I don't think Don't was a random song. It is about two people having an argument. One is trying to get the other to communicate and not shut them out. Maybe that is when the end happened for them or maybe just for Mutt and Shania thought they'd patched it up and then bam she finds out he was cheating on her and the marriage ends. Maybe he had started cheating on her when that song was written. Or the song could have been one she'd written years ago before she met Mutt who knows. That is why I love to hear her tell the stories behind the songs. I love knowing what inspired them because this is always something personal. What about the song Don't be stupid? That one is about a man who is very insecure and jealous over his wife. The way she sings about how he gets suspicious when she paints her nails and looking over her shoulder when she reads her mail. I think that one is really what was going on with Mutt. The rumors are that he was very jealous over her and didn't want her to have any male friends. Inspiration can come from anywhere. A friend can tell you something they are going through and if you put yourself in their situation you can write it from their point of view. Things don't have to happen to you personally to inspire you to write about them. Just my thoughts. Warmest regards as always, Tonto

Tonto........I agree with your first suggestion on the song writing of Don't Be Stupid. I would put money on the notion that he is a very jealous, controlling man. Mutt Lange hides behind closed doors for a reason. I think someday if the truth were ever to be told about who he really is that people would be rather surprised to find out he is not as great as she made him out to be......in fact, he is likely just the opposite. A person does not go around buying up photos of themself unless they have an extreme personality.......why would anyone care?
I like reading or watching interviews where Shania talks not about her life but about her songs and describes what influenced her to write this and that. And she spoke about "Don't!" in CMT Special interview in 2004 (hope, I understood all words correctly while watching the video and trying to catch them all):
"Well Mutt had this title "Don't!" for a long-long time and we toiled around with it a lot... It's a negative... "Don't" is such a negative thing and I like to write about positive things. So it was like how we can make this positive. So we toiled over that for a long time and ended up with basically "Don't give up on us". The way Mutt describes it is you wanna be driving in your car after having an argument with the person that you love whether it was that morning or the month before or whatever and whoever this relationship might be with, this song comes on the radio and you realise wow! I think I've messed something up I've got to call this person and say sorry and try to turn around and get them to forgive me and we gotta work this out. So we wanted it to prompt that."
And a capture from this video to help you to remember it.
Of all her music,I thought Don't was different. It had a sad , feeling to it. I think it's the only song of hers that I haven't liked. She looked so beautiful in the video, it was hard to believe someone would give up on her. A man who had everything and it still wasn't enough? I think Mutt needs to read the Good Book.
I wouldn't like to suggest that their marriage was in trouble when the song "Don't" was penned, but from what Shania said in an interview, this was a title her ex had for a long time and it was used in a movie.
