Shania signs with Jason Owen's Sandbox Entertainment management (*Terminated*)

Jason Owen Leaves UMG To Form New Company

August 25, 2010 at 7:53 AM (PT)

JASON OWEN has stepped down from his post as SVP/Artist Development and Marketing for UNIVERSAL MUSIC NASHVILLE, to launch his own company, SANDBOX ENTERTAINMENT. The new company will be a full-service management and entertainment company, opening its doors on SEPTEMBER 7th with SHANIA TWAIN signed on as the first client.

OWEN will remain connected to UMG in a consultancy role, working with Chairman/CEO LUKE LEWIS. Prior to joining UNIVERSAL, OWEN, served as Director of Marketing and Talent Relations at COLUMBIA TriSTAR TELEVISION. His background also includes stints with SPELLING ENTERTAINMENT and NEW LINE CINEMA/FINE LINE FEATURES.

“SHANIA and I have been together for over 8 years in my role at UMG and to start this new journey with her is a true privilege for me,”said OWEN. “SHANIA is a true music icon who has broadened Country music's boundaries and brought many new fans to the genre. We have some exciting plans in the works that will expand her worldwide career into new areas of music and entertainment, which will all be revealed very soon. I am honored to work with someone of such talent and creativity who has had a lasting influence on all genres of music.”

“During my time at UNIVERSAL, I’ve also worked with many of the world’s most talented artists and many of the most dynamic people in the business, most notably, my mentor and friend, LUKE LEWIS. I am fortunate to be able to continue my relationship with him and UMG, while branching out with this exciting new venture.”

“JASON has done a tremendous job in helping us to guide the careers of many of our artists,” said LEWIS. “While we are sorry to see him move on, we certainly understand it. We wish him only the very best and are delighted that we will continue to work with him in his consultancy role.

Longtime record label executive Jason Owen is launching a management firm with Shania Twain as his first client. Today he is announcing the launch of Sandbox Entertainment, a full-service management and entertainment company which will be based in Nashville and open its doors on Sept. 7.

Owen’s last day as Senior Vice President of Artist Development and Marketing for Universal Music Nashville will be Sept. 3. However, he will continue his nearly decade-long association with the label in a consultancy role, working with Chairman & CEO Luke Lewis.

“Shania and I have been together for over 8 years in my role at UMG and to start this new journey with her is a true privilege for me,” said Owen. “Shania is a true music icon who has broadened country music’s boundaries and brought many new fans to the genre. We have some exciting plans in the works that will expand her worldwide career into new areas of music and entertainment, which will all be revealed very soon.”

While at Universal Music Nashville, Owen developed and implemented successful publicity, marketing and creative initiatives for such chart-topping artists as Sugarland, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Billy Currington, and Laura Bell Bundy.

He launches Sandbox with extensive experience in building and managing campaigns across a wide range of platforms, and is credited for his work on high-level programs for Shania Twain and Sugarland, including producing the hit ABC-TV special, “Sugarland: Live On The Inside.”

Prior to joining Universal, Owen enjoyed an extensive and successful career in television, serving as Director of Marketing and Talent Relations at Columbia TriStar Television. His background also includes stints with Spelling Entertainment and New Line Cinema/Fine Line Features.

“During my time at Universal, I’ve also worked with many of the world’s most talented artists and many of the most dynamic people in the business, most notably, my mentor and friend, Luke Lewis,” added Owen. “I am fortunate to be able to continue my relationship with him and UMG, while branching out with this exciting new venture.”

“Jason has done a tremendous job in helping us to guide the careers of many of our artists,” commented Lewis. “While we are sorry to see him move on, we certainly understand it. We wish him only the very best and are delighted that we will continue to work with him in his consultancy role."

Shania will "expand her worldwide career into new areas of music and entertainment"

Which could be a Las Vegas show for all we know.

Also, American Idol itself fits into the "music and entertainment" category.

Owen isn't going to have Shania as his client if she does not plan to produce new music and expand her business ventures after a long absence. If she wanted to perform in Vegas she wouldn't need him. She could hire an A&R person (as well as a lawyer) or someone in a similar position to secure the deal and not work with that manager until her contract expires and she decides what to do next. I don't think she has her sights set that low just yet. Besides if my memory serves me right Shania once said Vegas is for old people. I doubt she sees herself as 'old' just yet. Ditto for AI. AI is just a way for Shania to reintroduce herself into the spotlight to the young crowd. I don't think that AI is going to be an actual job for her. She knows what she's doing. She's carefully planned the next course of her career post Mutt, even if that means having fans wait another 2+ years for new music.

Shania also said she'd be with Mutt forever and for always.

PEOPLE CHANGE.

A random quote that Shania made years ago means absolutely nothing today.  This has been proven over and over and over again.

But I was only half serious with the Vegas comment.

Shania Twain heating up again?

The musical career of Shania Twain apparently is heating up again.

Thursday, August 26, 2010

On Wednesday, one of the key players in the country music scene, Universal Music Nashville Senior Vice President for Media, Artist Relations & Creative Services Jason Owen said he was leaving to form management company Sandbox Entertainment. His first client is Twain. She has not released an album since "Up!" in 2002. Since then, Twain, who turns 45 Saturday, has gotten divorced from her husband/producer Robert "Mutt" Lange. Rumor has it that she has been working on a new album.

Twain announced plans for her own TV show, entitled "Why Not? With Shania Twain." The show is scheduled to debut in early 2011 on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

Based in Nashville, Sandbox will open its doors Sept. 7. Owen will serve as a consultant to Universal. "Shania and I have been together for over eight years in my role at UMG and to start this new journey with her is a true privilege for me," Owen said. "We have some exciting plans in the works that will expand her worldwide career into new areas of music and entertainment, which will all be revealed very soon."

"Jason has done a tremendous job in helping us to guide the careers of many of our artists," said UniversalChairman/CEO Luke Lewis. "While we are sorry to see him move on, we certainly understand it. We wish him only the very best and are delighted that we will continue to work with him in his consultancy role."

Owen joined the label after starting in television. He has held his current role since 2005.

YEAH AND?!

A random quote that Shania made years ago means absolutely nothing today.  This has been proven over and over and over again.

Even if Shania would have never talked about Vegas it is a tourist wasteland.  I think Shania would get bored with Vegas quick after having lived in more cosmopolitan places around the world.  I've visited there and the only performers there are washed up or local acts not known outside of the Strip with the exception of Garth Brooks (who retired to be with his family) and Celine Dion (a mom who wants a stationary job).

“Exciting Plans In The Works” For Shania Twain

According to Country Aircheck, Shania Twain recently signed with a new management company, Sandbox Entertainment. The company will be lead by Jason Owen, who formerly worked with Twain at her record label, Universal Music Group.

“Shania and I have been together for over eight years in my role at UMG and to start this new journey with her is a true privilege for me,” Owen says. “We have some exciting plans in the works that will expand her worldwide career into new areas of music and entertainment, which will all be revealed very soon.”

It sounds like they have some big plans on the horizon…Could there be a comeback? Twain is rumored to be the next American Idol judge. Do you think that’s what the “exciting plans” could be?

Maybe we'll hear something soon and get more details about Shania's new show "Why Not?". Or maybe we'll hear Shania is attending the CMAs in November.  But as far as any news music-wise, I doubt it.

Wow. Now what?

SANDBOX, TWAIN PART WAYS

Hits Daily Double | February 19, 2016

Jason Owen’s Sandbox Entertainment has parted ways with management client Shania Twain. The split occurred late last year, when Owen elected not to renew their management agreement.

Owen had been working with Twain since the launch of her last studio album, UP!, in 2002, on which he oversaw her PR and marketing. In 2010, Twain joined Sandbox's roster as a management client. During their tenure together, Twain became a New York Times Bestseller and completed a successful two-year Las Vegas residency—and she recently wrapped up one of the most successful tours of 2015.

Sandbox’s roster includes recent Grammy winners Little Big Town, as well as Faith HillKacey Musgraves, Dan+Shay, Seth Ennis and the Johnny Cash and Hank Williams trusts.

I thought that the reason might be that she isn't going to do any projects until she releases the album, so during this time she won't need a manager. Once she's ready to release it, they may renew the contract or she finds herself a new manager.

She mentioned something about not being able to do two things at a time. That means to postpone her album again if she goes on tour to Europe. And to tour here she needs to do some PR compaign because I don't feel like many people remember her. I wonder if she'll be able to gather stadiums.

Hi,

I know what I would do if it were me.  Since I'm close to having a new album done I would use the new album and tour Europe with the new stuff and end up back in Canada and the U.S. with the new album and tour.  That way I could say that I did the tour of Europe only thing is unless she mixed the Rock this Country tour with the new album tour Europe would miss out on the Rock this Country part but they would be first to hear and see the new album live...more than fair trade off in my opinion...but she could also decide to only tour Europe with the new album and tour.  Which would be awful for the US and Canada...but I do not think she would leave out her home country for new music and tour if she decided to debut the new stuff by doing it on a European tour.  But it's all just one big "if" with Shania as we know she is like a feather in the wind.  You can't pin her down to anything definite when it comes to her music and her plans personally or professionally.

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

Hi,

Does anybody remember watching the behind the scenes stuff in Vegas at one point Shania was in the Bahamas on the phone with someone and I think it may have been her management and she seemed to be upset or frustrated about something.  I remember that she didn't seem happy with whoever was on the other end...maybe that was her management.  Maybe they were pressuring her for new material and trying to get her to work a little harder and faster on the new album and she didn't want to... who knows  but I do think I remember a heated phone call at one point in the video.

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

It was indeed her manager but the talk was more about money as far as I remember. She wanted to put together the best show in Vegas but the price was growing. She mentioned that a couple of times. I think those talks were more about the money and I remember her saying "I'm the one with any risks here" or something like that. I understood it as if her show was bad, she would get bad reviews and it could have ruined her career because it was her comeback on stage.

I found this February 23 post by Cody on the Shania Boards:
"I spoke to the Sandbox receptionist today and she did confirm that they no longer represent Shania. She was very nice about it, and told me that she is being overseen by her agent at CAA."

***Creative Artists Agency (CAA) is an American talent and sports agency headquartered in Los Angeles, California. This could explain why Shania was in L.A. a couple weeks ago when she attended Adele's concert.

Without full time manager - no new music in the near future and no tour to Europe this year ...
