"Today Is Your Day" on the Billboard, radio & video charts

Shania Twain Returns To Country Songs Chart

The latest stop on Shania Twain's multi-media comeback blitz: Billboard's Country Songs chart.

The star singer/songwriter ends a six-year hiatus from the survey, as "Today Is Your Day" blasts in as the list's highest debut at No. 40. The bow marks the fourth-highest start of Twain's 33 entries dating to her arrival in 1993. (All charts will be refreshed Thursday, June 23, on Billboard.com).

"Today" launches with 2.3 million audience impressions and airplay detected on 84 of the Country Songs chart's 127 reporters, according to Nielsen BDS.

Twain had last appeared on Country Songs with the No. 29-peaking "Shoes," from the "Desperate Housewives" soundtrack, in 2005. She has scored 16 Country Songs top 10s, including seven No. 1s.

Twain shot to Nashville dominance when her 1995 release "The Woman in Me" spent 29 weeks atop Billboard's Country Albums chart. The album has sold 7.7 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Follow-up "Come On Over" yielded a record eight Country Songs top 10s and totaled a record 50 weeks at No. 1 on Country Albums. With 15.5 million copies sold, the set ranks as the second-best-selling album in the U.S. since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991. (Metallica's eponymous 1991 album outpaces "Over" by 167,000 units).

With 34 million albums sold, Twain is the top-selling female country artist in SoundScan history. (Reba McEntire ranks second at 29.8 million).

Since releasing her most recent studio album, however, 2002's "Up!," Twain has seemingly made more headlines for her personal life. Following her husband and creative partner Robert John "Mutt" Lange's affair with her best friend, Marie Anne Thibaud, Twain divorced Lange last year.

Twain married Frederic Thiebaud (Marie Anne Thiebaud's ex-husband) Jan. 1 and has remained a force across a variety of platforms since.

Twain was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame March 27; she released the autobiographical book, "From This Moment On," May 3; and, she debuted "Why Not? with Shania Twain" May 8 on OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network, premiering "Today" in the series' first episode. (She unveiled a duet remake with Lionel Richie of his 1981 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Endless Love" (with Diana Ross) in the show's June 12 finale).

On June 2, Twain received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At a June 8 press conference at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, she announced plans to headline Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas with "Still the One," set to open Dec. 1, 2012, and run for two years.

While Twain has yet to formalize plans for her next studio album, her track record at the format and pop culture standing are making for a warm welcome at radio in her return with "Today."

Despite Twain's sparse recent output, her plentiful catalog has allowed her to remain a force on country radio.

"Even after a long absence, I am still asked about her quite often," says WGTY (Great Country 107.7)/York, Penn., operations manager Scott Donato. The station spun "Today" 19 times in the June 13-19 tracking week, the most among all Country Songs panelists.

"With many of our listeners glued to her television series, and her book sales taking off, she is still very much relevant in 2011."

"Shania is a superstar, not just among country fans, but music fans in general," says KMPS (94.1)/Seattle program director Becky Brenner. The station played "Today" 12 times last week.

"Her story is one that people can relate to and want to hear more about. She is not afraid to share her journey so that others can be inspired to pursue their dreams. I think that makes people want to support her even more."

While Twain made most of her trips up Country Songs with such uptempo fare as "Any Man of Mine," "That Don't Impress Me Much," and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," her new single, released to radio and digital retailers June 12, is a ballad, which Twain wrote (and co-produced with David Foster and Nathan Chapman).

"The song is different for her, and we've received a range of opinions on it, mostly positive, with some negatives sprinkled in," says Donato.

"Even so, most of the listeners who responded negatively are still looking forward to hearing more new material from her. The vast majority are simply excited to hear her back on the radio.

"Only time will tell if the music matches the anticipation," Donato muses. "We'll know much better in coming weeks if this song is truly something this market wants to hear.

"Just because it's somewhat of a curveball on first listen doesn't worry me too much. She's Shania Twain, for garsh sakes, and she's omnipresent right now.

"If this new music does break through, I'll be as happy as anyone, both as a fan and for the format."

On the Mediabase Radio Airplay Country Chart, "Today" debuted at No. 47 with 292 spins/plays for the week in the U.S. The No. 1 song on Country radio is Blake Shelton's "Honey Bee" with 5635 spins! 292 is basically nothing.

RE: "Today Is Your Day" on the Billboard & radio charts

I dont listen to the radio anymore. I buy the songs i love (all of  Shania's of course!) and listen  to them on my pc while playing games or on my mp3 player. I hate commercials and most of everything they play on my local stations. Do you know if it is selling well on itunes?

I don't know if Shania really expected this song to break her back into country or mainstream radio for that matter. The song worked as promotion for her mini series, like a theme song. I'll be happy for her if her own theme song makes it into the Top 10, but the cautious optimist within tells me that the Top 20 is the best that she can hope for. Regardless of "Today", mainstream radio sucks a big toe; it has been on a downhill slope since the 1990s. They don't listen to the audiences that they are supposed to serve. Radio stations in South Florida are so out of touch; the dinosaur radio programmers are stuck in the 1980s in terms of format. They play the same lame songs over and over again and show no creativity by doing extended plays, live concerts on the radio, play remixes and have more in depth artist interviews. Don't get me started on this...

Hi,

I think we should all keep in my mind that this is her first song release without Mutt.  She has to get her confidence back and also she did this first song as more of a tribute to her love for Fredric.  So with that in mind I think the songs she releases in the future will have more meat and be about feelings whether the feelings are about what she went through with her divorce or her new found love and life with Fred is yet to be seen.  I read somewhere that the new stuff was more about her feelings so it should be very interesting.  Remember when we were comparing the song "Any Man of Mine" written by Shania and Mutt together with the "This Man of Mine" written by Shania by herself?  This is exactly the style fo writing that I expected from her.  It really should not come as a suprise when you take this into consideration.  Her style alone is totally different from her style with Mutt.  For  me I am satisfied with what she has written and totally support it...she can do it without Mutt just as well as with him...her music can and will stand on its own and this is what is important to her right now...too much negative criticism is the whole reason she is going through what she is.  I think a big part of her confidence problem stemmed from Mutt and his perfectionist ways and she placed that load on herself and took on his perfectionist ways and has not lowered her standards...perfection can not be achieved ever at anything....not humanly possible.  Shania hears imperfections where there are none...she wants perfedtion from herself at all costs and needs to realize that she like us is only human and will make mistakes.  She dwells too much on what she sees as her imperfections...let them go and just sing and be free.

Just my opinion

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

Hi,

Just started my morning off the best way possible.  I turned on CMT at 4:55 Am and Shania's Today is your Day video was playing...looks like a different edit than what was on the Oprah Show.  Not sure as it had just started when I turned on the TV so I didn't have time to hit the record button on the DVR.  I hope to DVR it and check it out more closely but it does look even different than the one that was on the Oprah show.  I'll try and record it soon and compare them...may not be much of a difference but even so if it is different at all I have to have a copy...anyone else notice if they are different?

Just wondering

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

 Hi,

Tommy I can't see the video you posted at work but the one that is running on CMT has the song name and her label and the song writer and the the director is listed as the Oprah Winfrey Show.  I am assuming that that is the only video we will get for this song as they meaning Shania and her people want to strike while the iron is hot so to speak and keep the song out there right now while they are still riding on all the other publicity then again it is Shania and she could later on do another video and re release it again later who knows.  Hope this helps.  I am DVRing GAC and CMT PURE to see what they are running if anything.  Want to see if all the videos are the same.

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

I'm not sure where "Today Is Your Day" is on this week's Billboard Country Songs Chart yet. The chart on Billboard.com only lists the Top 30. Hopefully it made a slight climb from No. 40 last week.

The song debuts this week on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart (all genres) at No. 66.

Also, a big welcome back to Shania Twain. “Today Is Your Day,” which enters the Hot 100 at No. 66, is her first appearance on the chart since 2005.

Hi Tommy,

Can see the video now and it is the official video that is posted on her website and this is what is airing on CMT and GAC.  Been watching for it on VH1 but have not seen it there yet.  Also forgot to tell you that on CMT insider last week they said that Shania's series Why Not? will air in the fall on CMT.  Great news!!! Can watch reruns all the time.

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

 Hi,

You can go online and type in your local radio stations call letters and add online request line and it will bring up a playlist with all the songs the radio stations songs they play and you can pick 5 songs.  Shania's is on the list.  It's in alphabetical order by artist.  I vote even though I am not listening to the radio...it's a vote for Shania and even if I am not listening others get to hear who may not have heard it before.  It's my way of supporting Shania...everybody should do it.  I try to do it a couple of times a day and I also do it on the video stations on tv.  I go online and vote for the song whenever I can.  The more we support it the better for us and Shania...it will give her the confidence boost she needs and we will get more new music...

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

I really love the song and its message. In fact I have it printed out and hanging in 2 places in my office.

The video though is really a "NON Video". It's from the show. Nice to see once, but I don't really want to see up Carrie's nose again.

I'm sure new music will be coming out, and a whole CD far in advance of Las Vegas.

She's a clever girl. She doesn't have to take the show on the road. If you want to see her in concert, you have to travel to her, and pay dearly for it. That does Impress me much!!

I don't understand why people are trying to compare her older music to this new music! I mean the 90's music had different style and sound, and now really this is a well put together song in the sound. I beleive alot of people who have heard this song on the radio are starting to get used to it and know that it's not that bad of a song. I give it another 3 to 4 weeks before cracking the top 30! KEEP REQUESTING AT YOUR LOCAL STATION!!!
