Last updated at 6:08 PM on 16th April 2009

It was an unremarkable cold and drizzly morning in Scotland, but the world's eyes were fixed on a grey pebble-dashed semi on a West Lothian estate. Inside was Susan Boyle, who had popped to the hairdressers and put on her jewellery in preparation for her appearance on Good Morning America. The unlikely singing sensation, who can already count Demi Moore and Oprah Winfrey amongst her fans, sang live to the show's 5 million viewers via satellite.

Going by physical appearance alone, the amateur singer is the most unlikely showbusiness sensation. But the Britain's Got Talent favourite won the Easter ratings war for ITV with her performance of I Dreamed a Dream, and is already being lined up as a global star. Show creator Simon Cowell is predicting a No. 1 album in America for the singleton church-goer, after announcing Oprah Winfrey, America's top talkshow host, had asked her onto the show. The world's eyes were on Susan's unremarkable terraced house in West Lothian

Some 18 million people from around the globe have seen Miss Boyle's performance after more than 200 versions of it were posted up by fans on the website Youtube. And her fanbase has extended much further than the ratings-winning 11.8 million who watched her on the show on Saturday night. As well as featuring on America's prestigious Good Morning America programme she has appeared on the NBC Today Show - where presenter Kathie Lee Gifford was moved to tears by the performance.

Drying her eyes: The host had to grab a sock - being used for the next segment - to wipe away her tears Kutcher, 31, had posted a link on the social networking site Twitter, saying: 'This just made my night.'
Responding as Mrs Kutcher, the actress told him on the site: 'You saw it made me teary'. Cowell spoke today about the interest Miss Boyle Cowell had attracted in the US.

He said of the 48-year-old: 'She literally just had an offer from Oprah to do her show. 'If she went on Oprah I think there's every chance Susan Boyle will have the number one album in America, I will predict that.'
Many are predicting she could repeat the success of Paul Potts, another unlikely star, who became famous across the world after he went on the show. Unemployed Miss Boyle, who has bushy eyebrows, is now one of the favourites to win.

Singing sensation: Britain's Got Talent's Susan Boyle is already a global star - thanks to the internet Her powerful rendition of the Les Miserable hit won her a standing ovation from the crowd when she performed.
Miss Boyle told presenters Ant and Dec that she lived alone with her cat Pebbles for company. It has emerged that the reclusive singer had gone into hiding amid the tidal wave of interest in her.

Tears: Susan broke down following her successful performance
Speaking from Susan’s home in Blackburn, West Lothian, brother John said: 'The reaction Susan is getting from people is just amazing. She is long overdue some recognition.
'I think part of her appeal is that behind the voice she is just such a nice and lovely person too.

'She is as high as a kite, and she is delighted with everything that is going on. Britain's Got Talent is a wonderful opportunity for her to have a normal and stable life and that’s exactly what she deserves.'
Fans: Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore watched Susan Boyle's audition tape on YouTube
But John insists that the sudden interest and recognition from all over the world has been hard for her to get to grips with.
He said: 'All the attention has been quite an upheaval and she is quite tired. I have taken her away to let her have some peace and quiet before the next round.'
Miss Boyle is staying with a friend while she prepares herself for the next stage in the competition – in which she is expected to sing Whistle Down the Wind from the musical of the same name.

But her brother revealed that before she left she got her first batch of fan mail, in the shape of a letter all the way from Australia.
John said: 'This morning she got letters from Australia congratulating her and she has had people from as far away as America and Canada get in touch.

'We have family abroad and they called to let us know they had seen Susan on television which was just unbelievable.'
Miss Boyle told the Mail: 'I’m just taking it one step at a time. The phone’s never stopped ringing. Apparently even Australian radio want to talk to me too now. Everyone’s been so lovely and supportive, and I’ve had loads of well-wishers.

'I’m just taking it one step at a time, but so far I’m enjoying it immensely.'
