Shania Twain Is Heading To Las Vegas!

2012 Rewind: No. 2 – Garth Closes Las Vegas Show as Shania Twain, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill Begin Theirs

By Sarah Wyland | December 25, 2012

Nashville is still ground zero for country music, but a few of the genre’s biggest stars have headed to Las Vegas. Garth Brooks wrapped his three-year run of one man shows at Encore Theater in the Wynn in November. Wife Trisha Yearwood was on hand for the emotional final performance, which Garth later told the Las Vegas Sun wasn’t his greatest performance of all time.

“It wasn’t the best show over the three years because I was too emotional,” he said. “I was getting ready to go out there and kick some ass, and then Steve [Wynn] did an introduction, and I was toast after that.”

Garth’s final show lasted nearly two hours. He sang hits by some of his favorite artists as well as his own hits and was joined by Trisha for two duets and again as the curtain came down. Garth hopes to return to the Wynn to tape the show for a television special. Rumors are also flying that he will resume touring in 2014.

“For now, our job is to let the kids finish high school, get their education, then we’ll see what we’re going to do,” Garth said. “We still have [a] junior in high school, so there’s a couple of years to finish there, and then we’ll see if there’s a place for us back in the industry.”

Just as Garth was closing his show, Shania Twain was preparing to open hers. She kicked off her two-year residency of “Shania Twain: Still The One” at the Colosseum on December 1. The 100-minute set included dancing violinists and cellists, a flying motorcycle and horses as well as a video screen comparable to IMAX.

“This has been a dream for eight years, including the two since we made the announcement,” Shania said to the Las Vegas Sun after the show. “It all came together; I surprised myself. It was a big challenge. At one point, I thought I was taking on more than I could handle, but I stuck with it. I surprised myself and am so relieved and happy.”

Less than two weeks after Shania made her Vegas debut, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill opened their intimate “Soul2Soul” show at the Venetian. The pair delivered a personal show, performing without over-the-top stage theatrics while putting their love for one another front and center. They have nine more weekends at The Venetian scheduled through April 2013.

Stagehand hurt on Twain's new show struggles to recover

By Lawrence Mower | Dec. 26, 2012 | 2:02 a.m.
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Matthew Moore sits in his Pahrump home, his arm in a cast and his neck in a brace.

The 35-year-old stagehand remembers nothing about how he ended up in this position.

He just knows it has something to do with that day working on the set of "Still the One," the Shania Twain show at Caesars Palace.

"Everybody was being pretty safe. I was getting comfortable with the crew," he said, "and then one day I woke up in a hospital bed."

Moore, 35, is one of two stagehands who have fallen into the stage's two-story loading pit in the past 14 months, prompting investigations and fines from state regulators, and raising questions about workplace safety.

Greg Michele, a stagehand who said he reported the first accident to the Nevada Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said that AEG Live, which managed the set, didn't take workplace safety seriously.

"Does somebody need to die before you start taking it serious?" Michele said. "Occupational safety just doesn't seem like a priority these days. It's just sad."

AEG Live said in a statement that safety is a top priority, and in the Colosseum's 10-year history, there have been only two accidents related to the stage lift.

But in at least one of the falls, the company wasn't practicing its own safety precautions.

PREVENTABLE ACCIDENTS?

There were several breakdowns on Oct. 25, 2011, the first day on the set of "America's Got Talent," a televised talent show.

No safety meeting was held.

The lighting was dim.

And, perhaps most critically, there was no barrier around the lift used to move equipment and props from the basement to the stage.

When the lift is lowered, it creates a 20-by-20-foot hole in the middle of the stage.

Company policy was to have one person guard each side of the pit when the lift is lowered, but on this day they had only two.

When an audio subcontractor started walking across the stage around 5 p.m., the conditions were ripe for an accident.

"They didn't even have enough people on crew to watch the hole," said Michele, who no longer is working on the Colosseum set. "They didn't put up cones or stanchions around the barrier."

As workers were using the lift to lower risers into the basement, one carpenter yelled at the stagehand to stop walking.

By then, it was too late. The man took one more step and fell into the then-12 foot hole, landing on his feet on the lift.

His right leg and ankle shattered.

Observers noted his ankle was twisted and bleeding, and blood stained his socks and sneakers.

He was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.

OSHA inspectors noted a series of problems, including that AEG Live didn't follow its own workplace safety program, which included analyzing and explaining any hazards on set.

"We didn't talk about anything," one carpenter wrote to OSHA investigators.

The state fined AEG Live $7,600, then reduced it to $5,760, records show. The company promised that when the lift was lowered, they would place physical barriers around the pit, announce on a bullhorn when the lift was going to be lowered, sound an alarm and place spotters around the hole.

The company passed a follow-up inspection several months later.

AEG Live said that "all safety mechanisms were in place" when Moore, a stagehand hired by a subcontractor to handle wireless microphones, fell into the pit Nov. 19.

What Moore does remember is that during his few days on the set, he sensed safety was emphasized. He noticed the bullhorn was used when the pit was lowered.

"They don't normally do that on a stage," said Moore, who has worked on stages in Pahrump, Las Vegas and around the world since he was 16.

But he said he did notice that the rope stanchion - similar to the ones you see in lines for movie theaters and airport security gates - was sometimes used and sometimes not.

He doesn't know what was being used the day he fell. He just remembers waking up in a bed at University Medical Center with a broken arm, herniated discs in his neck and swelling in his brain. He can barely see out of his right eye.

He was so confused when he woke up that he believed he had been in a plane crash. Friends told him he fell 30 feet into the pit.

"They're amazed I survived," he said of UMC's doctors.

OSHA is investigating the incident. A statement from AEG Live said that safety of guests and employees is its top priority, and it would adopt needed changes.

"The Colosseum at Caesars Palace will continue to implement any and all new safety precautions needed to continue to ensure the highest safety standards at the venue," the statement said.

DANGEROUS WORK

Moore is speaking out to bring attention to the issue. He didn't know someone else had fallen at the same stage earlier.

He acknowledges that stage work is not the safest business.

"It's a very dangerous field we work in," he said. "It's very easy to make a misstep and fall."

But experts say it doesn't have to be that way.

Monona Rossol, founder of Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety Inc., a not-for-profit group in New York City that advocates theater safety, said the industry has a long way to go to catch up to the safety standards on construction sites.

"If you start collecting this data, we're probably in worse shape, by far, than the construction industry," Rossol said. "This is not a safe industry. It just looks that way."

She said that theaters - starting in grade school - have traditionally resisted or ignored common-sense measures designed to protect performers and stagehands.

"They ignore the laws. They ignore common sense. They just do, and they get away with it," Rossol said.

The first thing theaters should do is evaluate the risks of the performances, discuss the risks with employees and find ways to mitigate them. That's how theaters can pull off daring acts, such as the Cirque du Soleil shows, safely night in, night out, she said.

Both Rossol and Janet Sellery, a former stage manager who now provides safety consulting, know people who have suffered critical injuries from falls.

"We have hazards in this industry, and I don't think we're doing a good enough job of taking care of them," said Sellery, based in Ontario.

For Moore, his return to work is uncertain. Doctors have told him he will need a neck brace for months. He is relying on a friend to perform household chores and run errands, and his trade union has provided a lot of support, he said.

The good news is that vision in his right eye should return. But without employment, he is in danger of losing his modest Pahrump home. He has hired a lawyer.

Before the accident, he was in the process of training one of his dogs to become a service animal.

"I think she'll be spending a lot of time with me for a while."

Butters I wrote a similar message but it just went off (Or that I don't find it) It hurts to see Shania's career at the moment people blame here anything but won't admit Shania just can not sing good anymore, and again I don't blame her for that her vocals are still need a lot of rest. As I wrote on some other messages a new Album is better than a bad show, and please no more voice affects.

Perhaps with time it will get stronger. I'm sure she is doing everything under the sun to make it stronger and to be able to reach the high notes like she use to.

With her Vegas gig, at least she is getting plenty of time to rest her voice--so in that way it is better than her touring all time across the country.

A new album with a strong voice would be perfect. But life does not always work out the way we want it.

@Butters i do agree with you, and Sorry everyone i have been a shania fan since the beginning, i bought her first album 3 times, and Yes her voice has changed, its definitely not strong anymore like the early days, as for the album, im pretty sure, She has all but maybe alittle lost the confidence to make one, with Voice issues, Divorce, No Producer (David Foster is no good for her) etc! Her current Career Move is sad to me and im sure the thousands who cant afford a few hundred dollar ticket to be in Vegas, but if it makes her happy, that's all that matters, and she gets exposure, big time in the media,, Who knows what will come of this, but Shania has had a good run of a career, so everyone should just Cherish the memories, buy the old music, maybe see a vegas show if you can, and HOPE for a new Album,, to come out of it at the end of the Run! Lets just make this a Positive Shania board and NOT Negative! Thanks..

and Merry Christmas everyone enjoy the holiday!!!!

I agree with everything you said.

She has had one heck of a run. She may not be the singer she used to be and she may never be back on the charts again. But everyone's time in the sun is fleeting. Taylor Swift is now the queen of pop/country and she is the one with the hits on the charts and a massive tour. But Shania gave us plenty of awesome music in such a short time. So we will always have that.

Shania is #1 in concert sales and her albums sales have gone up, so I think a lot people think otherwise.

It is because she is a massive star. People who see her in Vegas are there for the spectacle. They are not going to notice if her voice is not up to par. She puts on a good show with lots of glitz--the focus is not on her voice.

I was just wondering what ever happened to the medleys Shania evidently enjoyed doing so much during rehearsals for Still the One? I would have certainly thought she would have sung The Woman in Me, Forever and for Always & possibly When you Kiss me or You've Got a Way making up the medley...

It's possible, I guess, she doesn't yet feel comfortable/ happy enough with the way she sounds to belt out these beautiful songs to her fans and maybe with practice over the next few months before her next leg of shows begin in March the idea is to include these? It just seems funny I read in a number of places she was asked what part she was enjoying the most and she stated the medleys.

The medley in her show consists of Come On Over, Rock This Country! and Today Is Your Day this time. It's the campfire scence.

Shania may not ever make it back to the top of any charts, but every artist has a run in their career of great success and fame. She had a great 10 year run, but like all artists do, they fade away when new talent comes to play. With no new music with decent promotion is several years, it would be hard to not have new music music and expect it to do well, unless she went on another mini world promotion tour. Only time can tell if that's the road she decides to take.

 Completely agree.

And it still may happen. Look at Garth, he took a lot of time off, then did Vegas and is hinting when his girl is done with high school he will return to touring and have a new CD. It would be pretty cool three years from now if the two biggest names in country BOTH release new CD's and tour the country! What if they joined forces?? Imagine a Garth and Shania tour!

I think what Shania is doing in Vegas is a fantastic opportunity for her and it's obviously a success. It's baby step for her in my opinion  If she makes it big again then fantastic if not then that is ok too.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2013.

Also look at how both Garth and Shania voluntarily left the spotlight on their own. It wasn't because they weren't successful, but it was their own choices to step down. They both had short runs that had so much impact with record breaking sales and tours. Another thing about Shania is she hates the spotlight. She has said in several interviews over the years that she would prefer to be behind the curtains as a songwriter rather than a performer. But with becoming successful it required her to be both a singer and songwriter. Honestly I don't think Shania cares if she ever records again, because I think if she was to just quit tomorrow, in my opinion and what she emphasizes in interviews that she would be content with what she did.

Thanks to Sergioalfredo20 on YouTube I'm watching some of the clips he posted of the Vegas show. Shania sounds amazing, I think she gives her best on the high notes, but she still has little problems with the lower ones. But I think she's doin' a great job.

Happy New Year everybody, I hope it'll be a 2013 full of Shania.

Prince Harry tops year's top stories

By Norm Clarke | Posted: Dec. 31, 2012 | 2:04 a.m.

It was a year of surprises in Las Vegas, thanks to a royal scandal, an Olympic beauty who turned call girl and a jaw-dropping Justin Bieber moment.

My top 10 local celebrity stories of 2012 includes breakups, hookups and other news that hit the headlines:

1. Photos of Prince Harry's buck-naked billiards in an Encore VIP suite went global within hours.

2. Olympian distance runner Suzy Favor Hamilton fessed up to being a $600-an-hour, $6,000-a-day escort in Las Vegas and elsewhere.

3. Bieber won least likely wingman of the year when he showed up in Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s entourage, carrying a championship belt into the ring. Bieber's management team had to be talked off the Stratosphere's ledge.

4. Biggest romantic shocker: The engagement of 95-year-old Kirk Kerkorian, the largest shareholder in MGM Resorts International, to Oklahoma City socialite Lu Beard, described as a longtime friend.

5. Biggest breakups: Entertainment giant Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), a major player in Las Vegas, announced in September it was planning to sell its assets. Other splits: Mayweather and rapper 50 Cent and former "Peepshow' BFFs Holly Madison and Angel Porrino.

6. Mike Tyson's strong performance in his one-man show "Undisputed Truth" was the latest twist to the ex-champ's stunning turnaround.

7. UFC president Dana White severed ties with the Palms after learning his credit line was cut in half without being notified.

8. Best marketing move: Shania Twain's arrival at the Caesars Palace fountains on horseback after helping herd rodeo horses down the partially closed Strip.

9. Garth Brooks' opt-out of his final year at Wynn Las Vegas

10. The suicide of deal maker Jack Wishna, who died of carbon monoxide after being found in a classic Bentley previously owned by Wayne Newton.

Maybe Shania really is bringing Vegas to the next level as they'd hoped. Apparently Britney Spears is inking a deal for a residency in Vegas too!

Britney Spears Will Be Crowned Queen Of …Caesar's Palace?! Las Vegas Residency Deal Is A Go!

1/16/2013 6:11 PM ET

Sin City is about to get even MORE sinful!

Britney Spears has signed a $200 million two-year contract for a residency in Las Vegas!!!

While an official statement hasn't been made confirming the move, it is believed that Brit Brit will call The Colosseum at Caesar's Palace her new home.

However, Caesar's Palace is worried that Brit won't have the same kind of successful ticket sales that predecessors Elton John, Shania Twain, and Celine Dion experienced.

A business expert said:

"She has a narrower appeal."

But even if the queen of pop doesn't as much universal appeal as Elton, it is thought that she will make up for it in the publicity she will garner for the Sin City staple.

Experts estimate that Jason Trawick's former flame will rake in $2 million a week which will add up to a fortune over 2 years.

Let the games begin!

UH,no. Those details are most wrong. Spears is not going to be playing at caesars palace and not even close to the money tmz and perez hilton talk about. She is negotiating with Planet Hollywood which is a property of ceasars entertainment. But in no way is she playing at ceasars palace. If Perez or TMZ even did their research they would know Ceasars is booked till the end of 2014. Another thing, it is Spears management who start these rumors and are the sources in order to try and get a bidding war. Ceasars Palace was never interested in having her as they have icon acts acts like Elton,Celine and Shania booked for awhile. Planet Hollywood is looking for someone and Spears is negotiating with them. And never believe any of the socalled sources giving money figures. It is all b.s.. First of all you have to be proven to be reliable and show up for your shows and sell the tickets before any money is given. Ceasars entertainment is not stupid enough to throw away money to any act who is not shown to be reliable and has a narrow fanbase. Anyway I could careless who plays in Las Vegas, Just correcting some details that Perez got wrong and tmz got wrong.
I personally wish Shania would not of done vegas. I feel bad for her fans overseas who do not have the means to see her. And those fans won't even get a new album from her.
It would of been great talking about Shania doing a world tour with a new album to promote but it is not to be.
Anway that is my two cents.

I think we all would like a Shania world tour and new album instead of Vegas. But such is life unfortunately, and Vegas it is.

She is such a brilliant artist and it is so sad that her last album was over 10 years ago.....

And what indeed is weird, her claims that she's been writing all the time for the last couple of years and still no new album, tour or any new songs besides Today Is Your Day for the Vegas Show...

It has to be a confidence thing. There is no way that if she was writing the past few years like she said that there would not be a new album or at least a few new radio singles......it does not take that long to record a few singles....

She may say that she is writing, but perhaps the whole producer thing is holding her up by not having Mutt around to do his magic on that end. I was not NOT happy with David Foster and her collaboration. Today is Your Day was bland and boring. Nothing like her old stuff.

She needs to find a producer similar to Mutt....there has to other ones out there who can would know what to do with her voice and type of songs.

She would be really blowing an opportunity with all the press surrounding Vegas if she does not release a new album this coming year....she has been out of the spotlight--the Vegas buzz can only help a new product in a very competitive market place.

Share Your Bike Picture

January 28, 2013

Check out this awesome picture of Shania on the motorcycle from “Still the One” in Las Vegas.

This bike is set up in the lobby of the Colosseum and fans can pose for a professional picture on this bike, with part of the proceeds going to support Shania Kids Can!!  We want to see your picture on this awesome motorcycle!  If you had your picture taken on the bike while attending the show, please scan it, and send it to info@shaniakidscan.ca, so we can post it in our photo gallery!  This is a great keepsake from the show, and a great way to help the kids!

Shania claims to be writing all the time. Any thoughts about what direction she'll go after Vegas? What comes next?

 Family life?

Do you think she has any clue how many of her fans she has pissed of with this Vegas gig and waffling about a new album? Do you think she cares?

Everyone knows how I was critical of Shania over the last few years and it turned out everything I said was true. But I accepted the fact she is not the artist we all thought. I have no desire to go say anymore about it. I wish her the best in what she does in the future. I still love her old songs with Mutt and even some of her earlier stuff before that.

I have a pet peeve when people say it is what it is lol!! To be honest that makes no sense at all to me in my opinion.
Shania is who she is !!! Now that makes sense. We can't change her so lets just accept her for what she is. this is Shania without Mutt remember. This is who she really is. If she has nobody to motivate her to put out music like Mutt then what do we expect? We can't expect her to change who she is. I accepted that and I wish her the best and her family the best. But folks don't expect any studio album anytime before Vegas is over if at all. I hope I am at least wrong about that. Because I would still buy an album if she put out one.

Shania Twain Caesars Palace 2012

After a hiatus of eight years, Shania Twain kicked off her new show ‘Still the One’ at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. Set to be a two-year residency, ‘Still the One’ shows some features in D3 Technologies’ upcoming release including a faster-than-ever auto-calibration. ‘Still the One’ emphasises the relevance of pre-visualising accurately in a 3D environment, while working with a very large pixel space.

Background

With a total of seven different sets, Still the One is a fast-paced, highly personal journey through Shania’s career. Show director Raj Kapoor, lighting designer Peter Morse, production designer Michael Cotten and video and projection designer Bob Bonniol all worked closely with show creator Shania to create an immersive experience for the public.
Bonniol explains: “Raj said, let’s take the whole venue environment and turn it into a media driven landscape. The Colosseum has a large LED wall already but we’ve expanded the canvas by mapping the walls of the theatre, the moving scenic architecture on stage, the floor: in function it is a giant pixel space that we are using as one seamless canvas.”

d3 Solution

This ambition naturally came with a set of technical challenges. Bonniol, who has specified all the equipment on the show, mentions not only needing a solution that has the capability to deal with a venue-sized canvas, but just as importantly a system that would make it easy for the creative team to deal with this large pixel space.
Says Bonniol: “What initially attracted me to d3 is that you can extremely accurately visualise everything in advance with the 3D stage simulator. This enabled us to nimbly and quickly make changes on the fly and give us time to respond and take it in a different direction if it things weren’t working creatively. We could see how the show came together before we got to the venue: this is something that proved to be a critical element to the success of this production.”

What is d3?

d3 is a real-time 3D stage simulator, timeline based sequencer, video playback engine, and content mapper, all integrated into a single piece of software that runs on your own laptop or dedicated d3 hardware.

Import stages from the CAD program of your choice, add screens, props, and content to get a true simulation of your production, well before you actually start your build.

Now there’s a single tool and a cohesive workflow you can use during all stages of your project, saving you time and money at every step.

According to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace Facebook page, tickets for Celine Dion's recently announced sets of shows June 4 - July 6 and August 7 - September 1 at The Colosseum are on sale now. Rod Stewart has shows July 20 - 21, 24, 27 - 28, 31, August 3 - 4.

So this means after Shania's May 14 - June 1 set of shows, there is a 2-week period in July (7-19) that she could have shows and then again in September. If Shania doesn't squeeze some shows into July she'll be basically off the whole Summer (June, July & August).

That page (http://www.facebook.com/ShaniaStillTheOne) is only a fan page. This page (http://www.facebook.com/ShaniaInVegas) appears to be the official one for the show run by Caesars Palace/AEG Live.

Hardy Hemphill said on his facebook that Shania will be off on July / August and September and then she will be back until the end of the year for more shows.
