Canada Day festivities spread out throughout the city

Festivities spread out throughout the city

Timmins residents will have a blast celebrating Canada Day and the area's history across the city.

Canada Day festivities begin as usual on Wednesday, with a free pancake breakfast at the Shania Twain Centre.

There will be an Elvis Impersonator, a tai chi presentation, Scottish dancers, karaoke and more.

The early festivities will go from 9 a. m. to 2 p. m.

It's in the evening when things will be different than previous years.

Generally fireworks for Canada Day are held at Gillies Lake.

This year, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of when gold was found in Porcupine, the fireworks will be held on Porcupine Lake, starting at 10 p. m.

"Fireworks will be set up behind Northern College," said Coun. John Curley.

The boomers and poppers will go off rain or shine, he said.

Mayor Tom Laughren estimated the city would spend between $10,000 and $15,000 for around 15 minutes of colourful explosions.

"It's to commemorate when the first prospectors came down the Porcupine River system to Porcupine Lake," Laughren said.

"It was 1909 when the Hollinger Mine, the Dome and the McIntyre were discovered and Porcupine was the first area that was settled."

The 100th-anniversary committee wanted to acknowledge the history using the fireworks.

Laughren said anyone who would like to donate funds toward the fireworks can do so at city hall.

Laughren said Karl Habla, a. k. a. Mr. Canada, will be holding his walk from city hall to Schumacher in the morning.
