Country Weekly (August 20, 2012) – Future Hall of Famers

August 20, 2012 – Future Hall of Famers

Which of today’s stars might one day be elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame? Will it be Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Faith Hill?

In this special cover story, CW looks at the list of eligible candidates and makes the case for their Hall of Fame credentials. Among the many artists profiled are Tim McGraw, Shania Twain, Keith Urban and Brooks & Dunn.

The August 20 issue goes on-sale August 13.

So what if Shania had four full length albums in her career.  Michael Jackson only had 6 full length albums in his 30 year solo career.  Shania made a huge impact in country music.  Shania is the best selling female country artist of all time and opened so many doors for women in country music.  Shania is a great fit for the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Love Shania but she is not fit for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Four albums is not enough to make it in. To earn that title you as an artist should have a great output of material that other artists and the public can reference. Shania deserves an honorable mention for her achievements. Her legacy is that of a 1990s singer gone big who went into obscurity and went to Vegas to rehash her old songs. Also, the greats collaborate with a variety of other artists, songwriters and producers. Twain's mainly known for her work with Mutt Lange even if she's briefly collaborated with other people. Shania deserves her Canadian accolades because her work brought a lot of visibility to the country, and she has more relevance as a Canadian. But when you stack her up against artists who tour yearly or bi-yearly, consistently release albums and collaborate with other artists in a global/American arena she falls short. It's like putting the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for having a really hot minute when there's still artists from the 1990s that are still active like Green Day, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige and Foo Fighters.

Obviously one should take into account the quality of the music released by the artist. Shania may have only released four studio albums, but out of the four, two were unquestionably masterpieces (Woman and Come On Over) while Up is arguably a good album and her debut wasn't bad either. The former two shattered records and gave her huge hits.

Compare that to, for example, Toby Keith. I feel like his career has been hit and miss since day one. Lately he's been releasing an album every year, and they typically sound rushed so that he can meet his quota. I don't feel like he would be a good candidate for the Hall of Fame. Martina McBride also has an awesome foundation but her later releases have been super underwhelming. That's just my opinion, obviously.

What I'm getting at, though, is during Shan's career--albeit a short one--she consistently released fantastic, high-quality music. Maybe I'm biased as a Shannie fan. I'd rather have four awesome albums than twelve albums that are nothing special. /rant

True, she did change country music. Let's see what happens...Best of wishes to Shania.
