Pitch Perfect: The Best Ceremonial First Pitches in MLB History (VIDEO)

If the most important MLB pre-game tradition is the shouting of "Play ball!" then the most exciting one is the ceremonial first pitch.

Sometimes the honored throwers are former players returning to their old stadiums. Sometimes they're touring celebrities or visiting dignitaries, and sometimes they're Average Joes with friends in high places.

The most memorable first pitches are the bad ones, from Barack Obama's supposedly feminine delivery to Shania Twain's pathetic little roller.

But on some rare occasions, the first pitches are actually pretty good.

Here is my list of the 10 best first pitches in baseball history, ranked on an Olympic scale of 0-10 based on accuracy and velocity, style, and other intangible qualities.

On today's "Oprah Winfrey Show."

First Jobs: Oprah Describes hers and other Celebs

How did it all start for the amazingly talented and successful, now talk show host, Oprah Winfrey? Oprah tells all that she will never forget her first job. Who usually does? Oprah then shares the first jobs of celebrities Kirstie Alley, Suze Orman, Shania Twain, Madonna, Jay Leno and Martina McBride.

Oprah Winfrey grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, and as a teenager her first job was working at the corner grocery store next to her father's barber shop. She remembers hating every minute of the experience. Haven't we all had jobs like that? Oprah shared, "I wasn't allowed to talk to the customers, and can you imagine for me? That was very, very, very hard."

When Oprah was 16, she was hired for a job that actually paid her to do what she loved most; talk. WVOL, a Nashville radio station, hired Oprah to read the news on the air. This was a dream job for Oprah who shared how much she loved it. This opportunity helped Oprah get her big break when she was 19 years old (in 1973) working for Channel 5's Chris Clark. This is when the well-spoken and poised Oprah went in for an interview and although she may have fabricated the truth about her experience with on-air news, this didn't prevent her from landing the job. Oprah shared that the first time she was on television, it felt like the most natural thing in the world. She stated, "It just felt like breathing. It felt like this is where I'm supposed to be."

While filming a live Oprah show in Dallas, Texas, at the annual state fair, Oprah conducted her first live newscast. She shared, "I thought, 'Well, as long as I'm stopping by our affiliate, WFAA, in Dallas, why not see if they'll let me take my old job back for just a moment?'" she says. "So I gave it a shot." She admitted being nervous, but eventually said, "It feels rather natural," she says. "Kind of like riding a bike after a long time."

Kristie Alley, who became known in her breakout role in the television series, "Cheers," began working when she was 16 years old as a housekeeper in Wichita, Kansas. A childhood friend's mother, Anne Kathol, hired Kirstie to clean their house and taught her lessons she would never forget. Kristie shared, "Mrs. Kathol said, 'Put your back into it. You got to put a little pressure. It's not going to clean itself. She made me feel very validated. ... And she gave me the work ethic." And now, to this day, Kirstie says she can still make a sink sparkle.

Suze Orman, one of the most influential money experts in America, began her working career in the food service industry. From 1973 to 1980, Suze was a short-order cook and waitress at the Buttercup Bakery in Berkeley, California. She shared that she loved being the first person many customers saw every morning. "They couldn't wait to come in, see the regulars, have their cup of coffee, say hi to me, sit down. It was like a family. I felt like I belonged somewhere back then."

Shania Twain, Madonna and Jay Leno worked behind the counters at fast food restaurants as their first jobs.

Country star, Martina McBride worked in a Dairy Queen in Hutchinson, Kansas. She shared, "I moved there to go to school, to sing in a band, and I had to pay my own bills. I wanted to make my own way." She also shared a very important lesson that all people should learn, "I think that I carry with me from this job just a way to treat people. I know that when I go in a restaurant, I completely empathize with the person working behind the counter," she says. "I think just having that experience really gives you a great perspective."

But tucked away in a corner of the Amarillo National Center, the Coors Cowboy Band could be seen belting out "Old River Valley."

For 22 years, the band has provided all the musical entertainment at the annual Coors Cowboy Club Ranch Rodeo.

While the musicians and cowboys and cowgirls vary from year to year, the band provides a steady note.

Sunday

8 a.m.-noon: Practice with the Pros, Bill Cody Arena

When riders race out of the gate to compete, the six band members play a fast-paced tune. As teams gallop around the arena mounted on horses, the band accompanies them with an upbeat tune.
Barely a moment goes by at the rodeo that there's not a song playing in the background.

"(We) add music and flavor of the Old West," said lead singer Ed Montana of Amarillo.

By the end of each rodeo, the band will have performed about 50 songs. In addition to Friday night's competition, they are slated to play at today's second performance scheduled for 2 p.m. and the third performance planned for 7 p.m. When all is said and done, they'll have played about 12 hours of music.

The music is a mixture of slow country, western swing, bluegrass and anything else that fits the western genre. Western swing is one of the oldest forms of music in the country, band members said.

This year, six jean-wearing, cowboy-hat-fitted men from all walks of life grace the stage.

There's Montana, singing and playing guitar. He's been playing at the event for 22 years. He's the voice of the group and selects the members.

"You can tell the way we're dressed we don't do much Lady Gaga or Shania Twain," he joked.

Then there's Jimmy Young, who back in the day played with the legendary Bob Wills. He's been playing the fiddle professionally for 64 years. He started back in 1946.

"You've got to depend on your ear completely," he said.

As he opens up on his fiddle for a duet with Glen Spiller, of Claude, the two exchange huge grins.

Spiller is the group's second fiddler. He's been playing with the group for several years.

"It's just like going home to me," Spiller said. "I know a lot of the ranchers and their families. It's getting to the point where I can't rodeo anymore so I get to play the fiddle."

One woman sitting in the audience flashes a "#1 Spiller fan" sign to laughter.

Standing near Spiller is Richard Coborn playing an electric guitar.

The group doesn't practice before the ranch rodeo so it's a matter of finding the rhythm and blending in.

"You feel it," he said. "It's hard to describe. You just feel it. It's fun. It's preserving a way of life. This is America."

No one uses written music. Instead they rely on Montana's seemingly endless supply of music.

"He's got them all in his head," said Charlie Cox. He's sitting behind Montana tapping away on a drum set. He just had foot surgery Tuesday, but decided to come anyway.

"He just starts it, and we all join in," he said.

Standing to the far side of the stage is the group's newest member, Lee Barlow, of Canyon. He's been playing the bass for 40 years, but it's the first time he's performed during the rodeo's events.

"I love this type of music," he said. "This is a release from the stress. This is my workout."

LA Times Visits Hannibal Twice, Says "Twainiacs" Will Soon Be Converging In Force

Before kicking the bucket in 1910, Missouri's own literary sage Mark Twain expressed the wish that his autobiography not be be published for 100 years hence.

Now the time has come, and it's due out in November. Which means ramped up tourism for Hannibal this summer, spurred along by the travel sections of East and West Coast newspapers that are powerless to resist a good centennial.

The LA Times for example, has run two different stories on Hannibal this month. (One came out a couple weeks ago in their special summer travel issue, and another ran yesterday).

For Missourians who've long since visited Twain's boyhood home, there's not much to learn in these articles, except perhaps the term "Twainiacs," which refers to rabid devotees of the great man of letters, and not, as urbandictionary.com suggests, fans of Shania Twain. Although there might be some overlap there.

Charice Goes Country

Pop sensation Charice knows a good song when she hears it and for this week's Mashup Monday,  the 18-year-old Filipina goes Country with a heartfelt vocals-and-acoustic-guitar cover of Shania Twain's 1997 song "You're Still The One."

Charice Feature

"That song reminds me of my mom. [She] used to be a vocalist in a band and they were always singing that song," Charice says of why she chose to cover the Country star's hit, which was released when Charice was only five years old. "I love the way Shania sang it and recorded it. It's just really amazing."

Both women have spent quality time on the Billboard charts. Twain's "You're Still The One" rose all the way to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and the album on which it appears, "Come On Over," managed the same feat on the Country Albums chart. Even though she's still in her teens, Charice has already managed to nab a No. 1 "Hot Dance Club Play" song -- "Pyramid," which features Iyaz -- and her self-titled 2010 album reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's Anniversary Love-Fest

Tuesday June 29, 2010 04:05 PM EDT

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman have been in a celebratory mood lately.

Last week, the couple shared a romantic dinner at the Nashville restaurant Flyte where they celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary. Over dinner the lovebirds got cozy in an intimate corner of the restaurant – which is a Nashville favorite frequented by stars such as Shania Twain, Gwyneth Paltrow and Taylor Swift.

"[Nicole] looked stunning, very understated in a sleeveless dress and sandals," says one observer. "They were smiling and holding hands across the table. You could tell they were so in love."

PHOTOS: Sunday Rose: Nic & Keith's Country Cutie!

After their meal, the twosome chatted with restaurant staff, who described the couple as "a delight."

And that wasn't the only night for partying: On June 20, they had a joint celebration for Kidman's 43rd birthday and Father's Day. Another birthday cake is in store for the family when Sunday Rose turns 2 on July 7.

Music’s slowest stars: Monsters of rock, pop and R&B keep us impatiently waiting

Although I excelled in math in school, it was never my favorite subject. Nonetheless, yesterday, just for fun, I decided to do some light calculating. If the Beatles released six landmark albums between the December 1965 and May 1970 — and they did, with Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album and Abbey Road among the band’s nine productions – that averages to roughly one classic every nine months.

Recording artists were so much more prolific back then. In their peak years, many of them stayed on the charts pretty much constantly by continuously producing new music. Even in the 1970s, a band like Fleetwood Mac produced three great albums — Fleetwood Mac, Rumors and Tusk (my personal favorite) in a four-year span, 1975 to 1979. And in the ’80s and early ’90s, Prince churned out new music on a yearly basis, battling his label, Warner Bros. Records,  for the right to bombard the public with an annual Prince album.

In comparison, aside from Lady Gaga and Rihanna, who seemingly have not been without a hit single in circulation since their debuts, today, music stars are a pretty slow bunch. For most A-list acts, three to four years between albums is the norm, the gold-and-platinum standard.

Take Red Hot Chili Peppers, who, for some reason, popped into my head yesterday. The band’s most recent album, Stadium Aracadium, came out in May of 2006. A new album is coming in 2011 (with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer replacing the departed John Frusciante), according to Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, which would make the time span between releases half a decade. There are a number of reasons for today’s decreased emphasis on recording: more time spent on the road (the Chili Peppers themselves cited touring burnout before going on hiatus), the longer shelf life of albums that produce multiple hit singles, and decreased income from album sales in today’s financially struggling music industry.

For some slow-poke superstars, there’s the seniority factor. The likes of Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin have earned the right to take extended breaks, and let’s face it, their best work is at least three decades behind them anyway. But for me, it’s always a head-scratcher when an act in its creative and commercial prime like the Chili Peppers, for whom Stadium Arcadium was the band’s first No. 1 album, drops out. Here are nine acts other than the Chili Peppers and Amy Winehouse (on whom I’ve already put a rush) that have me praying for a swift, safe return.

The White Stripes In the three years since Icky Thump, Meg and Jack White both have suffered medical setbacks, but Jack has said that new music is in the works. Next time they take an extended leave of absence, Jack should work his production magic with another golden oldie from country music, as he did with Loretta Lynn on her 2004 Grammy winner Van Lear Rose. Just imagine what he could cook up with Dolly Parton or George Jones.

Justin Timberlake It almost feels like he never went away, since he’s been featured on nearly a dozen singles (including hits with Madonna, Ciara and Timbaland), since his last album, Future Sex/Love Sounds, was released in 2006. And he will appear on the forthcoming Sheryl Crow album, 100 Miles from Memphis, which comes out next Tuesday. But if nothing else, I’m curious to see how a new Timberlake set would fare in today’s musical climate.

Kate Bush After releasing five albums between 1978 and 1985, Bush began to take her cool, sweet time. Her last release, 2005’s Aerial, was 12 years coming. At that rate, she should return with her next effort sometime around her 60th birthday.

Enya Yesterday during my Pilates class, my instructor was playing Enya’s Shepherd Moons in the background, which reminded me that it’s been seven years since her last studio album, Amarantine. And no, Christmas albums (2008’s And Winter Came…), which I hate in theory, don’t count.

Sting Are you reading this, Sting? Last year’s If on a Winter’s Night… didn’t cut it. (And what’s with the ellipses?) For Sting’s pop and rock fans waiting for a proper follow-up to 2003’s Sacred Love, neither did 2006’s Songs from the Labyrinth, judging from its commercial reception. It’s Sting’s only solo album not to go gold in the U.S. or in the UK.

Shania Twain It’s been eight years since Up!, and during that time, Twain became a mother and a divorcee. She deserves a break. But couldn’t she skip Why Not? With Shania Twain, the reality show due to debut in 2011 on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, and give us some new music instead?

Missy Elliott Remember when Elliott used to give us at least one hot jam a year. There hasn’t been a new album since 2005’s The Cookbook, and Block Party, its follow-up, has been in the works for years. She earned some time off after delivering six platinum albums in eight years, but in the rapidly changing game of hip hop, it might cost her. Five years on the sidelines may not have diminished Eminem’s star and sales power — half a decaded separated 2004’s Encore and last year’s Relapse — but Elliott will have to deliver “Work It”-caliber musical goods to strike platinum again.

David Bowie and Joni Mitchell Both are firmly in the category of legends with the right to go gently into that good night. But considering that both Bowie and Mitchell were on creative rolls as of their last albums — 2003’s Heathen and 2007’s Shine, respectively — and Mitchell has threatened retirement before, I’m hoping for a final encore before they hang up their microphones for good.

Seeing Stars - The Thrill of Skydiving Attracts Famous Faces

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.
, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- On screen and off, celebrities are taking flight, but not in any private jet. Instead, Shania Twain, Hilary Swank and Chuck Norris are just a few of the celebrities who are going up—and jumping out.

According to the United States Parachute Association (USPA), NASCAR driver Brian Vickers and country music star Craig Morgan are the most recent celebrities to complete student training and earn skydiving licenses.

Even ex-President George H.W. Bush celebrated his 85th birthday in June 2009 by making a historic tandem jump—his sixth skydive since leaving the presidency.

Other famous faces to trade their tuxes and gowns for jumpsuits include actors Drew Barrymore, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Nicole Kidman, Sean Penn, Keanu Reeves, Wesley Snipes, Orlando Bloom, Bill Murray, Harry Hamlin, Amber Tamlin, Jennifer Garner and "90210" star Trevor Donovan (watch video of his jump); sports stars Tony Hawk and Andy Roddick; NASCAR driver Tony Stewart; supermodels Giselle Bunchen, Petra Nemcova and Alessandra Ambrosio; and TV's Rachael Ray.

One of skydiving's most famous fans was Patrick Swayze. His aerial adventures with Keanu Reaves in the 1991 movie "Point Break" brought flocks of first-time skydivers to drop zones nationwide.

So why the celebrity popularity in this adrenaline-pumping sport?

"Celebrities make their first jumps for different reasons—the thrill, life affirmation, escape," says Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld, a world champion skydiver and coach. "But they continue because they get turned on to flying."

USPA reports that about 400,000 first-timers, along with USPA's 32,000-plus members, made nearly 3 million jumps in 2009. Skydiving is a life-changing sport, and after just one jump, it's easy to get hooked.

A skydiving center outside of L.A. is where big studios often turn to film high-flying scenes. "The Bucket List," featuring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, was just one of many movies filmed there. Since that movie's release in 2007, thousands of people have added skydiving to their own bucket lists.

"The past few years have been big for us," says Scott Smith, stuntman and the drop zone's manager. "We've worked on 'Ironman,' 'The Jane Austen Book Club,' 'CSI,' 'America's Next Top Model,' cable shows and countless commercials."

Bear Grylls, seasoned adventurer and host of Discovery Channel's hit show "Man vs. Wild," perhaps put it best when he explained why he skydives: "It's all about that moment where you leave the plane or helicopter ... It's a moment of pure exhilaration, freefalling at 120 mph, being on top of the world ... How lucky we are to be able to live like that!"

The public is invited to see hundreds of skydiving superstars in action September 10-24 at the 2010 USPA National Skydiving Championships at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois. The championships are free and open to the public.

To find a skydiving center near you, visit USPA's Drop Zone Directory at http://www.uspa.org/FindaDZ/GroupMemberListbyState.aspx, or call 1-800-371-USPA.

Discovering the Real Names of Country Stars
From Patsy Cline to Shania Twain, Stage Names Remain Popular

Shania Twain
Shania Twain

The names of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams are etched into country music history. However, that's not their real names. Instead, Cline was born with the name Virginia Patterson Hensley. And despite the countless references to "Hank" in country music lyrics, his actual name is Hiram King Williams.

From the early days of country music to the present era, country stars have reinvented their image with new, catchy names. Kitty Wells, who entered the country charts in 1952 with the landmark "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," is often considered the Queen of Country Music. It's probably an easier name to remember than her real one, Ellen Muriel Deason. Also, Roy Rogers brings to mind a friendly cowboy image. What if he had used his real name, Leonard Franklin Slye? Hmmm.

In the 1950s, a TV producer in Georgia met a talented teen named Brenda Mae Tarpley. He believed that her name was too hard to remember, so he shortened it to Brenda Lee. Also known as Little Miss Dynamite, she's currently the only woman to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The 1970s hosted a number of still-famous names in country music. Conway Twitty borrowed his first and last names from Conway, Ark., and Twitty, Texas. Before that, he was known as Harold Lloyd Jenkins. Still identified with the "Rocky Mountain High" of Colorado, John Denver wisely dropped his real name -- John Henry Deutschendorf. Johnny Paycheck once signed his name as Donald Eugene Lytle. Donna Fargo dropped Yvonne Vaughn, then became known as "The Happiest Girl in the U.S.A." When Virginia Wynette Pugh famously strolled into producer Billy Sherrill's office, she probably didn't know she was about to become Tammy Wynette. And Crystal Gayle changed her name from Brenda Gail Webb on the advice of her older sister, Loretta Lynn, noting that Brenda liked that Southern staple, Krystal hamburgers.

One of the biggest country stars of the 1980s kept his real first name but slightly adjusted his surname, transforming from Randy Traywick to Randy Travis. Back then, he shared the country charts with the intriguing mother-daughter duo, Diana and Christina Ciminella, a.k.a., the Judds. Naomi Judd smartly retrieved her maiden name for the famous moniker, while Wynonna eventually dropped it altogether.

Speaking of famous couples, how about Samuel Smith and Audrey Perry? Oh, you might know them by their middle names -- Timothy and Faith. See, Tim McGraw adopted his last name when he found out his real father was Tug McGraw, while Faith Hill kept her last name from her first marriage before she became a superstar.

Dropping the first name and using the middle name is a common practice in country music. There's Troyal Garth Brooks, Valerie June Carter, Morna Anne Murray, Margaret LeAnn Rimes, Ernest Clay Walker and Jessie Keith Whitley, to name a few. Meanwhile, some artists chop their last names, like Gary Allan Herzberg, Toby Keith Covel and Jimmy Wayne Barber. Or if you're exceptionally confident, you swap out your old name with the French term for "The Voice," thus evolving from Gary Wayne Vernon Jr. to Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts.

Finally, do you know the artist with the best-selling country album in history? That would be Eileen Regina Edwards. When her mother married a man in the Ojibwa Indian tribe, Eileen took his last name. To honor him, she also changed her first name to the Ojibwa word for "on my way." Indeed she was. The world knows her now as Shania Twain.

It revealed that Shania Twain would travel with a sniffer dog in case of bombs. Jennifer Lopez liked her dressing room to be all white, including carpets flowers and furniture. Cher would have high-security rooms for her wigs. Janet Jackson would have a full medical team on standby, including a doctor, nurse and throat specialist. And Britney Spears would demand her favorite Gummie Bear candies.

2007, John Lennon’s “granny” sunglasses were snapped up by a British collector at auction. The sunglasses, from one of the last Beatles concerts, were expected to fetch around £1m, but auction bosses refused to say what the actual figure was. Lennon gave the gold-rimmed glasses to his Japanese interpreter in Tokyo in 1966, and the translator removed the lenses when Lennon died.

Democrats hope Obama 49th birthday events spark funds, turnout for candidates

.....The last president to turn 49 in office was Bill Clinton, in 1995. But he celebrated that August by vacationing with his wife in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Clinton gorged on golf, playing 109 holes during six days in the mountain resort town, according to a Washington Post report. The morning of the president's birthday, Hillary Rodham Clinton ordered him to the golf course again. This time, when he arrived at the Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club, golfing legend Johnny Miller was waiting for him. It was all a surprise cooked up by the first lady.

Clinton's 50th birthday, however, fell in an election year. So he rang in the big 5-0 as any campaigning politician would: with a glitzy fundraiser. The Clintons planned an elaborate birthday tribute at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Produced by Jeff Margolis, a veteran behind both the Academy Awards show and "Miss America," the fundraiser was, as The Post reported, "a star-infested gala" and "a bash of a lifetime" -- complete with Whoopi Goldberg as host and Rosie O'Donnell and Tim Conway performing comedy routines.

Celebrities were all around: Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen, Nathan Lane, Maya Angelou, Leslie Nielsen. And musical guests performed representing the five decades of Clinton's life: Tony Bennett representing the '40s; Jon Bon Jovi, the '50s; Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson, the '60s; Carly Simon, the '70s; Kenny Rogers and Jennifer Holliday, the '80s; and Shania Twain, the '90s. Documentary footage of Clinton's travels through the decades, narrated by James Earl Jones, interspersed the live acts.

The event was fed live on big screens in nearly 100 cities across the country. The celebration -- which began with a ****tail reception for 2,000 at the Sheraton New York Hotel, continued with the show for 5,100 at Radio City, followed by dinner for 700 at the Waldorf Astoria -- raked in $10 million for the DNC.

Shania Twain, Lonestar Crash a Lot of Weddings

Posted: August 4th, 2010 at 9:48 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

Shania Twain

Hello? How on earth can a wedding song be predictable and overplayed when you are only supposed to have one wedding in your life? That makes no sense. Although I guess if you go to a lot of weddings, you tend to hear some songs over and over and over again. That's why Time magazine went ahead and compiled this list of what they call predictable reception tunes. And on it, there are two country songs that I love and if I was going to get married all over again, I'd cut out all the timeless classical crap and make these my first-dance tunes. One is Lonestar's "Amazed." Who doesn't want to hear "I'm so in love with you/It just keeps getting better/I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side"? Then there's Shania Twain's "From This Moment On." The chorus alone is perfect for newlyweds. "From this moment I have been blessed/I live only for your happiness." Call it predictable, but that is textbook wedding sentiment right there.

"New" Mutt Lange Interview talking about Shania

Mutt Lange Exclusive Interview at MuttLange.com

ML Question - Will you ever make a new music album with Shania Twain?
Mutt Lange - Not likely. That chapter in my life is probably permanently closed. We have no goals left to achieve. We were fortuitous beyond our dreams.

ML Question - How did you know Shania Twain would become such a phenomenal musical artist?
Mutt Lange - I knew she had the potential and talent, but not the right sound. Of course, I never thought it would work to the degree it actually did.

ML Question - Are you recognized by people when you go out in public?
Mutt Lange - Not really. It's rare. Even when I was with Shania, nobody really knew who I was. How many record producers, movie executives or book editors do you know by name?

ML Question - None. Excellent point. Are you shocked that the Back In Black album from AC DC, which you helped create, continues to sell over 1 (one) million copies each year?
Mutt Lange - I don't know why, but it's not something I think about.

ML Question - Why does Angus Young of AC/DC keep the basic sound they had in the early 1980's? They don't change.
Mutt Lange - Angus has a certain vision for his music, which works for him.

ML Question - How do you write enchanting melodic hooks for songs that fans will actually pay money to buy?
Mutt Lange - There's no secret. It's difficult to create music that people will listen to over and over again. If I knew what it was all about, every song I produce would be a hit single.

ML Question - Do you still have contact with music artists you worked with in the past?
Mutt Lange - No. We have separate lives. Some of them believe I was a merciless tyrant in the studio and obsessed with absolute perfection with each song. Some of those albums took several years to complete. They've seen enough of me for one life time.

ML Question - Fortunately, you continue to become more and more ancient yet you seem to be able to keep your finger on the pulse of the latest music trends. How do you do it?
Mutt Lange - I listen to a wide variety of music. Basically, every genre is in my collection. However, sometimes when you're lucky in life you can make the trends happen. It's always by accident and chance, but it happens.

ML Question - What's the biggest surprise in life so far?
Mutt Lange - When your searching for the fortune and fame, you need to avoid notoriety. There's no upside in being well known. You need to always be under the radar like a hidden shadow. I learned this early in my career.

ML Question - Will you ever retire from the entertainment industry?
Mutt Lange - As long as somebody has an interest in working with me and I think their sound is something I can work with, then I don't see retirement in my future.

ML Question - What's the biggest disappointment you've had in life?
Mutt Lange - The failure of my marriage with Shania.

ML Question - Will you get married again?
Mutt Lange - I'm getting too old for constant turmoil. I don't think it will take place soon, but you can't say for certain what's really going to happen.

ML Question - What's your greatest blessing?
Mutt Lange - My son.

ML Question - Do you expect the music records you produce to be massive best sellers?
Mutt Lange - No. I can tell you that most of the time your best material doesn't work with the audience. For every Come On Over or Hysteria, you have a dozen records nobody will buy. You can't explain this reality.

ML Question - Why are you so reclusive?
Mutt Lange - I've always been a private person. I don't value being in the media spotlight. I'm fortunate to be able to avoid it.

ML Question - Has music changed greatly since you started back in the 1970's?
Mutt Lange - It evolves in unpredictable ways. Some music is timeless, but some things that worked 20 or 30 years ago wouldn't interest young listeners today.

ML Question - Do websites like MuttLange.com matter to you?
Mutt Lange - I don't see the point in obsessing about my life. It's not that big of a deal. There's no hidden secrets to discover.

ML Question - Can we have a follow up interview with questions from your fans?
Mutt Lange - No. I don't see why that would be necessary. There's nothing new to learn about me.

ML Question - It's not suppose to make sense. Thanks for your time. We all hope your future is even more successful than your past although that's probably impossible and not going to happen. Your accomplishments will not be equaled or surpassed during our lifetimes.
Mutt Lange - You're welcome.

Special thanks to Mutt Lange for allowing this interview. Mutt Lange has more fans and admirers than he can really appreciate.

Shania Twain Likes Monticello

Dave Yarock, a financial planner by trade from Tenafly, hustled his mare Shania Twain to the lead as the field sped away from the starting gate and then they made every pole a winning one en route to a 1:59:3 victory in the $5000 Catskill Amateur Drivers Club Series at Monticello Raceway on Thursday, August 12.

“She’s a dream,” Yarock said about Shania Twain in the winners circle after her triumph. “Jimmy (trainer Jim Doherty, Jr.) had her in top form for this race and she put in a real good mile. I’m really very pleased with her performance, today.”

Sent off as the betting favourite in the race, Shania Twain, who returned $4.60 on a successful 'win' wager, didn’t disappoint as she rambled to a two-length triumph over a fast-closing Mr Restrictorplate and driver Michael Feigenbaum.

Third place went to Mr Touring who was driven by Cory Stratton (now 18 years of age, Stratton was granted his 'P' provisional license and now is eligible to drive in overnight races at most race tracks).

The $3,000 consolation in the amateur drivers series saw Eric Taddeo, a New York City fireman, hustle 19-1 shot Admirals Chance up in the final strides to win in 2:00:1.

From the OFC message board:

Another small Shania Twain mention in a magazine, this time page 5 of PEOPLE COUNTRY SPECIAL, dated September 2010. It says "SHANIA IN LOVE!  Shania Twain got a smooch from boyfriend Frederic Thiebaud at the Swiss Red Cross Ball in Geneva May 29." inside a small picture.

On page 17, there is also a little round Shania picture and news item that Shania's divorce was finalized in Switzerland.  On the same page under the Happy Birthday! list it includes Shania Twain, 45 on Aug. 28 (LeAnn Rimes has the same birthday, did not know that).

5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT SHANIA TWAIN
Each week we have more rumor and counter-rumor concerning American Idol and who will be sitting behind the judges table. J-Lo is in, then she's out, then she's in again, same with Steven Tyler, is he or isn't he? Even Nigel Lythgoe, who is returning to the show as producer, doesn't know what's going on, which bodes well for the show's future I must say. One new name to enter into the fray in the last seven days is that of Shania Twain. This is helpful to me actually, as I had planned to put her in five things this week anyway. Here, looking remarkably topical, are five things you didn't know about Shania Twain.

1) At 13, Eilleen Twain, the future "Shania" Twain, was invited to perform on CBC television's Tommy Hunter Show.

2) She changed her name to Shania, which is an Ojibwa word which means "on my way".

3) Twain's self-titled debut album was released in 1993 in North America. The album only reached #67 on the US Country Albums Chart

4) In January 2005, Twain joined Scentstories by Febreze to create a limited edition scent disc with the proceeds going to America's Second Harvest.

5) In 2009, scientists calculated that Twain's face has the "perfect" dimensions for a woman, based on measurements of facial features.

You learn something new every day.

Shania Twain, head the Fed!

America's leaders seem incapable of admitting to their mistakes, and of divulging the bitter truth of the price these will exact.

By Doron Tsur

Seven years ago I wrote a column: "Shania Twain, head the Fed!" The Canadian country-pop star was better suited to lead the U.S. Federal Reserve than the man then considered an economic maestro, Alan Greenspan, I argued.

It wasn't Twain's economic resume that impressed me. It was the lyrics in her song Ka-Ching, criticizing American economic behavior.

We've created us a credit card mess," Twain trilled. "We spend the money that we don't possess. When you're broke go and get a loan. Take out another mortgage on your home."

Well said. I wrote that the common sense demonstrated by this chanteuse, devoid as she might be of advanced economic education, was infinitely wiser than the tenets being espoused by guru Greenspan.

His policy was monetary expansion, enormously increasing the American government deficits under President George W. Bush. Greenspan was considered a visionary.

I concluded that appointing the singer to head the Fed might restore some common sense to the decision-making process at that hugely important institution.

The assumption that recession can be beaten back by increasing debt is wrong, I wrote at the time. It doesn't lead to sustained higher consumption. At best, people consume earlier, buying today and paying tomorrow - but it can't be done ad infinitum. It can only continue until bankruptcy ensues. Debt is not a cure for recession: It is an aspirin, and once its effect wears off, the pain comes back.

I also wrote that Washington was taking a vast gamble: that monetary and fiscal incentives would reignite the economy, creating enough growth to allow interest rates to be raised again, and to reduce the growing deficits.

If the gamble went Washington's way, well and good, and skeptics such as myself would have to eat their hats, I wrote. And if not? They would have to admit to indulging in voodoo economics, and start seeking real cures.

Who's eating hat?

I wrote all that seven years ago, in 2003. The way it reads, I could have written it today. For a while it seemed that I might have to start dining on hat: From 2004 to 2006, the U.S. economy did pick up. But then came 2007, and the cracks started to show, and 2008, when they widened into gaping chasms. I was spared chewing on chapeau.

Now it is common knowledge that the expansionary policy created the illusion of growth, based on cheap credit leading to an unsustainable, irrational inflation of housing prices. The expansionary policy turned out to have been voodoo economics after all, an aspirin that alleviated the pain for a bit, but solved nothing.

The effort to cure America's economic ills by voodoo economics continues, at a greater scope than before. As in 2003 it helped alleviate the symptoms, for a bit.

Waste reaches Washington

Some things have changed since 2003. Greenspan has been replaced by Ben Bernanke as chairman of the Fed. Meanwhile, Shania Twain's career seems stuck. She hasn't put out a new album in four years and recently told the press she's busy looking inwards. Her songs are played less and less.

We may therefore assume that she has free time. Who knows, maybe she also honed that sense of keen rationality she demonstrated in 2003. What's for sure is that the Fed and its leaders haven't spent the last seven years being introspective and learning any lessons. Therefore, allow me to reinstate my call from 2003, and from this platform I cry: Shania, stop gazing at your navel and hie thee to the Federal Reserve!

If she does, the singer will discover that the words she wrote nearly a decade ago still apply, even more keenly - but today the one spending money it doesn't have, the one borrowing too much, isn't the people but the government.

Now, as then, Twain's healthy common sense shows itself superior to the economic tenets of the decision-makers. They are digging the world into a deeper and deeper hole, because of their irresponsible inability to admit that their policy is wrong. They seem incapable of changing direction and telling the American public the bitter truth, divulging the real price of their mistakes over the last decades.

From day to day, that price is increasing. The bitter truth is that in the years to come the citizens of America, and probably of the rest of the world too, will see their standard of living fall. They will have to consume less, travel less, live in smaller homes, suffer greater crime rates and lose their sense of personal security. They will have to live with higher rates of unemployment, diminished quality of healthcare services, and even accept a lower life expectancy.

The bottom line is that there's not much the policy makers can do about it. Standards of living worldwide are going to drop: The most they can do is try to make the price of decades of irresponsibility more bearable. These are processes measured in years, not quarters.

Experience teaches that efforts to put off the price, as happened in 2003 with Greenspan's expansionary policy, merely do that - they put off the price to a later date, but the bill arrives and when it comes, it's bigger.

Shania, take the job, please, please take the job. Even if you don't know economic theory as well as the learned Ben Bernanke, at least you aren't a slave to mistaken concepts.

Sometimes what we need isn't an expert, it's a person with an open mind. Shania, come to the Fed! Better late than never.

CMA 2010: Female Trouble
by Kevin John Coyne
September 3, 2010

It’s pretty rare that the CMA nominations garner much attention outside of the country music press, but the always excellent Whitney Pastorek at Entertainment Weekly has a lengthy article trying to rationalize the exclusion of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift from the Entertainer category.

It’s amazing that in a year where a record was set for the most nominations by a female artist, there can still be a valid accusation of gender bias among the nominations.  Women have been poorly represented in the Entertainer category for pretty much the entire history of the CMA Awards.  Even when you include duos or groups with female members, there have never been more than two out of five nominees that are women.

Never. Think about that for a minute. If this category’s nominees are to be considered reliable, the CMA is essentially saying that there has never been a time in the past 44 years that more than two of the genre’s top five acts have been female, and in the past decade, there’s never been more than one.

Why is this coming to a head this year, when it’s been a problem all along?  Because there is no rational argument that exists, in this era of decreased record sales and economic downturn, for the exclusion of Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift from this category.  Ironically, the inclusion of another female artist – Miranda Lambert – makes the oversight even more obvious.  By any historical standard for this category, Lambert would be jockeying for fourth or fifth place, at best.

With all due respect to Brad Paisley and Keith Urban, their success this year would not get them into this category if they were women. Yet two women who have far exceeded them this year by every measurable standard, two women who are more immediately recognizable and widely beloved than Paisley and Urban have ever been, are left off of the list.

There’s a bias here, and it’s hurting the credibility of the CMA. How is it possible that acts long past their prime, like Brooks & Dunn or Vince Gill, were still getting Entertainer nominations regularly, yet superstars like Shania Twain, Faith Hill and Taylor Swift only made the cut once? Has there truly been no woman besides Reba McEntire in the last 25 years who has been one of the five top entertainers more than once?

Even if you strain your reason to justify Swift’s exclusion because she was a little less visible during the last three months of the eligibility period, the Underwood snub is the most blatantly unfair this category has seen since the days of Shania Twain, who somehow only earned one nomination while she was absolutely destroying the competition at an international level that has never been matched.

Perhaps the voting methodology of the CMA awards, which allows voters to pick up to five nominees in each category, has exacerbated the “token female” dilemma.  I don’t know, and I really don’t care. Because in an era where even the ACM Awards are showing better taste than the CMA’s, the flagship organization of country music needs to address its female trouble while it still has a single shred of credibility left.

Hollywood’s Ageless Beauties: Can You Guess Their Actual Age?

by Sarah Bernard, Host of The Thread, on Wed Sep 8, 2010 9:41am PDT

Age is a funny thing. We spend half our life trying to look older than we are and then the other half trying to dial back the clock. The truth is, aside from the obvious, lots of things can “age” us. The way we dress, our makeup choices, the way we do (or don’t) take care of our skin, all play a role. Today we’re nominating the five stars who are doing everything right in the ageless department.

Yes, genetics play a role, too. But there are certain stars who look nearly a decade younger than their resume says. See if you can guess the real ages of the five below:

1. "Modern Family" star, Julie Bowen, still finds time to run marathons, star in a hit TV show and showcase her glowy, flawless skin on the red carpet.

2. Talk show queen, Ellen DeGeneres, is a CoverGirl, a vegan and a pretty great hip hop dancer.

3. Actress/rocker/mom-of-two, Jada Pinkett Smith, has stunning, wrinkle-free skin and loves to experiment with her fashion.

4. "Entourage" hottie, Emmanuelle Chriqui, favors understated makeup, mini-dresses and oversized hoops earrings.

5. Cross-over country pop singer and mom, Shania Twain, looks even sexier now than she did when we first met her in the early 1990s.

Answers:
3. (38). 1. (40) 2. (52). 5. (45). 4. (32)

The fountain of youth just may be located in Nashville, judging by some of its most famous faces. Country music's hottest women over 40 look as good now -- if not better -- as they did in their 20s! We spotlight the country songbirds who keep the clock away naturally, through both healthy habits and attitude. Here are 10 gorgeous women over 40 who wear their age proudly, and very, very well.

Faith Hill
Age: 42
Fountain of Youth: When Faith turned 40, she began exercising in earnest with a routine that includes cardio, weightlifting and Pilates. She gave herself a birthday present for her 41st by appearing on the cover of Shape magazine -- in a bikini!

Her Secret: About her exercise routine, Faith noticed that she "slept better, had more energy and was stronger," she tells People magazine. "It was so hard, but so worth it. My core is much stronger, and my arms are more toned."

Reba McEntire
Age: 55
Fountain of Youth: Reba has a daily exercise routine of walking and Pilates, but she credits her diet for helping to keep her healthy and energetic.

Her Secret: "I splurge every once in awhile, but I do try to watch what I eat, stay away from complex carbs and eat as much protein and vegetables as possible," Reba tells OK magazine. "I fall off the wagon quite a bit, but I try. I read somewhere if you eat like a king in the morning, a princess at lunch and a pauper at dinner, you'll do well."

Shania Twain
Age: 45
Fountain of Youth: Shania has been a vegetarian for almost two decades, shunning meat and eggs. Always on the go, she mixes up her exercise routine with regular gym workouts and hiking with her son.

Her Secret: Shania's secret for healthy skin? Bag Balm. "When my skin is really dry, I'll rub it over my face and on my hair and leave it there all day," she tells People. Bag Balm is a mixture of petroleum jelly, lanolin and antiseptic that farmers use to soften cow udders!

Lee Ann Womack
Age: 44
Fountain of Youth: Every star relies on a touch of makeup here and there, but Lee Ann believes in the "less is more" philosophy. A few guidelines keep the mom of two looking and feeling her best, including using plenty of moisturizer and having a no-makeup rule when she's traveling.

Her secret: "I've always exercised," Lee Ann tells CMT, explaining that she doesn't really diet. "My exercise of choice is walking -- a power walk, not strolling."

Emmylou Harris
Age: 63
Fountain of Youth: A two-time beauty pageant winner as a teen, Emmylou has proved radiant at any age. With her gorgeous mane of flowing silver hair, no wonder Willie Nelson calls her "a natural beauty who knows there is no need to cover up."

Her Secret: She didn't start wearing makeup until she was in her 30s, but Emmylou says her biggest beauty decision was giving in to her prematurely gray hair. "Mother Nature knows what she's doing," she tells People. "It's the best thing I ever did."

Rhonda Vincent
Age: 48
Fountain of Youth: A mandolin, guitar and fiddle virtuoso long lauded in bluegrass circles, Rhonda looks inward to find the confidence to face the world with a youthful attitude.

Her Secret: "I finally feel like I know who I am," Rhonda tells The Boot. "I get to live my dream each day, playing the music I love. This gives me a confidence I never had before 40 ... You're as young as you feel. And I still feel like that same teenager, running around playing music. Music keeps you feeling young."

Martie Maguire
Age: 40
Fountain of Youth: Keeping up with twins Kathleen and Eva and baby Harper provide the Court Yard Hounds fiddler with plenty of exercise! Martie also stays active on the road with an exercise band, and at home on five-mile walks with husband Gareth.

Her Secret: Cher! Martie tells Out.com that she celebrated her birthday seeing the pop icon in concert. Backstage, Cher told Martie, who was scared of the big 4-0, that this was going to be the best year of her life. So far, so good!

Martina McBride
Age: 44
Fountain of Youth: With a bikini body even a teenager would envy, Martina is certainly disciplined. She also keeps her look fresh by framing her baby blue eyes in flattering hairstyles, from choppy bobs to long waves.

Her Secret: The mom of three tells Shape magazine that she became "fascinated with nutrition" when she was pregnant with daughter Delaney. "I love to read about healthy eating and preach to my husband, who doesn't listen! Now I'm trying to teach it to my daughters."
Martina McBride
Jon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

Trisha Yearwood
Age: 45
Fountain of Youth: Since her marriage to Garth Brooks in 2005, Trisha has stayed hip with the youth set by helping to raise three stepdaughters. Also an avid walker, the angelic-voiced blonde once spent three straight days walking 60 miles to help raise money for breast cancer research.

Her Secret: Trisha suggests always keeping a stocked fruit bowl and having frequent "veggie nights." "We like to sauté peppers, onions and carrots," she tells Health magazine. "In 30 minutes we have a table full of healthy food."
Trisha Yearwood
Jon Kopaloff, FilmMagic

Patty Loveless
Age: 53
Fountain of Youth: People often find that a sense of purpose keeps them vibrant and youthful, and Patty has found her purpose in campaigning for DRIVE4COPD, which raises awareness for lung diseases.

Her Secret: Patty's anti-aging recipe includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and activities. "I work out on a treadmill and with weights," she tells Lifescript.com. "I also enjoy taking walks with my husband and our two German shepherds."

How about Chad Kroeger? Or Celine Dion? The Mark speculates on which Canadian singer might pull a Wyclef Jean.

With ex-Fugee Wyclef Jean pondering a run for the Haitian presidency, The Mark got to thinking about Canadian musicians who might make good prime ministers. Or not. What would happen if the following stars ran for office?

bieber.jpg

Justin Bieber

Campaign Slogan: I can't vote for me, but you can!

Canada under Bieber: Every single one of Bieber’s Facebook fans votes for him, almost surpassing the total number of voters in Canada’s last federal election. Public outcry after $1 billion set aside for security at Bieber’s 17th b-day party. Police detain 900 screaming fangirls with “I Heart Justin” banners in ensuing madness. Parliament prorogued every time the Biebs has a bad hair day.

Problems: Fans confused by those “ballot” thingies used for voting. Where's the “send” button? Also: Bieber doesn't even know he's Canadian.

kroeger.jpg

Chad Kroeger

Campaign Slogan: %$#$@% Vote for Chad

Canada under Kroeger: Cabinet replaced with remaining members of Nickelback and revolving door of groupies. Newly renovated 22 Sussex Drive featured on episode of Cribs; Kroeger shows off bedroom he can play baseball in and king-size tub big enough for 10 plus him. Parliament prorogued every time the PM has a hangover.

Problems: Nickelback’s entire fan base shows up to vote, but apparently one vote doesn't make a difference. Nice try though, Jon Gosselin. The onion ring that has more fans than Stephen Harper takes over country, with the pickle that has more fans than Nickelback forming the official Opposition.

celine.jpg

Celine Dion

Campaign Slogan: Because You Love Me

Canada under Celine: Cabinet replaced with back-up dancers from Cirque du Soleil. Canada credited for fixing the Gulf oil spill crisis after Celine donates son Rene-Charles' hair to soak up the oil. PM regularly breaks into song during speeches: “Wit da signing of dis bill, it is a new day for dis wonderful country.” (Leg lunge) “A new day haaaaaaas … cooooooome …” Country’s economic woes cured by the magic of Celine’s voice. Parliament prorogued every time Celine gets in vitro.

Problems: Massive flooding devastates much of the country as a particularly rousing musical Question Period moves the entire electorate to tears.

avril.jpg

Avril Lavigne

Campaign Slogan: Like, Totally Vote for Avril

Canada under Avril: Avril takes easily to making political speeches; already used to spewing meaningless, redundant drivel. However, another political party tries to sue her for stealing their lame speech. Maple Leaf redesigned to incorporate stars, stripes, a giant anarchy symbol, and an unnecessary zipper. Parliament prorogued whenever it’s “a certain time of month.”

Problems: Problems, what problems? There's nothing a little auto-tune can't fix.

shania.jpg

Shania Twain

Campaign Slogan: Man, I Feel Like an Old White Guy

Canada under Shania: Cabinet replaced by male models with guitars. Opposition pressures Shania to release documents revealing just whose bed her boots have been under. Parliament prorogued because it don’t impress her much.

Problems: The longtime resident of a chateau in Switzerland, Shania is criticized for spending almost as much time outside of Canada as Ignatieff.

To science teacher Bill White, the female country music sensation Shania Twain adds much inspiration to his life. He even uses her as a teaching tool in his chemistry class.

“Not only is she a great singer, she’s a great chemist,” White said. “When she was young, she didn’t have much confidence. In her chemistry class she learned dimensional analysis and she was really good at it. It gave her confidence. A lot of my kids can relate to that.”

Sounds believable, right? White was just kidding. He just really likes Shania Twain.
Growing up in West Virginia, White’s father was a coal miner for 35 years. When offered a deal, White chose to get away from coal mining and achieve a higher education.

“He told me when I graduated that he had a job for me in the coal mine, unless I wanted to go to school,” White said. “I chose to go to school and major in chemistry. My brother, who was two years ahead of me, majored in chemistry. I followed in his footsteps, but then I changed my mind. I was in a stinky chemistry lab, looking out the window at all of the girls outside. I just didn’t think I wanted to be in a chemistry lab for the rest of my life. I took this survey class in teaching. My teacher was really good and I thought that’s what I wanted to do, so I did.”

During White’s junior and senior year of college, he served as a missionary for the Mormon Church. White was called to an Alaskan/Canadian mission.

“It was two years of no dating, no girls, no nothing,” White said. “Just working with people teaching them what I believe in. It’s given me faith that life’s important; [so is] peace, and calmness. I feel life goes on after you die, so you do the best you can here. There’s an eternal life for everybody.”

Starting out with teaching proved to be difficult for White. However, he managed.
“I started out teaching in a small school in West Virginia. My take home pay was $270 a month for 10 months,” White said. “But I had great kids and somehow I would make ends meet at the end of the month. But it was a good time.  I didn’t smoke, I didn’t drink, I didn’t have any girlfriends. [All I had to pay for] was gasoline and food.  I lived a simple life.”

White has been teaching for 47 years, 21 of which have been at FHS. The times have most definitely changed since he first began.

“Kids have gotten a little better,” White said. “In the 70’s, they were kind of dopey, smoking pot at lunch time. Some were pretty rough in West Virginia. Now, the kids I get are really nice, polite, and respectful. I appreciate that.”As for White’s personal life, he has three daughters and two sons. He lives at home with his wife, who is a science teacher at Warrenton Middle School, their daughter, son-in-law, and five grandchildren.

“It’s lively, they’re cute,” White said. “They keep you from being bored, just you and your wife just sitting there, looking at each other.”

Around school, White is famous for being able to do chin-ups on the doorframe, or maybe for being the teacher who has a very deep love for Shania Twain, but to those who have been in his class, White is an inspiration.

“I always say he’s someone that you’d want as your own grandpa. That’s what I think, he’s funny,” said senior Haram Shin. “Mr. White was my greatest mentor and friend. He was like one of our own.”

White always tries to bring excitement into his class.

“One day, Nurse Brittle came in to check on me, she knew I was taking medication for my back. It happened to be a day where I was wearing my Shania Twain shirt,” White said. “We were celebrating; it must have been Mole Day. I was ripping off my shirt, showing everyone Shania. Nurse Brittle saw this, and didn’t know what to think. She called my wife and said, ‘you better come get your husband, he’s losing it.’”

Even after 47 years of teaching, White still finds enjoyment with his classes each new school year.

“Every year is exciting, new kids, new faces,” White said. “I like [the students], I treat them like they’re family, but still I keep the idea that I’m their teacher, I’m not their equal, I’m the teacher. I think they like the old-time stories I bring into the class, the connection between past and present.”

International festival at St. Luke's

Cars, motorcycles, bargains, food and music to fill church and grounds

BY DOUG DAVIS • DOUGDAVIS@DNJ.COM • September 24, 2010

Music, classic cars and motorcycles will fill the grounds of St. Luke Catholic Church in Smyrna Saturday for an international festival.

The featured group will be Jaque Faye and The Gravy Train.

"We do '60s to '90s country music, the stuff I grew up on and which inspired my own music," said Jaquelyn Kleffman, aka Jaque Faye.

The Fresno, Calif., native has been in Middle Tennessee for the past eight years, and plans to record an album in January.

"I've always been into music, but started writing it eight years ago," she said. "Shania Twain was one of my biggest influences. She wrote her own music and had an upbeat attitude, which I like to have as well."

She calls her group's sound "California country," influenced by the old twang of Dwight and Buck, great melodies of Fleetwood Mac, and strong, classy-woman appeal of Linda Rondstadt, Emmylou Harris and Twain.

Expect to hear a couple of original songs from Jaque Faye, along with Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe," Emmylou's "One More Bottle of Wine," and Shania's "No One Needs to Know."

The festival has been an annual event nearly every year for 10 or more years for the church, which was founded in the early 1980s. Money raised from the event has been used to support medical missions in Mexico and Haiti, as well as to help fund improvements to the church.

"This year, funds are being used for new church development and the building fund," said Susan Elliott, a founding member of the church and self-proclaimed co-pilot of the festival with her husband, Bill.

The festival is a two-day event, beginning at 6 p.m. tonight with a Filipino meal and karaoke.

Day-long events Saturday include a yard sale beginning at 7 a.m. and Knights of Columbus-sponsored breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. International and American foods will be served around 11 a.m., and a yard sale and games for all ages will be held.

Live music begins Saturday with Mercy's Edge, a country/contemporary gospel group at 10 a.m., followed by the contemporary-gospel group Changed at 11 a.m., and the featured group, Jaque Faye and The Gravy Train, at noon. At 3:30 p.m., the Southern rock group One Hour to Midnight, consisting of members from the church's adult choir, will perform.

The classic car show and motorcycle show is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

"Anyone can go to the festival and vote on their favorite car or truck," Susan Elliott said.

There is no entry fee for the motorcycle or vehicle entries or to hear the free concerts, games and inflatables.

Space is being rented for the yard sale for $25 each; tables are provided for $10 extra.

"We have had everything from clothing, furniture and household items," Elliott said.

A silent auction, which continues today through Sunday, will include original etchings from Lionel Barrymore, a free night at a Nashville hotel, restaurant gift certificates and handmade afghans. Winners of the silent auction won't be announced until 1 p.m. Sunday.

NASHVILLE SKYLINE: Country's Future: Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Don Williams

Plus: One Man's CMA Awards Predictions

Is this in country music's immediate future?

Shania Twain's comeback album should be spectacular. Skeptics are already saying that without the guiding hand of guru/former husband Mutt Lange, she will flounder. Knowing what I know about Twain, I suspect her new venture will be successful. Just like Dolly Parton, Shania is a veritable iron butterfly. Deceptively wispy but with a steel backbone and with shrewd intelligence. Shania will triumph.

Don Williams' new comeback tour will be a minor sensation. Unlikely? Stranger things have happened, and Williams' song catalog is one of the strongest in modern country music. In the '70s, he was a mainstay. He more or less disappeared from modern country music in the early '90s, but a man who has had 17 No. 1 country hits should never be counted out. Consider some of the songs he made famous. Eric Clapton recorded his "Tulsa Time" for a pop hit. "Amanda" was also a hit for Waylon Jennings and still resounds in clubs and honky-tonks. Prominent Nashville bass player Dave Pomeroy has signed on for the Williams tour, which began this week and runs through the end of October.

Taylor Swift will endure. Despite the constant and furious attacks from naysayers, Swift is a genuine music pathfinder in songwriting and in speaking for her generation. When the greatest living songwriter on earth, Kris Kristofferson, endorses Swift as he did at the recent All for the Hall benefit at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, you know you have a gold chip stock. Sayeth Kristofferson in response to an interviewer asking him if Swift might someday aspire to membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame, "She's already in the Hall of Fame!"

Jamey Johnson will continue to reign as country music's shining beacon of musical integrity. He kisses no ass and takes no prisoners, and his music blazes with an intensity like nobody else's in any musical genre these days. Lyric of the year: "It might be lonely at the top, but it's a bitch at the bottom." The most important thing to realize about Jamey is that he is the key to Nashville for the national and international media. He is the magical link between the gritty, golden past of Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings and today's pastel, pastoral country.

Carrie Underwood will graciously serve as co-host of the CMA Awards show despite being continually ignored for the nomination for the CMA entertainer of the year award. Several other artists I know would scorn the show given the same circumstances. Underwood has endured all of this with great patience and serene poise.

Record labels will continue to throw beautiful young male and female aspiring artists at the wall to see if any will stick. It's a desperate attempt to capture the elusive youth market Taylor discovered. Thus far, not many are sticking to that wall.

This week's predictions for the 2010 Country Music Award winners:

Entertainer of the year -- Lady Antebellum
Female vocalist -- Miranda Lambert
Male vocalist -- Brad Paisley
Album of the year: Lady A's Need You Now
Musical event -- Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins' "Hillbilly Bone"
New artist -- Zac Brown Band
Vocal group -- Lady A
Single -- Lady A's "Need You Now"
Song -- Miranda Lambert's "The House That Built Me" (written by Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin)
Music Video: "The House That Built Me" (directed by Trey Fanjoy)

We will be subjected to more and more songs about Georgia clay and Georgia mud.

Every country artist who looks camera-ready and is capable of being vocally auto-tuned will appear in a movie.

Despite my best efforts to stomp such songs out, mediocre country songwriters and singers will continue to churn out the "I'm so country" songs, full of grocery lists of stuff that they think defines country. There is still hope, though. We pretty much ran off all the redneck songs.

Stop that Shania! Just stop it!

By David Helwig
SooToday.com
Wednesday, October 06, 2010

SooToday.com News has received the following note from faithful reader Allison Pomeroy, who spotted this shameful photo of way-too-seductive Canadian country legend Shania Twain on one of our news stories:

*************************
Hello:

I am writing to you in complaint over the picture used in the advertisement of the Shania Twain Centre through Tourism Timmins viewed on your website this evening.

When I clicked on the news report of the transport rollover update I was surprised to see a seductive picture of a woman and was concerned that one of my young children would see and wonder what kind of website I was viewing.

I would hope that the advertisement would be reviewed and a more tasteful photo could be replaced.

I have also e-mailed the Tourism Timmins website directly.

I would hope that you would use every effort possible to keep your website as family-friendly as possible.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review this advertisement and prevent future situations like this.

Snowbird is better than These Eyes? You wanna take this outside?

But he doesn't anticipate that any fights are going to break out in the genteel surroundings of the Grant Park Shopping Centre book nook either.

Mersereau has already launched the book in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto and acknowledges: "You get the usual debates. Why is this song on? Why isn't this song on?"

Notable bestselling absentees on the list include Shania Twain, Gino Vannelli, Sarah McLachlan, Avril Lavigne, and Nickelback.

But as with Mersereau's last effort, The Top 100 Canadian Albums, the book is intended as a point of reference for passionate pop music fans. It's the background details such as the ones detailed above that gives the book its meat.

"The list is the immediate thing," Mersereau says. "But really, it's about telling 100 stories."

In any case, the compilation was a highly democratic process involving a poll of 800 musicians, record industry honchos and journalists, each of whom submitted their own Top 10 lists from which Mersereau ultimately gleaned his final tally.

The Winnipeg stop, hosted by local music historian John Einarson, should be one of his easier stops, given the heavy local representation of local boys the Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive and Neil Young.

But Mersereau. 49, says he hasn't seen much in the way of regional chauvinism as his book tour goes on.

"Everybody's got their favourites," he says. "That's the whole point."

I think they meant to put Sheryl Crow, not Shania.

What's sad is that Shania is out of the spotlight for such long periods of time, she really could have had a relationship with another guy without her fans knowing anything about it.  Shania's fans know so much less about her life than they seem to realize.

Taylor Swift

Speak Now

Like Rihanna’s last album could only be read in light of her relationship to abusive ex Chris Brown, it’s impossible not to think of Kanye West when listening to Swift’s first full-length since his outburst at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

She devotes just one song to the affair: the testy/tender ballad Innocent, 11 songs along. Therein, she takes an uncanny matronly tone with the rapper. “I guess you really did it this time,” she chides. “Lost your balance on a tightrope / Lost your mind trying to get it back / Wasn’t it easier in your lunch box days?” Ouch.

Even apparently understanding lines are double-edged. “It’s all right, just wait and see,” the 20-year-old reassures him, “32 and still growing up now / Who you are is not what you did / you’re still an innocent.”

What better way to announce your own maturity than to forgive your egomaniacal aggressor, and pat him on the head while you’re at it? Swift’s third album is all about saying the things that go unsaid, particularly in response to those who have done her wrong.

She writes her own songs, using her own life experiences as source material.

“P.s.: To all the boys who inspired this album, you should’ve known. ;)” she writes in the liner notes.

Opener Mine is a hokey country rocker about lovers trying to make a go of it – one of several where Swift is mulling over the ups and downs of male-female relations. But it’s laughable to hear her sing “We’ve got bills to pay,” as if she were the girl next door trying to make ends meet. Jack and Diane this is not.

She gets all worked up on Sparks Fly; bids adieu to former flame Taylor Lautner (of Twilight fame) on Back to December; calls out John Mayer (“Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?”) on the bruised waltz Dear John; gets back at her critics with the banjo-adorned ditty Mean; and rocks out on the Avril Lavigne-worthy cat fight Better Than Revenge (reportedly aimed at actress Camilla Belle, who scooped up Joe Jonas from under her nose).

It’s all very slick, snappily written and smoothly sung. Swift is easing into her role as the future Shania Twain. She isn’t and never really has been a country singer per se. She’s a pop star first and foremost, using her southern roots as a novelty factor to give her something resembling street cred – or the teen-pop equivalent: emotional resonance.

It helps. Her voice achieves a maturity and depth that, when given room, ranges from Norah Jones to Céline Dion territory. The girl has spunk, and with a hit machine like this behind her, she’s singing all the way to the bank.

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Another unique aspect he pointed to was her [Taylor Swift] youth and ability to straddle both the country and pop worlds by appealing to fans who love Britney Spears and who used to follow Shania Twain, but who also enjoy contemporary country stars like Carrie Underwood. Add in super catchy songs and the Big Machine label's strategy of getting Speak Now into everywhere from big-box stores and mom-and-pop shops to Hot Topic, Starbucks and maybe even your local 7-Eleven, and the picture starts to come into clear view.
