ It was the crime of the century," how is this NOT a Casey song?

Lee Dewyze, "Don't"

This is the most Lee-like song of the bunch. He could make it decidedly not country and bring it into his lane very easily. Plus, it could show a more romantic side of him with lyrics like, "Don't fight, don't argue/ Give me the chance to say that I'm sorry/ Just let me love you/ Don't turn me away," which would probably serve him well as the under-the-radar-hottie.

Michael Lynche, "Forever and For Always"
"Wanna wake up every morning to your sweet face. Always." This one will have the women crying in the aisles. We all know he loves his wife and daughter, this a lovely ballad, plus it has the high stuff on "And there ain't no way I'm letting you go now," which will let Big Mike show off his gorgeous falsetto.

Siobhan Magnus, "God Bless the Child"

No, this is not a country version of the Billie Holiday song from 1941. This is Shania's song from 1995 and it's a doozy. The album version is done entirely a capella and with lyrics about hunger and homelessness and suffering children, Siobhan could have an amazing week on this song. She has the vocal chops to pull it off, we really want her to choose this piece.

Crystal Bowersox, "It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing"
Shania's version of this song is just a little on the pop-y side for Crystal, but don't imagine she'd do a carbon-copy anyway. If she busts out the guitar and some lyrics like, "And it only hurts when I'm breathing/ My heart only breaks when it's beating/ My dreams only die when I'm dreaming/ So, I hold my breath--to forget," she should have a great week again. The chorus has a lilting up-swing on every other note, we'd love to hear Crystal's pretty upper register on that.

Aaron Kelly, "You're Still the One"

We don't even know for this little moppet, but since he seems to like tackling those big songs that he doesn't connect with and can stand there with his weird foot-stomping-swaying thing, this seems like what Aaron will pick.

What do you guys think of our picks?

......Next week, Idol's song list will be the oeuvre of Shania Twain, who will pull double duty as Idol's mentor for the week. Twain should enjoy her moments with Bowersox — by chance, Twain happened to be the guest judge the day Bowersox auditioned in Chicago — and the Come On Over recording artist and Windsor, Ont., native could have some savvy advice for Siobhan Magnus, the seriously talented Cape Cod, Mass., 20-year-old who has lost her way in recent weeks.

Twain may have her work cut out for her with some of the others — 17-year-old Aaron Kelly landed in the bottom three for the third week running — but, more and more, this season is looking like a two-way contest between Bowersox and David Cook-sound-alike Lee DeWyze, with Magnus, Michael Lynche and, possibly, Casey James on the outside looking in.At last. Vote For the Worst's tyranny is broken. Tim Urban — "so off-key, so cheesy, so naive," in the inimitable words of the Worsters at VoteForTheWost.com — has ended his run on American Idol.

'American Idol' Top 6 to Sing the Songs of Shania Twain, Here's What You Might be Hearing
'American Idol' Top 6 to Sing the Songs of Shania Twain, Here's What You Might be Hearing

Abbey Simmons
Senior Writer, BuddyTV
Somewhere, "High School Student" Aaron Kelly is doing a happy dance. That's because the Top 6 have been tasked with singing the songs of Shania Twain, a theme that should be near and dear to the country crooners heart.

Shania, who has already made an appearance as a guest judge this season, will return as a mentor and the source of songs for the Top 6. As a mentor, we hope that Shania brings the same level-headed expertise and wry sense of humor that made her our favorite guest judge of the audition.

Though she's only been releasing albums since the early '90s, Shania's success has been unparalleled. Her album Come on Over is the best selling album of all-time by a female musician and is the best selling album in the history of country music. She hearlded the era of the country cross-over artist, paving the way for the likes of Faith Hill and American Idol's own Carrie Underwood.

While Shania's catalog is rich with choices, it could prove a difficult week for the remaining four guys. Many of Shania's best known songs are female-centered and we just can't imagine Casey James, Big Mike or Lee Dewyze being excited to sing songs like "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" or "The Woman In Me (Needs the Man in You)." Luckily, there are plenty of Shania songs that don't have "woman" in the title.

Courtesy of MJsBigBlog, here is the list of approved Shania Twain songs for the Top 6 to perform:

All Fired up, No Place to Go
    Amneris' Letter
    Any Man of Mine
    Black Eyes, Blue Tears
    Come On Over
    Crime of the Century
Dance with the One Who Brought You
    Don't!
Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)
    (Don't Gimme That) Once Over
    Forever and for Always
    From This Moment On
    God Bless the Child
Home Ain't Where His Heart Is (Anymore)
    Honey I'm Home
    I Ain't No Quitter
    If It Don't Take Two
(If You're Not In It For Love) I'm Outta Here!
    I'm Gonna Getcha Good!
I'm Holdin' On to Love (To Save My Life)
    I'm Jealous
It Only Hurts When I'm Breathing
    It's Alright (Club Mix)
    Ka-Ching!
    Lost My Heart
    Love Gets Me Every Time
Man! I Feel Like a Woman
    Nah!
    No One Needs to Know
    Party for Two
    Rock this Country!
She's Not Just a Pretty Face
    Shoes
Thank you Baby! (For Makin' Someday Come So Soon
    That Don't Impress Me Much
    There Goes the Neighborhood
    Up!
    What Made You Say That
    When You Kiss Me (Green)
Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?
You Lay a Whole Lot of Love on Me
    You Win My Love
    You're Still the One
    You've Got a Way
    Waiter! Bring Me Water!
    Whatever You Do! Don't!
    When
    When You Kiss Me
    Wild & Wicked
The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)

What do you think of next week's theme and mentor? And be sure to join the discussion on what Shania songs the Top 6 should sing.

Why Shania Twain makes a great 'American Idol' theme

I can't tell you how thrilled I am that Shania Twain will return to American Idol as a mentor this season. I've long thought she was one of the smartest, savviest entertainers around -- traits she showed during her stint as a guest judge earlier this season.

Even better, Twain's songs are uniquely suited the Idol format.

For one thing, they're very adaptable. Collaborating with then-husband Mutt Lange as producer, Twain often made records that sounded as influenced by honky-tonk and Western swing as by Def Leppard and AC/DC. As a result, a song like (If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here could work as an electrified hard-rock stomp or as an acoustic country blues (are you listening, Casey James?).

Also, Twain loves the idea of re-arranging songs. "I'm not a purist when it comes to genre," Twain told me around the time Up! came out. "I'm a student of all the influences I grew up listening to. It's natural for me to hear my song in many different ways."

Twain's last studio album -- 2002's Up! -- came in three versions: a country disc, a pop disc and an international disc that featured Bollywood elements. And in this clip from CMT's Up! Close and Personal, she performs AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long acoustically, with Allison Krauss + Union Station.

Also, the Idol contestants should benefit from the way Twain writes her material. She and Lange intentionally designed her songs to hook the listener's attention, then keep it by offering rhythmic and melodic sections that changed faster than the audience could get bored. Honey, I'm Home, for instance, starts out like a thumping Def Leppard rocker, then suddenly shifts gears into a line-dancing shuffle at the chorus. I'm Gonna Getcha Good! goes through three completely different sections in quick succession -- a low, purring verse followed a bridge with more sustained notes that builds tension released by its bouncy chorus.

Cutting those songs down for Idol time constraints should only accelerate the effect. It'll force the singers to switch gears pretty quickly, but, as long as they manage that, the performances will move along at a good clip, the singers will get to show several facets of their voices, and they ought to get more lighting changes than usual, too.

However, Twain's punctuation-heavy songs can trip you up if you're at all self-conscious. If you have any reservations whatsoever about singing lines like "I gol-darn gone and done it" (from Love Gets Me Every Time), "Rub my feet, gimme something to eat" (from Honey, I'm Home) or "Even my skin is acting weird/I wish that I can grow a beard" (from Up!), you run a great risk of looking like a fool when you try. Unfortunately, Idol just got rid of its one contestant this season who didn't seem to care if he looked goofy.

Here's the full list of Shania Twain songs iTunes has on its American Idol list, which includes not only the songs from Twain's three hit albums -- The Woman in Me, Come on Over and Up! -- but earlier material that she generally has shunned, as well as Amneris' Letter from Elton John's Broadway musical, Aida.

All Fired Up, No Place to Go

Some of these songs I've never heard of. Are they from her first album?

Shania Twain Slated for “American Idol”

Earlier this year, Shania Twain appeared as a guest judge on “American Idol,” leading to one of the season’s sillier moments as she praised contestant John Park for having a “beautiful bottom end.” She was talking about his vocal qualities, but (or should we say, butt) the comment opened the door to a string of double entendre.

Shania brings her observations back to “Idol” to mentor contestants on Tuesday’s show, which will have the six remaining performers all covering her songs, according to HitFix.com. That could mean some great renditions — or some real duds — of such titles as “Any Man Of Mine,” “You’re Still The One,” “Come On Over” or “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”

In fact, one site — MJ’s Blog — purports to have a list of 50 songs that the contestants are allowed to pick from in choosing their make-or-break performances.

On Wednesday’s show, Rascal Flatts will perform “Unstoppable” and Lady Antebellum will be featured on a live version of “Need You Now,” which they already taped in Los Angeles on April 14.

American Idol 2010: It’s Shania Twain Week

Shania Twain was my favorite guest judge during the audition process and I’m not surprised they brought her in to mentor the Top 6 and sing her catalogue for this week of American Idol season 9.

shania twain

Choosing songs from her list is going to be hard.  I can see Casey James doing “Rock This Country” but I think he needs to slow things down this week and really show off his vocal range so maybe “You’ve Got a Way” or “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing”.

Big Mike Lynche would do well with “From This Moment” and put an R&B spin on it.  That would be cool.

Aaron Kelly could choose “There Goes The Neighborhood” and do it justice.

I like Ka – Ching! for Lee Dewyze.  It’s got a nice beat and he could come out and rock it with a smile and a little movement around the stage and that would be a nice change and something we haven’t seen him do yet.  He needs to own that stage!

OK the women are actually hard to choose for.  Siobhan needs to show us all this week what kind of an artist she wants to be so whatever she chooses, she needs to put her own spin on the song.   Maybe “You’re Still The One”?  Shania has a much lower voice than Siobhan so she needs to keep that in mind when choosing a song.  Crystal could change it up this week and surprise us all with “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” or if she wanted to keep it slow than “Forever and For Always”.

What do you think these contestants should choose from the Shania Twain catalogue?

American Idol: Shania Twain WeekE-mail
American Idol: Shania Twain Week
Written by TNLADY
Saturday, 24 April 2010

The mentor this week is the lovely and talented Shania Twain.   Each contestant will choose one of Shania’s songs to perform.  This should be a great week of competition as all the contestants’ voices are well suited to the wide range of song choices they will have.

Probably the key here will be song choice…if they choose the wrong song it could be the end of their dreams, whereas the right song choice could make for a very unexpected results show on Wednesday evening.  I am a big fan of Shania Twain and feel she will do a great job with mentoring the contestants.  Hopefully they will take her advice to heart and we will see some of the best performances this season.

We saw a very lengthy episode of American Idol this past Wednesday night, as they celebrated “Idol Gives Back” as well as the live results show.  To many fans dismay, Tim Urban, aka ‘Teflon Tim’ was eliminated.  I admit, I was a little sad to see him go, not because of his singing ability, but because he has that contagious smile.  Regardless of how cruel the judges comments were for his performances, he always smiled, thanked them, and continued to turn young ladies heads with his great looks and nice smile. He may not have been the best performer in the competition, but in my opinion, he has the right attitude and was very entertaining to watch each week.

The bottom 3 were a bit surprising, as for the first time this season Casey James was in the bottom.  Casey has gotten mostly positive comments and reviews from the judges until his performance on Tuesday night.  I have to agree with the judges, his ‘same old routine’ is beginning to get boring.  Admittedly, he has a strong voice, nice looks, and a great body, but he needs to do more than stand on stage and play the guitar.  My advice to Casey is that he should work the stage, make himself available to the audience and take look at why Tim Urban lasted as long as he did…because he connected with the audience and made them feel they were a part of his performance.

Next we have Aaron Kelly, also in the bottom three this past week.  This wasn’t his first time in this position.  Aaron seems to be nice young man, has a good personality, good vocals, and probably a musical career in his future.  For a 16 year old, he has handled the competition quite well.  We have watched him take the judges comments to heart, try to improve on his performances, all the while being true to himself.  Does he have a chance to win American Idol?  Doubtful, but he will be someone we will hear more about in the coming years.  Depending on America’s votes, he could make it to the Top 3.

Michael Lynche, aka Big Mike, has been in the bottom 3 and had the judges ‘save’ used on him this season.  While I like him and enjoy some of his performances others leave me feeling that I don’t totally understand why the judges kept him.  He has a nice voice, the teddy bear quality about him, a great human interest story with becoming a new daddy while being a part of Idol, but I just don’t see him making it to the Top 3.

Someone who didn’t really impress me much at the beginning of the season is Lee DeWyze.  I still am not a big fan but will admit he has shown growth in talent since the audition stage.  While he looks great, has nice vocals, he is lacking in showing any personality.  I want to see him interact with the audience and let us see more than just the fact that he can sing.  This could be the key to him making it to the final 3.

Next is Siobhan Magnus, the ‘quirky’ girl as Simon refers to her.  There is just something so unique about her that I find refreshing.  She doesn’t have any particular ‘style’ in her appearance, her voice is amazing, and regardless of the judges remarks, she continues to be herself week after week.  Siobhan has shown an emotional side, a humorous side, and never ceases to amaze me with her comfort level when performing.  Top 3?  I think she’ll make it!

Last, we have Crystal Bowersox, understandably a fan favorite from the beginning.  Her voice is awesome but her connection with the audience isn’t quite where she needs to be if she hopes to be crowned the next American Idol.  Granted, she showed some emotion this past Tuesday when she let the tears flow while singing. Crystal needs to interact more with the audience, smile more, and show everyone that she is indeed enjoying herself. Being a mom away from her child has to be difficult for her, but I was glad to see her let down her guard and show us that she is not always the ‘tough girl’ she portrays.  Based on the judges remarks, Crystal is the one to beat this year.  My concern is with the stress this competition has had on her already, is she capable of dealing with the tremendous pressure that will happen if she wins the title?  I predict, if she can keep her emotions in check, she’ll make it to the top 2, and quite possibly be the winner.

Is Casey James the next to be eliminated on American Idol?  Could it be Big Mike?  With just 2 ladies left in the top 6, will it be one of them?  I’m looking forward to Tuesday nights performances and Wednesdays results show.  I predict a shocking results show, both with those in the bottom 3 as well as who will be walking away from their dreams.

Shania Twain goes from idol, to idle, to Idol
April 24, 2010

Shania Twain, who will be mentoring American Idol contestants this week as she helps prepare each of them to perform one of her own songs on the show, will be returning to the national spotlight on Idol after having spent much of the decade out of the spotlight. After releasing her fourth studio album “Up!” in 2002, the country pop singer has released another once since, save for 2004’s “Greatest Hits” collection. In fact her biggest instances in the limelight over the past eight years have been her carrying of the Olympic torch through Canada earlier this year and her guest judge appearance on Idol last year.

While there’s still no definitive word on the status of her next album, the singer, whose biggest hits include “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” is scheduled to star in her own television show on Oprah Winfrey’s new TV network next year. It seems like Twain, who has sold more than fifty million albums and has a stash of Grammy trophies, could return to the music spotlight anytime she chooses – but for now her fans will have to settle for her Idol appearance, which apparently will not include a performance of her own, as opposed to the two most recent mentors, Alicia Keys and Adam Lambert (click for interview), who each also performed one of their newest songs on the show.

American Idol Shania Twain: Top Six perform

April 25, 2010 12:49 AM EDT
This week on American Idol, the contestants will be singing the songs of Shania Twain, who is also serving as the mentor. She was a judge earlier in the season and did such a great job, they wanted her back!

First of all, how nerve racking to sing someones song to the person who sings it originally!

FOX has also announced performances by Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts for the results show on Wednesday, April 28th.

The top six including : Aaron Kelly, Casey James, Crystal Bowersox (winner), Lee Dewyze, Michael Lynche, and Siobhan Magnus will perform Tuesday, April 27th.

This week could be really interesting, with Shania Twain's country songs. I know some are going to be great spins on it, to make it sound like their own, I just can't wait to hear! Maybe it will make me like some Shania songs!

I am cheering you on Crystal!

Shania Twain will give sage advice to Idol contestants
By Alex Strachan, Canwest News Service April 26, 2010

Television

American Idol

When and where: Tuesday night at 8 on FOX, CTV

- - -

Her birth certificate reads Eilleen Regina Edwards, but you know her as Shania Twain.

Twain is not just a terrific stage name for a country-pop singer; it has become the signature handle of a music artist who, one could argue, has crafted a whole new sound and single-handedly created an entirely different genre: pop meets country.

On Tuesday, Twain will mentor the remaining contestants on an American Idol season that suddenly looks more compelling, thanks to the emergence of raspy-voiced David Cook-sound-alike Lee DeWyze as a genuine contender, and those incredible grace notes hit last week by Crystal Bowersox during her emotional rendition of the Curtis Mayfield gospel anthem "People Get Ready."

Ironically, Twain was the guest judge in Chicago when Bowersox -- considerably glammed-down then from now -- first auditioned. Bowersox first started writing songs as a 10-year-old in small-town Ohio, a shy kid with Type 1 diabetes who was relentlessly picked on in school for being poor and for wearing unstylish hand-me-downs. Her dad didn't have money, but he doted on his daughter's singing talent and did his best to shield her from life's hard knocks.

It's a story that will strike a deep chord in Twain, whose own childhood was hardly idyllic.

Early favourites don't always win on American Idol -- last season's Adam Lambert being the most recent example -- but the white-hot spotlight of attention is now on Bowersox in a way that seemed unimaginable just a few weeks ago. And not just because Bowersox is the strongest singer in a relatively weak field.

Twain will have canny advice for Siobhan Magnus, the 20-year-old from Cape Cod, Mass., who has mad ability, but has lost her confidence in recent weeks. And Twain will probably have sage counsel for country-style rockers DeWyze and Casey Jones. It's Bowersox, though, who will likely bring out Twain's true inner being. For a season that was supposed to be dull, colourless and not particularly inspiring, American Idol got interesting all of a sudden. Come on over, and enjoy the show.

Yee-haw! It’s Shania Twain Week on American Idol. Yet while the dormant country superstar proved to be a fabulous guest judges during the season 9 Chicago audition episode, I can’t help but feel that the show’s remaining six contestants will be navigating a minefield choosing from the pre-approved list of 50 Shania tracks currently streaming at iTunes (and listed after the jump). Past history has already shown us the perils of tackling some of Twain’s campier, uptempo tunes on the Idol stage: In season 5, early front-runner Mandisa got the boot after tanking on “Any Man of Mine,” while season 4 victor Carrie Underwood didn’t exactly have an Idol moment on “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Which is why I pity the fool who chooses “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and finds him- or herself attempting to pull off the “Okay, so you’re Brad Pitt” spoken-word interlude. (Insert silent shudder here.) If Ken Warwick has any kind of soul, he’ll limit the use of that track (and perhaps “Nah!”) to the results-show group “performance.”

Either way, though, the show must go on. Here’s my dream set-list for Tuesday night. When you’re done reading, suggest your own in the comments below. And to get all my Idol news and commentary, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak!

'Idol' stars 'excited to meet Shania Twain'

Monday, April 26 2010

By Lara Martin, US Correspondent

The American Idol finalists have revealed their excitement at meeting this week's guest mentor Shania Twain.

The country superstar will guide the Top 6 through her songbook on tomorrow night's episode of the Fox competition.

Writing on the show's official Facebook page, Michael Lynche said: "Awesome day ahead of us! On our way to meet Shania Twain! I'll bet she'll be even more beautiful in person! And that voice! Can't wait to see how the day plays out."

Casey James said: "Meeting Shania Twain today! Can't wait to see what she has to say. It's gonna be a little different since we are singing her songs!"

Both Siobhan Magnus and Lee DeWyze wrote that they were "psyched" to have Twain as a mentor, while Aaron Kelly added that he couldn't wait to meet her.

American Idol continues tomorrow night at 8/7c on Fox.

'American Idol': Shania Twain Song Suggestions for the Top 6

Monday, April 26, 2010

Abbey Simmons
Senior Writer, BuddyTV

More Hope you've got your boots shined and 10 gallon hat ready for tomorrow night because this week the American Idol Top 6 will be taking on the Shania Twain song book. Yeehaw? While at least one member of the Top 6 feels right in the saddle with this week's theme, it's an easy bet that anyone who isn't named Aaron Kelly does not.

See Where the Top 6 Stand in This Week's Power Rankings

What surprised me most about preparing this week's song suggestions is how many of Shania's songs I know by heart. (Seriously, you can quiz me on the lyrics to "Whose Beds Have Your Boots Been Under?" any day.) If you listened to the radio in the 1990's, whether it was tuned to a pop station or a country station, Shania's songs are ubiquitous. That's both a blessing and a curse to the Top 6 - they're versatile songs that can be melded to multiple genres, but they're also incredibly well known. That's why the contestants need to either stick to Shania's lesser known songs or make them their own this week, or I predict an awful lot of karaoke comments from the judges.

Will my suggestions have you saying "That Don't Impress Me Much?" Let's see.

Be sure to click on the song titles to watch the video and hear the songs for yourself.

Aaron Kelly - "Up!"

Ever the balladeer, I think Aaron Kelly should avoid that urge this week and go for one of Shania Twain's more upbeat country-fried songs. Something like "Up!" With pedal steel, banjo, and auto-tune twang there's no denying this is a country song and that's exactly what Aaron Kelly needs to bring to the stage this week. That and personality. Much like Katie Stevens, Aaron Kelly seems to have a touch of the reverse Benjamin Button going on - despite his youth; he seems to be rapidly aging with each performance.

Even though this is his week to shine, Aaron Kelly has the toughest road ahead of him. Aaron has to noticeably out perform the rest of the Top 6 since this is his week.

Casey James - "You've Got A Way"

There are a lot of safe, bluesy rock songs and guitar solos to tempt Casey this week, but considering how poorly that went for him last week, we think he should take two steps away from the obvious rockers. Casey's most successful performance all season has been a searing acoustic rendition of "Jealous Guy" and he should try and channel that with a bluegrass rewrite of "You've Got A Way." Word on the web is that Casey is an accomplished banjo player and some restrained plucking and passion could get Casey back on track this week.

Crystal Bowersox - "God Bless This Child"

As much as I'd enjoy it, I just can't imagine Crystal singing "Whose Bed have your Boots Been Under?" or even one of Shania's epic love songs. Crystal is a soulful singer and she seems to gravitate to songs with messages and meaning, that's why I think she'll go for Shania's gospel inspired anthem "God Bless the Child." (And no, not the classic rendition of the song that John Park put us to sleep with earlier this season.) I'd be shocked if Crystal sang anything else from Shania's catalog, that's how perfectly suited this song, is for Mamasox.

Lee Dewyze - "Don't!"

Lee's sang all kinds of love songs this season and yet, I feel like we haven't seen his vulnerable side yet. (I've previously described his song choices as "songs used to seduce your long-distance college girlfriend.") Though Shania has a couple of iconic love songs that would fit the bill, Lee should Shania's lesser known love song "Don't!" Its simple structure is ripe for a Lee acoustic arrangement, the growl will work nicely with the song, which stays in Shania's lower range and the ladies who love Lee will only fall deeper for the boy next door with this one.

Michael Lynche - "No One Needs to Know"

Much like Siobhan and Aaron, Big Mike hasn't met a ballad he didn't love. And just like Siobhan and Aaron, I'm going to suggest that Big Mike avoids any Shania song that's been performed as a first dance at a wedding. As much as I would love to see Big Mike go all out theatrical, don drag and sing "Man! I Feel like a Woman," which would at least spice up this rather dull season, there's no way that's happening outside of my active imagination.

So without that option, I suggest Big Mike sings "No One Needs to Know." Big Mike can strap on the acoustic guitar, change up the pronouns and give his best fancy free performance. Despite being an up-tempo ditty, "No One Needs to Know" still offers plenty of opportunity for Big Mike to show off his vocal range.

Siobhan Magnus - "That Don't Impress Me Much"

Despite having the vocal range to pull off Shania's biggest songs: her iconic love songs, Siobhan needs to resist that temptation as if her life depends on it. Because it does. After three weeks of songs that somehow were both too dramatic and too sleepy, it's time for Siobhan to have fun on stage again. Luckily, Shania has plenty of upbeat songs that verge on silly that perfectly meet Siobhan's needs. While Siobhan has lots of options ("Wild & Wicked" and "Man! I Feel like a Woman") Siobhan's best bet is "That Don't Impress Me Much."

Not only does the song fit the tempo and feel that Siobhan should go for this week, the message is quite on point with the quirky girl that seems unconcerned by the hugeness of the show she's on and mainstream conventions.

And there you have it, your Shania song suggestions. What did you think? And be sure to join the discussion: "who will soar and who will stumble during Shania week?"

michael-lynche-siobhan-magnus-lee-dewyze.jpgThree "American Idol" Season 9 finalists, Michael, Lynche, Siobhan Magnus and Lee Dewyze, took some time out of their busy Shania Twain schedule to get some new tattoos! We wonder what they are of?

Lee posted to his Facebook page: Hey everyone! Meeting Shania again! I'm psyched I got a new tattoo last night, I love it! The mountains are unreal out here. I'll definately update when this is over, love you guys and I'll talk to you later!

And Siobhan followed up with: I'm awfully joyous today. Got some fresh ink last night with lee and mike! Also psyched to meet Shania today! And still feeling stunned about seeing courtney love in the flesh he other night... Life is goodsmile.gif

Considering that Siobhan told Zap2it that her outfit last week (remember, with the butterflies and leaves and ribbon-strapped shoes) was an "ode to 'Fern Gully,'" we hope to see some kind of butterfly. Lee also told us that the tattoo he has on his arm are some lyrics by Cat Stevens and John Lennon, so maybe he went with another music-themed tattoo? We can hardly wait until Tuesday night (April 27) to ask the Idols to show us their new ink.

UPDATE: This post from I Need My Fix appears to show Lee's new tattoo, the flag on his right arm. We are told that is the municipal flag of Chicago.

Lee DeWyze, Siobhan Magnus New Tattoos, S9 Idols at the Shrek Screening in Los Angeles

Lee DeWyze - New Tattoo - Shrek Hollywood Premier

After mentor, Shania Twain worked with the Season 9 Top 6 on Saturday (The Shania songbook is this week’s theme), the Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze, Siobhan Magnus, Casey James, Mike Lynche and Aaron Kelly attended a screening of Shrek Forever After with Ryan Seacrest (he has a cameo) at the Grove in Los Angeles.

The night before, Siobhan Magnus tweeted about getting some “fresh ink” with Lee DeWyze and Mike Lynche.  Check out Lee’s new tat in the photo above (the dark tat with stars)

Lee also mentioned his new tattoo in a tweet, and that he was  excited to meet Shania again–she was the guest judge in Chicago, where Lee lives and auditioned.

'American Idol' Contestants To Tap Shania Twain's Limited 'Songbook'

Shania Twain & The American Idol Top 6
Shania Twain mentors the top 6 finalists and each will perform from her songbook on American Idol airing Tuesday; April 27 at 8 p.m. on FOX. (Ray Mickshaw / FOX)

It's one of the ironies of the "American Idol" season for Connecticut's Katie Stevens that she didn't stay around long enough to show what she could do in country, a field that judge Simon Cowell always thought she should pursue.

Her ouster two weeks ago came before the show got around to country week. Last year, country week was in mid-March, when there was still a Top 11. Maybe they waited because there are so few hits to choose from this time. But rather than letting contestants choose any country hit, as has been the custom in country weeks past, this year is restricted to what they are with straight faces calling "The Songbook of Shania Twain."

The Canadian singer came out of exile to be a perfectly fine celebrity judge during auditions, and now the show is returning the favor by having only her songs on the roster. The Beatles had 12 studio albums; Elvis Presley released about 14; the Rolling Stones have released 22, all three providing plenty of material when their songbooks were the themes this year on "Idol." Twain has had four, and though she's sold a lot of albums, the number of singles that have crossed over to pop Top 10 can be counted on one hand.

So there will be a lot of clamoring to pick "You're Still the One," "From This Moment On" and "That Don't Impress Me Too Much." Most of the rest of the Twain songs of the 50 made available to the singers will be less familiar. We can assume it will be up to Crystal Bowersox or Siobhan Magnus to sing "Man, I Feel Like a Woman" (though a version by Big Mike might shake things up). These days, Bowersox is the undisputed front-runner, having been the sole standout on inspiration week and the only recipient of uniformly positive comments, including Simon Cowell's observation that she's in a different league.

Twain will be on hand to mentor, but isn't scheduled to perform on the results show Wednesday. Rascal Flatts will perform its current single "Unstoppable" and Lady Antebellum will perform "I Need To Know." And for something completely different, Shakira will sing "Gypsy."

"American Idol" runs tonight at 8 on Fox; the results show is Wednesday at 9 p.m. For the first time this season, each show is one hour.

Shania helps would-be Idols

Her birth certificate reads Eilleen Regina Edwards, but you know her as Shania Twain. Twain is not just a terrific stage name for a country-pop singer, it has become the signature handle of a music artist who, one could argue, has crafted a whole new sound and single-handedly created an entirely different genre: pop meets country.

Tonight, Twain will mentor the remaining contestants on an American Idol (CTV, Fox, 8 p.m.) season that suddenly looks more compelling, thanks to the emergence of raspy-voiced David Cook-soundalike Lee DeWyze as a contender and those incredible grace notes hit last week by Crystal Bowersox during her emotional rendition of the Curtis Mayfield anthem People Get Ready.

Ironically, Twain was the guest judge in Chicago when Bowersox - considerably glammed-down then from now - auditioned. Bowersox started writing songs as a 10-year-old in small-town Ohio, a shy kid with Type 1 diabetes who was relentlessly picked on for being poor and for wearing unstylish hand-me-downs. Her dad didn't have money, but he doted on his daughter's talent and did his best to shield her from life's hard knocks.

It's a story that will strike a deep chord in Twain, whose own childhood was hardly idyllic. Twain will have canny advice for Siobhan Magnus, the 20-year-old from Cape Cod, Mass., who has mad ability but has lost her confidence. And Twain will probably have sage counsel for country-style rockers DeWyze and Casey Jones. It's Bowersox, though, who is likely to bring out Twain's true inner being. For a season that was supposed to be colourless, American Idol got interesting all of a sudden. Come on over and enjoy the show.

- Glee's (Global, Fox, 9 p.m.) Cruella de Vil, cheerleader coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), decides her Cheerios! squad has been hitting the high-calorie cereal a little too enthusiastically lately, so she orders the kids onto an insane diet in preparation for a photo spread in Splits magazine. You thinking dieting is hard? She has hepatitis! That's hard.

- PBS Frontline (PBS, 10 p.m.) asks if the cure is worse than the disease in the timely program The Vaccine War. Partly the result of continuing fallout from last summer's swine-flu scare and partly the result of questions people are asking themselves more often these days, The Vaccine War draws a line between public health officials and vaccine advocates on the one hand, and a growing chorus of doubters on the other. The Vaccine War may make you think twice about getting that "triple shot" next time.

- Promises, promises. Remember that promise that Lost (ABC, 9 p.m.) would air new episodes uninterrupted until its May 23 finale? Ha! Tonight's episode is a repeat, Ab Aeterno, a.k.a. "the Richard Alpert episode," which aired late last month. Good episode, sure, but good enough to revisit so soon? You decide.
