Report: Shania Twain to Announce Las Vegas Residency at Press Conference

Shania Twain is making a big announcement Wednesday, June 8th, in Nashville that could have something to do with a possible residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The announcement will be made live at 3:00 p.m. ET at ShaniaTwain.comfrom the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. A press conference at Caesars Palace in Vegas has been called at the exact same time, with an undisclosed special guest appearing via closed circuit TV.

According to reports from Las Vegas Weekly and Shania Twain News on Twitter, Shania is expected to announce a headlining show called Still the One at Caesars Palace starting December 1st, 2012. Of course, that information remains unconfirmed with anyone in Shania's camp. Her OWN docu-series, Why Not? with Shania Twain, will wrap up with the finale episode Sunday night, June 12th. Shania's new single from the show, "Today Is Your Day," is now available at iTunes and will be hitting the airwaves soon.

LOL, I completely forgot that I was the one who started this thread. But I knew that Shania would end up in Vegas sooner or later.

I'll never go there myself, so I hope they release a DVD of her show. I'd love to see it.

Shania Twain Reveals New Las Vegas Show

Country superstar Shania Twain is launching a new show in Las Vegas and tells ET's Nancy O'Dell that she'll be sharing the same stage as Celine Dion.

Shania said she's thrilled to be doing a show at the Colosseum where Celine has a multi-year contract to perform -- and this will give her the chance to regularly interact with her fans. She is set to perform 60 shows a year, beginning Dec. 1, 2012.

"Just the fact that it's an opportunity to reconnect with the fans again, with the public. I love the interaction with the people. And you know, you can't do that any other way, unless you're onstage. So it's a chance to celebrate again with the public."

The Grammy Award winning artist said that unlike going on the road, performing in Las Vegas will allow her to spend more time with her son Eja and other family members.

In the interview, Shania also discusses how she's dealt with the voice condition dysphonia, which she says was triggered by anxiety after years of repressing fears and emotions. But she tells Nancy she now feels like she's in a very good place in life. "I'm at a very good place. I'm at a very, very good place. I've come such a long way and I'm very grateful for the whole journey, really."

Shania already revealed to ET details of her painful breakup and divorce, as well as her marriage earlier this year to current husband Frederic Thiebaud. For more footage of her fabulous wedding, be sure to catch the season finale of her reality show "Why Not? With Shania Twain," this Sunday at 10 p.m. on OWN.

Shania Twain announces engagement at Caesars Palace in 2012

By Mike Weatherford
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Posted: Jun. 8, 2011 | 12:00 p.m.
Updated: Jun. 8, 2011 | 12:19 p.m.

If you have waited seven years or more to see Shania Twain perform live again, you can wait another year and a half. Promoters announced today the country-pop star of the '90s will start a regular engagement at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Dec. 1, 2012.

The announcement is timed with a flurry of new visibility for the singer, including a new single, a reality show on the Oprah Winfrey Network and appearing with Taylor Swift on today's CMT Music Awards.

The reality show "Why Not? With Shania Twain" chronicles the singer's battle to overcome the vocal condition dysphonia. She attributes her vocal problems to stress over her divorce from Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the record producer who helmed the singer's career and signature hits such as "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" and "Any Man of Mine." (She has since remarried.)

In a Nashville news conference to announce the engagement, Twain said both the gradual loss of her vocal skills and regaining them has been "very progressive."

"It's not very much different from an athlete with an injury," she told reporters.

Twain will become a recurring headliner in the schedule at the Colosseum, starting during the National Finals Rodeo week of 2012. She will do 60 shows a year in a two-year contract. A promotional pre-sale for American Express card holders begins later today, with sales for the general public beginning June 19.

Twain's first Las Vegas concert was in early 1999, and she returned for another arena date in late 2003.

In the press room of the Billboard Music Awards of 2003, the Canadian star was asked if she would consider a Las Vegas headliner deal. "If I ever did that, it would be because I'm old or something," she answered.

Her remark drew an audible response, to which she replied, "What was so controversial about that?"

She'll be invisible to 99% of fans alot longer than Dec. 1, 2012. Not many will go to Vegas. Let's hope a new album comes out before then!

Shania Twain Lands Vegas Show Deal

Shania Twain is Las Vegas-bound!

The country star and new author is going the way of Céline Dion, landing a residency show on the Vegas strip.

"I will let my imagination run wild," she told reporters Wednesday at a press conference to announce the deal. "I'm going to go nuts creatively."

The show, titled Still The One, will open Dec. 1, 2012, and run for at least two years at Caesars Palace's Colosseum showroom.

Committing to the series of shows – as well as releasing a book, she says – were big steps in helping her recover from a tumultuous time that included getting divorced and losing her voice.

"It's been a healing year," says Twain, who married Frédéric Thiébaud in January.

"I've learned how to commit myself and put that into healing, instead of fear and anxiety, which is a big turnaround."

Shania Twain to resume career with Vegas residency

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Country star Shania Twain will end her self-imposed career hiatus by starting a two-year residency in Las Vegas in December 2012, she said Wednesday.

The Grammy-winning Canadian, who largely stepped away from public life seven years ago to focus on her crumbling marriage, will dust off her big hits for fans at the 4,300-seat Colosseum arena in Caesar's Palace.

The show, dubbed "Shania: Still the One," will kick off on December 1, 2012. She will be the first country music headliner at the venue.

The announcement follows a TV documentary series and a book in which Twain, 45, chronicled the demise of her 14-year marriage and fears that she would never sing again because of emotional pain and an ailment called dysphonia, in which muscles squeeze the voice box.

Twain's 1997 album "Come on Over" was a huge crossover hit, boosting her worldwide album sales to more than 75 million, but her last studio album was the 2002 release "Up!"

She walked away from her career to work on her marriage to her reclusive producer and co-writer Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The marriage fell apart in 2008 when Lange and Twain's best friend fell in love with each other.

"I figured mentally that I would never sing again, Twain told Oprah Winfrey in early May in her first TV interview for five years. "My fears and anxieties throughout my whole life have been slowly squeezing my voice."

Twain's decision to resume her career will be revealed in Sunday's final episode of the OWN cable channel series "Why Not?".

She is also expected to release her first single in six years "Today (is Your Day)."

Come on over: Shania Twain to return to stage with two-year residency in Vegas

By Nick Patch, The Canadian Press – Thu, 9 Jun, 2011

Shania Twain is ending her lengthy hiatus from performing with a two-year residency at Caesars Palace beginning in 2012, and she says she plans to seek advice from another Canadian diva who has found success in Las Vegas.

"I will call Celine (Dion) — somebody should warn her now," Twain joked during a news conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday.

"I think Celine will be very insightful and very helpful."

A Caesars Palace residency proved hugely successful for Dion, with a five-year stint at the Colosseum that ended in 2007 and a return engagement that began in March.

Twain is likely banking that a Sin City stint will give a similar boost to her career, which has stalled in recent years as she recovered from the breakup of her marriage to hit-making producer Robert (Mutt) Lange.

Wednesday's announcement is the latest step in a carefully orchestrated comeback for Twain, the notoriously private 45-year-old who in recent months has stepped back into the spotlight with a reality TV series, a revealing autobiography and now the announcement of her Vegas engagement.

Tickets, which range from $55-250, were set to go on sale Wednesday evening at the exact moment Twain took the stage at the CMT Awards.

Aside from the opportunity to perform for rapt audiences at a glitzy venue, stars have also flocked to Vegas because the residency format is an appealing alternative to the often-arduous process of touring, and would allow Twain to remain in one place with her nine-year-old son, Eja.

"I'm beyond excited," said a beaming Twain, who will perform 60 shows per year beginning Dec. 1, 2012.

"I feel like I'm on the top of the world. Honestly, I feel like I've climbed a very giant mountain and I'm just standing right on top with my arms open wide.

"This is really beautiful, really lovely, I'm very excited today."

Still, the Vegas gigs could provide a challenge for the Timmins, Ont., country-pop superstar.

She hasn't released a new album since 2002's "Up," and not only has she strayed from the stage in recent years, but Twain also claims that the painful breakup of her marriage caused her to lose her voice.

She said Wednesday that she's seen "great progress" with her vocal problem, and representatives from the Colosseum at Caesars Palace pledged to create the best possible conditions for Twain's voice, pointing out that the venue featured a micro-climate system to protect performers' vocal cords.

For her part, Twain said she wasn't concerned about whether her seemingly fragile voice would endure her demanding Vegas schedule.

"I've never missed a show ever in my career — any vocal performance ever — and the show did go on, sometimes against what was better for me," she said.

"I don't want to do that this time. The show will go on but this time around, I'm going to feel confident and good about it."

In fact, the singer — looking tan and healthy in a sleeveless white dress — could hardly contain her excitement during Wednesday's gathering.

"I wish I could just get started tomorrow," she enthused.

"Today is a turning point for me. I feel as though I'm about to step into a world of endless creative possibilities and that is so exciting for a songwriter, for an artist, to take songs and translate them into such a magical place, on a magical platform.

"So this will be like no other platform I've ever been on before with my songs. It's a whole new beginning, I think, for the old music, if you will."

But there will be new music in addition to old.

On June 12, Twain will release the new single "Today is Your Day" — the first song she's written solo in six years.

"I'm very excited about the new song. I was petrified of writing a new song without Mutt — a whole new world for me. It had been many, many years since I had written by myself, so that was new and scary.

"The song, really, every day cheered me up so much I thought, well, maybe I should share it."

Twain says that penning the new track has revived her creativity.

"It's really set me off ready to get back into the studio. I've written a whole bunch of other things over the course of this year and I absolutely will make another record soon. And I will be making it over the summer," she said, before noting that the new material might not be released in time for her Vegas gigs.

"I am not putting any pressure on myself as to when it will be ready."

As for Twain's own vision for her Vegas show? Well, that too is yet to be determined.

"I decided I would only begin dreaming now about what it will be like, and I will now let my imagination run wild," she said.

"It's early stages, it's going to be a process and I really don't know what you can expect as far as anything specific."

Still, her excitement to march onto the Vegas strip was palpable.

"I am in the top-class company of the world as far as performers go, as far as production value goes and production support, the venue itself," Twain gushed.

"This is a dream for any performing artist. What more could I ask for? This is — I don't even want to use the word 'opportunity,' although it is an opportunity and I thank you for that, but it's more than that.

"It's just an exceptional gift and that is truly how I feel about it."

Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas!

Not much from The Associated Press.

– Wed Jun 8, 3:45 pm ET

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Shania Twain is headed to Las Vegas.

The country superstar announced a headlining residency on Wednesday. It will be at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace starting Dec. 1, 2012. Her new show is called "Shania: Still The One" and will feature all of her biggest hits, including "You're Still The One" and "Forever And For Always".

Twain had been out of the spotlight since the mid-2000s. Since that time she has gone through a number of personal struggles including the break-up of her marriage, losing her voice and a fear of returning to the stage. She has documented her comeback throughout her OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network show "Why Not? With Shania Twain?"

Twain is the best-selling female country artist of all time. She has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide.

IT'S OFFICIAL! Shania Twain Is Heading To Vegas!

Another devastating blow to her worldwide audience. Considering Shania thought that Vegas was not versatile enough for her, she still went ahead and accepted it. We might as well give up on the idea of seeing her on the road ever again as Shania and her management don't have the fans' best interests at heart and are once again purely focusing on the North American market and those with money. I like to try and refrain from negative comments, but after this surprise announcement I don't see why as fans we should pretend to be happy (as an amazing opportunity as it is) when we're clearly not.

Shania Twain Can't Wait to See Her Fans in Las Vegas
Superstar Announces Concerts at Caesars Palace in December 2012
Shania Twain

Shania Twain will come on over to Las Vegas in December 2012, launching her two-year residency at Caesars Palace. The country superstar, who has sold 75 million albums worldwide, revealed details of the concert series during a press conference at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville on Wednesday afternoon (June 8).

"I just can't wait," she said. "I wish I could just get started tomorrow. You know, today is a big turning point for me. I feel as though I'm about to step into a world of endless, creative possibilities. That is so exciting for a songwriter, for an artist, to take songs and translate them into such a magical place on a magical platform. This will be like no other platform I've ever been on before with my songs. It's a whole new beginning, I think, for the old music, if you will."

During the event, Twain fielded questions from reporters in Nashville as well as Las Vegas via satellite. In this partial transcript from the press conference, she talks about rediscovering her voice, releasing new music and reconnecting with her fans.

So much of your series on OWN has been about finding your voice again. What has been the time frame between finding your voice and this decision to play in Las Vegas?

Well, the losing of my voice has been very progressive and gaining my voice back has also been very progressive. Today I'm speaking very well. It's very open. I'm very happy with the way it's coming out. I've made a lot of progress in baby steps through the course of the series. I've seen great progress. I've gotten to the bottom of it and I'm addressing it. That is what sharing it was all about -- addressing the fact that not only do I have a problem, but it's scaring me and I really want to face those fears. So, sharing it with the public has been a very big part of addressing it, and it's helping such a great deal just to talk about it.

And I'm singing more. I force myself into a lot of vocal scenarios in the series. I know I can do it. I've proven it to myself. And now after visiting with experts, it's just a matter of following through with their advice and getting the therapy that I need. So it's not really much different than an athlete with an injury.

You may not realize it, or you may, but most vocalists do go through vocal problems and have a "the show must go on" sort of theory. I've never missed a show, ever, in my career -- any vocal performance, ever. And the show did go on, sometimes against what was better for me. I don't wanna do that this time. The show will go on, but this time around, I'm going to feel confident and good about it.

You've been all over the world on tour. What does it mean to you to become the next Las Vegas headliner?

I am among the top-class company of the world as far as performers go, as far as production value goes and production support, the venue itself, the [concert promoters] at AEG. This is a dream for any performing artist. What more could I ask for? ... I don't even want use the word "opportunity," although it is an opportunity, and I thank you for that, but it's more than that. It's just an exceptional gift and that is truly how I feel about it.

How did the partnership begin? What is the show going to be like?

I needed to see the venue for myself empty, hear the sounds, speak in there, walk around in there and really think very deeply about making the commitment -- if I could do it, if I was up for the challenge. I felt very good when I left. I was still unsure. I still had things to go through, through the series, to find out what was really going on. In fact, after I left Vegas, Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville was my next stop for seeing specialists and determining what was going on.

To answer the second half of that question, "What is the show going to be like. What can we expect?" From today on, from this moment on, I decided that I would only begin dreaming now about what it would be like. And I will now let my imagination run wild. So it's in the early stages. It's going to be a process and I really don't know what you can expect as far as anything specific, other than the fact that now my dreams are unleashed and creativity is unleashed.

And I'm going to make the most of this extraordinary platform because you can't take this type of environment -- as far as sound and lighting and expertise and crew -- on the road with you. Nobody can. So, making the most of that has really given me a huge freedom and I'm going to go nuts! (laughs) Anything's possible at Caesars!

Have you had a chance to talk to Celine Dion about her experience in Las Vegas?

I have not yet sat down with my list of questions. I would love to sit down and do that. I will call Celine. Somebody should warn her now. (laughs) The last time I spoke to Celine, it was about our babies because her first son, René-Charles, and my Eja are basically the same age. So we got on the phone and talked about all the little hiccups and the first baby syndrome and all of that sort of thing. And that's the last time we actually had a conversation about anything personal. And I consider this adventure very personal. Of course it's professional but this is where the worlds cross and combine. And I think Celine will be very insightful and very helpful.

What has the last year been like for you?

It's been a healing year for me. ... I didn't set any time restraints on myself. I set out to heal. I wrote the autobiography. I did the series. I explored Vegas. I committed myself to things. And I think it was a learning and growing time, which I guess is all part of healing. Committing myself in the first place to do the series and to release the book was a very big step in almost forcing myself to stick with something. It's like going on a diet or getting in shape. You do it with a partner or you do it with a buddy. I did it with the public, and they held my hand all the way through it.

And I did it with song. I wrote a song to cheer me on through the whole process. It was all very real and very genuine. It was a motivational exercise for me that I lived in real time and shared it. That forced me to do it. So, committing yourself is a very big part. I've learned how to commit myself and put that into healing instead of fear and anxiety, which is a big turnaround.

Do you feel competition among other productions in Las Vegas?

My whole career is a series of competition after competition from the side of the industry. I'm not personally a very competitive person in that regard. I make my music, I do my thing and I put it out there. I'm not counting or anything like that. It takes too much energy to do that, so I leave that up to the industry and I just worry about doing what I do. ... Also, the touring industry and the radio industry are so highly competitive. If you survive that, I think you can survive Vegas. Trust me. (laughs) That is not even something that I've given much thought, to be honest.

Can you please tell us about your new song, "Today Is Your Day?"

Yeah, I'm very excited about the new song. And the new song was a surprise. I didn't plan on it. I was petrified of writing a new song without Mutt [her musical partner and ex-husband]. A whole new world for me. It had been many, many years since I had written by myself so that was new and scary. The song, really every day, cheered me up so much. I thought, "Well, maybe I should share it in the series." [Producers] Nathan Chapman and David Foster are both involved. I was very involved myself with the production of it. I enjoyed it. I'm excited about the new song and it's really set me off, you know. I'm ready to get back into the studio. So I've written a whole bunch of other things over the course of this year as well, and I absolutely will make another record soon. And I will be making it over the summer. I'm not putting any pressure on myself as to when it will be ready. Whether it will be before Dec. 1, 2012, I don't know.

Will people be able to hear new music during the Las Vegas shows?

Anything I've ever done live onstage has always evolved from the beginning to the end. I think it's wise to always leave some room for that. So if there was a new song that comes along, then I would certainly adapt that into the show. I wouldn't want to leave that out, so I will leave room for new music to come in as it comes. ... I'm just looking forward to contact with the fans again. I mean, I'm enjoying this so much today -- just sitting around talking with all of you. And I know this is not like the "fan crowd," but I just enjoy the contact. Being able to communicate with the fans directly during the show has always been one of my greatest pleasures. That's probably what I'm looking forward to the most, above and beyond the performance and the spectacle of everything. It's just the direct contact, one-on-one with the fans. That venue is going to make it as intimate as it can possibly be.

NASHVILLE SKYLINE: Shania Twain Heads to Las Vegas: Is it the Promised Lland or the Elephants' Graveyard?

Sin City Is Becoming the Repository of Superstar Music Careers

(NASHVILLE SKYLINE is a column by CMT/CMT.com Editorial Director Chet Flippo.)

The news this week that retired country superstar Shania Twain is officially coming out of retirement was not totally unexpected. Reports have been circulating for years that she's been recording, and her recent very frank autobiography was a signal that she is coming back in a big way.

What was a bit unexpected was the news that she has picked Las Vegas to be the site for her re-emergence. She could still command premiere prices at any venue in the world. There is -- save Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift -- no female country artist with her ability to sell tickets and to draw audiences.

But Shania is going to spell Celine Dion during her vacations from Caesars Palace. There is ample precedent for that. Country music has a long history with Las Vegas. Witness Garth Brooks' current successful run at the Wynn. Steve Wynn, who booked Garth into his hotel, has a long history of bringing country music to Vegas, going back to the days when he ran the Golden Nugget and booked the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kenny Rogers and Barbara Mandrell.

In country music history, Hank Williams gave Vegas one try and bombed. He played the Last Frontier Casino (only the second casino built on the Strip), and he was drunk and was not what the gamblers expected in the way of high-class entertainment.

But Elvis Presley went to Vegas and revolutionized pop and country music there and drew audiences in unprecedented numbers. Elvis' Vegas runs from 1969 to 1976 may have ultimately killed him. Las Vegas certainly resurrected his career but may have led to a downspin in his lifestyle with his new tinfoil on the windows -- shutting out the world -- syndrome and the endless pills and the out-of-control bodyguards and the parades of young girls. When Elvis first opened in Vegas in 1969, he was derided as a sellout. Now everyone -- from Elton John to Eagles to Paul McCartney -- plays the Strip.

With Shania's move, it's confirmed that -- at least for artists of her stature and status -- Oprah's OWN network and a Las Vegas room are the safest and most lucrative avenues for the future.

Vegas in many ways is wonderful for artists as well as fans. It's safe. It's convenient. The artist tours in one spot for weeks on end and the audience comes to them. As with Elvis, they need never leave the hotel. Everything is brought to them. The money is good.

For a music fan -- who has the money -- it's a great way to see a favorite artist. You're staying in the hotel. You go down to the showroom for showtime, to your reserved seat -- with a comped drink or two first.

Unlike at a concert in the real world, you don't have to find a parking garage that isn't already full, pay your $50 to park, walk several blocks in the stifling heat past loitering thugs and threatening panhandlers, struggle with the surging crowds and thread your way through the Barney Fife-security forces at the gates, try to find your seats, pay 10 or 12 bucks for a cup of beer after a long wait in line, try to ignore the yahoos around you who will emit loud whistles and cries for "Whipping Post!" throughout the night and will yell "Hell, yeah!" in your ear after every song.

So, at a certain point in your life, a Vegas show begins to make sense. It's an effortless and pleasant (expensive? so what?) way to go to a musical event. The show is actually a pleasure. The show is the show. It's what you wanted. After the concert, leaving the venue is not a stampede. You don't have to hike several blocks back to your car past the thugs and panhandlers and wait for a damn long time to get out of the parking garage because no one will let your car pull into the damn exit line.

And, after the show, you have choices. Go up to your room and order room service. Or go to one of the many bars or restaurants in the hotel. And there are some good ones. Vegas has figured that out very well. I've seen the Garth Brooks Vegas show twice and greatly enjoyed it. In that relatively small room, it's an intimate experience you would never find with Garth in an arena. Brooks opens up in ways you may not expect and presents a warm and expressive and sometimes revealing evening.

If -- like me -- you read as a child numerous adventure stories set in the African jungles and savannahs, then you know all about the elephants' graveyard. That was the hallowed spot where majestic old elephants would make their way to die once the feeling of death came upon them. That's common to animals. I've seen it in my dogs and cats. When they sense they are dying, they go off in private to gracefully fade away in peace and privacy.

For the mighty elephants, the Elephants' Graveyard was the mythical secret death site. Great white hunters went off in search of the fabled Elephants' Graveyard, where there would be fortunes in ivory.

Does ivory today equal musical copyrights and recordings? Is Vegas your place of rebirth as an artist or your final (metaphorical) resting place? Does artistic creativity not happen in Vegas, much less stay in Vegas? Is music ultimately the property of the people with the Escalades and the black Amex cards and the prime seats for the primo Vegas shows?

Vegas is not a family friendly place and even the strong can stray with all sorts of temptations coming at them. Two years is a long time to be there and living and breathing that city day in and day out may soon feel like a trap when you are a global performing artist. I found this disappointing that Shania is limiting herself to Vegas and releasing new material as it comes. I get the impression that as hurt as she is, she may be hiding other issues that made her consider Las Vegas and a snail like ascent to the top post Mutt. She admits to crippling insecurity, but in some respects she has gone from a very strict performing and writing schedule with Mutt to a more self indulgent, sensual and molasses like work flow. This may be hard to reconcile for fans who are accustomed to a Shania who released a generous amount of music and tour her butt off all over the world. I do not know how well the new Shania is going down with fans; she has obviously changed and is no longer the spunky, generous and physical performer that she used to be. Age will do that to you and it is rare to have performers like Madonna, Cher and Tina who still rock the house in their middle age years. Now I see why they are still popular and I respect them for still holding it down like when they were 35.

Cher has been headlining Las Vegas for three years and Celine Dion for five years and returned to do three years.  It did not ruin their careers.  I don't think its a bad thing at all.  The only thing I don't like about is its just in Las Vegas, but I got a feeling I will be going.  For die-hard Cher, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain fan, it sucks.  Its only 60 shows a year, so there is a good chance Shania might do perform in other places in the world.  You never know.

It's wishful thinking that Shania may tour the world on her downtime from Vegas.  I hope that I am wrong, but let's face it: she's a newlywed, has a son and a stepdaughter to help raise, she is 45 and taking things more easy, and has said that forthcoming material will be slow to come.  That being the case, I doubt she will go out of her way to tour around the world when her audience comes to her and she makes a killing at it.  At best she may perform MSG or 02 arena for a night or two, but most likely she'll probably do an TV special performing live in Las Vegas and put it out on DVD for her global fans.

Strip Scribbles: Shania Twain’s OWN series finale with L.V. news is Sunday

Friday, June 10, 2011 | 11:43 p.m.

Superstar Shania Twain, our new Caesars Palace resident headliner, answers her own show’s big question as she brings “Why Not? With Shania Twain to its season finale Sunday on the Oprah Winfrey Network. It also is the day that the first song she’s written solo in six years, “Today Is Your Day,” is released as her latest single.

Shania made headlines this week with the official confirmation of rumors we reported as early as January that she is joining the lineup of Celine Dion, Sir Elton John and Rod Stewart at The Colosseum. Our story five months ago was sparked when she sat on the roof of Caesars and posed for a photograph to promote her series on OWN. On Sunday’s show, you’ll hear her say in her own words why she’s decided after a long absence to perform again -- in Las Vegas!

In the finale, she also is seen working on her new record with fellow Canadian hit-maker David Foster. On Monday and Tuesday, we have a two-part exclusive of my intimate and revealing talk with Shania -- plus, new photos -- before she presented at the CMT Awards in Nashville.

IT'S OFFICIAL! Shania Twain Is Heading To Vegas!

Shania Twain Moves to Las Vegas For a Fresh Start in the Desert

Country singer Shania Twain hasn't released a new studio album since "Up!" in 2002. She also had vocal problems that have impaired her ability to sing, and documented her difficulties on a reality show on Oprah Winfrey's OWN network.

Now, the singer is banking on Las Vegas for a comeback.

The Grammy-winning singer last week said that she plans to start a two-year residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Her run of 60 shows per year at the venue begins Dec. 1, 2012. The average ticket price of the show is about $150 and the venue has some 4,300 seats, so Ms. Twain's show should gross in the neighborhood of $79,200,000 over its two-year booking.

Shania Twain hasn't released a new album since "Up!" in 2002.

The 45-year-old Ms. Twain says she doesn't plan to continue her show on the OWN network—called "Why Not? With Shania Twain"—beyond this season. She says it covered "one specific period of her life" and that her vocal problems have been addressed with the help of experts.

Ms. Twain plans to do some additional songwriting, producing and arranging over the summer. "I have pretty much an entire album's worth of music to get serious about," says the artist, whose label is Universal Music Group's Mercury Nashville.

But she adds that while the Vegas show, "Shania Twain: Still the One," will introduce some new music, "it will primarily be based on hits."

"I personally hate when I see a show and the artist doesn't play their hits," she says.

The Lefsetz Letter
First in Music Analysis

Shania Twain In Vegas

A stiff.  She’s the LeBron James of music.  People hate her.

And without her ex-husband Mutt Lange, the best music producer in the world, she’s positively third rate.

She was beautiful, she had catchy music, then she broadened her image, played to the mainstream as opposed to the country core…remember the multiple iterations of her last album?  The pop version, the international version…

She’s been away for too long.

She’s seen as a self-centered narcissist.

I’ve got no inside knowledge, but this won’t be a winner.  Can’t be.  Not at these prices.  Not for long.

Those are steep prices; I do not think that unless Shania employs dancers, wears flashy and sexy costumes and has a running theme to her shows this residency may not last two years.  Lady Gaga and Madonna charges around the same (maybe a little more) and you get the flashiest pop shows on earth.  If her performances at Deerhurst are indicative of her upcoming performances in Vegas then I think that show will be tasteful with her beauty and sweet voice on display, all nice things but not enough to spend $300+.

Those all based on ticket scalper prices and not regular prices. The price is so high because it is a popular show.

What happens in Vegas?: Pop star moms say stints in Sin City bring stability

TORONTO - When most people think of Las Vegas, they see a haven for bleary-eyed gamblers, rampaging bachelor parties and all-night adventures. But for pop stars raising families, Sin City is about something else entirely: stability.

Celine Dion is ensconced in a residency in Vegas while her compatriot Shania Twain is preparing to join her on the Strip. And many female stars say that setting up shop in Vegas is a perfect way to perform for your fans while maintaining a secure family life for your kids.

"It's a wonderful gig for a stay-at-home mom," Vegas resident Marie Osmond said in a recent interview in Toronto. "I mean, you can't beat it. I think that's probably a lot of the allure to women who have families.

"You know, you have a consistent job, you go to work at night, your children have a wonderful life. They can go to school and have their sports. They're not on the road with you."

And the majestic Vegas hotels and casinos that keep luring talent westward ensure that the transition is comfortable.

Twain, who is raising her nine-year-old son Eja with new husband Frederic Thiebaud, will begin a two-year Vegas jaunt on Dec. 1, 2012, with 60 shows per year to be performed at Caesars Palace.

Dion previously completed a five-year stint in 2007 and began a fresh three-year residency in March. She and husband Rene Angelil have a burgeoning brood to care for — three sons, including twins who are still months shy of their first birthdays.

So it makes sense, then, that the promise of a family friendly lifestyle was a big part of the pitch when Caesars first approached the performers.

When wooing Dion, the luxurious hotel provided a house for her family, said Caesars Entertainment's citywide entertainment director Carlos Reynoso. Reynoso said that other standard-issue perks for their headlining talent include car service, butlers (or any other staff needed) and accommodation for nannies.

"We do everything," Reynoso said in a telephone interview. "We make it as comfortable for them as possible."

And that is, of course, a stark contrast to the realities of the road.

Even for artists of Twain or Dion's stature, touring can be a drag. There are the sleepless nights traipsing around airports, the daily challenges of performing in an unfamiliar environment and the endless rotation of foreign hotel beds — furnished though they may be with Egyptian cotton and three-figure thread counts.

But beyond those inconveniences, the bigger problem is that such musical treks are not at all child-friendly.

That's the predicament that three-time Juno-nominated Toronto chanteuse Amy Sky has grappled with.

She's currently working on a new record, her first CD of all-new material in over 10 years. Why the lengthy hiatus? Well, Sky decided years ago to take an extended break from touring so she could spend as much time as possible with her two children before they grew and flew the coop. And since new CDs don't tend to sell particularly well without the backing of a major tour, she had to take a break from recording, too.

But Sky said that dragging her kids on the road with her simply wasn't a viable option.

"Very, very rarely would I take my kids with me," she said in a telephone interview this week. "They have lives, they don't want to be out there. It's not fun or glamorous for them to be on the road — it's boring, you know?"

"And absolutely, that's why (Dion and Twain) are parked there in Vegas. You know, let their fans come to them. It's a great idea. Maybe I should do that," she adds with a laugh.

Osmond, meanwhile, has raised eight children and does regularly travel with her kids — when she has to travel, that is.

She has put down roots in Vegas. She recently played a series of shows in Toronto and immediately headed back to her Nevada home, where she's lived for two years now, and where her sons play lacrosse (she insists the sport is "huge" there).

"It's kind of hard for the kids to really get involved and have their friends and things like that when you're always doing those types of things," explained Osmond, who has a regular gig performing with brother Donny at the Flamingo.

"It's a nice life for them."

Some younger artists, however, wouldn't dream of forsaking the road for an extended engagement in one place.

Vancouver's Michael Buble, for instance, says it's vital for him to travel directly to his fans, whether they're in a major metropolis or tucked away in rural Idaho.

"Vegas is an awesome place if it's a stop on your tour, but if your tour begins and ends in Vegas, you're hooped," the three-time Grammy winner said in a recent online chat with his fans.

"Sorry Celine."

Reynoso, unsurprisingly, doesn't see it that way.

While an extended stint in Sin City isn't the same as meeting fans where they live, he notes that music lovers from all over are drawn to the city's starry-eyed glamour.

"At the end of the day, Las Vegas is a destination market," he said.

"It's a win-win situation. Not only do you get to see one of your favourite iconic stars, you also get to play in Las Vegas."

I understand why Shania would want to do with her come back Tour in LV though it's not good idea for the fans, If she would have come to Spain at least I will have a chance to go and see her , I never had the option for that, that's to pity for me.
