RE: Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas! (continued)

The end of Shania's residency is coming to an end and I feel so glad that I've been a part of it.
I still can't believe I was there and that I had the opportunity to take a selfie with her. It was a dream come true for me to see her perform live.
Just like Cody, I can't wait to see what's next! Hopefully the new album will be out by the end of next year, and I'm sure a tour is being prepared....

Also, I hope a Vegas DVD is in the works... fingers crossed!

Celebrity Preview

By Robin Leach | Dec. 5, 2014 | noon

...Country fans have a smorgasbord of treats, including the final week of shows by songbird Shania Twain bringing to an end her two-year run at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace. She’s been invited back any time she wishes, but, as she told me in October, for now she wants to finish her next album and play dates on the road.

Former baseball player Jose Canseco sent singer Shania Twain a shirtless picture on Twitter and attempted to hit on the married mom.

Even if you don’t like Shania Twain’s music (and I don’t know many males who do), you certainly like what you’re looking at as the singer is extremely good looking.

Apparently former MLB slugger and notorious liar Jose Canseco decided he likes what he sees too as the Las Vegas native decided to hit on the singer early Tuesday morning via Twitter.

Canseco has since deleted the tweets but the powers that be on the internet made sure his attempt to get in the pants of the Canadian born songstress remain.

Okay, hitting on Shania Twain was funny enough but then to include a shirtless photo? Beyond that, it looks like the picture was taken in 2002 with a flip phone. Seriously, how does Jose Canseco not have an iPhone or even something running Android.

As expected, there was no response from the “Still The One” singer who possibly may not have even seen the tweets considering Jose Canseco removed them rather quickly.

You may recall, last week Canseco and his model girlfriend called off their relationship and the former baseball player is apparently looking for love yet again, though is doing so in all the wrong places. Twain meanwhile has been married to an executive from Nestle (yes, the food/candy company) since 2011. She previously had been married to record producer “Mutt” Lange but they divorced in 2010 after 17-years of marriage.

It would have been nice for Shania Twain to see Jose Canseco’s tweets and the shirtless pictures, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t have impressed her all that much.

Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas! (continued) Set to return in 2015 (p. 9)

Shania Twain receives donation for nonprofit during last show at Caesars

By KTNV-TV, ABC13 Action News, Las Vegas | December 15, 2014

After two years and performing 105 shows for 337,500 guests from all over the world, Shania Twain took the stage at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for the last time Saturday evening with her headlining residency show, SHANIA: STILL THE ONE.

Since opening SHANIA: STILL THE ONE on Dec. 1, 2012, the show has received accolades from fans and critics alike, including being named "Best Resident Performer" in the Las Vegas Weekly's annual "Best of Vegas 2014" issue.

In October 2013, Shania opened the first international Shania Kids Can Foundation Clubhouse at Tom Williams Elementary School in North Las Vegas. SKC is Shania's nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children in communities across the world.

The program, founded as a response to the difficulties Shania endured as a youth, is designed to implement simple, yet effective initiatives to increase the potential of students in the program to live successful, fulfilling lives.

To commemorate Shania's dedication to SKC and the City of Las Vegas, during the show Saturday evening, John Meglen, President of Global Touring with AEG Live, and Sean McBurney, General Manager of Caesars Palace, presented the Shania Kids Can Foundation with a check for $5,000.

Meh. I hate corporations. Only $5,000? They can afford A LOT more than that for Shania's charity and the children it helps...

SHANIA TWAIN TAKES ONE FINAL BOW AT THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE AFTER TWO SUCCESSFUL YEARS OF PERFORMING “SHANIA: STILL THE ONE”

Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas! (continued) Set to return in 2015 (p. 9)

It sounds like a decision to do encore shows was made shortly after Shania left the stage on Saturday. I'm thinking the only reason for these encore shows is because Celine has no plans to return. According to Robin, September and October of next year are the only empty dates.

Shania: Still The One ENCORE

Shania Twain ends two-year run at Caesars, set to return in 2015

By Robin Leach | Dec. 15, 2014 | 12:33 p.m.

shania-vegas-stilltheone-show121314-53a.JPG
Caesars Palace General Manager Sean McBurney and AEG Live President of Global Touring John Meglen
present a check to Shania Twain for her Shania Kids Can Foundation during her final performance at the
Colosseum on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at Caesars Palace.

In the two years country pop queen Shania Twain was a resident at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, she performed 105 shows for 337,500 guests — but never one like her finale Saturday night.

It was a blowout blockbuster, highly emotional with tears and surprises — and within five minutes of the curtain coming down, John Meglen of AEG Live and Shania’s Creative Artists Agency Hollywood agent shook hands on a deal to bring her back next year.

Shania will return for an encore series of shows in September and October, I learned. And because the Colosseum engagements are now filled with Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, newly reunited Brooks & Dunn and Reba McEntire and the returning Celine Dion this summer, those were the only 21 days available.

I also learned that there might be more dates in 2016.

“It’s so exciting, “ Shania told me backstage after her triumphant farewell performance. “I’m so happy knowing I’ll be coming back, and I was never expecting to be interrupted during the show to get a check for $5,000 for our Shania Kids Can Foundation.”

Caesars Palace General Manager Sean McBurney joined John Meglen just before Shania’s campfire scene for the surprise presentation. A video highlight reel of her amazing two years was played.

“It’s been an extraordinary two years,” said John. “Shania and her show have received accolades from fans and critics alike. It has been a tremendously successful run of shows. She’s also shown great love for Las Vegas just as the city has to her.

“Tonight is a crowning moment, very emotional, and you could feel the electricity in the Colosseum. We want to have her return.”

For a moment, I thought Shania was going to be overwhelmed and stranded in the theater by the love of the audience. She jumped offstage for two songs and roamed the audience posing for selfies, giving and getting hugs and exchanging kisses. She was mobbed by her polite but very enthusiastic fans reaching out to just touch her.

I’d never seen anything like it. Security had to calm down the zealous crowds. At one point, her microphone was grabbed from her by one fan so he could sing the next line of her song. Security wrestled it back so she could continue the number.

It was a very magical and special nearly two-hour spectacular. Shania, her singers and her musicians played the best they’d been the entire run. It was a moment of glory and an incredibly triumphant way to depart.

Shania told me: “I never expected all that love. It was extraordinary, and, although it was a little overwhelming, I’m glad I got to say hello to so many fans on the farewell stroll.”

The night before, Shania hosted a meet-and-greet reception for fans who traveled from all over the world for her final two shows. They traveled from as far away as Australia, Europe and Asia. Shania auctioned off tour memorabilia to raise funds for her Shania Kids Can Foundation, and even sold her high-heeled shoes to one enthusiastic fan.

As she stood in her stockinged feet before finding a pair of boots to zip into, Shania said: “That’s a first!” And promptly autographed the soles of the shoes.

While she was in Las Vegas, Shania started her Shania Kids Can project at Tom Williams Elementary School here. Her nonprofit organization is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children and is a response to the hardships and difficulties she faced as a youngster.

Before her final shows, we posted my farewell interview with Shania last Thursday. When she arrived on the Strip in December 2012, she rode in on a horse in the middle of a stampede of other horses. On Saturday night, she departed at midnight on a private jet for her home in the Bahamas to join her family to prepare their Christmas celebrations.

“It’s been an absolutely wonderful two years in Las Vegas. It’s all gone so fast,” said Shania. “Tonight is very emotional because I am turning a page in my own history. I’m making steps across this stage I’ll never make again.

“I’ve made some wonderful friends and enjoyed some great experiences here. I’m taking many happy memories with me. I’m glad we had such a wonderful audience to join me to say goodbye to this beautiful building.”

Moments later backstage after the handshake deal for her return had been agreed to, she added: “It’s wonderful news. I’m so glad to be coming back. I couldn’t be happier. There’s no way but up from here on with my life.”

According to some messageboards, Still The One is done and it'll be a completely new concept-show and Shania during her last show said that she might add FAFA to the setlist.
Let's just hope that these new dates won't take her time away to finish and release this too long awaited album.

RE: Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas! (continued) Set to return in 2015 (p. 9)

Considering that I have been in the Las Vegas area with family, it's odd that I have yet to see Shania live. It really has nothing to do with her; I think she still has it and can rock a crowd. Ironically, I would have flown up to Calgary to see her because casino's are not for me. They do make for some really great shows and at least none of the craziness that usually happens in large arenas is kept under control; it's just the atmosphere of those chambers that turns me off. My family and I have worked in those sweatshops with bright lights. Given how tight the gaming industry is with their money, those $5,000 that they donated to SKC is generous. Trust me on this one...

Honestly, I wanted to hear more ballads and new songs. I am not very inclined to pay to see just classic hits sung live, unless it formed part of a variety fest like Lollapalooza or Montreaux Jazz Festival, or if the songs were revamped for the current era (Sting, Madonna and the late Michael Jackson did this). This way the old songs sound new again. I have missed out on opportunities to see retro acts with a repertoire that I adore (e.g. 1980's freestyle, R&B and New Wave pop/rock) because I prefer to stay current. Reliving the past is just not my thing; I prefer nostalgia because I can turn it on and off. However, I do make an exception for jazz and classical music. If Shania goes on tour with an expanded repetoire, e.g. FAFA, TWIM, YGAW and WYKM, and most importantly, new songs; I'll be the first in line. I do plan to buy her STO DVD.

A friend of mine brought this up. Many fans in the Facebook fan community are upset that she is continuing at Vegas. But, Robin Leach was the only one who said there would be an announcement today. It wasn't Shania, her team, Caesars. So, we couldn't have expected anything too large.

barebackwarrior, so casino's generally donate a small amount like this, if at all? Interesting, I didn't know that. Really hoping new music is added to this show. She has nine months to put it all together. And, we have seen a studio pic, and several writing pics on social media. So, I guess any step in the studio, is one closer to the release of the album.

Excited to see what she/her team will say about the month of shows for next year.

I hope it is an updated show (but I would be ok with STO as well). I'm thinking that when she was stating this was the end of STO, maybe she was unaware that immediately after the curtain closed she would agree to more shows. It could go either way I think. Surely 9 months is enough time to make a few updates/changes.

Cody, the gaming industry does everything in their power to minimize their tax burdens and have lobbyists to ensure that they pay as little as possible legally. Instances of them tax dodging are not uncommon and this has cause some casinos to be shuttered such as the Sahara, which is now the SLS. Citizens regularly complain that the gaming industry does very little to invest in public K-12 education, which is the worst in the nation. There are college programs that they sponsor at UNLV and UNR that are gaming related. But if children do not have the tools necessary to graduate high school, how can they benefit from a world class college education?

They also engage in voter intimidation; and gave the human resources staff (my department) a leaflet (more like a directive) that was one step short of coaching the employees on the Republican candidates to select because Democratic candidates would ruin the job market with their increased taxes (used to fund more medical benefits and assist disadvantaged populations) and "intrusive" policies. They made it all look so damning. During my time there, I always avoided discussing politics because I was only there to do my job. There are many books out there (on the Las Vegas-Clark County Library website) that talk about Las Vegas corruption if you or anybody is interested.

Casinos have other ways to intrude upon the lives of their employees such as tell you how to look and dress on and off office hours. If you want to wear dreadlocks or an "unnatural hair color" to work, forget about it. Though those are not my hairstyles of choice, people do have the right to decorate themselves as they wish so long as it is not disruptive to business operations.

My aunt knew a maid who was raped by a guest and the casino was reluctant to adequately compensate for her injuries (she was brutally beaten and left temporarily handicapped) and damages (PTSD). The casino made her sign all kinds of waivers against her civil rights. Though not all hotel guests sexually harass and assault maids and other domestics, this is an occupational hazard. Instances of sexual assault also occur in nightclubs.

All casino's have their "gaming" police (armed hotel security) that strongly discourages guests and employees alike from contacting the real police. They do not observe constitutional laws and if a guest and/or employee gets into a tangle and is not careful and steadfast, can get royally screwed over in no time. If that person asserts their civil rights, and refuses to cooperate with casino demands, they can be blacklisted. The reality is much more murky than this, but in a nutshell, that's how the ball rolls around here.

I don't want to discourage anyone from coming here because as adults, we have discretion and free will. But I think it is important to dispel Vegas myths as some kind of adult La-la land. If you want to be a sinner and have a real good time, you're better off going to the next town over where you live or visit cities like San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Chicago and New Orleans.

So, when I see Shania live, I want to be in a place that inspires happy feelings, even if I have to pay more money to see her. If that does not happen, I will watch her DVD's.

Celine Dion - I'm Passing on the Caesars

Exclusive

1/12/2015 1:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Celine Dion is NOT coming back to Vegas ... at least till the end of this year ... TMZ has learned.

The plan was ... Celine would return to Caesars Palace in March after taking a hiatus last August to care for her ailing husband.

Our Caesars sources say Celine has informed the venue the earliest she will return is most likely at the end of the year. She will not give a date.

We're told Celine continues to care for Rene Angelil, her husband of 20 years. He's battling throat cancer, but we are told he is getting better.

Caesars continues to fill The Colosseum with other acts ... including Rod Stewart, Elton John, Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn.

If he's getting better, why she won't return? In my opinion, she's tired of Vegas. I don't know if she will have to pay a forfeit for not performing.
I mean. there's a contract after all. And she's still the hottest act in town.

Are you the doctor? Just because it's getting better doesn't mean that he is healed. It's cancer and not the flu. Next month it can be worse again. Or the cancer can come back in a few years.

She wants to spend time with him while he's still alive.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mariah Carey is heading to Sin City.

Caesars Palace announced Thursday that the pop icon would open a series of shows May 16 at The Colosseum in Las Vegas. Carey has announced 18 performances, so far.

The show, dubbed "MARIAH CAREY #1s," will feature the singer performing her 18 No. 1 singles, which includes "We Belong Together," ''Hero" and "Vision of Love."

Carey's announcement comes after company lawyers said Wednesday that a division of financially troubled Caesars Entertainment Corp. will head to court in Chicago on Thursday to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Tickets for Carey's show range from $55 to $250.

Carey, 44, is following in the steps of Britney Spears, Celine Dion and Shania Twain, who have performed their worldwide hits at Vegas residences.

Actually, I am.

He had cancer before and that hadn't stopped her to work and perform.

And they live permanently in Vegas now so she won't be away from him that long even if she will return to Caesars.

How I love it when people interfere in other people's private lifes and want to dictate them what to do with their careers and how to life their lifes. I'm not a fan of Celine and don't care about her but the same is happening with Shania all the time and especially on this message board.

Shania Twain Says Las Vegas Residency Doubled as "Personal and Professional Therapy"

By ABC News Radio | February 18, 2015

Shania Twain spent the last two years headlining her own show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, but she spent months preparing for the residency before she ever performed for an audience. On top of being nervous about tackling such a big production, Shania faced considerable vocal troubles as she started getting ready for the Vegas gig. Having the show’s start date as a deadline helped her focus on overcoming those issues.

She says, “The deadline and everything like that and having the team involved, really put me on the spot, and I was up for putting myself on the spot. So, I put that pressure on myself, and took on the show, and it really worked. I guess it was sort of personal and professional therapy really.”

Shania goes on to say she really tested her limits and got out of her comfort zone with her Shania…Still the One residency in Vegas. Fans who didn’t make it to see the show in person can get in on the fun when her new DVD and CD, Shania: Still the One Live from Vegas, is released on March 3. A special one-hour version of the show will air on ABC February 28 at 9 p.m. ET.

Shania Twain And Her Sister Act

February 24, 2015

When Shania Twain agreed to do her residency at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, she had to know she’d have some special support on stage. Her sister Carrie Ann had to agree to be one of her backup singers.

“The idea of going back on the stage again scared me at the beginning. It was intimidating, and I had to build up a lot of courage to take the plunge, because I knew that once I made the commitment, there was no turning back,” said Shania. “So, right at that moment, I realized that to take the plunge I needed to know that I was going to have some support there. And so my sister Carrie, being a beautiful singer herself and we’re very close…I said to her I’ll do this because she was encouraging me. ‘Oh yeah, come on. You can do it. You can do it.’ And so I said ‘Well, listen, how about if you do it, I’ll do it? We’ll do it together.’ And that was just really a turning point for me knowing that she was into the idea of participating and not just being there behind the scenes, but taking that plunge as well. And I felt like I was sharing some of that weight, and really [it] just helps like logically.”

You can see Carrie Ann when Shania’s Still the One Live From Las Vegas CD & DVD collection arrives in stores on Tuesday, March 3rd.

Shania Twain’s Vegas Show Was All in the Family

Very Special Background Vocalist Featured on New CD/DVD Set

By Samantha Stephens | March 3, 2015

The family that sings together stays together. Just ask Shania Twain, whose entire Vegas experience at Caesars Palace was definitely a family affair.

The Canadian-bred superstar’s Shania: Still the One spectacular that dominated the Vegas Strip for two years featured lots of pomp, circumstance, flash and fanfare. Twain wasn’t the only one enjoying the fun.

Her sister got in on the action, too, as Twain’s very special background vocalist in the show.

Yep, that gorgeous gal you seeing sharing the stage is none other than her sister Carrie Ann, a gal Twain declares a “beautiful singer” and a source of encouragement and exceptional support.

That kind of support was certainly welcome at the time Twain was contemplating such a massive and extensive Vegas residency. She admits returning to the stage was a slightly terrifying proposition for her.

“The idea of going back on the stage again scared me at the beginning,” she said. “It was intimidating, and I had to build up a lot of courage to take the plunge because I knew that once I made the commitment, there was no turning back. … Right at that moment, I realized that to take the plunge, I needed to know that I was going to have some support there.”

Enter Carrie, who was more than willing to stand by her sister’s side and ease the intensity.

“She was encouraging me,” Twain recalled. “‘Oh, yeah, come on. You can do it. You can do it.’ And so I said, ‘Well, listen, how about if you do it, I’ll do it? We’ll do it together.’

“That was just really a turning point for me — knowing that she was into the idea of participating and not just being there behind the scenes but taking that plunge, as well.”

It was a great source of comfort for Twain.

“Even though I’m still up there … I mean, I know in my mind, of course, I’m still out there up front by myself in my own moments and all eyes are on me,” she said. “But the people that share the stage with you really do make a big difference in your just moral support, in general.”

And you can’t ask for better support than the kind that comes from your sweet and selfless sister.

See Shania and Carrie performing together on her new CD/DVD, Still the One: Live From Vegas.

Are Shania Twain and Celine Dion returning to Caesars Palace?

By Robin Leach | March 4, 2015 | 3:02 p.m.

Country superstar Shania Twain made it official this morning on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that after 11 years, she’s going back on tour — and it will be her last!

It starts June 5 in Seattle and ends Aug. 24 in Fresno, Calif. For the moment, there’s no stop set for her “Rock This Country” tour in Las Vegas, but her schedule is open Aug. 21 and 23 if promoters decide to add them.

Shania will celebrate her 50th birthday on Aug. 28 and joked: “Instead of 48 cities, I should do 50.”

Maybe those two extra would include Las Vegas? I reported her tour plans and music for a new album in our interview before she packed her bags after the two-year run at Caesars Palace ended in December.

“This is going to be a big tour for me because it’s going to be my last tour, so I’m going to make the most of it,” Shania said. “I’m ready to hang up my hat, so I just really want to go out with a bang.”

Las Vegas fans can catch her road show, which will be staged completely differently from the “Shania: Still the One” shows at the Colosseum, in nearby Salt Lake City on Aug. 15, San Jose on Aug. 17, Anaheim on Aug. 19, L.A. on Aug. 20 and San Diego on Aug. 22.

There’s still the possibility of a week’s fall run of shows at the Colosseum if dates open up in the schedule there.

CELINE DION

Meantime, first rumors of a fall return for Celine Dion began circulating this week with a possible Sept. 23 opening. However, when I checked, I was told that she might be back even earlier.

Meetings were underway today to plan her new show dates. Once they’re set, Shania will know an open week late fall that could be offered to her.

At this moment, Rod Stewart ends his run at the Colosseum on Aug. 16, and Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn resume Dec. 12, so the Caesars showroom has a wide open slate before and after the Sept. 19 Who 50th anniversary North American tour stop.

Certainly dates are available for both Canadian superstars!

We welcome the good news about Celine’s possible earlier-than-September return, as it would indicate that husband Rene Angelil is making progress in his battle against cancer.

Shania Twain's first tour in 11 years also billed as her last

By Randy Lewis | March 4, 2015, 4:13 p.m.

Having wrapped up a two-year Las Vegas residency in December, pop-country superstar Shania Twain is undertaking her first full-fledged tour in more than a decade, a North America run she’s also describing as her final tour.

“This is a very, very important time on the road for me,” she told Robin Roberts on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Wednesday in announcing one last round of shows. “I just feel like I'm ready to hang my hat up in that regard. I just really want to go out with a bang.”

Her Rock This Country tour is set to open June 5 in Seattle and cover 48 dates that will extend the run into August. Twain is scheduled to hit Southern California with an Aug. 19 stop at the Honda Center in Anaheim, followed by appearances Aug. 20 in Los Angeles at Staples Center and Aug. 22 at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego on Aug. 22.

Following the tour opener in Seattle, Twain is to spend quality time in front of fans in her native Canada with a string of stops in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec before heading back across the border into New York to continue the U.S. stretch of the tour.

Despite performing last in just one city, where she gave 48 shows, Twain ranked No. 51 on Pollstar magazine’s list of the top-200-grossing North American tours of 2014, having pulled in $18.5 million. Her average ticket price of $114.02 was relatively modest by Las Vegas standards, and she sold more than 160,000 tickets for those 48 performances at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

That show, "Shania: Still the One," earned her Las Vegas Weekly's 2014 award for best resident performer.

The pop icon arrived at Caesars Palace Monday night in a classic pink convertible behind 18 mobile billboards bearing the titles of her number one hits.

The grand entrance is to celebrate her Las Vegas Strip debut that will bring her chart-topping hits to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace starting May 6 with performances through July.

Called "Mariah #1 to Infinity," the show is timed with the debut of Carey's newest breakup single and music video dubbed "Infinity."

The Grammy winner is among the best-selling female solo artists of all time and joins the ranks of Celine Dion, Elton John, Rod Stewart and Shania Twain, who have all taken up residency at The Colosseum. Pop star Britney Spears performs at Planet Hollywood.

Tickets for Carey's show are priced from $55 to $250.

Director Raj Kapoor: From Shania and Mariah to Oscars and Backstreet Boys

By Don Chareunsy | Las Vegas Review-Journal | March 1, 2017

Director Raj Kapoor can list on his high-profile resume Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, The Academy Awards, John Fogerty, The Backstreet Boys and, upcoming, The Chainsmokers, Coldplay and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

The charismatic and well-spoken Kapoor answered questions over the phone Monday morning about 15 hours after the Oscars, “La La Land”-“Moonlight” flub et al, had ended in Hollywood and two days before his work with The Backstreet Boys premieres in “Larger Than Life” at Axis at Planet Hollywood tonight:

Can we talk about the end to The Oscars last night with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway?!

(Laughs) I’m glad that I wasn’t in charge of that part of the awards! There was a mix-up with the PricewaterhouseCoopers team on the show, but everyone did an amazing job handling it.

It is a heightened time frame with the entire world watching, and I have full respect for the stage management and director and especially Jordan Horowitz, the producer of “La La Land,” who handled it with grace and dignity.

What parts of The Oscars were your responsibility last night?

The screens and music productions, those were my responsibility and work. The screens are anything to do with images and video support for the big, scenic elements and productions.

So you were responsible for Justin Timberlake’s opening with his Oscar-nominated hit “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from “Trolls”? It was a fantastic start to the awards.

I agree — Justin was fantastic. The producers and I wanted to set a different tone, to celebrate why people love Hollywood, to be lighthearted and not have the typical monologue. It really set a great tone for the entire show to see celebrities singing and dancing.

How long did you work on The Oscars?

We started right before Thanksgiving.

Your connection to Las Vegas includes directing with Shania Twain, John Fogerty and The Backstreet Boys. What was your first job in Las Vegas, and tell me about working with Shania and John.

Shania was my first Las Vegas residency. There was an extensive interview process with Shania, her manager and AEG. They wanted a director to helm the show. Shania had not been onstage in over 10 years, and they wanted someone to bring her back and help her realize her vision and to make her comfortable with performing again.

It was a really fun environment. It was the biggest show that I had worked on up to that point, and it was a great experience to collaborate with an artist of her caliber.

I also worked with Mariah Carey at The Colosseum. John Fogerty came about because he is good friends with Ken Ehrlich, who directed the Grammys and is a good friend of the Fogertys and asked if I wanted to work with him, so that’s how that came about.

Your work with The Backstreet Boys debuts Wednesday at Axis at Planet Hollywood. Tell me about working with them.

It came about with my work with One Republic. It was a really condensed time frame, and it has been a whirlwind. Growing up I was a huge fan of Shania, Mariah and The Backstreet Boys.

I know all their videos and songs, and to work with artists who you love is an honor and a privilege to be able to help create the next phase of their career. With The Backstreet Boys, we had three months, while it was about a year with Shania.

When The Backstreet Boys debuts Wednesday night, what can fans expect, and how much longer do you work with the show?

It’s indefinite because their dates are indefinite. They have had a resurgence, and people are discovering their music again or for the first time. Their shows are some of the biggest in their careers, and they are garnering their best reviews. They’re showman, and this super-high-profile show will show why they are the biggest boyband ever.

Our whole vision for this show is larger than life. It is an amped-up Backstreet Boys experience. We looked at all of their videos and choreography, and they have been working their butts off with the vocals and choreography. I think that we brought in at least eight choreographers.

They are dedicated to the music and visuals and staging so that the show really delivers a great Backstreet Boys experience. The show will be a huge joy for fans and the ultimate Las Vegas experience.

What are the challenges in working in different venues like The Colosseum, The Venetian, Dolby Theater and Axis at Planet Hollywood?

Las Vegas venues are absolutely huge, from the audience to the stage and sides. The challenge is to frame the artist to be intimate and human with lighting and video, but then to be larger than life and deliver on that vision. It’s a balancing act of intimacy vs. seeing them at their best surrounded by dancers and special effects and wardrobe.

Do you get nervous before opening night?

Yes (laughs)! You work for months on these productions and cannot wait to see what the audience will love and jump up for standing ovations. You can’t necessary envision what audiences will react to in shows.

What else are you working on right now?

I just finished The Oscars, and after The Backstreet Boys, there is John Fogerty, now at Wynn Las Vegas, on Friday, then The Chainsmokers with Coldplay performance at The iHeartRadio Music Awards on Sunday and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill’s “Soul 2 Soul Tour.”

Where are you based, and how often are you in Las Vegas?

I am based in L.A., but I am in Las Vegas quite a lot with projects, corporate clients, checking in on shows and seeing new shows, projects like the ACM, Billboard Music and iHeartRadio Music awards. I’m in Las Vegas about 10 times a year.

You should buy a house here.

(Laughs) I should!

What do you do for fun when you’re not working in Las Vegas?

I love to go to the shows and the gym. I have a lot of friends in Las Vegas, and I love going out to dinner in Las Vegas. There are some amazing dining experiences in Las Vegas — some of my favorites, some really great dining.

In doing research before our interview … you have the same name as the late Indian actor, director and producer Raj Kapoor, correct? Is that confusing?

I get asked that a lot now! Even as a little kid, but now a lot more often in being in entertainment. Yes, we have the same name, but we’re not related! I’m flattered to have the same name as him.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me this morning, Raj, and I am looking forward to watching your work with The Backstreet Boys on Wednesday night.

Thank you, Don. The Backstreet Boys have been great to work with — they are five stars, five men with five opinions and certain visions and with 25 years of experience. They are really nice people. They’ve lasted so long because they’re really nice to their fans and in interviews and on TV shows.

They’re really excited to be in wardrobe and rehearsals sweating their butts off with the choreography. They love performing and are always at 100 percent. They are entertainers — they are legitimate showmen.

Flashback: See Shania Twain's 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!' in Las Vegas

Global icon launched blockbuster Caesars Palace residency five years ago today

By Stephen L. Betts | Rolling Stone | December 1, 2017

Having mounted her last concert tour in 2004, for the next several years Shania Twain endured personal heartache, including her divorce from producer-husband Mutt Lange. But there was also the delay of new music due, in part, to her battle with dysphonia, a condition that affects vocal-cord control, brought on by complications from Lyme disease. On New Year's Day 2011, Twain married Frédéric Thiébaud, and less that six months later announced the release of "Today Is Your Day," on the premiere episode of her six-part OWN docu-series Why Not? With Shania Twain.

On June 8th of that year, Twain visited Nashville's Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, to officially announce a two-year residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, where she would eventually perform 120 shows, mixing globally recognized, exclamation-heavy country-pop hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" with glitzy Vegas-style production (Singing! Dancing! Arriving onstage with a horse!). To promote her upcoming residency, Twain made her official SinCity entrance on horseback, with 40 horses parading behind her on the famed Las Vegas Strip, a move that reflected Vegas staple Frank Sinatra's arrival on camel at the now-defunct Dunes hotel in 1955.

Shania: Still the One, which officially opened five years ago today, on December 1st, 2012, took more than a year to put together and included numerous nods to the entertainer's past, from the leopard-print hooded coat in her "That Don't Impress Me Much" video to the dancing cowboys from the "I Ain't No Quitter" clip. Dressed in a glittering bodysuit, Twain rode a motorcycle that was suspended above the stage, and her equine affection was once again on full display as she crooned the romantic "You're Still the One" to a majestic white horse, who cantered and bowed to the audience's delight.

A foot-stomping highlight of the 90-minute show was Twain's muscular take on her 1999 Grammy-winning hit "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" Flanked by six male dancers wearing black jackets and ties, Twain's own outfit was the familiar black top hat, short skirt and thigh-high boots from the music video, itself a gender-bending take on Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love."

Twain, who finally released her first post-divorce LP, Now, in late September (without Lange as producer) followed the Vegas residency with her Rock This Country Tour in 2015, announcing at the time that it be her last. In light of the release of Now, she has obviously relented, as she is set to hit the road for another headlining trek in 2018.

Shania and Robin Leach in October 2014

Wow. Robin Leach, who interviewed Shania many times during her 2012-2014 "Shania: Still The One" Las Vegas residency, has died.

***Click HERE to read Robin's final interview with Shania in August 2015 where she talks about her "Rock This Country" tour and the possibility of returning to Las Vegas.

Robin Leach, ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ host, dead at 76

FOX News | August 24, 2018

Robin Leach, a journalist best known for being the host of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” died Thursday night, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes. He was 76.

Leach had been hospitalized since mid-November after suffering a stroke in Cabo San Lucas.

"Despite the past 10 months, what a beautiful life he had. Our Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle and friend Robin Leach passed away peacefully last night at 1:50 a.m.," Leach's family told Katsilometes in a statement. "Everyone’s support and love over the past, almost one year, has been incredible and we are so grateful. Memorial arrangements to follow. With love, Steven, Gregg and Rick Leach."

Leach, who lovingly signed off each episode of his show with his signature catchphrase of "Champagne wishes and caviar dreams," died just days before of what would have been his 77 birthday.

The famed journalist moved to Las Vegas in the late '90s and spent two decades there covering celebrity events for multiple outlets.

“I wanted no other job than to work in newspapers,” he told The Sun in 2011. “I was fascinated by the process of collecting information, talking to people and having the story appear in a paper that would be delivered in your letterbox.”

The British-born personality worked for various publications like People magazine, The New York Daily News and The Daily Mail before landing his big break in 1984 with "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

The syndicated show ran from 1984 to 1995.

“The more eye-popping and outrageous, the better,” Leach told Askmen.com of his show. “We wanted to make your mouth drop. That was the main effect. One picture was worth a thousand words, so if you had more pictures, the less you would have to say.”

Leach always insisted his outrageous persona was strictly for business, saying he was actually very down to earth.

"The cartoon character, that’s not who Robin Leach is,” he told the New York Times in 1990. “And when I wake up in the morning, I wink at myself because I like me — I know who I am. And when it’s time to send the cartoon character off, I just send him on his way."

Our Top 5 Favorite Shania Twain Songs

AXS TV | February 7, 2019

We’re counting down the Shania Twain songs that DO impress us, a lot.

Make way, the Queen of Country Pop has arrived! Shania Twain has earned the coveted title by becoming the best-selling female country artist with over 100 million records sold. Her catalog of hits has earned her Grammy® awards (four to be exact), #1 singles, and multiple Diamond album certifications. She’s helped to define an era of country music and has paved the way for other genre-bending artists that followed. Before she hails over AXS TV with her Still The One concert from her Las Vegas residency, listen to a few of our favorite tracks from the member of music royalty.

#5. Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Released in 1995, this song epitomizes 90s country gold. It’s the perfect combination of clever pop lyric wordplay and country twang, complete with plenty of fiddle. This was the first single that Twain had certified gold by the RIAA and it even earned the title of “Song of the Year” at the Canadian Country Music awards.

#4. That Don’t Impress Me Much

Shania Twain might be the only person that can tell off Brad Pitt this casually. The lyric “Okay, so you’re Brad Pitt? That don’t impress me much,” is just one of the many sassy and quotable one-liners from this 1998 track. It also helped her begin to make her crossover into the world of pop music. Plus, the video and her leopard jumpsuit are the definition of iconic.

#3. You’re Still The One

In 1998, this song was dominating mainstream radio alongside Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” and Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. The power ballad was inspired by her relationship with then-husband Mutt Lange and the public’s concern about their 16-year age difference. While the couple is no longer together, we’re going to assume that Twain now sings this song to the Grammy® Award that it earned her.

#2. Any Man of Mine

In May of 1995, while “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” was still a Top 20 single, Twain released this mega-hit. With a verse reminiscent Def Leppard’s “Let’s Get Rocked” (who also worked with Twain’s ex-husband & co-writer, Mutt Lange) and a chorus dominated by pedal steel guitar, “Any Man of Mine” helped further bridge the gap between Twain’s country superstardom and her pop/rock makeover.

#1. Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

The opening guitar riff, the exclamation of “let’s go girls”, and the attitude behind Twain’s seventh single off 1997’s Come On Over make it the perfect girl power sing-a-long track. This was the song that pushed Twain over the edge of selling-out arenas, to full blown stadiums. Plus, the music video is a hilariously awesome spoof to Robert Palmer’s iconic “Addicted to Love”.

Watch Shania Twain perform these hits + more with her concert this SUNDAY at 9/8c on AXS TV!
