Aug. 1-- Eight young men, counsellors and campers from the Taylor Statten Camp, made a canoe trip to James Bay. The men began their journey at Algonquin Park.

* Aug. 2-- The Father Les Costello Foundation hosted its third-annual fundraising dinner at the Dante Club. The proceeds were donated to charitable foundations.

* * *

* Aug. 4-- École secondaire catholique Thériault graduates, from the class of 1988 reunited at the school once more for the 20th anniversary of their graduating year. Nearly 100 graduates made way to Timmins to tell tales and share memories of their school days.

* * *

* Aug. 5-- The Thériault girls basketball team organized a bottle drive to help fund a trip to a basketball camp in Thunder Bay. The team collected more than 200 boxes of beer bottles.

* * *

* Aug. 6-- Hydro One made a $25,000 PowerPlay grant to the Town of Moosonee to upgrade the basketball court, playgrounds and rink.

* * *

* Aug. 7-- The Shania Twain Centre hosted its sixth-annual World Wide Shania Twain Convention. Participation in the event dropped greatly due to the cost of airfares and gas.

* Aug. 8-- The Timmins Police canine unit located a suspect in connection with the break-in and robbery of the LCBO in the Hollinger Court.

* Aug. 11-- The Porcupine Horticultural Society held its 61st flower, vegetable and craft show with nearly 360 colourful and interesting entries on display.

* Aug. 12-- After 10 years of holding an annual Garden of Art Show and Sale, the Group of Six put an end to the anticipated summer event.

* Aug. 13-- The seventh TimminsGetClean cleanup took place. Organizers and volunteers believed that Timmins was ready to get another face-lift.

* Aug. 14-- A 17-year-old driver was taken to Timmins and District Hospital when a medical problem caused a collision spanning two blocks on Algonquin Boulevard.

* * *

* Aug. 15-- A Schumacher resident was convicted of illegally shooting a bull moose. As a result, he was fined $1,500 and had his hunting privileges taken away for one year.

* * *

* Aug. 18-- Timmins Police arrested a 36-year-old man following a holdup at a Toke street variety store. The man was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and possession of property obtained by crime.

* * *

* Aug. 19-- The South Porcupine detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police announced a new law allowing police to seize the vehicles of repeat drunk drivers.

* * *

* Aug. 20-- A local woman held a fundraiser to benefit for seven-year-old granddaughter, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

* * *

* Aug. 22-- Grocery stores in Timmins and the surrounding area cleared their shelves of recalled meat products. After one reported death and 16 probable cases of Listeria monocytogenes, Maple Leaf announced a recall expansion of some of its packaged meat products manufactured in Toronto.

* * *

* Aug. 23-- Local land owners were displeased with the fact that the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) representatives were not present and able to answer questions during the second provincial land tax public meeting.

* * *

* Aug. 25-- The Porcupine Big Brothers and Big Sisters Association held a very ducky fundraiser. More than 1,000 rubber ducks were sent down the Mattagami River in a very big duck race.

* * *

* Aug. 27-- An elderly resident died at the Timmins and District Hospital as a result of Listeria linked to the outbreak at the Maple Leaf Foods Plant in Ontario.

* * *

* Aug. 28-- A drug investigation by the Cochrane detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police and the OPP drug enforcement section resulted in the arrest of four Cochrane residents.

* * *

* Aug. 29-- Gilles Bisson kicked off his Ontario NDP leadership campaign with a press conference, claiming he wanted to represent people from all parts of the province, not just the North.

* * *

* Aug. 30-- The Timmins Police Service warned local businesses about accepting $100 bills after two companies reported receiving counterfeit money.
