7th Annual Shania Twain Fan Convention articles

Fan come on over

Posted By Arron Pickard, The Daily Press

About 30 Twainiacs will converge on the City with the Heart of Gold Thursday for the seventh-annual Shania Twain Fan Convention.

Some arrived early yesterday, while the remainder are expected to roll in sometime today, said Shania Twain Centre manager Tracy Hautanen. Starting tomorrow, participants will have a full schedule of events to keep them occupied until the farewell breakfast on Sunday.

“We’re taking them to city hall to meet the mayor and then to CTV so see where Shania used to do interviews,” Hautanen said.

Participants will also spend a day at a boy scout camp to showcase Timmins’ natural bounty, she said.

“We know that Shania loves the outdoors, so we thought that would be a good tie in. Shania went to summer camp, so we’re taking them to summer camp. We’re going to roast hot dogs around the camp fire, have a scavenger hunt and a nature walk.”

On Saturday, Hautanen said, a few special guests will be attending the event, people from Shania’s past who are going to chat with the fans. Other events include an awards ceremony and karaoke and, of course, the official visit of the Shania Twain Centre.

“There is a lot of planning involved with this event because we have a lot of people who come year after year and we need to make sure we’re doing something different. There always needs to be a tie in with Shania Twain and we try to make sure it’s a lot of fun. I think we’re doing something right because they keep coming back.”

Some regular fans have dropped out of this year’s convention, she said, but sent regrets that they could not attend due to the economy.

“Our numbers are low but the economy certainly isn’t helping much. Those who are coming are pulling out all the stops to be here. We have received quite a few e-mails from people who aren’t able to attend sending their well wishes.”

Fans have ventured from all over the globe, coming from as far away as the Netherlands and England. Quite a few of the participants reside in the U.S., Hautanen said. The first couple of years, fans were coming to Timmins to see the Shania Twain Centre. Now, they’re coming to see friends they’ve made through this event.

Betsy Perry of North Carolina has been participating in the convention since the first year. She said all convention participants have made lasting friendships throughout the years and they keep in touch on a regular basis.

Perry was a relatively new Shania Twain fan when she first attended the convention. She had seen three of Shania’s concerts when she heard about the convention.

This year, she drove the long distance from North Carolina to Timmins. She left Saturday morning with Debbie Smith of California and drove to New York where they picked up Chris Backa. They then drove to Niagara Falls and then to Timmins.

“We made it a three-day trip,” she said. “We’ve also travelled by plane, train and bus. We enjoy being able to get to see the city and the surrounding area. We went to the Mattagami First Nation one year, it was a real delight to see that, and we’ve been to see the polar bears in Cochrane.

Adding to the overall experience for the fans, she said, is getting to meet the people in Timmins, who are “so welcoming and warm.”

Hautanen said she has come to look forward to seeing the fans every year and hearing stories about their adventures.

“It’s extremely nice to feel their loyalty to the Shania Twain Centre, it’s overwhelming,” Hautanen said.

As for having Shania Twain attend, it would be difficult to have the types of events the convention is known for if Shania were to attend, Hautanen said. Her presence would draw thousands upon thousands of people and media and the centre wouldn’t be able to take them all on a bus and visit places Shania frequented.

“It would be nice to have her here because the numbers would be huge, but the camaraderie that has been built over the past seven years wouldn’t be possible.”

SHANIA TWAIN: Fans worldwide converge in Timmins for annual convention

Posted By CHELSEY ROMAIN THE DAILY PRESS

It was all things Shania as the remaining Twainiacs descended upon Timmins for the seventh annual fan convention.

More about the people they have met along the way than anything else these days, those who came from far and wide were anticipating a weekend filled with gatherings, surprises and special guests.

Shania Twain Centre manager Tracy Hautanen said the centre was expecting roughly 30 fans, with the final few arriving yesterday.

"A lot of them have been here since Sunday," Hautanen said. "It's absolutely a reunion for many of them.

"They come to a place that's common for them and see friends they haven't seen in a while."

Hautanen's sentiments were echoed by the few that scattered the centre yesterday, before the official start to this year's convention.

Bianca Verhaar made her second trip to Northern Ontario from her home in the Netherlands for the convention, anxious to see those she hasn't seen since her first convention three years ago.

"I've been a fan since 2004 when I saw her Chicago concert on TV.," Verhaar said. "I loved the music and the lyrics are so good.

"I look forward to just being around everyone and having fun."

Verhaar isn't the only one to travel thousands of kilometres to visit the City with the Heart of Gold once again.

Matt Davis and his mother have been attending conventions for five years, each time traveling from Manchester, England.

Davis said he first came to Canada for the third convention, when several Europeans attended.

"I wanted to see the centre and thought with the convention going on it would be more interesting," Davis told The Daily Press yesterday. "When I got here I realized what it was all about and I met some pretty cool people."

And while it may be the people they have met along the way, it was a love for Twain's music that brought them together in the first place.

Davis said it was listening to Twain's music that introduced him to other country greats.

"I was big into rock music. When I heard her songs, I thought it was different so I would give it a try," Davis said. "When I realized it was country it turned me on to others like Alan Jackson and Toby Keith."

Even after seven years, many fans, having attended each and every convention, said it's important to make sure they have new and different activities for the fans every year, said Hautanen.

And while past favourites such as karaoke, tours and the annual trivia contest continue, one event stands out above all others: The chance to meet and speak to those who once played an important role in Twain's life.

"We try to have special guests from her past, anyone who has played some role in her past," Hautanen said, adding that in the past, former band members and even her former manager have come to visit.

"It's important to the fans that come here.

"Because they are so respectful of Shania, it's important they know she surrounded herself with great people over the years."

Throughout the weekend, the fans will travel to key places key in Twain's past including a day at a campsite to signify the singer's past camping experience and a stop at the Timmins Therapeutic Riding Association.

"Shania is very passionate about horses, so we wanted them to learn about things that Shania cares about," Hautanen said.

The weekend's major event includes a chance for fans to be treated like a celebrity as they take to the red carpet for the centre's very own CMA awards.

"We wanted to give them the red carpet treatment at an awards show and provide them with a celebrity experience," said Hautanen.

The fan convention wraps up on Sunday with a farewell brunch.

Still The One

Posted By Brandon Walker, The Daily Press

The annual Shania Twain Fan Convention ended yesterday with a brunch at the McIntyre Coffee Shop.

A group of around 30, many of them sporting Shania Twain T-shirts, sat at several tables and spoke about what the singer and the convention means to them.

A number of them were on cellphones, communicating with other fans, affectionately referred to as "family," who couldn't make it this year.

John Pellumbo, a doctor from Ottawa, trailered his black 1988 Lamborghini Countach to attend his first-ever fan convention.

His quirky sense of humour made him an instant hit with this bunch of Twain-loving jet-setters, plus they liked his car.

He's known about Twain and her music since the mid-90s but it's only been in the last year he's become an "admirer," as he describes himself, not a fan.

"Most fans know everything about her, I don't know that much. I became more exposed to her in the last year because we have a lot in common."

He went through a separation around the same time as Twain and her husband, Mutt Lange, split, plus Pellumbo said they share similar life philosophies.

"I'm sure they're a lot like her too," he said, gesturing to the other fans sitting at nearby tables.

"That's why we get along so well; they're very down to earth."

Richard Sessions has been to all seven fan conventions.

He travelled this year from his home in Indiana with his wife Clover.

"Many couldn't make it because of the economy and are following on the (Shania Twain Centre) website instead," Sessions said.

Nearly a dozen fans called during breakfast to say hello and wish the Twain jet-setters a safe trip home.

Each year the fans donate funds to a local charity. In previous years they've raised $6,000 for the food bank. This year the group donated $333 to the Rainbow therapeutic stables, one of the many places they visited while in town.

Many have met Twain and speak highly of her.

The death of Twain's grandmother last week and the possibility that the singer could be in town this week for the funeral, didn't seem to provide an incentive for the fans to extend their visit.

"We as fans have decided we aren't going to talk about it or go looking for her," Sessions said after the other Twainiacs, as they're often called, headed back to the Shania Twain Centre.

"We want to respect her privacy. We would be thrilled if she showed up (to the convention) but we're just as happy to celebrate her and what she means to us."

Selina Twain, the singer's paternal grandmother, died Wednesday at Extendicare Nursing Home. She was 86. Her funeral is today at St. Anthony's Cathedral in Timmins.

New Shania album 'nowhere in sight'

Posted by The Daily Press

As Richard Sessions prepared to leave Timmins yesterday, he said more fans would have liked to have attended the annual Shania Twain Fan Convention.

However, the poor economy had discouraged many from making the trip, he said.

Sessions, who was among the 30 fans at this year's convention, said he's attended for the past seven years.

It's also been seven years since Twain has released an album.

Tracy Hautanen, manager of the Shania Twain Centre, acknowledged the singer's recent inactivity may have had

"We were hoping for more people (to attend the convention) but of course, the numbers are low for a few reasons and then this is a quieter time.

"So we know when things pick up with her, our numbers will pick up again."

Despite Internet rumours that were circulating earlier this year, it doesn't appear Twain will be releasing an album any time soon.

A spokesman for Twain's label says a new record from the singer is still "nowhere in sight."

The 43-year-old hasn't released an album of new material since 2002's Up!

And yet in an often fickle music industry where artists can be forgotten in the time it takes to download a new ring-tone, Twain's fans and peers are proving extraordinarily patient in waiting for new material from the singer.

Twain, apparently, appreciates it.

In a June 12 blog posting, Twain apologized to her fans for her delay in creating new music, writing: "I realize I'm not holding up very well on my end of the relationship!"

But Twain, who has always shunned the spotlight when it comes to her personal life, has kept an even lower profile since splitting from her husband and producer Mutt Lange.

In June, she wrote about the difficult time she's endured, and discussed trying to keep her emotions in check for the benefit of her young son.

And she also described a creatively fruitful period that followed the "personal crisis."

"Since then, I've been inspired by my pain to write and use writing as a therapy through the suffering," Twain wrote. "I truly wouldn't wish this on anybody as a means to get inspired, but it's been a productive period with so much emotion trying to find its way out. "

"However, there is no telling how long it will take me to actually finish these songs and record them so they can get out to you."

Rumours swirled on the Internet earlier this year that Twain would, in fact, have a new album out in the spring, and then the fall.

But her label representative says there definitely will not be a new studio album from Twain out this year.

Tracy Hautenan has posted the following about this year's Fan Con.

My Seventh Annual Fan Convention Review

Everytime I type "seventh" I just can't believe it has been that long. As much as I joke about "another convention already" I have to admit that the time between conventions flies by, and so do the conventions. I guess that is what a lot of laughter and good times brings.

With the difficult economic times that every country is facing, I worried about how our friends would be able to come together in Timmins again this year. Although our numbers were low, I was amazed at how everyone worked together to ensure that they could be apart of the event. There were car pools set up, there were rooms shared, there were sponsored registrations........THERE WERE FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS!! When we set out with the idea of a fan convention many years ago, we hoped that friendships among people with common interests would transpire, but I never dreamed that those bonds would be so strong. Many that could not be here were with us online, and on the phone which really showed that the support from around the world is there......it made the convention awesome!! Thanks again for your continued support.

So, the first fans to arrive were Chris, Betsy, and Debbie. I knew the route they were driving because I travel it many times a year. I called on several occasions to see how far along they were in their travels and sure enough I could tell them what they should be passing next.......I think it may have freaked Chris out a little as he asked me if I had them on a radar map or something!! They arrived in Timmins on Monday evening and I was able to visit with them a bit upon their arrival......so for me........the convention started at that moment. I had received an email from Matty a few days before that as he was finalizing his travel plans and he was asking about the cab service from the airport for the flights that arrive at midnight. I told him there was usually at least one cab there and to go directly from the plane to the cab driver and claim him......before claiming his luggage.

However, after seeing Chris, Betsy and Debbie for a few hours, I felt more in the convention mood and I decided I would surprise Dot and Matty by picking them up at the airport. I called Andrea and told her my plans and she was excited to join me. So we headed to the airport at 11:30pm and as we drove the quiet road to the airport (the airport is the only thing at the end of the road) we were passed by a cab and 3 other vehicles. "Damn.....we missed the plane" was all I could say...........we laughed as we imagined Dot and Matty passing us on the road as we raced to surprise them. When we got to the airport there wasn't a sole in site. We found a security guard and asked if the last plane had landed........he said....."no, that flight should be here in about 40 minutes." So we made ourselves comfortable and waited.

Sure enough, when the plane landed a very tired Matty was off the plane and heading for the exit of the airport to find a cab......but a very tired Dot spotted us sitting by the luggage claim and stopped him in his tracks. They were extremely tired so we got them to the hotel and wished them a good nights sleep.........we were a little tired too!!

Tuesday morning it was off to the Centre for another day of work. Just after the doors opened, all 5 that were already in town were in the gift shop showing their support for the Centre. We were really excited to see Chris because we knew he needed a new wardrobe and the ladies in the store were more then happy to help him select it!!

More soon.............

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course no one was allowed into the exhibit area on Tuesday, some of them went for a walk around Gillies Lake, and Andrea and I took Debbie with us while we did our last minute running around for the convention.

Wednesday saw the arrival of Barry, Charlie, Bianca, Richard and Clover. I think Barry was in town late Tuesday!?! We participated in some pre-convention activites with those that were in town during the day on Wednesday and had lots of laughs!!

I have to say that I was really looking forward to meeting Clover and before they arrived I told everyone to greet her with a line from a Shania song..........."Come on Over".........."We're Havin a Party"...........stuff like that. Well, I accidently stole Debbie's line, and a few others attempted to use their lines but in all the idea was a real flop!! (But the attempt was made?) Clover was a real sport and I really hope she comes back again next year...........she can even bring Richard with her

Of course everyone was at the Centre Thursday Morning bright and early, and we still managed to sneak a few convention things by them without them noticing. Reporters were on hand to conduct interviews and everyone had wonderful things to say when interviewed. The support that the STC recieves is just awesome!! I was glad Richard was at the Centre for a bit that day because he typically doesn't make the Meet and Greet in the evening.............strange!

Better get back to work................
