RIAA Overstates Shania Twain Accreditations By Millions

RIAA Overstates Shania Twain and Santana Accreditations By Millions
By Paul Cashmere
Fri, 07 Jan 2011

Both Shania Twain and Santana have Platinum awards hanging on their walls that they did not earn.

A study of the SoundScan official sales compared to RIAA’s Gold and Platinum certifications show that Shania Twain’s ‘Come On Over’ has been accredited for more than 4 million sales than it actually earned and Santana’s ‘Supernatural’ sales figure has been fudged more than 3 million by RIAA.

According to RIAA, Shania Twain ‘Come On Over’ has been certified for sales of more than 20 million but the official figure sales from SoundScan is 15,487,000.

Santana ‘Supernatural’ has been awarded 15 times platinum status (15 million sales) but according to SoundScan has sold 11,687,000.

RIAA has Twain’s ‘Come On Over’ listed as the 9th biggest selling album of all-time in the United States but the real figure from SoundScan doesn’t even have it in the Top 20.

Santana ‘Supernatural’ is the 22nd biggest seller of all-time according to RIAA, but the official SoundScan figure places it outside the Top 50.

Both the Shania Twain and Santana albums were released after 1991, when SoundScan started to register sales.

SoundScan reported its Top 10 selling albums of its era (since 1991) yesterday.

They were:

1. Metallica – Metallica (15,620,000)
2. Shania Twain – Come On Over (15,487,000)
3. Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill (14,642,000)
4. Backstreet Boys – Millennium (12,109,000)
5. Soundtrack – Bodyguard (11,815,000)
6. Santana – Supernatural (11,687,000)
7. The Beatles – 1 (11,584,000)
8. Creed – Human Clay (11,547,000)
9. N Sync – No Strings Attached (11,113,000)
10. Celine Dion – Falling Into You (10,781,000)

According to RIAA, the biggest selling album in the United States is still Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits'.

Apparently RIAA bases its sales on the number of shipments sent to retailers, etc.. SoundScan goes by actual sales. I found this online:

Nielsen SoundScan
figures are not used in RIAA certification; the RIAA system predates Nielsen SoundScan and includes sales outlets Nielsen misses. Prior to Nielsen SoundScan, RIAA certification was the only audited and verifiable system for tracking music sales in the U.S.; it is still the only system capable of tracking 100% of sales (albeit as shipments less returns, not actual sales like Nielsen SoundScan). This system has allowed, at times, for record labels to promote an album as gold or platinum simply based on large shipments. For instance, in 1978 the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band soundtrack shipped platinum but was a sales bust, with two million returns.[2] Similarly, all four solo albums by the members of Kiss simultaneously shipped platinum that same year but did not reach the top 20 of the Billboard 200 album chart.[3] The following year, the RIAA began requiring 120 days from the release date before recordings were eligible for certification, although that requirement has been reduced over the years and currently stands at 30 days. More recently, Sony was roundly criticized in 1995 for hyping Michael Jackson's double album HIStory as five times platinum, based on shipments of 2.5 million and using the RIAA's recently adopted practice of counting each disc toward certification, while SoundScan was reporting only 1.3 million copies sold.[4] A similar discrepancy between shipments and sales was reported with The Lion King soundtrack.[5]

Record sales are measured by two different means, one for first week/weekly/chart purposes, the other for gold/platinum status. Soundscan measures weekly sales, which influences the Billboard charts and radio play, The RIAA measures record label sales which certifies gold and platinum status.

Because RIAA numbers effectively represent sales at a wholesale level and Soundscan at a retail, an album may easily be certified gold or platinum before it's sales numbers actually reflect it on Soundscan.

In addition, RIAA treats physical and digital sales separately, while Soundscan counts only by UPC code, which, depending on the genre/artist, can also create a significant discrepancy in the numbers.

RIAA Certifications

RIAA (Recording Industry Associatin of America) gives gold, platinum and diamond certification for albums and singles. Certifications are for units shipped to retailers, not necessarily those sold to customers. Certification is not automatic, but has to be requested and paid for ($300) by the label. The label also has to supply the paperwork verifying the quantity of CDs shipped. The certification process cannot be requested until 4 weeks after the album's street date, in case retailers return the album shipments to the label. "Double albums" are counted as 2 CDs, so if a double album sells 1 million it actually has reached double platinum status.

Album certifications
Diamond - 10 million
Platinum - 1 million
Gold - 500,000

Certification Criteria

Along with minimum sales figures, a number of other criteria accompany each title for certification. The list and table below describe what titles and types of sales can be considered for the awards.
Each company that requests RIAA® certification must be a firm or corporation that has headquarters in the United States and is engaged in the legitimate production and sale of sound recordings.
Recordings become eligible for certification 30 days after initial street date. Audio and music video titles may be requested for award certification starting 30 days after product is commercially available to consumers.
Only domestic sales and sales to U.S. military post exchanges may be included. The requesting company must separate PX sales from other accounts on sales sheets. Export sales outside the United States are not included in certification.
Club sales and club free goods may be included towards certification. Product shipped to retail, mail order, record clubs, TV marketing and other ancillary markets are combined toward certified sales. All shipments to these accounts must be verified by the label.
Promotional radio and press copies, cut-outs, inventory sell-offs and surplus sales are not included toward certification.
Catalog product, specifically pre-1972 album releases, are eligible for certification by meeting either the unit shipment or manufacturer's dollar requirement for each award level.

Gold® Certification
Platinum® Certification
Multi-Platinum™ Certification

In 2004, the RIAA announced the formal launch of the Digital Sales award. Developed to recognize the significant sales of the burgeoning digital music market.

In 2006, the RIAA announced the formal launch of a Master Ringtone Sales Award, updating its 47-year old Gold and Platinum program to recognize the growing popularity of enjoying music through cellular phones.

SOUNDSCAN
Nielsen SoundScan is an information system that tracks sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada (separately). Sales data from point-of-sale cash registers is collected weekly from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant and non-traditional (on-line stores, venues, etc.) outlets. In addition, numerous concert venue sites are registered to report onsite sales. Weekly data is compiled and made available every Wednesday to participating retailers, record labels, Billboard and the radio industry. Nielsen SoundScan is the sales source for the Billboard music charts. The ever important "first week sales" numbers come from Soundscan.

It is important to note that Soundscan is a subscription service and requires computerized point of sale equipment. Therefore, many independent and small urban retailers do not report their sales. This has been seen to have the most impact on the sales data from the Rap/HipHop market.

Sound Scan Claims RIAA Erred

New York City : NY : USA | Jan 07, 2011

According to Nielsen Sound Scan, the people who track record sales, the RIAA – Recording Industry Association of America –, the people who award gold and platinum records, erroneously awarded multiple platinum awards to Shania TwainShania Twain and Santanta. According to Sound Scan Twain’s “Come on Over” sold only 15,487,000 copies when the RIAA reports 20 million in sales. And for SantanaSantana, his “Supernatural” album sold 11,687,000 when the RIAA credited the legendary guitar player with 15 million.

Nielsen Sound Scan, who began counting n 1991, counts only albums sold via over the counter record sales in music retail markets. When the RIAA auditors calculate album sales; they count the number of albums shipped, subtracting all returns and albums used for promotional purposes – this includes music retailers, mail order retailers, Internet retailers, mail order clubs, direct sales, and TV advertisement sales. By counting ALL sales the numbers will be significantly higher than simply counting music retailers.

The RIAA has Shania Twain credited as a diamond award for selling more than 10 million copies, 20 times platinum, and number eight on the all time album sales list.

Santana’s “Supernatural” has been certified diamond award status and 15 times platinum by the RIAA; they have the album listed at number 22 on the all time list.
