Shania Twain on Dark Inspiration for New Album

The article includes a few of the new album's song titles and what the songs are about. Shania says she plans on releasing the lead single in March and the album in May.

Shania Twain on Learning to Sing Again, Dark Inspiration for New Album

After losing her voice and divorcing her songwriting partner, country music's top-selling female artist is plotting her first album in 15 years

"Do you recognize my voice?" Shania Twain asks, leaning forward on a hotel-room couch on a frigid New York afternoon. "It still sounds like me?" Twain – who sold more than 85 million records in the Nineties and early 2000s with country-pop hits like "You're Still the One" and "That Don't Impress Me Much" – is discussing her first album in 15 years. Out in the spring, it also marks her first recordings since she was diagnosed with dysphonia, a vocal-cord disorder that causes hoarseness and trouble speaking. The issue kept Twain out of the studio for years as she received voice therapy. She eventually found a timbre that's recognizable, but deeper than before. "I'm a different singer now," she says. "There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It's been one of the obstacles in my life I've just had to learn to live with."

Twain believes the illness stemmed from stress – one source of which was her divorce from Robert "Mutt" Lange, which was finalized in 2010. Lange, a music-business veteran who crafted major albums by Def Leppard and Céline Dion, produced and co-wrote Twain's post-1993 catalog, including 1997's Come On Over, which remains the bestselling country album of all time. Their partnership ended in 2008 when Twain discovered Lange had fallen in love with her longtime friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The story became a tabloid saga in 2010 after Twain revealed she was engaged to Thiébaud’s ex-husband, Frederic, effectively swapping spouses with her closest friend. "I've learned a lot about myself," she says. "It's scary to learn how vulnerable you can be."

She tells the story on new songs like "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl?" – a mournful ballad that reflects on the breakdown of her marriage. "It's about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary," she says. "Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you're not the most important thing in a person's life." Another song, "Swinging With My Eyes Closed," is about fighting back against pain. "The fighter in me wrote that song," she says. "I was thinking of a boxer taking a swing, or a baby first coming out with his eyes and fists closed. They can't even see yet and they're swinging with their eyes closed."

"We Got Something They Don't" initially sounds like the celebration of her newfound happiness with Frederic, but she says it was actually inspired by a baseball game. "I was sick in a hotel room and there was Major League Baseball going on just below the hotel in the dome," she says. "I was bummed out that I couldn't go there and enjoy the game, so I wrote this song about the winning team and what I would feel like and I just got into the spirit of the game. It's about feeling like a champion."

The tone of many of the songs changed dramatically during the album's long journey to completion. "Most of them started off quite melancholy and a lot darker," she says. "'Swinging With My Eyes Closed' was totally dark at the beginning. It's just all of a sudden the light went on and there was light as well as darkness. There's a lot of songs that have that contrast on it that maybe are too subtle for the listener to even realize."

"[Writing songs] helped me come to terms with a lot of things emotionally"

As the years ticked by without a new Twain album, the pressure slowly built up to make it something truly special. That pressure increased when Twain decided to write all the music herself. "It needed to be really pure and my own story and my own emotional journey," she says. "I was now alone all of a sudden, and I didn't want to shy away from it. And that's not a collaborative thing; it's a very personal thing."

For Twain, songwriting was a struggle in the years following 2002's Up!, an ambitious double LP that failed to meet the expectations set by Come On Over. She focused more on raising her son Eja, 15, at home in Switzerland. "I wish like crazy that I had new music by now," she wrote to fans in 2009. "It's been hard to put [my writing] all together into song format." She decided to ramp up her songwriting after launching her Las Vegas comeback show, Shania: Still the One, in 2012, which was followed by a successful 2015 arena tour. Twain built tracks on GarageBand before taking them to producers including Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, Lady Gaga) and Ron Aniello, who produced Bruce Springsteen's last two albums. "I told anyone getting involved musically to forget about my other records," she says. "I didn't want it to be related to Mutt's productions at all. I wanted a more organic approach." The resulting material is less poppy than her Nineties hits. "I was reflecting on the darkness," she says. The album has no title as of yet, but she plans on getting a single out in March and then releasing the album in May.

Twain is aware that she's returning to a different country-music landscape – one that has caught up with her forward-thinking pop instincts – and an industry that doesn't bank on CD sales anymore. "It's been so long," she says. "It almost feels like another lifetime." Discussing music streaming, she adds, "I’ve already adapted as a listener. The fun thing is more people actually hear your music."

Twain is not looking to return to the road anytime soon after her marathon arena tour, aside from a one-off appearance booked at the Stagecoach Festival on April 29th. Instead, she wants to get started on another album; she calls writing "therapy." "It helped me come to terms with a lot of things emotionally," she adds. "It's sort of like when you finish crying. When you're done, you're done and you move on."

This is so great!!! Aside the fact the album hasn't a title yet... anyway, this is the first real proof the album really exists

Reading the article, I feel we'll get a lot of pain from Shania this time: definitely, the divorce and the loss of her voice punched her deeply. But I hope there'll be space for her new love life in the album.
March can't come soon enough...

Shania Twain on Dark Inspiration for New Album - May Release Date (Lead Single in March)

Guess that confirms that she prob won't be resuming the RTC tour as she had previously hinted. I still don't get why it wasn't filmed then if it really is her final tour. *sigh* Anyways, so great to hear the single is coming in March. That's really soon! And album in May? Wow the next few months are sure to be fun for Shania fans.

With Shania releasing the lead single in March, she pretty much HAS TO attend and perform the song. Right?

Unfortunatly there is nothing official about the lead single in march. She planned to release the first single before her 51st birthday and here we are waiting again.
This time I hope she'll stay true to her words.
March is around the corner.

I'm just saying if in fact she does release the lead single in March, there's really no way she can't go to the ACMAs and perform the song. If she doesn't that would be a huge mistake. She has to get out there and promote the hell out of this album or else it there's a good chance it may not do too well.

Has she officially confirmed that the album is primarily country? She has clearly confirmed that the music is NOT pure pop music. But I'm wondering if it's "mainstream" country. They are describing it as very"organic" and "somewhat dark". I have assumed all along that the album is a country album, just wondering if she has officially confirmed that's the case. If that's not the case, she probably wont perform on any country awards shows. If it's not country music, I am wondering which kind of radio format she will release the single...

I remember on January 2016 a musician Who was working on Shania album posted a photo on Instagram about his first banjo session ever. So if there is banjo on the album I guess some songs are country. One song for sure Anyway

Honestly the timing for Shania might be perfect to release a single in March and Album in May? Most of the big female singers are taking a break and a different sound of songs might score her higher hits on the charts no? I don't think up had any 1 singles on the country charts? Forever and always on the Adult Contemporary Format. So something new is what she needed anyway am I right?

Whatever type of music it is, it will have to played on the Country radio stations. It's not Pop (Top 40, Hot AC, AC) so it will have to go to Country radio by default. Hopefully the "organic" and "somewhat dark" music doesn't drive the Country music listeners away or else Shania and the album could be in trouble. In my opinion, she should have stuck with the Pop/Country sound which is basically all you hear on Country radio today.

I agree. Sticking with the pop/country sound would have really fit her well. She is known as the queen of country/pop. That is her signature image and people relate to her by that particular sound. Not to mention, it's pretty much what Country radio is playing today anyway. It makes me wonder- did she really want this album to be more "organic" sounding? Or is she simply so resentful toward "Mutt" that she doesn't want her new albums/songs to sound anything like his productions, just because he produced them. If she's steering away from her country/pop sound just to "get back" at Mutt or to erase him from her life, then she is doing it for the wrong reasons. I sincerely hope that she truly wants a different sound because SHE wants it, not because she just wants to simply get away from Mutt's musical sound.

I think she just gave herself (and the producers involved) "carte blanche". And that it happens that it doesn't sound like the Mutt productions. Of course she can't (and won't be able to) duplicate the way he produces/co-wrote songs, so this is the first time we'll be seeing what she actually wants and a more "pure" Shania.

Let's only hope her style isn't the one heard on the album "The Beginnings". Some of those songs are good but the most aren't.
But I guess all the years with Mutt helped her to develop her skills

I'm seeing oh Shania should have kept with country/pop? Honestly who cares if her album does well or doesn't? I love this artist and the fact she wrote all the music herself and wanted to do something else in music opinion was great. Your don't need beach party music to have a hit. I also believe her new album will fit in with the current trends.  Also she worked with some amazing producers and whatever sound we gets please be happy :) Remember Shania learned a lot from mutt and does keep up with the current trends. The album will be fine. She's doesn't need mutt, She just need to be herself.

I'm wondering when in May it will be released. How early will she be doing promotion? Surely with this her first album in 15 years, there must be some promotion, and with stagecoach at the end of April, I'm wondering if it will come out early May so she can do US promotion before jetting back to wherever she is living now (because if she's in switzerland, those flights get to be exhausting - bahamas, doable if she is doing a late may album).

Since this is in fact her first album in 15 years, I wouldn't be surprised if she started some promotion shortly after the lead single is released in March. I bet she'll go on some talk shows and perform the song. And probably at the ACM Awards on April 2.

Then when the album comes out in May, she can do a bigger promotional tour and possibly perform the second single from the album. I think her Stagecoach concert on April 29 will be part of the album's promotional tour. So the album will probably be released on Friday, May 5. That's my guess.

I'm wondering what the first single will be. Shania chose those particular three songs to share with Rolling Stone because they must be what she considers, a few of the best songs on the album. Therefore I would think that one of them must be the lead single. Usually the lead single is the song that is considered the most 'catchy' in some way. I don't think she would have shared those three songs with Rolling Stone and none of the three are the lead single. Its so hard to tell because we have not heard the music. From the articles I have read, people are placing a lot of emphasis on "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl?'. But then again, Shania does not tend to release slower Ballads as her lead single. The lead singles from previous albums (What made you say that?, Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?, Love Gets me Every Time, I'm Gonna Getcha Good) were all upbeat songs. But, as Shania stated, she wants to forget about how she has done things in the past. But I think albums in general release a upbeat song as the lead single. So maybe 'Swinging with My Eyes Closed' or 'We Got Something They Don't' will be the lead. 'We Got Something They Don't has been described as an upbeat "Champion" type song. Perhaps that will be the lead.

I agree. I think those songs will all be singles, maybe the first three of the album. And I don't think either she'll go with a ballad (a sad one) as first single. I bet on "We Got something They Don't".

Shania Twain: My New Music Was Inspired by My Messy Divorce: Writing Was ‘Therapy'

By Megan French | Us Weekly | February 24, 2017

She's still the one! Shania Twain is releasing her first new album in 15 years, and she revealed to Rolling Stone that some of the songs are inspired by her messy divorce from her producer and husband Robert “Mutt” Lange

The track “Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl?” hints at why their marriage broke down. “It’s about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary,” she told Us Weekly’s sister magazine. “Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you’re not the most important thing in a person’s life.”

As fans may remember, music industry heavyweight Lange, 68, abruptly left Twain, 51, for her former best friend Marie-Anne Thiebaud in May 2008. The couples essentially swapped when, soon after the split, the country star was spotted with Marie-Anne’s ex-husband Frederic Thiebaud. The “You’re Still the One” singer and Frederic confirmed their romance in 2009 and wed two years later. (Twain and Lange share a 15-year-old son, Eja.)

Twain, who wrote all the new music herself, has been working on the project for years, and her progress was further complicated by her vocal chord disorder, dysphonia, which altered her signature voice. “I’m a different singer now,” she said. “There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It’s been one of the obstacles in my life I’ve just had to learn to live with.”

The five-time Grammy winner (one of the best-selling artists of all time) put her emotions from overcoming the obstacles into her still-untitled album (the followup to her fourth album, 2002’s Up), which she hopes to release in May. “It needed to be really pure and my own story and my own emotional journey,” she said. “I was now alone all of a sudden, and I didn’t want to shy away from it. And that’s not a collaborative things; it’s a very personal thing.”

Twain said writing songs was “therapy” and the whole process was cathartic. “It helped me come to terms with a lot of things emotionally,” she said. “It’s sort of like when you finish crying. When you’re done, you’re done and you move on.”

'It helped me come to terms with it': Shania Twain says her divorce from husband of fifteen years inspired first album in over a decade

Daily Mail | February 24, 2017

She took a break from the limelight after hitting the big time with You're Still The One and That Don't Impress Me Much in the late nineties.

And Shania Twain says the stress of her divorce from her husband of 15 years inspired her to write a new album after a long absence.

The 51-year-old singer told the latest Rolling Stone Magazine that she wrote some melancholy music after splitting from record producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange.

The couple separated in 2008, amid rumours he had an affair with her best friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud, and finalised their divorce in 2010.

'I've learned a lot about myself, she told the publication, adding: 'It's scary to learn how vulnerable you can be.'

Explaining ballad Who's Gonna Be Your Girl? from her new album which is due for release in May, the Canadian-native revealed: 'It's about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary.  Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you're not the most important thing in a person's life.'

'Another song, Swinging With My Eyes Closed, is about fighting back against pain. 'The fighter in me wrote that song,' she told them, 'I was thinking of a boxer taking a swing, or a baby first coming out with his eyes and fists closed. They can't even see yet and they're swinging with their eyes closed.'

The star was diagnosed with dysphonia, a vocal-cord disorder that causes hoarseness and trouble speaking which she says stemmed from the stress of the divorce from the music-producer.

Shania - who has sold over 85 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in the history of country music - says her voice has changed now in tone.

She explained: 'There was a lot of coming to terms with that. It's been one of the obstacles in my life I've just had to learn to live with.'

Shania co-wrote Come On Over with Lange, her 1997 album which remains the best-selling country album of all time - selling around 40 million copies worldwide.

However, this time around she was writing an album without him: 'It needed to be really pure and my own story and my own emotional journey. I was now alone all of a sudden, and I didn't want to shy away from it. And that's not a collaborative thing; it's a very personal thing,' she revealed.

She told the publication that she calls writing 'therapy,' adding: 'It helped me come to terms with a lot of things emotionally. It's sort of like when you finish crying. When you're done, you're done and you move on.'

She shares son Eja, 15, with her ex-husband. And his apparent infidelity with her best friend spawned one more positive for Shania - she married Marie Anne's ex-husband Frédéric Thiébaud in January 2011.

I'm so excited that its March 1st. We know that within days, there will be a new song! I really hope that she doesn't wait until the very last week of March to release it! My guess is that it will be a few weeks into March like the week of March 13th or the week of March 20th. My hope is that its the week of March 6th! But that might be wishful thinking!

The month of March is going to go by sooo slow! I bet she will not release the single until the last week in March! It would be kind of interesting to know that the album will be called. I would think at this stage in the game, she would at least have a title for the album itself by now, even if she's not sure what the lead single will be yet. Many of the news sources are focusing on "Who's Gonna Be Your Girl". I haven't heard much about the other two songs that she shared. Every source is focusing on that particular song.

Everything We Know About Shania Twain’s New Album

By Christina Vinson | The Boot | March 8, 2017

Ever since Shania Twain mentioned that she had a new album in the works, way back in 2013, country music fans have been waiting eagerly for the details.

To say things have changed for Twain since her last record, Up!, was released in 2002, is a drastic understatement: Her previous albums — The Woman in MeCome on Over and Greatest Hits — were produced by her then-husband, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, but in 2008, the couple split following Lange’s affair with Twain’s best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. In an ironic twist, Twain fell in love with Frédéric Thiébaud — Marie-Anne’s former husband — and the couple got married in 2011.

Twain stepped away from the spotlight for several years, though she spent 2012-2014 performing a Las Vegas residency and, most recently, embarked on her Rock This Country Tour, in 2015. But still, no new music has appeared — but she’s definitely still working on it.

The Title

Twain hasn’t yet revealed the title of her forthcoming new album.

The Release Date

Twain has said that she plans on releasing a new single in March, with the full album coming in May (per Rolling Stone).

The Record Label

Twain is signed with Universal Music Group Nashville. All of her previous albums were released by Mercury Nashville, which operates as a part of UMG.

The Album Cover

Although we haven’t seen Twain’s new album cover yet, all of her records thus far have prominently featured her on the front. (With her perfectly symmetrical face, no one is complaining!)

The Producers

For the first time in many years, Twain needed to find a new producer for her new project. In June of 2015, she offered an update about that process.

“I’m just looking in general for people. I’ve been listening to a lot of records and looking at a lot of music history and trying to determine, ‘Okay, who is responsible for that song that I love, or who is responsible for this record that I love or that sound that I love?’” Twain explained at the time. “I’m narrowing it down that way, as opposed to by genre.

“It’s kind of like dating for the first time,” she adds. “It’s a bit awkward, because I didn’t really know how to work with anybody else. After all those years, it’s been a real learning curve — that is a good way to put it.”

The Single

Per Twain, this project’s first single is due out in March. However, she hasn’t shared its title or what it’s about.

The Style

Fans are used to hearing pop-country hits, such as “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “From This Moment On,” from Twain, but her new record will be “diverse,” she says.

“This album is more diverse than any other album I’ve ever done — not that I’ve done a ton of albums, but it’s the most diverse of the albums I’ve done,” Twain explains. “There’s a lot of variety there, but what I’ve learned about myself is, as a songwriter of all the songs, the emotion and the voice ties it all together as one artist.”

Twain calls this album a growth in “independence,” and though she admits it’s been “a lot of hard work,” she also says it’s “the most fun hard work I’ve ever done so far.”

Though this new album may be different than the others, fans will still recognize Twain as herself — and they’ll hear a lot of rock and country on the record.

“I do think there will be a contrast there for sure. That is already just who I am anyway. Even if I was producing it myself I would maintain a level of contrast,” Twain explains. “I think that’s why it has worked so well to make the records that I make. The rock and country is something I am attracted to so I think that wide, broad spectrum of contrast is going to remain. I don’t think I would ever make a straight rock album. It just wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t make that blend in there somewhere.”

Even though this album is coming after some of the darkest experiences of Twain’s life, don’t worry about it being a downer. She says, “It is a more soulful approach to my songwriting than I’ve probably ever allowed myself to have before. It’s fun music, too. I like to stay positive. I’ll make sure that I do some things on there that make you feel good and happy as well. I’m having a lot of fun.”

The Songs

Twain decided to write all of the songs on this album by herself: “It needed to be really pure and my own story and my own emotional journey,” she tells Rolling Stone. “I was now alone all of a sudden, and I didn’t want to shy away from it. And that’s not a collaborative thing; it’s a very personal thing.”

One of the new songs, “Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl?” is a direct reflection on Twain’s broken marriage: “It’s about feeling unappreciated and knowing that you are secondary,” she notes. “Having to live with someone that has different priorities and accepting that you’re not the most important thing in a person’s life.”

Another song, “Swinging With My Eyes Closed,” shows her resilience: “The fighter in me wrote that song,” Twain says. “I was thinking of a boxer taking a swing, or a baby first coming out with his eyes and fists closed. They can’t even see yet and they’re swinging with their eyes closed.”

Yet another track was inspired by a baseball game; it’s called “We Got Something They Don’t.” The title suggests a commentary on her newfound love, but, Twain tells Rolling Stone, “I was sick in a hotel room, and there was Major League Baseball going on just below the hotel in the dome. I was bummed out that I couldn’t go there and enjoy the game, so I wrote this song about the winning team and what I would feel like, and I just got into the spirit of the game. It’s about feeling like a champion.”

Twain explains that many of the songs on this disc were reborn throughout the album process: “Most of them started off quite melancholy and a lot darker,” she admits; for example, “”Swinging With My Eyes Closed” was totally dark at the beginning. It’s just all of a sudden the light went on and there was light as well as darkness. There’s a lot of songs that have that contrast on it that maybe are too subtle for the listener to even realize.”

The Tour

Twain embarked on her last tour in 2015; it was her first North American tour in 11 years, but she decided that she was finished with that aspect of her career.

“I just feel like I’m ready to hang my hat up in that regard,” she says. “I just really want to go out with a bang.”

The Juno Awards are the same night as the ACM Awards in Las Vegas - Sunday, April 2. So if, IF, she attends one it will be the ACM Awards.

Thanks. Yeah, it's basically a reprint of the Rolling Stone article with the mention of another song... "Others, like Life's About to Get Good, celebrate the discovery of a new happiness."

Well, Tim and Faith just announced their new single today which will be released on Thursday. They will be performing the song at the ACM Awards...

Longtime married country superstars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are finally doing a joint album.

The tandem announced plans for an untitled album expected to be released later this year. Their first single, “Speak to a Girl”, from the upcoming album will debut on Thursday. The Grammy winners are also expected to perform the track on April 2 at the 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards.

Meanwhile, here we are approaching the end of March and still no mention of Shania's single...

I don't get it, A single for March is starting to look unlikely unless she announces it in a few days. The ACMA awards would have been a perfect place to debut a new single but unfortunately why this is dragging on like it is seems strange.

She's still in the U.S. I'm wondering if she's doing promoting right now. Was in Philly and now she's in Miami. I think she'll perform still. Why else would she be lingering around the US?

She isn't out promoting. We'd know it if she was (TV, radio, etc). Shania is always on U.S. vacations and excursions...

Her latest photo I see as a good sign. She used to post photos on a horse or a bike before returning to Vegas. So maybe she's working out to get in shape before video and photo shooting and TV appearances.

I wonder... maybe the lead single and the album haven't been announced yet because her record label isn't convinced about her new music at all. Maybe they're afraid the album and the single will flop and they're trying to find a time-frame to guarantee a high debut on the charts even with low sales (i.e. during the summer).

I agree. Doesn't look like the single will be released this month. I just saw a new commercial for the ACM Awards with Tim and Faith. As I mentioned yesterday their new single is being released Thursday and they'll be performing it on the awards show. If Shania was going to release her single and perform on the ACMAs she would have announced it by now so the ACMAs could start promoting her performance like Tim and Faith.

I'm wondering if you will ever see her perform at live award shows again because of her vocal chord issues. She's playing at that festival in April, but other than that, she says she has no desire to sing live anymore. I wonder if she's embarrassed to sing on live television at this point because her voice sounds so different. I personally think she will just stick to recording music in the studio and not doing many live performances. I have no idea why this new single is not coming out! I feel like she has no interest in promoting it on award shows and things like that. We have waited so long for this music, it does not surprise me that we are now nearing the end of March and there is still no new single or not even a word on the title of the new single, or album.

I was thinking the same thing, she doesn't want to sing on the awards show. I'm disappointed but I was never surprised. If she doesn't sing it live how will she even have a chance of having a hit? Why tell Rolling Stone a single would come out in March? Frustrating!

Maybe it's not necessarily about having a hit? Maybe she wants to make the music without being the superstar she was before. Not saying she wouldn't want it to sell, but maybe she isn't do it to have a hit.

I wonder about Shania's latest tweet about "What a week...Heres to the weekend!" The tweet kind of implies that she had a very busy week because shes looking forward to the weekend. I wonder if she spent the week doing some serious behind the scenes work for the new album like photo shoots, etc..? Or it could simply just be a tweet that means nothing! I guess I'm trying to think positive about the new single coming out this week. I dont know why she would say something is being released in March if its not. But like I said, this coming week has not happened yet.

Yesterday's tweet probably doesn't mean anything. She has made "weekend" tweets in the past like this one:

As far as the single being released this coming week, I doubt it. I mean she still hasn't mentioned anything about it. The single is not going to just pop up online one day without any type of announcement beforehand.

I'm wondering if Shania's latest tweet is supposed to be an annoucement that the single is coming this week? It almost seemed as if she's taking a deep breath and saying "Ok, here we go, its coming! Remember, my new material sounds different".
