Concert review: Shania Twain show full of fun, spectacle and the Phoenix Suns gorilla

By Ed Masley | Arizona Republic | July 31, 2018

Shania Twain kicked off Monday's show at Talking Stick Resort Arena with a musical promise that life was about to get good after making her entrance from the back of the arena.

And by the time she brought the Phoenix Suns Gorilla out to join her after soaring high above the crowd on a swing made to look like an open guitar case on her biggest hit, "You're Still the One," she'd definitely gone the extra mile to make good on that promise.

The music

The set list touched on nearly all the singles that continue to define her as the biggest-selling female artist in the history of country music, from the song that sent her on her way, "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" to "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," which she wisely held off for the one-song encore.

There was even a video montage of hits she didn't get to, including "The Woman in Me" "You Win My Love" and "Don't."

She also shared several songs from last year's "Now," her first release in 15 years, in the course of a nearly two-hour performance that offset Vegas glitz and hi-tech spectacle with bittersweet emotion.

It's been nearly three years since the singer said her last goodbyes on a farewell tour that clearly didn't stick and she made several references at Monday's show that seemed to indicate that this could be the real goodbye.

Shania Now

She also talked about her music a the "upside to experiencing difficult things" in her life.

"I get to put all of that into music," she said. "I've often not shared a lot of that music with you guys in past years, but on this current album, I decided that it was much more therapeutic not only just for me but for everybody out there to understand that, you know, when you do have a low, you're not the only one, you're not alone and you can get through it."

This was all by way of introducing "Poor Me," a song from "Now" that Twain said has become her favorite "pity-party song that I've ever written," reminding her fans "You're allowed to be down every once in a while."

Despite the therapeutic nature of the new material, inspired by the breakdown of her marriage to Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the man who produced all her hits, and the medical issues that damaged her vocal cords and demanded a lengthy hiatus, she never went too deep into the pity party.

The prevailing mood was much closer in spirit to the chorus of another song on "Now": "More fun is what we need."

That's the song she performed after sharing the stage with the Phoenix Suns Gorilla.

The stage show

The stage show was state of the art, from the flying guitar case to the use of large video cubes, which dominated the stage and were constantly reconfigured as she moved from song to song, providing an ever-changing backdrop for the "wild and crazy" night the singer promised after "Come On Over."

At times, the cubes all came together as one massive screen with Twain, her backing musicians or her dancing backup singers performing on top.

There were plenty of costume changes, from the shimmering gown with a mile-high slit that she wore on the opening song to the top hat and coat from the "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" video.

And when Twain disappeared through a trap door after the "sexy grooving music," as she called it, of "Let's Kiss and Make Up," the spotlight shifted to drummer Elijah Wood, who managed to earn the most enthusiastic reaction I've seen to a drum solo since Rush's final tour.

She invited a mother and daughter on stage to talk about what brought them to the show together in one of the concert's sweetest moments.

Bastian Baker, who opened the set with a solo acoustic performance, returned to the stage to join the star on "Party for Two" and "Swingin' With My Eyes Closed" before Twain brought the set to a crowd-pleasing climax with "(If You're Not in Love) I'm Outta Here!"

And with that, she was outta there, returning for a one-song encore that ended in a shower of confetti.

Set list

"Life's About To Get Good"
"Come on Over"
"Up!"
"Poor Me"
"Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)"
"That Don't Impress Me Much"
"Let's Kiss and Make Up"
"Drum Solo"
"Any Man of Mine"
"Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?"
"Honey, I'm Home"
"I'm Alright"
"Soldier"
"You're Still the One"
"More Fun"
"From This Moment On"
"I'm Gonna Getcha Good!"
"Party for Two (with Bastian Baker)"
"Swingin' With My Eyes Closed (with Bastian Baker)"
"(If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here!"

Encore:
"Man! I Feel Like a Woman!"

I knew I wanted to travel across the arena to be able to be close to as many of you as possible, so flying made the most sense! We used one of Cory's actual guitar cases and built a seat in it – in each city we stop in we add a sticker to remember you by!

That don't impress me much: Shania Twain helps out the Arizona DOT as she plays Phoenix

ABC News Radio | July 31, 2018

Shania Twain not only played a show Monday night in Phoenix, she also did her part for public safety in the state of Arizona.

LED signs over the interstate across Arizona simultaneously quoted a Shania smash from 1998 to warn drivers. “Speeding?” “Unbuckled?” “Aggressive driver?” the signs asked.  They all provided the same reply: “That don’t impress me much.”

The Arizona Department of Transportation tells ABC Radio the messages were definitely a tip of the hat to the Canadian country/pop superstar.

“We want to grab people’s attention and make them engage with important safety messages,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“We often tie our unconventional safety messages to current events, like holidays, blockbuster movie premieres or local concerts, as a way to combine traffic safety with topics that are front-of-mind for many people.”

Shania herself was supportive of the creative maneuver, tweeting photos of the signs on Tuesday, along with the laugh-until-you-cry emoji, tagging the Arizona DOT.

This week, Shania's NOW Tour rolls on, picking up Wednesday in Fresno, California.

Shania Twain World Tour laser and visual effects show

ER Productions proudly supported five-time GRAMMY Award-winner, Shania Twain, on her 2018 NOW World Tour.

ER Productions | July 31, 2018

ER joined forces with Creative Director, Rob Sinclair, Production Manager, Joel Eriksson, and Upstaging event production company, to deliver a unique and exciting laser and visual effects show for the country singer.

Shania, who has sold over 100 million records, announced that this would be her last ever tour earlier in the year, and said on US TV, "I want to go out with a bang.” ER were delighted to provide a whole SFX (special effects) package, bringing not just the 'wow factor' of lasers they’re well known for, but complementing them with some spectacular special effects.

ER Productions hit the road with Shania and her team on 3 May, opening the tour at Tacoma, WA. The shows ran throughout the summer, at various locations in the US, including Las Vegas, before moving on to Canada, Brazil and culminating in Europe, in September, and closing in December 2018.

Lawrence Wright, ER’s General Manager, said, “We were really excited when we got the call from Rob Sinclair, working with such a fantastic Creative Director means we get some incredible laser looks which enhance the visual feast of a show. Production Manager, Joel Errikson has been fantastic in helping us achieve our goal and pulling together this stunning show.”

Visually the aim was to make the laser show look as large and impressive as possible. Collaborating with the lighting team, ER Productions used existing rigging positions, spreading laser units out over the whole length of the stage, maximising the space available.

Wright said of the project, “One challenge we faced was having confetti in the air for the whole duration of a song, all ground-based.

To achieve this we used six of our new Stadium Blasters and their fully un-manned operation via a DMX contol system. Using these units, we can switch machines on and off as required to keep confetti blasting out throughout the song.”

He went on to say, “Another challenge was to get the low smoke perfectly covering the stage. To achieve this, we used our new, floor pop-up units to allow the low smoke to spread from the centre of the stage, rather than the sides, where fans can blow it off losing most of the effect.”

Wright also commented, “It has been an honour working with Shania on her 2018 World Tour. ER Productions is very proud to have delivered a unique laser design which is complimented perfectly by our Special Effects department’s breathtaking FX.”

How we did it

4 crew members

30 lasers

38 special effects

Bastian Baker Debuts Unifying 'All Around Us' Video, Talks Touring With & Learning From Shania Twain

By Taylor Weatherby | Billboard | August 2, 2018

If you've caught Shania Twain on her Now Tour this year, you may recognize the name Bastian Baker. The 27-year-old Swiss singer-songwriter is Twain's sole opening act on the trek, making audiences swoon with his lighthearted acoustic tracks and contagious smile -- both of which caught Twain's attention seven years ago.

Twain discovered Baker while he was performing at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival in 2011, where she asked to meet the budding singer because she enjoyed his music. While Baker knew who Twain was, his Swiss-German father wasn't so familiar.

"We all had lunch together, and my dad hadn’t been introduced to her. He was like, 'Hey, so what do you do?' We politely laughed, but she was like, 'Oh, I play music,'" Baker recalls with a chuckle. "And because I had just started in the industry, he told her, 'Hey if you ever need some help, my son is in the music industry, I’m sure we could help you with some contacts and stuff like that.' And she said, 'Oh that’s very sweet of you, I’ll let you know in case I need any help.'"

Fortunately for Baker, his dad's naivety didn't ruin the singer's chances at connecting with the superstar. And actually, she's done everything she can to help advance his career, perhaps most importantly asking him to join her 2018 tour.

The North American leg has been a great introduction to new audiences for Baker, but also a meaningful one for the former hockey player as he's getting to perform in the arenas he once dreamed of playing in on skates instead of a stage. One of the songs he sees fans connecting to most -- when they're not screaming "Take your shirt off!" to the blue-eyed hunk -- is an uplifting tune called "All Around Us," which acknowledges the love that's prevalent in an often tumultuous world.

When it came to conceptualizing a video for the positive song, Baker took the metaphorical route, starring alongside people of different backgrounds (including two that blend into the background) and letting dance unify them. It's simple but meaningful, similar to Baker's music -- one of the main reasons Twain is such a champion of his.

Billboard chatted with Baker to hear about his connection with Twain and the inspiration for "All Around Us," which happens to be the country star's favorite track in his catalog. Check out our chat and the premiere of the "All Around Us" video below.

What’s the story behind “All Around Us”?

I wrote this song in New York last year. We met in the morning with my friend Vlad Holiday. There had been a terrorist attack in Europe that morning, so we were checking the news and I was like, “Man it's crazy, because all these things happen and they're all over the news and I travel all around the world, for years, and I've met so many great people and had so many great experiences. I think we should talk about this more because it's easy to talk negative, but we need to give a shout-out to all the people who are awesome people.” There are many more nice people than @ssholes in my eyes. We wanted to say, “Look around, and you'll see the good. The good is all around us.”

I hear “All Around Us” is Shania’s favorite song of yours…

Yeah, she loves the song. Sometimes we'll be in the car on the way to the plane, and she's just singing it. I'm in the backseat like, "Yep, yep… that's good." Obviously, it's great that she loves my music, but when you witness it every day it's crazy. The other day we played it twice in the car and she was telling us to play it again. It's cool, she likes the song a lot.

Did she say what she loves about it?

I think she just loves the hook. She thinks my English is great on it. She said I sound like I'm an Irish, Dutch dude singing on it. I'm like, "Okay, sounds good." [Laughs.] So that, and I'm assuming also probably because it's a super positive song with a great message. She's all about the lyrics.

I would assume the song’s positive message is part of what you love about it too.

Yeah, of course. After a lot of the trouble and drama that has happened over the last year, it became pretty clear that one of the only things that can bring people together and not care about anybody's background is music. I wish the world was a concert venue, because that's a place where everybody can have fun and not care. To me, it's so just important. Growing up in Switzerland, we're mutual, and I have friends from all backgrounds -- it's just the way it should be. Definitely, the positive message behind the song is something I really care for.

What inspired the video concept?

It's definitely a metaphor of the lyrics. You look at the wall and you first just see the wall, then there's this guy coming out of the wall. Then you look at the curtain, and there's this girl coming out of the curtain. You look at a black background, and then you have this little girl that walks out of it. It's exactly that. Look at things the way you want to. See that there's a wall, but is it just that, or is there something behind it?

Did the dancing have anything to do with the metaphor? Or is there any deeper meaning within the choreography?

The dancing is a very positive thing. It's great to express joy and happiness through dancing for sure. The unison you're talking about, for sure, we're all walking in the same direction, moving in the same direction -- it definitely shows unity.

Is there anything you personally brought to the video that you are proud of or feel connected to?

I was personally proud that I could join some of the dance moves without looking pretty stupid. [Laughs.] Let's not forget that I’m a former hockey player, so you know, I don't have dancing in my blood. Music videos are always a struggle for me -- even after seven years of shooting videos, I'm still nervous on the days that we shoot because I'm like, “I hope this one’s gonna turn out great.” But hey, some people on this video struggled a lot more than me. The guy painted in the wall, it took six hours to paint that guy like a wall. He was in his underwear the whole time and it was freezing, I have big respect for him. He had the hardest time for sure.

It had to be kind of weird walking around seeing this guy painted like a wall.

Well, yeah. I posted a picture at the time we did the shooting when he and I were talking and said, "Sometimes I just feel like I'm talking to a wall." [Laughs.]

Even though you weren’t in your underwear, was it the coldest video you’ve ever filmed?

That was definitely cold. But I have almost died from the cold in some of my music videos. If you check out "Ain't No Love," we shot it in Iceland and I was in the Arctic Ocean. That's like 5 degrees Celsius, that's cold -- really cold. I had to act all cool walking out of the ocean while I'm freezing, and my feet are hurting because the rocks are sharp. I definitely felt the cold on that one. We shot an acoustic video a couple years ago in the Swiss Alps, and that was also pretty cold. I know Shania did her last video in Jamaica or something like that, that looked pretty good. [Laughs.]

Yeah she’s one of the queens of extravagant music videos. Did she give you any tips for “All Around Us”?

I showed her the video, and she definitely had some comments after the first cut that I forwarded to my management. She really liked the hallway part with the nice lighting. She thought there should be more of it, so we did actually at a little bit more of it because it did look really good. Just yesterday before flying to Kansas City I had another almost hour conversation with her on strategies, communication, timing and stuff. She thinks a lot, and a lot of her thinking seems to be for my career, so that's pretty cool. My management is still always shocked that I can give them direct feedback from Shania Twain on the things we do.

What have you learned from Shania on tour?

She loves her fans like I’ve rarely seen an artist love her fans. The way she treats her fans at some of the shows is pretty sensational. She always takes a moment and makes sure everybody’s happy. So I’ve definitely learned that from her and I try to recreate the same atmosphere at my own show. I’ll always try to hear what people in the crowd are laughing at me, and react on it or make a joke on it so we can all have a fun moment.

She is just this amazing pro and she’s in charge of everything that’s been created for this tour. You can’t fool her -- anything that’s not working, she’ll notice it, and it’ll be fixed for the next show. And that’s another way I look up to her -- she’s very involved, and I think that’s one of the keys if you want to have a successful career as an artist.

Have you guys worked on any music while out on the road together?

She actually wrote a song for me that we have not released yet that we might release in the future. The special thing about this song is that she wrote a song for me and she didn’t write it in English, she wrote it in French. So there’s a demo of her and I singing it in French -- and that would be something really special, because she’s never released a song where she sings in French. We might take a minute in the studio after this tour’s done next year to make it a proper song. Whether it’s going to be something or not, time will tell.

Along with "Rock This Country!", it appears as if Shania has also dropped "Let's Kiss And Make Up" from the setlist. According to setlist.fm, she didn't sing "Let's Kiss And Make Up" last night in Fresno.

I probably would have rather seen "More Fun" dropped, but that has a whole skit that goes with it.

Did she only sing TDIMM in that leopard print outfit? Although I don't like Let's Kiss, that's sad anyway. I'm going to concert in Stockholm. It is the last date in Europe. I wonder what will remain of the setlist there.

Shania Twain delivers an energetic, hit-filled set and gets lost in the moment at Staples Center

By Kelli Skye Fadroski | Orange County Register | August 4, 2018

Shania Twain knows how to put on a show.

The Canadian singer-songwriter is a seasoned pro with now decades of experience and hits under her bedazzled belt. When a drama-filled divorce, vocal issues and an indefinite hiatus from music knocked her down, Twain picked herself up and wrote a new crop of songs which eventually landed on her 2017 album, “Now,” her first since 2002’s “Up!”

Twain’s triumphant return began with a residency in Las Vegas, the 2015 Rock This Country Tour and it all culminated during her first appearance at the annual Stagecoach Country Music Festival where she impressed the masses with a powerhouse performance in 2017.

The comeback continues as Twain is currently out on her Now World Tour, which stopped by Staples Center in Los Angeles on Friday night. The production was every bit as grandiose as expected, with countless outfit changes and the use of cutting edge technology with a quintet of large, shifting cubes with crisp, clear screens to make each song really pop. Twain has also surrounded herself with an incredible cast of backup dancers and a solid backing band that she can play off of. She did so with ease Friday night.

Unlike her turn at Stagecoach, which was far more grand and stuck to the hits and some covers with a few drop-in surprise guests in an all-killer-no-filler fashion, Twain leaned heavily into her fifth studio album starting with her empowering single, “Life’s About To Get Good.”

The cheeky “Poor Me” and the self-esteem boosting “I’m Alright” received a rousing response from the enthusiastic crowd. She had a “Magic Mike” moment with her male dancers with the sultry, piano-driven, “More Fun” and the audience stood and applauded during her delivery of the pro-military “Soldier,” which she sang while floating over the floor seats, sitting atop a lift built to look like old guitar case and making her way to the second smaller stage near the soundboard.

Her single “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed” was punched up by including her opener Bastian Baker on guitar and vocals. He also joined her for “Party for Two,” singing Billy Currington’s parts of the popular duet. Of course her hits, including the ones that made her a crossover sensation and one of the best-selling female artists of all-time, were the ones people really wanted to hear.

She didn’t disappoint.

She was playful during “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)” and sassy with “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” Fans sang and stomped their boots to “Any Man of Mine” and “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and couples slow danced to her ballads, “You’re Still the One” and “From This Moment On.”

Twain has so much energy, which is certainly welcome as she belts out her songs and interacts with what’s on stage, however she can get so easily sidetracked. Like a puppy seeing a squirrel, Twain gets overly excited when she spots something in the crowd that she likes.

In between songs she hopped off stage to take photos with a group of women and she brought a bride-to-be and a male fan sporting a swanky leopard print shirt back with her from the second stage to the main stage. She has clearly missed being down in the crowd and closer to the people, which was evident by her entrance Friday night.

She emerged from the 119 section of the arena, taking the stairs down to the floor while slapping high fives and grinning wildly amid a sea of cell phones snapping photos and capturing video. Though these moments offer the audience a chance to get up-close-and-personal and perhaps give Twain a moment to breathe, they create obvious lulls in an otherwise spectacularly over-the-top and flawless production.

Another Los Angeles concert review.

Shania Twain Brings Glitz and Grit to 'Now' Tour Stop at L.A.'s Staples Center

By Melinda Newman | Billboard | August 5, 2018

Shania Twain brought her Now World Tour to Los Angeles’ Staples Center Friday night (Aug. 3) for a glitzy, fan-pleasing spectacle that saw the superstar running through her seemingly endless bounty of hits.

Twain knows her strengths, and while she kicked up her heels occasionally, she left the real moves to her cadre of backup dancers and singers who brought just the right combo platter of cheeky cheesiness (Riverdance one minute, Daisy Dukes the next, anyone?) and true talent to several numbers. She also kept the chatter to a minimum and focused on the songs, which was good because despite a patina of warmth and affection, Twain was still awkward when it came to actually interacting with her fans.

Other than the occasional fiddles and touch of twang, there's never been much that was actually country about Twain's music, despite her dominance on the country charts in the '90s and early 2000s -- and this show was a rock show, replete with thundering drums and screaming guitars.

Five highlights from the concert:

Twain knows how to make an entrance… and an exit: She started the concert by descending from the first level of the arena to the floor to a stomping drum beat and crossed the width of the arena before taking the stage, slapping hands with exhilarated fans along the way. She launched into “Life’s About To Get Good,” and then, two hours later, she literally disappeared from stage as she sang “I’m outta here,” the final line from “(If You’re Not in it For Love) I’m Outta Here.”

Flying High: She’s certainly not the only artist to soar over the audience these days -- P!nk had a similar moment in her high-flying act at Staples in May -- but one of the evening’s best moments came when Twain, sitting on a swing made out of a guitar case, slowed the pace down and flew over the audience for “Soldier” (as footage from Thank You For Your Service, the movie that featured the track, unspooled). She then descended to the B-stage mid-arena just long enough to grab an acoustic guitar (the only time she played an instrument all night) for a sweet version of Grammy Award-winning “You’re Still The One,” as people turned on the flashlights on their phones, waving them high overhead.

Feeling Low: While Twain never spoke directly about her former husband and producer Mutt Lange leaving her for her best friend, she didn’t skirt around the pain she felt. Before launching into “Poor Me” from 2017’s Now, which includes the line “I wish he’d never met her/Then everything would be the way it was,” she talked about songs as “self therapy… I decided I would share my lowest low. Let people know they’re not alone,” adding that she found the song “cleansing now.” Similarly, she talked about the inspiration she now finds in “I’m Alright,” another tune from Now that details her devastation. Both provided moving moments of honesty and authenticity that can’t be easy for Twain to revisit. Without ever using the word, she declared herself a gritty survivor.

Moving Parts: From the first note, the production was a character in the show. Five modular cubes filled the stage and were used inventively throughout the night. For “Up!,” Twain climbed steps to the top of a cube that then rose 20 feet. Other times the cubes would line up together as a video screen or band members would appear on the top of them.

Aging Well: Twain’s songs, most of which are full-grown adults having first arrived in the mid-‘90s, still sound remarkably fresh. Her encore, 1997’s “Man, I Feel Like a Woman” felt as fun 21 years later as it did long ago with its irresistible play on words and uplifting message of female empowerment. It remains a declaration of triumph. The same could be said of Twain herself.

Concert Review: Shania Twain is the Glam Queen-Next-Door at Staples Center Stop

On the penutlimate night of her U.S. tour, Twain touched on the more personal aspects of her "Now" album, but let the power-pop-country of the go-go '90s rule the show.

By Chris Willman | Variety | August 5, 2018

“The best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun,” Shania Twain famously sang in the late ‘90s. That prerogative also happens to be the best thing about being an unashamed appreciator of commercial genre-straddling in its highest form, as presented by Twain Friday night at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. It was a merry throwback to a now wistfully recalled time when women briefly ruled the country earth, and when pop-country wasn’t a dirty hybrid word — or at least didn’t deserve to be, yet.

The Staples show represented the penultimate date of a 46-city North American tour, to be followed by trips to Europe in September and October and some final shows in Australia and New Zealand in December. One does hesitate to use the word “final” with Twain, who billed her 2015 trek as her swan song on the road, before reneging on that threat when she decided to follow last year’s comeback album, “Now,” with another tour. {“I had more stamina than I thought,” she explained at the time, although maybe everyone needs to follow the Eagles’ tongue-in-cheek lead and just start numbering their farewell tours.) The show still feels in some ways like a continuation of the showmanship Twain was up to at Caesars Palace in 2012 to 2014, albeit without the live stallions. You can take the girl out of the Las Vegas residency, etc.

The prerogative to have a lot of costume changes is a big part of the “Now” tour, and some of them involve quite lengthy interludes — like the longest drum solo this side of the ‘70s, or a retrospective of music video clips from her greatest VH1 hits (“We’ll reminisce!” she says, before retreating under the stage) — the reasons for which become apparent when she reappears. The final change had Twain reemerging in a long gown atop a platform that made it appear as if her legs were six feet long, before layers disappeared over subsequent numbers and she was left in a bodysuit that seemed like it could have been painted on.

This would be an enjoyable spectacle for wardrobe aficionados if the songs weren’t great, but there is the matter of Twain still having the greatest and most gleeful bubblegum catalog of the late ‘90s and early 2000s to fill out the bulk of a 110-minute set. The show was predictably heavy on the effervescence of that exclamation point-filled vintage oeuvre and lighter on the more dramatic and personal moments feeling her post-divorce return to record-making “Now,” though she did get to six numbers from the latest album.

The title track of 2002’s “Up!” — sung from atop a very elevated platform, naturally — was followed by her admonition that “what goes up must come down,” leading to the one deliberate bummer of the night, the recent “Poor Me.” The other “Now” choices tended toward the more inspirational, but, of course, nothing could ever be more inspiring — in her set, or in this life — than “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!,” a show-closer that leaves everyone feeling like a gazillion bucks, if not a gal.

Everyone must fly now on tour — it’s a rule! — and Twain took to the air for “Soldier” by sitting on an open guitar case that was borne aloft across the arena, while she played or mimed playing an acoustic. The rest of her show was not going to rival the current tour of her acolyte, Taylor Swift, for sheer vastness and variance of production design, but there were still set-pieces aplenty. In “I’m Gonna Getcha Good!,” her dancers’ suits lit up in the dark, like electric horsemen, or extras from “Tron.” In “More Fun,” which she said would be “the sexiest song of the night… my version of ‘Magic Mike’,” the four male dancers unbuttoned their shirts and interacted with chairs for a beefcake interlude amid an otherwise studiously wholesome night; Twain sang from a respectful distance atop a piano before ever-so-quickly joining in the PG-13 antics.

Those same dancers thumbed their belt loops for some line-dancing during a mid-show succession of three mega-hits: “Any Man of Mine,” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?,” and “Honey, I’m Home.” The female dancers took to Daisy Dukes and the two violinists became two fiddlers for the duration of this throwback stretch. You could say this cornpone vision almost looked like a patronizing version of country from people who have never actually been a part of country, reinforcing the idea that Twain was more of a tourist in the genre than a mainstay who wants to be taken seriously. Then again, anyone who has rhymed “stress” and “PMS” in a country hit has probably earned the right to make the pure country stretch of her show as campy as she wants to.

Plenty of personable moments during the show offered pause to consider what Twain’s biggest influence on Swift may have been, and it’s not the mutual dilemmas they’ve faced over whether or not to “pick a lane” between pop and country. It’s there in the relatability and rapport that Swift surely picked up on, watching her idol. “Relatable” hasn’t always completely squared with the public’s image of Twain living in a castle in days past, but when she invites members of a bridal party on stage for some premarital advice, she’s less Princess Grace of Monaco than a chatty hausfrau-next-door who seems more delighted to meet audience members than they are to enter her spotlight. Twain’s real queenhood, as a woman who has survived as a superstar in a man’s world, with and without a crucial partner, is an unheralded feminism you don’t think much about, and aren’t really meant to, amid the giddy fun and glitzy folksiness.

The article was originally published in Portuguese. I used an online translator to translate it into English.

Stage in the Arena of the Party of Barretos goes through reforms for show of Shania Twain

According to the organization of the event, the structure will receive double the equipment used in presentations of other artists. Canadian singer performs on August 18th.

By Thaisa Figueiredo | G1 | August 6, 2018

With the expectation of exceeding a million visitors, the organizers of the Barretos Peon Festival make the last adjustments in the Park of the Peon. According to the president of the club Os Independentes Ricardo Bodinho, the stage of the Arena underwent an ample renovation to receive the show of Shania Twain, who performs for the first time in Brazil.

The 'Shania Now' world tour marks the Canadian singer's reunion with fans 15 years after the last album. The concert in Barretos takes place on August 18.

"We had to do a complete renovation on the presentation stage. Our stage was able to receive an amount of weight and had to change to double to be able to serve it. The lighting, the led panels are practically twice what we normally use. It's a very complex logistics."

According to Bodinho, the equipment for the show of Shania will be entirely leased in Brazil. Despite this, the costs are not low, since all items are imported and the amount is twice as often used in the concerts of other artists who will pass the arena stage.

The operation for the star's arrival in Brazil also requires a private plane to pick her up in Los Angeles, USA, and her and the team's lodging in São Paulo. Only the cache cost $ 1.1 million, about $ 4 million, reveals the president.

"It's another world for us, a much bigger requirement," says Bodinho.

Infrastructure

The reforms in the Park of the Peon are not restricted to the stage of the Arena. The work mobilized two thousand workers for improvements in infrastructure. The venue won a new block of cabins, with capacity for 800 people, and the family camping, with exclusive concierge.

Besides the implantation of the new lodging area inside the park, the other two campsites - single and married - received special lighting and the installation of energy boxes for use of electrical equipment.

In all, 28 blocks of bathrooms were renovated in the park, and the spaces of the trade fair were air-conditioned.

An elevator was installed in Arena Premium cabin, one of the most privileged areas of the park, to give more comfort and safety to visitors. Before, access was made by stairs only.

DVD recording

For the first time, a DVD will be recorded during the Pawn Festival. Ambassador Gusttavo Lima, who performs on Saturday (Aug. 25), will be the author of the festival. According to Bodinho, the singer has hired a production company to handle the details, but keeps everything a secret to surprise the fans.

"He does not even let us know. The producer is coming here to check everything and make some adjustments to change what will be every day of the event for the recording of the DVD. These are things he keeps with the keys."

Millionaire awards

As a way to value the competitors of the arena, the Barretos Peon Festival will distribute R $ 1 million in prizes for the six modalities. The winner of the bull riding will take a Dodge RAM valued at R $ 250 thousand. The winner of the Cutiano will receive a Fiat Taurus in the amount of R $ 80 thousand.

In 2017, pawn Alisson de Souza, from Taubaté (SP), won the Rodeio Internacional de Barretos and won the prize of R $ 100,000, in addition to the spot on "The American", one of the most important rodeos in the USA.

"Everything here at the party started with the rodeo. We say that the pawns are the same as the soccer players. Unfortunately, our economy does not allow us to give a bigger prize than they deserve when compared to other countries, which is what has been happening. The pawn rises here and leaves for the US to win in dollars, they go to Las Vegas to win the greenbacks, "says Bodinho.

I sent a message to Festa do Peão de Barretos and asked what time Shania's Brazil concert starts on Saturday. They said shows will start at 10:00pm and stage details and times will be announced soon. 10:00 is late! Hopefully Shania gets that time slot and not later.

Well she probably will be the last time slot and closer since she is the biggest thing there and they paid all this money to finally get her there. Can you honestly see her start at 10. And have other acts close? Be kind of strange having the biggest act everyone is waiting for start early. Usually that is saved for the last show.

I agree. But then that would mean Shania's concert wouldn't start until 11:00? 11:30? I really can't see that happening either especially with Bastian Baker opening first. Shania wouldn't hit the stage until midnight or later and play until 2:00am. That would be crazy! And I don't think Shania would go for that. LOL!

you're kidding right?   they spent  all the money to get her there after 20 years of trying to persuade her to come and they will only give her 30 min? lol lol lol   just the opposite  they want her to play as many songs as she can . and what's this she may only be given a certain amount of time ? you do realize she calls the shots and negotiates everything she wants in order to appear there?

Shania's concert in Barettos, Sao Paulo, Brazil on Saturday night starts at MIDNIGHT local time (11:00pm ET/8:00pm PT). By the time Bastian opens, Shania won't hit the stage until 1:00am or later! That's crazy!!!!!!! LOL! It looks like they have people performing all night ... 2:15am, 3:15am, 4:30am.

LOL!

oh i see maybe . She calls the shots either way. 10 local time is when shows start ?

Is he going to be there? I see in his Instagram that he's back in Switzerland right now and about a week ago he wrote that he would work on finishing his new album while he is there. As you see, the first performer starts at 10 pm. If she performs for 1,5 hours then Shania may not have an opening act there.

Yes, Bastian said he will be performing in Brazil. Somebody asked him. He'll be on the entire World Tour.

really?? Shania is really trying to help him out. i didn't think he would be tagging along for Brazil simply because this is not like a normal concert venue and why have him take up time when Shania could play more songs . i think she is investing too much energy and time in this guy but i guess Shania and her husband have been good friends with him for 7 years so she is trying to help out a friend.   He should thank his lucky stars Shania likes his music and took a liking to him.

It looks like Shania's concert at Festa do Peão de Barretos in Brazil will be different than her standard concerts. She will be entering on horseback and I'm sure her outfits will be different as well.

Here are a couple pictures of Shania's custom-made saddle by Master Selas (Master Saddles).

Shania Twain’s Now Tour By the Numbers

The Big Math Behind the Year’s Most Theatrical Country Production

By Lauren Tingle | CMT | August 16, 2018

Shania Twain is having a moment with one of the year’s most theatrical country tours. Her Now Tour visits Brazil next for a performance at Festa do Peão de Barretos on Saturday (Aug. 18).

Here is a breakdown of the big math behind Twain’s Now tour:

16 and 4: Countries and continents the tour will visit, respectively.

7: Number of costume changes featuring ensembles designed by the fabulous Glynda Conway.

800: Pounds her “flying” guitar case weighs.

160,000: Pounds the concert stage weighs.

5: Automated video cubes with 360-screens.

105: Decibels the sound system can emit.

6: Dancers who interpret Twain’s famous songs night after night.

15: Number of choreography routines executed each show.

42: Number of instruments played during each show.

300: Number of lighting fixtures to illuminate the stage.

10: Buses to haul the band and crew in and out of shows.

16: Trucks to haul the equipment from gig to gig in North America.

18: Trucks to haul equipment from country to country in Europe.

76: Number of arenas the tour will visit by the Dec. 23 finale in New Zealand.

132: Members of the touring crew including stagehands and drivers.

76: Number of local riggers hired to load in the entire production.

105: Number of local riggers hired to loud out the production after each show.

I believe they lie a bit. At least concerning arenas - there are 66 of them as in many cases Shania perfoms two concerts in a town.
