Shania Twain fan issues challenge to community

My first visit to Timmins was August of 2003. I was aware of your community many years before that due to the publicity associated with Shania Twain.

Until the Shania Twain Centre started sponsoring an annual fan convention, I never justified the expense of travelling to your community.

Now I look forward with eager anticipation to return often and visit "The City with a Heart of Gold."

One of the traditions the fans started during the first convention in 2003 was to gather contributions from the Shania Twain Fan Convention attendees to be given to your local food bank.

Over the last five years, these visitors from all over the world have contributed more than $4,600 in cash out of their own pockets to your local food bank.

We have publicly presented our donation each year to a representative of your city council at the closing dinner banquet of the convention.

This year I'd like to issue a friendly challenge to "The City with a Heart of Gold."

During the convention this year, there will be a community concert held at the Shania Twain Centre on Saturday and I'd like to see what the community can do to match or surpass what the Shania Twain fans have done.

Every single dollar you contribute will go directly to the food bank in your area.

The Shania Twain Centre has agreed to have you drop by the Centre before Saturday to leave your donation or you can find a collection booth at the concert on Saturday.'

On behalf of the fans who now visit your community annually to attend the Shania Twain Fan Convention each August, thank you for your hospitality and sharing your home with us during our visits.

I look forward to see what kind of response the Timmins community (whether individuals or businesses or both) will make to this invitation to help your fellow citizens who need assistance for a warm meal and a little something extra in their food pantry.
