Shania interview on Thursday & hosts "The Current" on Friday - Listen!

Will guest host Canadian radio show 'The Current'

By Etan Vlessing

Jan 6, 2010, 12:51 PM ET

TORONTO -- Before Shania Twain guest judges "American Idol" auditions later this month, the country star on Friday will grab a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. radio mic in Toronto to interview Queen Rania of Jordan.

Twain is to guest host the CBC's "The Current" radio show and is slated to ask the Jordanian queen about her global charity for underprivileged youth, 1Goal.

Twain, who experienced childhood poverty growing up in northern Ontario, as part of her radio gig will also visit an inner-city Toronto school to perform for students and preach help for young talent.

Twain last week carried the Olympic torch in front of thousands in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario, ahead of the Vancouver/Whistler Games, which kick off Feb. 12.

All of this is starting to make much more sense now. First the Idol gig, now this. Music Shania is done; business Shania is here. A new career path has started. Interesting.

Charity has been a calling of Shania Twain's for many years. I do not see anything that has changed in this regard with this interview - remember these two ladies attended that NY shindig recently for the most influential women in the world.

This is a great way to kick off the new year. Queen Rania devotes much of her time to charity, and I'm glad to see that Shania will interview her, then perform at an inner-city school. I guess we'll see photos in the news. Good for Shania. She could be resting in Switzerland, drinking hot chocolate. She is out there making a difference and setting a good example to her son about 'giving back' to the community.

Shania raises money through her concerts to donate to food banks as well as giving awareness. And let's not forget, her Febereze Scentstories campaign also helped with this cause. She talked about her bouts of hunger in the Cityline interview. In the words of Marilyn Dennis, "If anyone can do it, Shania can".

Yup she is lazy and not really motivated but no she isn't retired and there will be an album before she is 60 yearold lol!!

It would be the biggest scam of all if she has no plans for music but yet said she is working towards a completed album for the fans.

So no doubt that she isn't or doesn't have the passion as other artists and is not too motivated but she isn't retired and I think that is very clear.

I listened to most of the show this morning as I was getting ready for work. I'm happy to see that Shania is working on giving back to the community. Shania grew up very poor and she clearly wants to assist kids who are in need. Like she said, her family had their heat cut off many times (I can only imagine what that would be like in freezing, freezing Timmins) and she said that probably is illegal in these current times. There is much more social assistance intervention now, and it is good to see Shania is launching her own charity and working on that. Stayed tuned to see if we get photos of Shania performing at a school later!

Shania Twain to host national CBC Radio program

Millionaire superstar tackles the issue of being a poor child

Posted By Len Gillis

Photo supplied by Jeri Brown, CBC Radio.

CBC Radio has confirmed that Shania Twain will be hosting the flagship morning news and current affairs program The Current. The national CBC program which usually tackles national and international issues has invited Twain to sit in the host chair on Friday, a spot normally reserved for other well-known journalists and interviewers. Twain will be promoting a new national children's' charity.

In an interview today to promote Friday's program, host Anna Maria Tremonti, outlined Twain's superstar musical accomplishments.

"There is another side to Shania Twain," said Tremonti. "On you are probably less familiar with. That is the side that really struck me," Tremonti said of a meeting with Twain last fall.

"It became clear she has deep empathy for underprivileged kids who all too often fall through the cracks," said Tremonti.

"Shania Twain's passion for helping kids in need has prompted her to start a charity called Shania Kids Can. She will be the exploring issues affecting underprivileged children when she hosts The Current tomorrow."

At that point Tremonti introduced Twain as her in-studio guest and Twain admitted it will be the first time she has hosted a radio program.

Twain admitted that she had difficulties in her childhood, that "she really never opened up

"Well I have been involved a little bit over the years, especially through touring, with food banks, donating to food banks, raising money. I think I associated more publicly, or opened up a bit more publicly about being hungry at times as a kid. But really never went beyond that explaining really how I grew up, up north, and the other struggles that surrounded the whole situation. So it wasn't just about not having enough food, although that was often the big part of it." Twain explained.

She said the reason she decided the create the new charity is because she doesn't think other children should have to go what she went through.

WAS IT REALLY NECESSARY?

Twain said she has no doubt her parents loved her enormously and tried to do their best, but she wonders if things could have been different if she was raised today.

"This is a bit of a mystery that I am trying to unravel at this point now in my life, looking back and peeling back the layers and saying 'Okay, what happened?' Was it really necessary for us to go through all these lows, growing up?"

Twain said she suspects part of the situation might have been the fact her parents were too proud to accept handouts or welfare. She said her father Jerry Twain, who she described as very bright, talented and capable, was determined "not to be another native on welfare."

Twain said there are a lot of things she doesn't have answers to and she is not placing any blame, but her parents were working poor people who had to make hard choices for such things as which bills got paid. Sometimes it would be the phone bill, she said, other times it would be putting gas in the car or spending money at the Laundromat.

"It was just this endless chain of trying to get by all the time and live in a society of the'haves' when you're a 'have not'."

She recalled the difficulty of being a young person who felt humiliated by poverty.

"I would say that was the most difficult part of growing up poor," said Twain. "You were embarrassed by it. You were humiliated by the fact that you went to school , you know, maybe your clothes weren't clean, you hadn't been able to do the laundry yet; going to school without a lunch, or a makeshift lunch just to save face, you know, stale bread or you know whatever you could put in your bag, just to say you had a bag," Twain remembered.

"You instinctively try to protect yourself from being embarrassed and being identified as somebody who is poor or has less. You don't want to stand out in any way," she said.

The Current will be broadcast in Timmins on FM 96.1 tomorrow at 8:37 a.m. immediately following the Morning North program.

Twain recalls impoverished past to help charity

Last Updated: Thursday, January 7, 2010 | 1:06 PM ET

Shania Twain talks about her childhood on CBC Radio One's The Current on Thursday. She'll host the show Friday. (CBC)

Canadian country pop singer Shania Twain has started a charity called Shania Kids Can that she hopes will open opportunities for talented boys and girls from underprivileged backgrounds.

Speaking on CBC Radio's The Current on Thursday, Twain said she relates to underprivileged children because she grew up poor herself.

Twain will host The Current on Friday, when she will speak more about her plans for Shania Kids Can. She will also interview Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, who created 1GOAL, a charity that aims to reach the 72 million children worldwide who do not have access to education.

Twain said in an interview that she began singing as a teenager for $25 or $50 an engagement, money that immediately went to the family finances.

"We went in and out of different phases, and I'm sure that's what's happening to many families," she said. "My dad had a job from time to time, and we could shop for groceries every week, but sometimes we'd go for a month without shopping," she said.

Twain, who was born in Windsor, Ont., and grew up in Timmins, said her family was not troubled or abusive, just poor. She recalled washing clothes by hand because they couldn't afford the laundromat and having the heat turned off because her parents had to choose which bill they would pay — the heat or the electricity.

'I've reached a point I never imagined, and luck played a big role in that.'—Shania Twain

"It's an endless chain of trying to get by and living in a world of haves when you were a have-not," said Twain, now 44.

"You were humiliated by the fact you went to school and your clothes weren't clean or you didn't have a lunch."

Twain loves her hometown and has great memories of growing up there, she said. She was in Timmins on New Year's Day to carry the Olympic torch as part of the national relay leading up to the Winter Games in Vancouver next month.

Twain said she wants to make a difference in the lives of today's children.

She said growing up poor "taught me to be resilient, to be patient, that life has its ups and downs," Twain said. "I don't regret it — it made me strong — but I don't want anyone else to have go through it."

Twain, who achieved international success 15 years ago with The Woman In Me, said her achievements owe something to her background, but a lot to chance.

"I've reached a point I never imagined, and luck played a big role in that, and it's a shame if we leave luck to do it," she said.

Her Shania Kids Can charity aims to give underprivileged children the chance to play music or take lessons their families could not otherwise afford. She intends to be closely involved, visiting schools and finding out how to make a difference in children's lives.

The queen of country pop and the queen of Jordan surely will have lots in common. Man, they both feel like women, we’re sure.

Shania Twain interviews Queen Rania of Jordan Friday on CBC Radio’s The Current.

Twain will be a guest-host for an exploration of the challenges of confronting neglect and the importance of fostering young talent in underprivileged communities. She will speak with Queen Rania about the monarch's charitable works in an effort to provide education for poor children around the world.

On Thursday, Anna-Maria Tremonti, host of The Current, interviewed Twain about her own experiences with child poverty.

Shania starts charity

Twain hosts CBC Radio show today

Posted By Wayne Snider, The Daily Press

Fresh off her gig of carrying the Olympic torch in Timmins, Shania Twain's career path is taking a couple of new turns: Journalist and philanthropist.

The country-pop superstar diva will grab a microphone today, but instead of singing she will be interviewing Queen Rania of Jordan. Twain will be the guest host on CBC Radio's program The Current.

Twain is scheduled to question the Jordanian queen about her global charity for underprivileged youth, 1Goal.

Twain went from a small-town girl in Northern Ontario to an international superstar and she reinvented country music along the way.

She is no stranger to the topic of underprivileged youth, as Twain experienced poverty while growing up.

Twain said in an interview on CBC radio yesterday that she began singing as a teenager for $25 or $50 an engagement, money that immediately went to the family finances.

"We went in and out of different phases, and I'm sure that's what's happening to many families," she said. "My dad had a job from time to time, and we could shop for groceries every week, but sometimes we'd go for a month without shopping."

Twain said her family was not troubled or abusive, just poor. She recalled washing clothes by hand because they couldn't afford the laundromat and having the heat turned off because her parents had to choose which bill they would pay — the heat or the electricity.

"I've reached a point I never imagined, and luck played a big role in that," Twain told CBC Radio.

"It's an endless chain of trying to get by and living in a world of haves when you were a have-not.

"You were humiliated by the fact you went to school and your clothes weren't clean or you didn't have a lunch."

Twain wants to make a difference in the lives of children.

She said being poor while growing up "taught me to be resilient, to be patient, that life has its ups and downs. I don't regret it — it made me strong — but I don't want anyone else to have go through it."

Part of her radio gig will also have Twain visit an inner-city Toronto school to perform for students and preach help for young talent.

Twain said her passion for helping kids in need has prompted her to start a charity called Shania Kids Can. Today, she'll explore issues affecting underprivileged children when she hosts The Current.

Her Shania Kids Can charity aims to give underprivileged children the chance to play music or take lessons their families could not otherwise afford.

Twain said she intends to be closely involved with the organization. Her plans currently include visiting schools and finding out how to make a difference in children's lives.
