Swim or skate away Family Day

Posted By BRANDON WALKER, THE DAILY PRESS

If swimming's your thing, throw on a suit for Family Day and dive into the pool at the Archie Dillon Sportsplex.

It opens Monday from 9:30- 10:45 a. m. and again from 1:15-2:30 p. m.

If you prefer the frozen variety of water, there's also skating at the Sportsplex from 11 a. m. until noon.

There is also public skating at the Mountjoy Arena from 1-2 p. m. and at the McIntyre Arena from 3-4 p. m.

Last year, about 100 residents participated in activities during the first Family Day, introduced by the province to promote spending time with loved ones.

"We're definitely hoping more will come this year," said Marc Roy, administration and program supervisor with the city's leisure services department.

He believes if the weather is nice many will hit the hills for cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, tubing and sliding.

"If it's a beautiful day people will most likely take advantage of those opportunities."

The Shania Twain Centre will give free tours for students, said manager Tracy Hautanen.

The centre is open from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m.

If you'd like to spend Family Day curled up with a book, make sure to visit the Timmins Public Library today, because it will be closed on Sunday and on the holiday Monday.
