This song has now offically become a hit as far as I am concerned. What I can not understand is on the Billboard charts the song will not seem to move past 15 Yet on this chart it is already at number 9 ? Can someone tell me what the difference is in the two charts ?

The Billboard single charts use “audience impressions” to rank songs. A company called BDS (owned by the Nielsen company, which also owns Billboard) monitors airplay at stations (85 Adult Contemporary stations for "Endless Love") in the largest radio markets in the country. They figure out how many people heard the song each time it’s played – if you know how Nielsen ranks TV shows, by monitoring a sample of viewers they consider typical and then calculating how many watchers each show has, then you are familiar with the idea of “audience share.” BDS just has to multiply each spin a song gets by the audience share (in millions of people) that spin received, and add ‘em all up to arrive at a total of “audience impressions” for each song. The song with the highest total audience on the 85 stations on the Billboard AC panel is ranked #1. The song with the 30th biggest audience is ranked #30.

How does the Mediabase chart differ from Billboard?

First of all, the similarities outweigh the differences. About 85 AC stations are on both panels. There are about 15 unique Billboard stations and about 15 unique Mediabase stations. And they’re both trying to measure listeners.

Mediabase uses a points system to rank the songs, calculated by an undisclosed formula involving audience and spins. It is possible for Song A to be ahead of Song B in both spins and audience, and still to have Song B ranked ahead. Doesn’t happen all that often, but when songs are close, it can. Because of the difference in panel stations, and the difference in how songs are ranked, there are always going to be some differences between MB charts and Billboard charts. Sometimes the two charts feature different #1 songs, and that always gets some attention.

This song hasn't peaked yet. Doing pretty good for a song with minimal promotion.

Lionel Richie: There Were Endless Problems Singing "Endless Love" with Shania Twain

June 13, 2012

Back in 1981, when Lionel Richie recorded “Endless Love” with Diana Ross, it was difficult to get the two of them in the same city to cut the song. Turns out when Lionel recorded an updated version for Shania Twain for his current hit album Tuskegee, he had the same problem, but worse.

At first, Lionel said, he asked if Shania would come to Nashville to record the album. She said no, and, according to him, she wouldn’t come to Los Angeles or Miami, either. So he ended up having to meet her in the Bahamas, and even then, he says, she didn’t event want to do it in a recording studio. Why was Shania being so difficult? Because she literally had not tried to sing anything for seven years. But Lionel didn’t know that — until the moment came to cut the song and she refused to do it.

”I didn’t know that she has not done a vocal in seven years and has not been onstage in seven years,” Lionel recalls. “So she walks in and announces to me fifteen minutes before we’re now to go in, she can’t do it.” Lionel says he pulled her aside, away from the cameras, which were filming the entire session for her OWN reality show Why Not? with Shania Twain.

“I said to her, ‘Let me see you for a minute,’” Lionel recalls. “And I went in the room and I said to her, ‘We have something in common.’ And she said, ‘What is that?’ I said, ‘We are both scared to death.’ And she said, ‘But you’re Lionel Richie!’ And I said, ‘And you’re Shania Twain!’”

That seemed to work, because Shania overcame her fears and recorded the song after all, even though she was convinced she wouldn’t be able to sing because it had been so long. “I said, ‘We’re going to go ahead and prove this wrong,’” Lionel remembers. “So when you hear the first time she comes in on this record…that’s the first note she’s ever tried after seven years. And I ask you, does she have a problem? The answer is no.”

Shania will be showing off her voice in a big way later this year, when she debuts her Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. As for Lionel, he kicks off a European tour in September.

Shania Twain's fears kind of made her a pain in the butt for Lionel Richie

June 14, 2012

I hate to say it, but Shania Twain sounds like a major pain in the rump....at least she did when Lionel Richie was trying to get her to meet him to record their eventual beautiful duet of Endless Love for his "Tuskegee" CD.

Lionel tells ABC News that once Shania had agreed to record the duet, he spent a lot of time trying to pin her down to get the recording done. He says he suggested they meet in Nashville, she said no. He suggested Los Angeles and Miami also but she turned those down too. He finally flew out to the Bahamas but she refused to record in a recording studio.

Fortunately, there was a rational reason for Shania being difficult....she was scared. After being out of music for so long and having voice issues, she was scared she wouldn't be any good.

Lionel says he wasn't aware of Shania's reasons until he pulled her aside and asked her what was going on. From ABC News:

"I didn't know that she has not done a vocal in seven years and has not been onstage in seven years," Lionel recalls. "So she walks in and announces to me fifteen minutes before we're now to go in, she can't do it." Lionel says he pulled her aside, away from the cameras, which were filming the entire session for her OWN reality show Why Not? with Shania Twain.

"I said to her, 'Let me see you for a minute,'" Lionel recalls. "And I went in the room and I said to her, 'We have something in common.' And she said, 'What is that?' I said, 'We are both scared to death.' And she said, 'But you're Lionel Richie!' And I said, 'And you're Shania Twain!'"

Lionel's pep talk seemed to work because the pair eventually recorded the song (in the relaxed setting of a bedroom in the Bahamas) and Tuskegee has been a huge success. Lionel says that when you hear Shania singing on Endless Love, that was the very first note she had tried singing (or at least singing for a job) for seven years.

I guess fear is universal and doesn't care if you're famous or not. Makes me love Shania even more.

Shania appears to have overcome her fear of not being good enough in a big way because she's gearing up to star in her very own Vegas show starting December 1.

Good article from Business Week.

Lionel Richie Finds Some Country Comfort

By Andy Fixmer on August 29, 2012

One of singer Lionel Richie’s biggest hits was his 1981 duet with Diana Ross, Endless Love. Recently the artist has taken a cue from another vintage tune: Gloria Gaynor’s 1979 hit, I Will Survive. That disco-era anthem of reinvention says a lot about the career strategy of not just Richie but of the entire music industry, which for more than a decade has grappled with the toll digitization has taken on its once-platinum business model.

A quarter century after Richie’s last No. 1 album, the 63-year-old singer-songwriter of such R&B staples as All Night Long (All Night) and Three Times a Lady again tops Billboard’s sales charts with Tuskegee, a collection of duets with country music’s Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, and others. By reprising some of his biggest hits with country’s top stars, Richie is blurring the lines between genres and attracting a new audience that still spends on higher-margin CDs. He’s also providing a spark for the U.S. record industry, which registered its first annual sales growth in seven years in 2011 and is eager to get consumers to try—and buy—new music beyond their traditional faves. “These songs lend themselves to being done by country artists,” says Ken Robold, general manager of Universal Music Group Nashville, the Vivendi (VIV)-owned label that produced the album. “Lionel could have been a country artist all along. He just happened to sign to Motown.”

Tuskegee, named for Richie’s hometown in Alabama, has been a smash. Richie has sold in excess of 1.2 million albums, more than any other artist with a release this year, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album “is me coming home,” Richie says in an e-mail. Growing up, the singer listened to Grand Ole Opry broadcasts and early in his career was befriended by country icons Conway Twitty and Dottie West. He says he enjoyed Buck Owens and Glen Campbell without thought to genre and later puzzled R&B tastemakers with simple, country-influenced songs like Easy and Three Times a Lady that had broad appeal. “I guess that’s because I didn’t understand the categories and refused to fall into one,” he says.

As genres go, country music is lucrative because it sells more CDs as a share of revenue than rock, rap, or R&B, according to SoundScan. That means a bigger payday for labels and artists than they’d see from music sold as downloads on sites such as iTunes, where 30 percent of the price goes to Apple (AAPL). Country fans are also an important audience for concerts, which many artists depend on for revenue once provided by record sales. The industry’s top-grossing tour this year was McGraw’s and Chesney’s Brothers of the Sun Tour, which averaged a mammoth $4.12 million per performance, according to concert tracker Pollstar. Both country icons sing with Richie on Tuskegee. “There’s a business rationale, looking at music today, where you would want to be in country,” says Russ Crupnick, an analyst at researcher NPD Group. “It’s a great sweet spot.”

So far this year, 73 percent of country sales have come from physical CDs, vs. 59 percent for all genres, according to SoundScan. While total sales of CDs have plummeted 52 percent from five years ago, country has declined only 30 percent. So a well-placed retail promotion of a country album can still yield a disproportionate bump in sales. Richie’s label released a CD single of a new version of Endless Love, a duet with Twain, exclusively at Wal-Mart (WMT) five weeks before the album’s debut to coincide with Valentine’s Day, Universal Music’s Robold says. “That created a lot of awareness that this album was coming,” he says.

While artists such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett had already shown duets with modern stars can be a potent formula, Richie, who in his career has sold 23 million albums in the U.S., went further by adapting some of his biggest songs for a new genre. Crupnick says that also motivated longtime fans, who might have skipped another hits compilation, to buy the album. “Someone said to me, ‘Lionel’s going country,’” Richie says. “No … I’m just following where the songs have already gone.”

Tuskegee was well-timed. Country music sales are at their highest since 2009, according to SoundScan. On TV, Shelton has become a judge on NBC’s The Voice, and ABC has scheduled two new country-themed shows for this fall. Twain devoted an episode of her cable show on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network to her collaboration with Richie.

Music-streaming services such as Spotify, social media, and multigenre festivals such as Bonnaroo, where Richie played with Kenny Rogers in June, also help expose niche artists to wider audiences. Another example: this month’s iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, which will feature everyone from country’s Taylor Swift to rapper Lil Wayne to Latin crooner Enrique Iglesias to deejay Deadmau5.

Richie’s label has also pitched the CD on digital services to reach new audiences. Tracks and music videos from Tuskegee have been streamed almost 15 million times on services such as Spotify and VEVO. Explains Eric Garland, co-founder of music researcher BigChampagne and senior vice president at Live Nation Entertainment (LYV): “People who might not have otherwise heard what you’re doing because the barriers were so significant—you had to hear about the project, get in your car to buy a CD and to listen to it—now have more of a chance.”

The bottom line: Lionel Richie, who hasn’t had a No. 1 album in 25 years, is the best-selling artist of 2012 thanks to a new album of duets with hot country stars.

Lionel Richie on Surviving the Cut-Throat Music Business

By Andy Fixmer on August 30, 2012

Veteran singer-songwriter Lionel Richie, who has sold 23 million albums in the U.S. during a four-decade career, is again at the top of the charts with Tuskegee, an album of duets with such country stars of today as Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and Shania Twain. In an e-mail exchange, Bloomberg Businessweek asked him about his genre-crossing experience and today’s music business.

BW: Leading up to making Tuskegee, how much influence has country had on your song writing?

Richie: I grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama. So this album is me coming home. I discovered being a songwriter in Tuskegee. My titles Sail On and Easy, they’re all from growing up. It’s not a complicated life down there. It’s really quite basic. You’re happy, you’re sad, you’re glad, you party. That’s basic living.

When I was growing up, music was music and there were no genres. We didn’t look at it as country music. Popular music in Tuskegee was country music. So I didn’t know it in categories. It was the radio.

My earliest memories of country music are the Grand Ole Opry. We didn’t have 475 channels back then; we only had three. You either watched country, national news, or local. That’s it. We watched the Opry every weekend. Did we know about Buck Owens and Charley Pride? Yep, sure did. Then the next generation came along, which was Mac Davis and Glen Campbell, and of course Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson were the kings. There were so many great songwriters that influenced me.

Why a duets album? What was the rationale for the project?

I always like to challenge myself. I never want to be put into a box. One day we were sitting around talking about where to go next and talking especially about where the songs have been. We discovered that, believe it or not, the songs [I had written] stuck in country for some good reason, and it’s been there all the time. So we put a feel out to see if we did a country album, who would come to the table, and all of country came to the table! I discovered that every country star basically knew one or more of my songs.

Did you ever consider the business attractiveness of crossing genres, especially toward country?

Believe me, I love commerce as much as the rest of the readers of Businessweek. But in art, you have to be true to yourself and your musical vision. People have known me well for a long time, so if I was chasing a trend and doing something that wasn’t authentic to who I am, they would know it in just a few seconds. That said, I have always tried to stay ahead of the curve while always keeping in mind what music lovers want. Throughout my career, I’ve been told that I wasn’t making the music the audience wanted to hear. In other words, I would go to an R&B convention with a song called Easy Like Sunday Morning, and they’d say, “The brother’s got to be crazy.”

Then I would go back to the disk jockeys and say, “O.K., let me explain something to you. If Mozart were black, would he be Mozart? No. Because you wouldn’t have played him. So I’m not writing R&B music; I’m writing a gift that came through me that obviously makes sense because it’s working.” By the time I got to All Night Long, it was just, “That’s Lionel.” It was expected that I would go left or right and certainly not down the center. I guess that’s because I didn’t understand the categories and refused to fall in one.

How do you think about genre these days, and how does that compare with when you first broke into the music industry?

Years ago, you had many different program directors who worked various radio stations and they were specific in their fields or genre or types of music. You had the R&B programs, Country PD’s [programming directors at radio stations], etc. And you built relationships within those genres of music and those people. Today, everything has turned into a conglomerate and there are one or two PDs programming all the stations in specific territories. Playlists seem smaller these days, so fewer songs are given the chance to be heard and it’s become more difficult for older artists to be played on radio. That said, it still boils down to one-on-one relationships in the industry and the quality of the song. You still have to win over listeners one at a time.

What lessons can other artists—or even the broader music industry—learn from your success?

I always tell young artists, remember one day you will be 40, 50, and 60 years old. As you get older in this industry, put Mr. in front of your name. If it doesn’t flow, then you’re in trouble. You never want to just be a fad, because one day you will mature and get older and so will your original fan base. You hope that your name and your good music will grow older with them. Yes, you want to evolve, but you always evolve with maturity, class, and integrity.

The most important concept you have to understand is simplicity. You can write a hard song any day of the week: Just throw in a bunch of notes and say as many words as you can think of. But Stuck On You, Easy, Still,—I mean, simplicity. What year does that song sound like it might have been written? Pick a year. What wedding did it work for? Every wedding. What religion did it work for? Every religion. The reason people know these songs so well is because they are very basic, one-on-one feelings and emotions.

Would you like to record another album of country duets, or would you ever consider writing new material for a country album? Is there another genre that interests you?

Absolutely, doing this duets album with country artists brought me full circle. I am home at country, so I certainly could see me doing another country album, maybe this time with new country originals. But I am open to working with artists from all genres from around the world. Even when we go home, we often branch out in life to still adventure on what’s out there. I would love to do something with Coldplay, Train, and believe or not, people like Swedish House Mafia. The possibilities are endless.

Not Shania's version but...

"Endless Love" leads Billboard's top love songs

By Noreen O'Donnell | Reuters – Wed, Feb 13, 2013

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When it comes to love, sometimes old songs say it best.

The 1981 Motown ballad "Endless Love" by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie topped Billboard magazine's "Top 50 'Love' Songs of All Time" list on Wednesday, just in time for Valentine's Day.

The duet, written by Richie and used as the theme song for Franco Zeffirelli's film of the same name, earned Richie an Academy Award nomination for best original song.

The list is based on the rankings on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart from its start in 1958 until today. As might be expected, every song has the word "love" in the title.

Boyz II Men's 1994 hit "I'll Make Love to You," 2011 pop dance track "We Found Love" by Rihanna and Calvin Harris, 1977's "How Deep Is Your Love," from the Bee Gees and 1976's "Silly Love Songs" by Wings round out the top five.

The oldest song dates from 1958, "To Know Him Is to Love Him" by The Teddy Bears. Rihanna's "We Found Love" is the most recent entry on the list.

Whitney Houston's 1992 version of "I Will Always Love You," Mario's 2004 "Let Me Love You," 1990's "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" by Stevie B., 1977's "Best of My Love" from The Emotions and the Ray Charles 1962 classic "I Can't Stop Loving You," complete the top 10.

This is the fourth year that Billboard has issued a list for Valentine's Day, although in 2011 its "Love Stinks" compilation took the opposite approach with the 30 biggest heartbreak hits.

Two real-life couples appear this year, Captain & Tennille with 1975's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Jay-Z and Beyonce with 2003's "Crazy in Love."

Diana Ross, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey have three entries each on the list, along with Paul McCartney with The Beatles and his own band Wings, for "Silly Love Songs," 1973's "My Love" and "She Loves You" from 1963.

The complete list can be seen at http://www.billboard.com/lovesongs

Lionel Richie calls Canadian fans 'loyal to the core'

By Jane Stevenson | Toronto Sun | July 27, 2014

Lionel Richie promises Tuskegee 2 is coming.

“It was so natural, so organic and it didn’t seem like it was trying and it certainly was successful – why not try to do it again?” said Richie of his No. 1 album, 2012’s Tuskegee, a collection of country duet reimaginings of his hits.

“What would you think would be the No. 1 question (in all these interviews)? ‘Are you going to have a second album?’ So by the time I finish these 40 interviews the answer is, ‘I think there might be a Tuskegee 2.’ Only because it’s like saying, ‘Well, we’ll do Spiderman 1 and you want Spiderman 2 right?’”

In the meantime, the 65-year-old singer-songwriter, who’s sold 100 million albums over the last four decades both with the Commodores and a solo artist and was just named Billboard’s 2014 Legend of Live honoree, is travelling North America this summer with his All the Hits All Night Long tour – his first real trek in a decade – with CeeLo Green as his opening act.

It launched on May 29 in Vancouver and now has three remaining dates in Canada (July 28 in Montreal, July 30 in Toronto and July 31 in London, Ont.).

We caught up with Richie down the line from his office in California to talk more about Tuskegee 2 and find out what it’s like playing shows up in Canada.

When we’ll we get to hear Tuskegee 2?

I’ll do most of it while I’m on tour, and when I say that, framing it. And then probably August-September I’ll record it. And then the first of the year, you’ll hear some magic.

Will we get to hear you sing with more Canadian artists like you did with Shania Twain on Endless Love on the first Tuskegee?

That was so much fun and I want to do that. I want to just make it a special issue where I come up and record some stuff just for Canada ‘cause what I’m finding out is that the loyalty of that country, you got it. When you say you love somebody, it’s done. And by the way, so much talent coming from there, that even dealing with Shania Twain, she told me, ‘You know, I’m Canadian.’ David Foster, all these wonderful people that I know, that I deal with on a daily basis, these are my Canadian partners. It’s really a place that, for me, if I had a choice of really finding a place to chill out, summertime and springtime only thank you, it would be Canada. ‘Cause you guys in the wintertime... it’s bad for my afro.

Would you like to perform in more Canadian markets?

Yes of course... And you’d be surprised to know how many artists are not successful in Canada. Once they are famous in America, they just don’t consider Canada. Canada, to me, has the European mentality which is once they fall in love with you, it’s forever. Whereas here in America, you’re only as hot as your last record. So if you happen to stick around for 40 years in America, you are really doing something. But Canada they are loyal to the core. I’m not just saying that. I believe in what I’m telling you because I can stay away for ten years and come back and the pandemonium of showing up is like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ It’s wonderful.

And how does the more hip hop-influenced and wacky CeeLo Green seem like a good opener for a more mainstream R&B-soul artist like you?

It’s Yin and Yang. If I had to think of it like this, ‘Do I want similar on the show? No.’ I want something of shock value. Like, ‘Lionel Richie and CeeLo Green? Are you kidding me?’ Well, that’s exactly what I’m looking for because I want it to be an evening of excitement. And sitting on your hands is not what I’m going to be doing here. If you’re coming to the show, check your tickets to see who is sitting around you because you’re going to hear them singing more than me. It’s karaoke on steroids. And so guaranteed, you will get the guy singing Endless Love and you’ll go, ‘Will you shut up? I can’t hear.’ And he’s singing to his wife or his girlfriend and the whole thing. It’s going to be an evening of complete craziness. And I love that kind of a show.
