Shania Twain kicks off fundraising program with shoes worn at recent awards show

TORONTO, Aug. 16, 2011 /CNW/ - eBay is giving Canadians the opportunity to give back with the launch of Giving Works, a program that connects Canadian buyers with the causes they care about most.

The program, which enables Canadians to make a difference, also gives nonprofit organizations an out-of-the-box solution for online fundraising. New blue and yellow Giving Works ribbons make it easy for nonprofit sellers and buyers to identify items that support a good cause. The program's Give at Checkout feature gives buyers the opportunity to make an online cash contribution to a featured nonprofit and means that nonprofit organizations can benefit from each and every purchase made on eBay.ca.

Shania Twain Auctions Off Shoes That Caused Embarrassing Fall

What a good sport Shania Twain is! The singer is turning an embarrassing tumble into money for charity by auctioning off the high heels she was wearing at the CMT Awards in June. Twain memorably fell to her hip while walking to the presentation stage, but recovered gracefully.

Current bidding is at $500 for the size six, autographed BCBG Max Azria high heels. They’re black satin with with a leather sole, and autographed on the inside of each shoe’s strap. A tassel is missing from the left heel. Proceeds go to her Shania Kids Can charity, which provides food and support to underprivileged kids in Canada through the school systems.

After the slip, Twain joked that she’s proud she’s able to perform all of her own stunts. In a video to fans, she mentioned the idea of auctioning the heels off for charity. “I never want to see those shoes again,” she says. Competition for the footwear seems to be steep; 45 bids have already been placed for the auction, which began Monday and wraps on August 22.

Twain appeared during Sunday night’s ‘CMA Music Festival’ special on ABC, but did not perform. Viewers got a look at what she’d been up to the last few years and the singer admitted to forcing herself to do some uncomfortable things. Falling on national television was likely not what she was referring to.

Just checked the bidding at 9:27 pm est and the bid is at 6,100.00 and it still has six days to go...wow!!! What a simple way to raise a lot of money...she should do it more and raise lots of money...she should clean out her closet. Wish I could afford to bid.

Remember in June when Shania Twain fell on her way up to the CMT Music Awards stage? She was on her way to present the male video of the year award, walking to the tune of her own "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," and her feet just kind of gave way. She got up and laughed it off -- because she's awesome. Later that night in a video on her website she said, "I never want to see those shoes again." And now she actually wants you to have them. So she autographed them and has put them for sale on eBay. (The proceeds from the sale will go to Shania Kids Can, which helps underprivileged children in Canada.) There's a catch, though. You need tiny feet and a gigantic bank account. These strappy BCBG satin 3-inch heels are only a Cinderella-ish size 6, and the bids already exceed $6,000. If you win, may you have better luck walking in them than she did.

This makes no sense. I wonder if some potential bidders saw that the bidding was at 1 million dollars and therefore assumed it was out of their price range and haven't gone back to see that bidding is now at $9,000.

I was lucky to find a pair just north of Toronto! I can see why Shania had issues with the shoes. They are hard to put on and fit about a half size smaller. You have to twist your foot to squeeze in through the straps and then zip up the back. I notice the pair she is auctioning off are missing a tassel. You have to pull the tassel hard to zip them up. Much higher than they appear in the photos. A challenge to walk in. But not as high as the YSL Tribute shoes she is frequently seen in.

Shania Twain Raises $9,000 With Famous Footwear

After a 63-bid eBay war, the pair of black BCBG Maxazria heels Shania Twain wore as she took a nasty stumble during this year's CMT Music Awards has sold for a whopping $9,000. The superstar placed the strappy sandals on the e-commerce auction website to benefit her charity, Shania Kids Can, which provides support and essential resources to at-risk youth in public school systems.

"I can personally relate to the effects of growing up with difficulties at home and understand the problems kids can face while trying to fit in with the other students who are not experiencing the same disadvantages in their personal lives," Shania shares on her website. "My reason for creating this program is to ensure that underprivileged children in our communities are provided and cared for during their time at school, to help prevent them from falling through the cracks. I feel luck saved me from falling through the cracks as a child and believe it's neither wise nor fair to leave the destiny of any child to luck."

Despite suffering what the Canadian-born superstar refers to as the "one of life's most embarrassing moments," Shania remains focused on her country music comeback. The singer continues to make preparations for her Still the One Las Vegas concert series. The 'Today Is Your Day' singer's highly-anticipated return to the stage will kick off in December of 2012 at Caesar's Palace.
