Shania Twain on bonding with her teen son: 'We talk the purpose of life'

Shania Twain is preparing to release her first new album of music in 15 years, but the Canadian country superstar hasn't been sitting idly by -- she's written an autobiography, headlined a Las Vegas residency, toured and raised her now 15-year-old-son Eja, which she calls her "favourite thing to do in life."
"Once they reach a certain age they just get past this crest of tweenhood, and once that happens they come into their own in a different way," Shania tells our Ben Mulroney in a new interview from Toronto. "There's more equality going on there... we talk politics, we talk about the purpose of life a lot more. Everything in more debth. His opinions are more educated. And so it's fun in that sense."
Those educated opinions of Eja's apparently came in handy when it came to Shania's new album Now, out Sept. 29. He even helped pick out the first single, Life's About To Get Good.
"It's a song about optimism," Shania tells Ben. "It's just about going from dark to light, and lost to found, and sad to happy. Because you know what, at the end of the tunnel, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, and that's the way I look at life."
Now also marks Shania's first album since her split from Robert "Mutt" Lange in 2010, who produced several of her successful albums, including her 1997 smash Come On Over. She's previously discussed how the split influences the personal nature of her new material.
With two musical parents, does Shania see Eja heading into the the music industry as well? "He loves to hear my music, [and] he loves me to hear his music," she says.
"He doesn't want to be a performer at all. He just wants to arrange and produce music, which he does with every waking moment of his free time," she says. "And so we share that together. And we share a lot of things together. We're good companions."
Does Shania consider herself a cool mom? Well, she stops short of claiming she's Eja's full-time pal.
"I wouldn't say that we're friends because I'm still very much a parent," she says. "But we have a good close relationship. But there's definitely times when it's like, 'Mom, I'll find my own way home, you don't have to come and get me, I'll be fine.'"
