Not many Canadians to root for at Grammys

Thu, December 4, 2008
By JANE STEVENSON, Sun Media

Neil Young is nominated for best solo rock vocal performance for No Hidden Path from his album Chrome Dreams II.

Lil Wayne leads Grammy noms with 8, Coldplay 7

Grammy organizers are clueless

Lets face it straight on.

Canadian artists have had much better showings at the Grammys than the eight nods we just got and not a multiple nominee among them.

But with such Grammy favourites as Feist, Nelly Furtado, Michael Buble, Nickelback and Joni Mitchell nominated last year, outright snubs of Alanis Morissettes Flavours Of Entanglement and Celine Dions Taking Chances this year and no new product from the likes of Avril Lavigne, Diana Krall, Shania Twain, and Sarah McLachlan, its not a total surprise.

By the way, what exactly was the point of Dion singing Janis Ians At Seventeen during that lame live Grammy nominations concert on Wednesday night?

Anyways, here then are the Canadians you can root for when the Grammys get underway on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles:

Neil Young best solo rock vocal performance for No Hidden Path from his album Chrome Dreams II.

Rush best rock instrumental performance for Hope (Live for The Art of Peace) from Songs For Tibet: The Art of Peace.

Rufus Wainwright best traditional pop vocal album for Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall.

Actors Ellen Page and Michael Cera who sang on Juno, which is up for best compilation soundtrack album.

Lebanon-born but Toronto-raised Isabel Bayrakdarian best classical vocal performance for Gomidas Songs.

Montreal pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin best instrumental soloist performance (without orchestra) for In A State Of Jazz.

Alberta-based Northern Cree best native American music album for Red Rock.

Walter Ostanek best polka album for Back to Back Hall of Fame Polkas.
