Canadian Country Icon Shania Twain wowed Montreal

Montreal Times | June 27, 2018

Shania Twain wowed Montreal – Last night at the Bell Centre 16,000 fans were wowed by a Canadian Country Icon Shania Twain.

Shania entered the Bell Centre in the middle of the Reds section (115) at 9:05 P.M. All of a sudden spot lights shinned on the entrance and there Shania was in a glitter dress and cowboy hat. As she made her way to the stage her Montreal fans sure let her know how much they were looking forward to her show with a standing ovation. It was electric inside the Bell Centre. It sounded like the Canadiens had just won the Stanley Cup.

Shania made her way through the crowd with security all around her, making sure to wave at everyone. As she made her way on to the stage she yelled out “Are you ready Montreal?” and started off with “Life’s About To Get Good”.

The concert lasted just over two hours and she nailed every song. The 52 year old Country Super Star sounded amazing. Song after song the crowd was dancing on their feet singing along. At one point in the show Shania yelled out, “Montreal you guys are awesomely loud!”

Shania also did a tribute and thanked all the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces. She was sitting on a guitar case and lifted to a smaller stage at the other end of the arena while she sang, “Your Still the One!”

A surprise to the fans was WWE Superstar wrestler Kevin Owens was in the house and was waving a sign that said “I love you Shania!” Shania noticed the sign and asked Kevin to escort her back to the main stage.

Here is the complete list of hits Shania sang for her fans:

Life’s About To Get Good

Come On Over

Up!

Poor Me

Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)

That Don’t Impress Me Much

Let’s Kiss and Make Up

Any Man of Mine

Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Honey, I’m Home

I’m Alright

Soldier

You’re Still the One

More Fun

From This Moment On

I’m Gonna Getcha Good!

Party For Two

Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed

(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!

Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

Rock This Country!

Shania Twain makes a triumphant return to Videotron Centre

By Sandra Godin | Quebec Journal | June 28, 2018

Three years after a supposed farewell tour that went through Quebec, Shania Twain made a triumphant comeback Thursday night at Centre Videotron. The 52-year-old singer has proved that she was right to change her mind and get back on the scene, as the queen of country pop still has a lot to offer.

And the public is still behind her. As proof, more than 13,000 spectators were at the rendezvous. The pretext for her return to the spotlight: the release of the album Now, the first in 15 years, after a difficult period of her life - a divorce and Lyme disease - topics that she addresses moreover without detour.

Her return is acclaimed wherever she goes, and Quebec was no exception yesterday. Thousands of spectators were standing before the singer made her entrance through the crowd at the back of the amphitheater, clutching several hands in passing.

"Quebec City, are you ready?" She said to a jubilant audience, shining brightly in her long, slit, scintillating dress.

In front of an orgy of colored projections, the singer then set the tone for a demanding and flamboyant concert, whereas it joined little by little musicians and dancers. Accordions, maracas, and violins were part of the party - just like a woman behind the drums on fire, to the sound of the new "Life's About To Get Good".

"I am very happy to be here in Quebec city. Everyone who is with me on tour says it's the best city. And it's really true. Quebec is home, "said the woman who visited the capital several times, even when she's not on tour.

Back in time

From her new album with mixed reviews, Shania Twain chose wisely six of the twelve new pieces, and it's very good: the public did not really come for them.

The audience has fueled the nostalgia for its many hits , which she has all made. It's a delirious crowd, standing up, who sang "Honey I'm Home", "Any Man Of Mine", "Don't Be Stupid", "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Up!", among others.

The singer was in a splendid form, changing sexy and glamorous costumes several times. There was leopard in abundance as much in the projections as on her costumes, her signature dress since ... 1995. A projection of excerpt from her old videos has also shown the progress made since.

Visually impressive, with her five giant moving cubes that moved with the songs, her ultra-sparkling projections, her confetti explosions and her lasers, Shania Twain offered a concert that blended country, pop, rock and glamor, which has nothing to envy to artists who are half her age.

Above the crowd

During the touching "Soldier", the singer sat in a swing that strolled over the crowd. In this way she went on a tiny stage in the middle of the pit, where she grabbed an acoustic guitar, before taking off again singing "You're Still The One", over a tide of cell phones.

With Swiss Bastian Baker, who was the first part, she formed an energetic duo on "Party For Two", just before one of the new songs from Now, "Swinging With My Eyes Closed", with reggae accents.

After a long ovation that sounded like a declaration of love, the famous first "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" created an explosion of joy, opening the reminder.

Certainly, the singer does not have the voice of yesteryear, which was affected by Lyme disease a few years ago. But her passion and energy seem strong enough to last for many more years.

Local teen battling rare brain cancer hopes to meet her idol Shania Twain

FOX 29 - Philadelphia | June 27, 2018

- 15-year-old Brianna had tickets to see her idol Shania Twain next month, but brain cancer will keep her in the hospital and she'll miss her dream concert. Friends are hoping to convince Shania to visit or send a video.

If anything helps Brianna Disney forget even for one minute about her rare form of brain cancer she’s had since birth it's the music of Shania Twain. It sounds like a dance party these days through the pediatric intensive care unit at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children.

"I think her songs are the best country songs,” she told FOX 29's Chris O'Connell.

The 15-year-old says she’s the country music star's biggest fan since she was 6.

"When she’s having the toughest times that’s when she plays Shania,” her mom, Aimee Disney, said.

Last Christmas, she got tickets to see her idol live on stage at the Wells Fargo Center in a couple weeks.

"It would mean the world to me. Actually, it would be a dream come true," Brianna said.

Sadly, that dream may not come true. Brianna who lost her father to cancer 8 year ago is now in the fight for her life with yet another medical setback. She has had 3 brain surgeries in the last month and it may prevent her from seeing her dream concert on July 12th.

“I play her songs from that album over and over. I don’t know how many times," she explained.

When friends heard she may miss her dream show  they started a social media campaign hoping to bring Shania to Brianna. They are requesting from the star a personal visit or even a video message to her biggest fan.

"She’s had such a hard time and to have something nice happen for her when she’s had so many bad things happen it would mean everything—everything,” her mom said.

Shania, she may not get to see you or meet you, but Brianna did want to pass along this message:

"I love you and I always wanted to meet you.”

Bastian Baker cooking up warmup set for Shania Twain

By Scott Tady | The Times | June 30, 2018

PITTSBURGH — Bastian Baker played pro hockey in Switzerland, foxtrotted on France’s “Dancing With The Stars” and coached contestants on Belgium’s “The Voice.”

Though U.S. audiences just now are discovering the 27-year-old Swiss singer as he opens shows for country superstar Shania Twain. Their tour visits PPG Paints Arena on July 17.

“Think Shawn Mendes meets Thomas Rhett meets Ryan Tedder” the Tampa Bay Times said in describing Baker, whom women have been lining up to meet at his merch table as soon as he finishes his nightly duties as Twain’s warmup act.

Baker also comes out during Twain’s set to sing a duet on “Party For Two” and play guitar on her “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed.”

“I get to feel like a rock star,” Baker said in perfect English, one of the five languages he speaks.

Having already forged brand partnerships with Hugo Boss and Harley Davidson, Baker (birth name Bastian Kaltenbacher) followed in his father’s skates, and became a pro hockey player in Switzerland, but quit at age 19 to focus on a singing career.

“I still follow hockey. The first thing I do once I wake up is check the hockey recap on my NHL app,” Baker said. “This tour with Shania Twain is playing hockey arenas so I get to see the locker rooms and walk around the buildings; that takes an already great tour and makes it even better.”

He’s excited his first trip to Pittsburgh will give him a behind-the-scenes look at where the Penguins play, as someone who’s been following Sidney Crosby’s career since playing hockey in a pee wee league championship in the same building where Crosby played later that night in a junior championship.

“The whole stadium was packed because everyone wanted to see him,” Baker said. “They said he’s the guy who’s going to break all Wayne Gretzky’s records.”

“Sid (Crosby) is in Switzerland right now practicing with a Swiss team,” Bastian said in a June phone interview (the Penguins’ captain was working out with HC Davos at their home rink in Switzerland). “I’ve got a good friend from Zurich who texted me from a club and said, ‘Dude, I just saw Sidney Crosby.’ Pittsburgh is definitely a great hockey club with those back-to-back Stanley Cups. I love to watch them play.”

He watched Crosby hoist the Stanley Cup in person at Game 6 of the 2017 finals, though Baker was there rooting for the home team, the Nashville Predators. He ended up moving to Nashville at the insistence of his friend, Swiss hockey star-turned-Predators captain Roman Josi.

“Roman Josi reached out to me and said ‘I’m playing in Nashville now. It’s Music City. You should come check it out.’ It was Josi who booked my first gig there at Douglas Corner Cafe, a live music venue. I fell in love with the city and started making a lot of connections with songwriters and pretty soon had 60 songs written.”

Baker always loved music, and got his first big break — the one that convinced him to put away his skates — back home in Switzerland as a teenager playing a small bar in the mountains.

“That was a crazy night. I was 19 years old and just playing for free food and free drinks over three nights. I had finished my set but someone said you might want to sing some more songs because Claude Nobs just walked in.”

Nobs, the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival — the “funky Claude” referenced in Deep Purple’s rock classic “Smoke on The Water” — had a lot of influence in the music industry.

“So I went back on to play a few more songs, and Claude came to the stage with a harmonica and we jammed for a bit,” Baker said. “He told the crowd, ‘I don’t know who this young guy is, but he’s gonna play the Montreux Jazz Festival this summer.’”

Nobs lived up to his word, and Baker played Montreux. By 20, he had a hit, “I’d Sing For You,” climbing the Swiss and Belgium charts.

Meanwhile, Twain and her husband saw him perform at Montreux, and later reached out to invite him to lunch.

“I knew her from a couple of her songs but that was it, so I didn’t freak out,” Baker said.

They became friends and stayed in touch as Baker’s career continued to flourish overseas, including more charting songs and TV appearances.

When Twain needed an opening act for her 2018 tour, she picked Baker, and has been telling her audiences if they were in Switzerland, “I’d be opening for him.”

Baker hopes this spotlight time on the Twain tour will boost his current single “All Around Us,” produced by 30-time Grammy nominee Jacquire King (Niall Horan, Kings of Leon).

A few of Baker’s songs on Spotify have a One Republic-ish feel.

“I’m a big Ryan Tedder fan so that sounds like a compliment to me,” Baker said.

“I never know how to describe my music. I don’t think of genres when I write a song,” Baker said. “I just try to write good melodies, then put some good words to them so everyone can sing along. That’s what’s good about touring with Shania. She’s not country, she’s not pop, she’s not rock, she’s all of it. We’re the same that way.”

Baker’s been working on a new album in Nashville that may be out by year’s end.

“I don’t see this as my fourth record. It’s more like my first album for the second time, if that makes sense. It’s like a whole new experience with so many different sounds.”

He’s stripped down his sound on this tour.

“My performance is literally me and a guitar for a half hour. Six songs and one cover. I talk to the crowd. It’s very relaxed and easygoing. The more the crowd gives me, probably the more I give back.”

If the Pittsburgh crowd demands it, he could bust out a dance move he learned on France’s “Dancing With The Stars.”

“That almost feels like a different life,” Baker said. “That was probably the most scared I’ve ever been. Here I am at 20, and I’ve got to dance a tango in front of 6 million French people. I was freaking out.”

He’s more chill at his merch table, where Pittsburgh concertgoers will find him immediately after his set. Usually a few hundred people are lined up.

“They buy my CDs and T-shirts and posters. I make sure we take pictures.”

If time starts running out, “I have them put their phones in selfie mode and I run through the line and make sure to at least take a picture with everyone.”

Because trust him, you don’t want to miss any of Twain’s set.

“I watch her show every night and see the crowd go nuts on every song. She does everything so good, from the stage production to how she interacts with the crowd.”

This will only be Twain’s fourth time playing the Pittsburgh area since she became the best-selling female country artist of all time.

“Make sure you come out early,” Baker said.

Don’t worry about Shania, she’s back and she’s “alright”

Shania Twain's still the queen of country pop, writes Graham Rockingham

By Graham Rockingham | The Hamilton Spectator | July 1, 2018

There's no denying it. Shania Twain had a rough few years. Her husband-producer took up with her best friend, leading to a messy divorce.

Then there was that nasty bout with Lyme disease and almost losing her voice to a condition called dysphonia.

But the queen of country pop is back and Saturday night at Hamilton's FirstOntario Centre, Shania made it clear that she wasn't there to wallow in despair. She was there to confront it head on.

Shania's battle back from those sad years provided the inspiration for many of the songs on her new album "Now" – her first studio effort in 15 years – and Shania didn't hesitate to showcase them.

She opened her concert with "Life's About to Get Good, " a song that opens with the brutally honest "I wasn't just broken, I was shattered."

She then sprinkled six more of the new songs into her two-hour set, placing them among classic hits like "Come On Over," "Up," "Honey I'm Home" and "That Don't Impress Me Much."

Before singing "Poor Me," her new anthem to self-pity, Shania explained to the near-capacity audience that she made a conscious decision to pour her heart into the new material.

"I decided the new album would be more intimate and personal," she said. "This next song gives you a little bit of insight into the reality of being a human being."

But the theme of the night was expressed in "I'm Alright," a song Shania, 52, said she "wrote about the light at the end of the tunnel."

For the most part, the concert was a highly choreographed and upbeat affair, filled with multiple costume changes and a dazzling array of special effects.

Shania entered the arena from the mezzanine, walking down the stairs into the crowd and crossing the entire length of the floor, high-fiving her fans.

At one point she was hoisted on a swing shaped like a guitar case and floated over the crowd while singing "You're Still the One" with her fans.

Shania, 52, then paced the stage while a team of six dancers and backup singers pranced around her.

The true star of the show, however, was the stage itself, a spectacular piece of high-tech gadgetry dominated by five large boxes which seemed to be in constant movement — up, down, sideways and around, sometimes hiding the backing band and sometimes providing them with high-level platforms. Constantly changing video displays seemed to fill the entire rig.

When Shania finished her closing number "I'm Outta Here," the crowd's demand for an encore was deafening. There was never a doubt and Shania returned with another costume change for "Man! I Feel Like a Woman" and "Rock This Country."

We don't have to worry about Shania. She's more than "alright." She's still the queen of country pop.

Shania Twain Takes Fans Behind-the-Scenes at the Making of Her Now World Tour

By Dave Quinn | PEOPLE | July 2, 2018

Shania Twain is pulling back the curtain on her acclaimed Now Tour.

The singer and reigning queen of country pop is currently touring the country on the North American leg of her world tour — which kicked off in May and will run through August before heading overseas.

So how’d it all come together? Twain and company tell all in a new mini-documentary that PEOPLE is premiering exclusively.

In it, fans can see everything from the rehearsal process to opening night in Tacoma, Washington.

“I’m very excited to get the tour on the road,” Twain, 52, says in the clip. “Once we get in front of the audience and they go, ‘Yay,’ it makes every day interesting and worthwhile.”

Rob Sinclair, Twain’s creative director, says that the singer is “particularly good” at knowing what she wants.

“It’s been really fun to see how we can match the old classics that people are familiar with and then how we stage these news songs to help introduce them,” he says. “It’s a completely new show, totally different from anything you’ve ever seen from Shania Twain before.”

Helping that along are multiple oversized LED boxes, some of which send singers, band members, and Twain herself soaring up in the air.

“It’s complete insanity,” says guitarist Joshua Ray Gooch. “I’m not a fan of heights. They sent me up to the highest point. Shania is up really high as well. I don’t know how she’s doing it.”

Twain released her latest album, Now, in September. The 12-track LP debuted on at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It was her first new album in 15 years.

Singles of the record have included “Life’s About to Get Good” and “Swingin’ with My Eyes Closed” — the later which Twain premiered on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Twain has won five Grammys and remains the top-selling female country artist of all time, with more than 90 million albums sold worldwide.

Her Now Tour will play the Budweiser Gardens in London, Canada on Tuesday.

Review: Shania's better 'Now' than ever

By Joe Belanger | The London Free Press | July 3, 2018

Shania Twain is back, Now.

The 52-year-old singer-songwriter from Timmins who climbed the musical charts to become known as the Queen of Country Pop brought it all to London’s Budweiser Gardens and more.

Twain is touring in support of her new album, Now, which has spawned several singles to date, including her opening number, Life’s About To Get Good.

But before delivering a note, the diminutive star walked through the entire arena to be greeted by adoring fans, climbed on the stage and started singing.

Dressed in a floor-length black sequined gown and several inches taller on platform shoes, Twain kept the moves to a minimum and sang, clearly enjoying herself and the crowd.

There were six back-up singer/dancers on stage and a very talented band hidden by large blocks illuminated by patterns such polka dots and leopard markings, the blocks rising and lowering at times to reveal the band.

The five-time Grammy winner wasted no time winning the crowd as she launched into Come On Over, reminding all of the 1997 mega-album that catapulted Twain into stardom, the biggest selling album by a female ever.

“I don’t know how many of you know this, but I’m from Timmins Ontario,” said Twain in a teasing tone.

“And look how far I’ve come . . . to London Ontario!”

It was a fun night with a folksy feel to it and Twain’s vocals were mostly strong, although they seemed a bit challenged at times, or just lost behind the music.

She played a handful of songs from her new album with the rest a selection of mega-hits from the last 20 years, as well as a medley of videos of songs, all hits, that led up to her live performance of From This Moment On.

Now is Twain’s fifth studio album, her first in 15 years, but it’s clear she’s lost nothing when it comes to writing and performing.

Having sold well over 100 million albums over her career, Now topped the charts when it was released after more than a year of anticipation. She played Poor Me, I’m Alright, Life’s About To Get Good and an interesting tribute to the military, Soldiers, that opened with a gorgeous piano solo by one of the talented musicians, who also played fiddle, horn and bass. The drummer was also a treat, performing a solo during a costume change that was combined with kiss cam.

During Soldier, Twain climbed onto a swing and was carried the length of the arena to another stage where she was handed a guitar and played You’re Still The One.

When she returned to the main stage, she put her arm around a woman (Lacey from Woodstock) in the crowd and said, “Why don’t you come with me.”

They walked to the stage together for a selfie.

It’s been a difficult 15 years for the Queen of Country Pop, as she’s called, first having gone through a nasty divorce with producer husband Mutt Lang in 2008 after it was disclosed he had an affair with Twain’s best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. A year after the divorce, Twain remarried to Thiébaud’s husband, Swiss Nestlé executive Frédéric Thiébaud.

She also suffered serious health issues including a severely weakened singing voice caused by Lyme disease and dysphonia, forcing her to retire from performing. But she recovered has been performing off and on for the last decade.

The night’s opening act was Bastian Baker from Twain’s adopted home of Switzerland, a fine singer and competent guitarist who delivered a solid six-song set and then joined Twain on stage towards the end of the show, including a duet, Party For Two.

One of her last numbers was the single off Now, Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed, a fabulous tune the audience cheering and applauding, confirming the star still has the writing chops.

Twain’s costume changes were many, often into another spectacular full-length gown, although her change into a sheer gown with studded leather jacket for Honey, I’m Home was priceless.

If you go:

What: Shania Twain Now Tour with special guest Bastian Baker.

Man, Shania Twain feels like a comeback

After a rocky period, the singer is back on tour and performing at the Wells Fargo Center

By Ed Condran | The Intelligencer | July 4, 2018

It’s fitting that just prior to Taylor Swift’s pair of gigs next Friday and Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field, Shania Twain will perform July 12 at the Wells Fargo Center.

An argument could be made that if there was no Twain, the version fans know of Swift wouldn’t exist. Much like Swift, Twain was a young, energetic, videogenic singer, who leaned on a producer who helped mold her many hits. Swift relies on Swedish knob twiddler Max Martin and Twain had her husband Mutt Lange.

Lange transformed Twain from a forgettable country singer to a rock star. Twain went from sporting bland denim to leather and thigh high boots, which again recalls Swift, who morphed from the girl-next-door to a sex symbol over recent years.

The biggest hits of AC/DC and Def Leppard’s career were produced by Lange. “Working with Mutt was like working with no other producer,” Def Leppard vocalist Joe Elliott says. “He knows how to make hits. He’ll work you until you’re dead tired but it’s worth it. He did that with us and he did it with Shania. He helped make her songs perfectly catchy. But she had a lot to do with it. What a great talent.”

Twain, 52, like Swift, didn’t become just a star. She became a very successful empowering figure. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” became an anthem for females. “Come On Over,” the album, which featured her breakthrough hit, sold more than 40 million copies, the most ever by a female recording artist. It seemed as if Twain, who grew up a Canadian farm girl, was infallible. The ’90s were her period. But then everything went awry the following decade.

Twain lost her, voice courtesy of Lyme disease. She also lost her marriage. Lange left Twain for her best friend. She recovered the former but she and Lange never reconciled. Twain never thought that she would sing again, and didn’t record a song for 15 years. She believed that her 2002 tour, which ended in 2004, was her last. However, thanks to surgery, Twain is back on the road. She had laryngoplasty, an operation to reconstruct the vocal box.

The charismatic performer started a Las Vegas residency in 2012, and followed with her comeback album, “Now.” Twain, who wrote the collection of revelatory songs, doesn’t deliver the hooks like her ex-husband but she pens vulnerable, moving songs inspired by her husband’s adultery and her former friend’s actions.

But Twain’s early life also was far from perfect. She grew up in an abusive environment in the Canadian hinterlands, where, she wrote, alcohol abuse was prevalent. Twain claims in her book that a third of her relatives committed suicide.

Twain toughed it out personally and professionally. If her show is anything like what she presented during the ’90s, expect a provocative and sassy performance from one of pop music’s greatest comeback stories.

If You Go

Shania Twain appears July 12 at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Pattison Ave., Philadelphia. Tickets are $39.95, $49.95, $54.95, $69.95 and $99.95. Show time is 8 p.m. For more information: 215-336-3600 or wellsfargocenterphilly.com

The Farr Side: Shania Twain, then and ‘Now’

By David T. Farr | Telegram.com | July 5, 2018

Seldom does an artist shake up things the way Shania Twain did in the mid-1990s.

Twain rewrote the record book numerous times to become the most successful female country artist of all time, while also becoming a world-wide pop phenomenon.

Last fall, Shania Twain released her first full album of new material in almost 15 years. “Now” debuted at No. 1.

All year long she’s been selling out venues on her latest tour “2018 Now Tour.” On July 18, she takes on Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, again to treat fans to another of her great live sets.

I caught Shania twice, each time at Van Andel Arena. It was the “Up! Tour.” I’ll never forget the first time I saw her. I was there to review the show. I took my mom along, because it seemed like it would be an exciting night to enjoy some great music. Little did we know, we had front row seats. It was awesome. Twain was in top form. Her enthusiasm was contagious and the band was mesmerizing.

he show was like a “Greatest Hits” CD playing non-stop. The stage was in-the-round and she worked all sides of the arena. She’s quite the entertainer, one who feeds off the crowd’s adrenalin.

Mom and I had a ball. I was already a big fan, but she came away a huge fan, too. She talked about her for months afterward, a sure sign of a great concert experience.

About eight months later, Twain announced a second visit to Van Andel. Obviously, I was going. This time, I took my nephew, Candin.

At one point in the first show, Twain had performed in the audience. I thought about how people seated nearby must have felt. So I purchased a pair of tickets near that area for the second appearance. The night came and we took our seats. I can remember Candin saying, “Boy, I bet you and grandma loved being in the front row.” I chuckled and said something like that I attended enough concerts to know the front row is not always the best place.

The show began and he was excited, but nearly as excited as I was, because I knew exactly what she was going to do.

This concert was identical to the first, meaning she was likely to sit directly behind us for a couple of songs.

Sure enough, after intermission the lights dimmed and there was Shania seated behind us. It was so cool. Candin’s reaction was priceless. I think I heard “Oh My God” like a hundred times. She then sang, “You’re Still The One.”

Twain is such an awesome artist to see live. I can’t say that about all singers.

Twain’s legacy with three back-to-back diamond-selling albums “The Woman In Me,” “Come On Over” and “Up!” is impressive, but it’s hearing the incredible list of songs live that blows you away, such as “Any Man Of Mine,” “If You’re Not In It For Love (I’m Outta Here),” “Come On Over,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “You’re Still The One” and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good,” among many others. They can make you feel good.

Bastian Baker discusses touring with Shania Twain, 'Love on Fire'

By Markos Papadatos | Digital Journal | July 5, 2018

Singer-songwriter Bastian Baker chatted with Digital Journal. Baker is out on the road touring with country-pop mega-star Shania Twain on her World Tour.

Twain personally invited him to join her on tour. She discovered Baker at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland when he was 18 years old, and they've been great friends ever since. Bastian calls Twain his musical mentor. "She really liked my music, and we connected," he said.

On July 14, Baker will be performing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with Shania Twain. "I have dreamed of playing at the Barclays Center. It is such an iconic venue, and New York is my favorite city in the United States," he said. "I am super excited for that show."

Baker revealed that he will be kicking off his opening set at the Barclays, solo and acoustic. "It's just me on guitar and vocals. I love playing that way, and every time I go on stage with my guitar, people pay more attention, and I can take my own rhythm and I interact better with the audience. I am way more free than if I had my whole band with me," he said. "I love playing with my band, but that works better at festivals, and places where we play our own shows.

Regarding his song, "Love on Fire," Baker said, "It is a fun story. In January of 2016, I was in Switzerland, and a new friend of mine and I were hanging out. I told her that I am a singer-songwriter, and she didn't know what that meant. I told her I write songs and I sing them. I grabbed my guitar and I showed her. I started singing this melody, and she really liked it and encouraged me to write it. A week later, I finished it. This song talks about the little details that make a relationship great. We filmed the video for the song in Nashville."

After ditching his professional hockey career to become a singer-songwriter, Baker is a brand ambassador for the likes of Hugo Boss, Omega, Audi and Harley Davidson. He speaks five different languages, has shared the stage with Elton John and the MTV Europe Music Awards. "Growing up in Switzerland is kind of a good deal, since when you drive half an hour away, people will speak a total different language. My first language is French, and other languages I know are German, Italian, English and Spanish," he admitted.

Digital transformation of the music business

On the impact of technology on the music business, Baker said, "I have always had a positive attitude towards it. People are buying less records for sure, but more people are listening to music and more people are coming to the shows. I like to live in the present and look at the future in a positive way. It took me a while to get on Spotify, and now I'm addicted to it. Technology is making this easier, and that works for music."

CONCERT REVIEW: Shania Twain still riles up a Canadian crowd

By Jane Stevenson | Toronto Sun | July 7, 2018

Shania Twain

Scotiabank Arena

July 6, 2018

RATING: (***1/2 out of five)

Hey Shania, wasn’t your 2015 Rock This Country tour supposed to be your farewell jaunt?

Lucky for your fans — and you, it turns out — you changed your mind.

Canadian country-crossover superstar Shania Twain brought her Now tour — but not her famous midriff which remained covered the entire two hours as you might expect of a 52-year-old — to the Scotiabank Arena (previously Air Canada Centre) on Friday night for the first of two shows.

And with a dazzling array of flowing costumes — plenty of leopard print, leather, sequins, feathers and chiffon — Twain’s visually ambitious show with a production that included moving cubes that acted as eye-catching video backdrops alongside sexy, often shirtless, male dancers entertained a female-heavy crowd.

“It’s fun to be me!” admitted Twain, after being escorted up a flight of stairs by one of her dancers.

“Getting lifted up like a feather by all these hunky men!”

Packed with plenty of ‘90s hits and new tunes from Now, her 2017 studio album of the same name and her first in 15 years, the concert seemed to as much about survival as empowerment.

After all, Twain is now a middle-aged mother of a teenager and remarried after her superstar producer first husband “Mutt” Lange ended up with her best friend (she married that woman’s ex) and has battled both Lyme Disease and dysphonia (her speaking voice was often hoarse).

For example, “You’re Still The One,” which was previously a song about a lasting relationship with Lange, has now become a song for the fans, as Twain — sitting on an open guitar case swing — flew over the top of the crowd on the floor while she strummed an acoustic guitar, describing it as “the sing-along” moment of the show.

Afterwards, it also found her plucking three “cowboys” (from Ireland, Labrador and Belleville, Ont.) out of the crowd to escort her back to the main stage but when they got there to take selfies and help her up onto a piano for the new song, More Fun, it was mass confusion.

“That was a little difficult to direct,” joked Twain afterwards.

The show was being filmed, so there was plenty of cameras everywhere, too.

Always the flashy performer, Twain began her performance in the midst of the audience in the stands while her amazing trans female drummer Elijah Wood (not the actor) — who also played on the Rock This Country trek as a young man — pounded a drum kit to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” on a smaller b-stage on the floor.

As Twain walked towards the stage in a black sequined cowboy hat and matching evening gown, there was plenty of swagger and confidence and genuine desire to connect with the audience as she opened with the new song, “Life’s About To Get Good.”

“It’s so good to be here,” said the singer who grew up in Timmins, Ont.

“I mean, this is Toronto!”

But it was the older hits, “Come On Over” and “Up!” that got the place rocking and kept fans on their feet followed by other crowd-pleasers like “Don’t Be Stupid, (You Know I Love You)”, “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, “Any Man of Mine”, “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under”, “Honey I’m Home”, “From This Moment On”, and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good.”

Opener and Swiss singer Bastian Baker joined Twain for “Party for Two” towards the end of the night and also played guitar on the new tune, “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed”, but her fans only had eyes for Twain as she closed strong with “(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!” and the encore songs, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “Rock This Country!”

SET LIST:

Life’s About To Get Good

Come On Over

Up!

Poor Me

Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)

That Don’t Impress Me Much

Let’s Kiss and Make Up

Any Man of Mine

Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?

Honey, I’m Home

I’m Alright

Soldier

You’re Still the One

More Fun

From This Moment On

I’m Gonna Getcha Good

Party for Two

Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed

(If You’re Not in It for Love) I’m Outta Here!

ENCORE:

Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

Rock This Country!

Twainiacs rejoice: Shania is back, owning her femininity and rockin’ the hell out of an NHL rink

By Ben Rayner | Toronto Star | July 7, 2018

Shania Twain with Bastian Baker

Scotiabank Arena, Friday, July 6

2 1/2 out of 4 stars

Shania shot a movie once, in my hometown …

Not sure what the ultimate purpose of bringing all those cameras to Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena for the first of Timmins-raised (sorta-)country superstar Shania Twain’s two consecutive Now tour dates in the venue formerly known as the Air Canada Centre on Friday night will be, but the results should look pretty smooth however and whenever her people choose to monetize them.

Twain warned going into last night’s ridiculously high-tech stage show that she might have to pause and recreate the illusion of the first time here and there if there were any flubs in her performance. In the end, though, the only noticeable hiccup in a two-hour show long on brightly lit moving parts and precisely timed technical and choreographical details was a slightly off-mark denouement of “That Don’t Impress Me Much” that presumably didn’t quite jibe with the director’s vision of how exactly Shania should run up a flight of steps onto one of the many glowing, hydraulic cubes whooshing here and there behind her all night long and collapse into the arms of a muscly male dancer to declare “That don’t impress me much” at just the right moment. I wouldn’t have noticed anything amiss if they’d let it slide and skipped the quick do-over that ensued, and the crowd — which roared approvingly at various levels of “deafening” for the duration of the two-hour show — would most definitely have forgiven the error.

So, yes, everything went well for the cameras on Friday night. They’ll probably edit out Twain’s unintentionally racy intro to Now’s jubilant summer jam “Swingin’ With My Eyes Closed,” wherein she meant to say “I’m gonna be doing a lot of fist-pumping during this song” but forgot the “pump” and sent the sentence spinning off in a far more pornographic direction, but it got a hearty round of laughs from the more filthy-minded patrons in the room. And another when Shania — who, bless her heart, appeared completely oblivious to what she’d just said — responded to the audible intake of breath in the rink by repeating herself. Good times.

Twain’s lack of polish in the between-song banter was actually one of the evening’s more endearing elements. There was little room for error in the actual staging, as she and her innumerable dancers and intermittently visible backing musicians frequently risked losing limbs or falling to the their deaths from great heights if they missed a single step, so the fact that her chatter to the crowd remains unrehearsed and slightly clumsy even after a two-year stint in Vegas a few years back kept her human amidst a precision spectacle that could otherwise have been completely robotic.

It was still a bit robotic, mind you. New tunes like the opener “Life’s About to Get Good” — sung with the aid of six backup singers after Lady Twain made her entrance in sparkly gown and sparkly cowboy hat from the 100s and toured the arena on her way to the stage while drummer Elijah Wood (not that one) pounded on a couple of tom toms at the back of the bowl — and “Let’s Kiss and Make Up” and “Party for Two” (performed with help from opener Bastian Baker) are so heavily electronic and reliant on backing tracks that they’ve more or less severed Twain’s already tenuous connections to country music, and they’re not as easy a fit for her charms as old-school “everygal” anthems like “Any Man of Mine,” “Don’t Be Stupid,” “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” and “(If You’re Not In It for Love) I’m Outta Here!” (Although, that said, it was kinda cool to hear Shania copping some sonic flourishes from gloomy Brit electro-popsters the xx on new number “Poor Me.”

Those rousing monster hits, as well as the goopy ballads “You’re Still the One” — during which Twain strummed a guitar that may or may not have been plugged in while suspended from a harness over the arena floor — and “From This Moment On,” were what the crowd came to hear, of course, and resulted in unendingly boisterous singalongs from the many, many, many ladies in the house. Probably not least because there was a moment a few years ago when Twain, stricken with heartbreak after a messy split with her husband, producer and co-writer Robert John “Mutt” Lange and faced with the very real possibility that she might never sing again due to complications from Lyme disease, looked like she might be gone for good from the touring trail. The Shania faithful are clearly very grateful to have their girl back and touring her first album of new material in 15 years. Her Rock This Country tour in 2015 was supposed to be her “farewell,” let’s not forget.

And you know what? It is somewhat comforting to have Shania Twain back. Her music’s never really been my cup of tea, but she’s got some indisputably perfect pop tunes in her canon and, moreover, they’re not really meant to be my cup of tea. I’m a 40-ish male; Shania’s tunes are not aimed at me, but at the thousands of women gettin’ down with their gal pals in the cheap seats and anxiously awaiting that moment in the encore when she finally uncorks “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”

“This is all about what a woman wants.”

So went Twain’s mid-set introduction to “Honey, I’m Home” — a switch-flippin’ single from 1997’s ultra-mega-super-hit album Come On Over wherein the Timmins-raised (sorta-)country superstar demands a foot rub, a cold one, a hot meal and some peace and quiet in front of the TV after comin’ home at the end of a hard day — on Friday night. The room veritably exploded and “ping” went whatever needed to go “ping” in this male music writer and longtime Shania doubter’s head to finally get Shania Twain.

Of course it exploded. Here was a 52-year-old mom totally owning her femininity and rockin’ the hell out of an NHL rink. What a nice change of pace it must be for the tens of thousands of women taking in the Now tour not to sit through another arena show where all they hear are songs about what men want and how it feels to be a man. We could all do with more of that. So, Ms. Twain, long may you run.

Comic concert review: Shania Twain delivers big kitsch on a big budget

The country-pop superstar's return to Toronto gets illustrated in all its glitzy, folksy glory

By Eric Kostiuk Williams | NOW Magazine - Toronto | July 10, 2018

Shania Twain has said farewell before, but the Canadian country-pop superstar was back in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena for a pair of concerts on July 6 and 7 as part of her Now Tour. Naturally, we had to be there. And there was only one person who could capture the strange mix of Vegas glitz and folksy charm in all its kitschy, corny glory: NOW's comic concert reviewer Eric Kostiuk Williams

Singer Bastian Baker is at home in sports venues like PPG Paints Arena

By JoAnne Klimovich Harrop | Pittsburgh Tribune-Review | July 10, 2018

It's fitting that Bastian Baker will be the opening act for Shania Twain in an arena that's home to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

He was a former professional hockey player who left skating on an ice rink for singing on a stage.

In addition to starting the show, he will perform two duets with Twain in her Shania Now World Tour at 7:30 p.m. on July 17 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh's Uptown. The 48-show tour kicked off in Tacoma, Wash., on May 3 and wraps Aug. 4 in Las Vegas.

“It is so much fun touring with Shania,” says Baker, who is in Nashville, Tenn., working on his next album. “I go out there first and do the guitar warm up with the audience, and then I come back later and do a duet with her.”

How they met

Twain and Baker met six years ago in Switzerland — where he was born and raised— at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Baker was invited to be part of the festival when one of the hosts spotted him in a bar and liked what he heard, asking Baker to play more that time and then inviting him to be part of the festival.

“It's sometimes about being in the right place at the right time,” Baker says. “That night in the bar, I was about finished with my set, but when asked if I could play more songs, I said ‘no problem.'

“Life is about staying positive and never giving up. I never thought I would be touring with Shania, but here I am,” he says.

No more hockey

Baker has given up hockey to play music. But that hasn't stopped his love of the sport. Being able to perform in ice arenas is special, he says, and it continues his connection to the game he's played since he was a child, like many members of his family.

“Going from hockey to music was a crazy move, but what is cool is we have been performing in some hockey arenas,” Baker says. “And to be in the same arena where (Pittsburgh Penguins star) Sidney Crosby plays is pretty amazing. Music has taken me to so many places.”

No particular genre

Baker says he doesn't focus on one genre when writing or selecting music to sing and play because he wants his sound to cross generations – from grandparents to grandchildren.

“I want everyone from the youngest to the oldest to enjoy my songs,” says Baker, who speaks five languages. “Music is about bringing people together. This is the best job in the world. We put smiles on peoples' faces, and I have a good time doing that. I feel the love and energy in these arenas, and every night we get to experience that.”

He says he often takes photos in the venues where he dreamed of playing hockey and plans to definitely capture the moment in Pittsburgh.

“I have gotten so much positive exposure touring with Shania,” Baker says. “She believes in me, and her fans are awesome. The fans' reactions have been so positive. We have great chemistry on stage.”

Local teen battling brain cancer gets VIP experience at Shania Twain concert

FOX 29 - Philadelphia | July 12, 2018

PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) - She's one of Shania Twain's biggest fans. Brianna Disney is fighting brain cancer and she has just one message for the country superstar: "I love you and I always wanted to meet you." On Thursday, she saw her idol in concert and got the VIP experience.

FOX 29'S Chris O'Connell has the story.

"This is the first time she’s had a breath of fresh air since May 21st." Brianna Disney left her hospital room at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children for the first time in weeks. After all, she had to cash in her Christmas gifttickets to Shania Twain. Her parents, her doctor and her medical team all helped make the trip to the Wells Fargo Center.

After hearing Brianna’s story, concert promoter Live Nation gave her the royal treatment. She got tickets to a VIP party, a shopping spree at the merchandise table and a handwritten letter from her idol. Shania even yelled out Brianna's name during the third song at the concert.

"I think that’s just a testament of how wonderful of an artist she is and person she is. And everyone was in her corner," Joe McCollum with Live Nation said.

It's her music that helps Brianna through the grueling rehab. It was getting to this concert that gave her the motivation.

"Even when she was exhausted and tired she would just put on the musicstand up and go at it," Dr. Eileen Shieh said.

It was a whirlwind night that almost never happened.

"A week ago, I thought there was no way this is going to happen at all and here she is," her mom, Aimee Disney, said.

The memories of these few hours will be forever.

Shania Twain is still a rock star at the Wells Fargo Center

By Dan Weiss | Philadelphia Inquirer | July 13, 2018

Shania Twain isn’t in the midst of a comeback in the career sense; releasing just three albums in the last 20 years doesn’t really get an all-time best-selling pop star to the saturation point where public image falls off. But she’s spent more than half of that time rebounding from personal turmoil — having her voice ravaged by Lyme disease and divorcing her ultimate collaborator and husband, mega-producer “Mutt” Lange, following his extramarital affair.

Her purely professional onstage revue, which recently held down a Vegas residency, would never tell you any of this, though her song choices from 2017’s Now made clear the album’s is her darkest, despite the cheerful insistence of its first single (and her set opener) “Life’s About to Get Good”. And she did address the long road back to normalcy briefly from the stage, referring to her ups and downs, particularly the “downs,” addressed on her new album as therapeutic. But despite the charms of “Poor Me” (which she flips into “pour me another”) and the unperformed Stevie Nicks pastiche “Who’s Gonna Be Your Girl,” the real catharsis at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday was seeing her fly.

That’s right; the lure of expensive extravaganzas like only a few legitimate pop deities can afford these days culminates with musicians on moving, miniature wire-suspended stages: a drummer ascending to the ceiling for “If You’re Not In It for Love (I’m Outta Here!),” the highest-altitude accordionist ever witnessed on the zydeco-tinged “Come on Over.” And Twain herself rode a zip line over the audience for a sequence where the maudlin, soundtrack-only “Solider” turned into her biggest hit, “You’re Still the One,” performed by the singer in zero-gravity, acoustic guitar in hand, over the very center of the arena as cell phones lit up the entire bowl of a venue. Walking on air was the country superstar’s specialty last night, and her voice sounded tip-top, too. “You guys are so cute from down here!” she gushed to the faithful.

The corn of Vegas still loomed over some sections that reminded us Twain isn’t as plugged in to 2018 as say, Beyoncé. A random tribute to her own early videos (nearly all of which had her riding a horse or frolicking on a beach) was strange, and a lip-service montage to the troops felt out-of-touch for a Canadian who’s hinted (and quickly walked back) that she doesn’t necessarily hate Trump’s populism. And she declined to play Now’s best songs – the thunderous “Roll Me on the River” would’ve slayed, or the punchy “Home Now.”

But she’s still a rock star, entering through the crowd(!) to the strains of Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” then thrashing out quite a bit on perfected power-pop-with-fiddle hybrids like Come on Over’s classic “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You),” which was matched with Riverdance-esque choreography. She pulled up a couple of planted-seeming fans for selfies. In one spectacular sequence, she reminded us of her honky-took roots from “Let’s Kiss and Make Up” to the barn-burning “Any Man of Mine.” And while the execrable low point proved that “From This Moment On” remains unlistenable even with the benefit of shiny outfits and laser lights, the encore reinforced that her “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the deathless, triumphant “Man!! I Feel Like a Woman,” and that it’s bashed out even better when the drummer is more than 50 feet above the stage.

Irishman gets on stage to meet Shania Twain and he instantly starts flirting with her... and she does too

"Shania, you're a doll!" This is such a great moment.

By Paul Moore | JOE.ie | July 14, 2018

https://img.maximummedia.ie/joe_ie/eyJkYXRhIjoie1widXJsXCI6XCJodHRwOlxcXC9cXFwvbWVkaWEtam9lLm1heGltdW1tZWRpYS5pZS5zMy5hbWF6b25hd3MuY29tXFxcL3dwLWNvbnRlbnRcXFwvdXBsb2Fkc1xcXC8yMDE4XFxcLzA3XFxcLzE0MTg1NjIzXFxcL1NoYW5pYUZhbi5wbmdcIixcIndpZHRoXCI6NjQwLFwiaGVpZ2h0XCI6MzYwLFwiZGVmYXVsdFwiOlwiaHR0cHM6XFxcL1xcXC93d3cuam9lLmllXFxcL2Fzc2V0c1xcXC9pbWFnZXNcXFwvam9lXFxcL25vLWltYWdlLnBuZz92PTVcIn0iLCJoYXNoIjoiMWUwYjQ0MDVhYzRiZTczYzQ5NmViODAwMTc3NmEyODBhZTYyZGI5OSJ9/shaniafan.png

As Shania Twain has openly admitted, it takes a lot to impress the Canadian singer.

After all, she has known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart but this fella from Antrim has got being right down to an art. Other fellas might think they're a genius but they drive Shania up the wall.

Oh-oo-oh, they think they're special
Oh-oo-oh, they think they're something else
Okay, so they're a rocket scientist
That don't impress Shania much.

Ok, we'll stop but JOE reader Colm Byrne has sent us in this footage of his mate at Twain's recent gig in Philadelphia and it's clear that she was impressed by Christopher McSteen's stage presence, t-shirt and vocals.

We especially love the moment when the singer tells Christopher that "You look like you belong on stage?" He immediately replies by saying: "That's because I'm Irish!" before cheekily stating that he's single.

As for his version of You're Still the One?, well, you can decide if he has a career as a singer.

After Christopher is just about to leave the stage, it's clear that the singer is still up for a bit of craic with the man from Crumlin, Antrim as she gets him to kneel at the piano before giving him a warm embrace.

Fair play to the both of them. Take a look because this is great.

Can we show some love for my amazing dancer and backing vocalist Re'Sean Pates' cover of 'Forever and For Always'! Beautiful. See him (and me 😂) tonight in Duluth/Atlanta. #ShaniaNOW

Re'Sean went live on Instagram today during the soundcheck in Washington, D.C.. A fan asked him if he would sing "Forever And For Always" with Shania. Re'Sean said he and Shania will be singing it during the European leg of the tour. So it sounds like the setlist will be a little different than it has been in the U.S. and Canada.

I just saw Shania in DC tonight. I’m speechless. The show was incredible!
Also, super excited to hear she’ll be performing FAFA in Europe. She should really perform Ka-Ching in Europe as well. Probably one of her biggest hits across Europe

Well, I wonder what songs she then replaces with FAFA and/or other European hits. If it is "Let's Kiss Abd Make Up" and "More Fun", I won't cry. But if she replaces "From This Moment On" or some other big hit of hers, then that's not a good idea.

I also hope she will perform "Ka-Ching!" in Europe. "Ka-Ching!" was in Germany Shania's most successful single
