Global superstar Shania Twain will headline the Opening Night Ceremony at the 2017 US Open to kick off the 20th anniversary celebrations of Arthur Ashe Stadium in style.
With more than 90 million albums sold worldwide, five-time GRAMMY Award winner Twain is the top-selling female country artist of all time.
Considered the reigning Queen of Country Pop, the Canadian singer-songwriter has an immediately recognizable voice and style that has captivated audiences and spanned both generations and genres.
Her performance prior to the evening session’s matches on Monday, Aug. 28, is expected to feature some of her biggest hits, as well as songs from her upcoming album entitled “NOW,” her first album since 2002, which will be released on Sept. 29.
Twain’s performance coincides with the 20th anniversary of her blockbuster album “Come On Over,” the best-selling country album of all time. It will be followed by a special rendition of the National Anthem by a performer to be named later, who will be accompanied by the FDNY Color Guard and NYPD Honor Guard for the 16th consecutive year.
Twain’s other albums include her platinum-selling 1993 debut “Shania Twain”; her GRAMMY-winning, double-diamond selling 1995 release “The Woman in Me”; and her third consecutive diamond-selling album release “UP!”
The only female to receive CMT’s Artist of a Lifetime Award, Twain has also had a string of top singles hits, including “Man! I feel Like a Woman!,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Don’t Be Stupid (You Know I Love You).”
Prior to Twain’s performance, USTA President Katrina Adams and tennis icon Billie Jean King will start the celebration of Arthur Ashe Stadium, which opened in 1997 and has served as the centerpiece of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for two decades. The ceremony will be televised live on ESPN2 in the U.S. and by a host of international broadcasters around the world.
Previous Opening Night Ceremony performers have included Phil Collins (2016), Josh Groban (2015), Fitz & the Tantrums (2014) and Lenny Kravitz (2013). Whitney Houston performed at the opening of Arthur Ashe Stadium in 1997, singing “One Moment in Time.”
Boasting a capacity of more than 23,000, Arthur Ashe Stadium became the largest tennis-only stadium in the world, allowing the Open to welcome more than half a million more fans than when its namesake won the men’s singles championship in 1968.
In 2016, the stadium added a retractable roof, banishing rain delays to the historical record and ensuring that its loyal legion of supporters would continue to experience the grandeur of US Open tennis – and again providing the ultimate showcase for the world’s finest players to complete the toughest two weeks in tennis in the highest of styles.
The article says "Prior to Twain’s performance, USTA President Katrina Adams and tennis icon Billie Jean King will start the celebration of Arthur Ashe Stadium, which opened in 1997 and has served as the centerpiece of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for two decades. The ceremony will be televised live on ESPN2 in the U.S. and by a host of international broadcasters around the world."
So it's not really clear if Shania's performance will be televised. But I'd assume it will be.

I sent a message to the US Open and asked what time the opening ceremony starts. They said tentatively 7:00pm ET. If the day matches run too long then there's a possibility that it could be later... perhaps 8:00.

Overall great performance!... first part of it the sound wasn't that great, but no fault to her. As performance went on, you could also tell her voice was getting stronger and stronger!
She looked so Beautiful, Great performance too. I loved that she sang her current singles. Can't wait to see what she has coming up in September and October.
They just did a closeup shot of Shania eating and dabbing her mouth with a napkin. The commentator just said that people don't like to be filmed as they eat.

Ironically following Shania's performance, all three of her old songs she sang are now in the iTunes top 100 Country Singles chart. None of the new stuff is even in the top 100...
For those of us that missed it, here's a YouTube link!
My thoughts:
First of all, I think probably her monitors were messed up during TDIMM. It was messy - sounded pitchy and off-tempo a bit - but agreed with honeyimhome above, not her fault (imo). LATGG sounded like it had a more country arrangement than the single/album version. Not sure why THAT wasn't pushed to country radio? Likely would not have mattered but I feel like this arrangement was much more radio friendly. And I think it exists as a recording because this sounded like band-in-a-can to me. Also I think it's pretty clear she lipped part of SWMEC and YSTO. I don't understand why they don't just transpose the older songs down far enough where she can actually sing them?
But overall it was enjoyable! :)

I really think that the performance was a bit awkward and odd
1. She can clearly sing, she clearly has it and the talents come out BUT she still is lacking in some areas that need much improvement meaning she can hit the notes but the crispness, the clarity and the rawness of pure natural talent are coming through and coming back. Her perfection of the past is in the past but today is slightly off a little because she is still struggling to get back into the groove of singing for her supper more or less. The voice is hers and the voice is spot on. She has it and we love it!
2. Visually I need to vent! What is the bleep up with the bleeping graphics in the background? What artistic or viewpoint is that? During MIFLAW is always that stupid run down house. I do not get it and sometimes her graphics are not clicking or connecting with the audience or who she is singing too. What story is she trying to say about a run down old house with a girl power anthem? With LATGG what on God's green earth is that graphics suppose to mean and what message? She seriously needs to fire the computer graphics artist and connect with the audience. It's just that the video for LATGG is spot on and perfection but the graphics during the performance and when she performed her hits needs to connect and click with the song, message, artistic viewpoint and the vibe. I am sorry I am typing this but I need to vent.
3. Why in the world would she sing "YSTO" when she has many more hits? I wouldn't have sung that one until the tour because is she is that comfortable on stage singing about her ex then more power to her but she could have sung FAFA, TWIM etc.
4. Her outfit was amazing and very fabulous but something was off about it. I mean it looks fabulous but something was not right.
5. We seriously need to understand what "SWMEC" is all about because I know when I am swinging with my arms in the air my eyes aren't closed but I think that might be the message but I am seriously somewhat lost on the whole subtle message or connect with her new material? Can anyone please explain to me what that song is about because I hope the video when it is released connect the dots in my head. I don't know but I love that violin part and the rock power behind it.
Now I am sorry I am posting this but this is what I felt and saw. I know she made some mistakes with the lyrics and something was off about it. Did anyone else notice the whole Arthur Ashe Stadium was not filled and there were empty seats? Why didn't they have her perform when the whole darn thing was filled with the pictures I see on Google? Please I am not trying to tear her apart but some solid feedback for her to read could help her and we need to be all on the same page, keep pushing the new material because we got Demi, Taylor, Miley, Kesha and a few other female artist dropping new material becoming number one on all charts from the days of Billboards when a cassette/cd means something to the digital age of today. We seriously need to push push the new material to break records and the get the music industry back where it was or something. I love our DIVA! but.......... just asking somethings
I find the performance enjoyable, but think her voice wasn't very strong. You could clearly tell which parts were live and which were mimed on pre-recorded live vocals. She looked stunning as always though!
The teaser - I think this is the "Roll Me On The River" intro. (Maybe the next single?)
The performance - Overall, it was a good entertainment! She is again lookin' hot and those legs, just so sexy! She did struggle to some songs but she is still the one! There were lipsync parts and she forgot lyrics in SWMEC but it was handled nicely. Most likely, these maybe the songs she will sing in Hyde Park.
Ooh, if that's the River intro it sounds good! I'm excited to hear the rest of the album. Also I'm probably in the minority on this but I would much rather hear her sing the new stuff than the old stuff. She could replace a lot of the COO stuff from her set with new songs and I would be happy (maybe even some of the TWIM stuff but those songs are more fun imo). When I saw Up! Tour, she did 3 songs from I think - Up, IGGG, and Pretty Face. So I hope she focuses a lil more on the new stuff this tour.

Earlier today, Shania posted a short video on Instagram Stories celebrating her birthday last night at the US Open. I think her son Eja appears at the end.
Can anyone please explain to me what SWMEC song means?
According to Shania: "Swinging With My Eyes Closed" is about fighting back against pain. "The fighter in me wrote that song," she says. "I was thinking of a boxer taking a swing, or a baby first coming out with his eyes and fists closed. They can't even see yet and they're swinging with their eyes closed."

Shania Twain Brings Her Comeback to the U.S. Open: “I’ve Learned That I’m a Fighter”
The country singer is preparing to release her first album in 15 years.
By Paul Chi | Vanity Fair | August 29, 2017
Shania Twain is back, and it’s been a long time coming. Fifteen years since her last studio album, Twain is preparing for the September 29 release of Now, and she’s not doing it quietly. Twain performed at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens on Monday night, during the gala opening night for the U.S. Open, for a crowd that included Alec Baldwin, Pharrell Williams, Megyn Kelly and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Twain, who was also celebrating her 52nd birthday, told Vanity Fair before the performance that the album is “very personal and very pure,” reflecting both on her recent divorce and a bout with Lyme disease that almost ended her career.
“It was a very important thing for me to do for myself as an artist to tell my own story, and express my emotions and opinions and exercise that independence,” said Twain, who became the best-selling solo female artist in the world when her third album, Come on Over, sold over 40 million copies. “So I stepped out of my comfort zone and it was really scary taking on that challenge of responsibility alone. But, it’s already been very rewarding to have overcome that anxiety of getting started and jumping in and reflecting on the challenging times that I went through.”
Twain’s 14-year marriage to longtime producing partner Robert “Mutt” Lange ended in 2008, after she discovered he was allegedly having an affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The split became tabloid fodder and continued to make headlines in 2010 when Twain revealed she was engaged to Thiébaud’s ex-husband, Frederic. The two got married in 2011.
Since her last album Twain also lost her ability to speak and sing due to dysphonia, a vocal-cord disorder which she attributes to complications from Lyme disease. She still suffers from dysphonia, but physical therapy and long warm-up sessions before each performance have helped her regain her voice.
“I’ve learned so much about myself over the years. I’ve been through a lot, but I’m in a good place,” Twain said Monday. “I’ve learned that I’m a fighter—I don’t give up. There’s a lot of determination in me.”
Once inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, Twain performed a medley of her hits as well as new songs “Life’s About to Get Good” and “Swingin’ with My Eyes Closed.”
