Grammy winner Shania Twain to perform at Freedom Mobile Grey Cup Halftime Show
CFL | August 10, 2017
OTTAWA — With just over three months to go until the 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw kicks off in Ottawa, the Canadian Football League announced today that the top-selling female country artist of all time, Shania Twain, will headline the Freedom Mobile Grey Cup Halftime Show on November 26th at TD Place in Ottawa. Canada’s largest annual sporting event will be broadcast live on TSN, RDS, ESPN2, BT Sport and on TSN Radio and Sirius XM radio beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
Twain’s Grey Cup performance celebrates her triumphant return and will follow the highly-anticipated release of her fifth full-length studio album, NOW, out September 29th. Solely written and co-produced by Twain, NOW marks her first album release since 2002’s UP!, the same year she first performed at the Grey Cup Halftime Show (Edmonton, 2002).
“It’s an absolute honour to return to the Grey Cup stage in the nation’s capital during Canada’s 150th birthday,” said Twain. “I’m thrilled to be coming home and being a part of the country’s biggest annual party.”
“Shania is a massive Canadian icon and a global superstar, so we are so excited that she will help us cap off such a significant year for our country at the 105th Grey Cup in Ottawa,” added Randy Ambrosie, CFL Commissioner. “This promises to be a fantastic event and a special performance for our fans and viewers across Canada and all around the world. I can’t wait to get the party started at my first Grey Cup as Commissioner.”
Shania is a five-time Grammy Award-winner and the reigning Queen of Country Pop. With more than 90 million albums sold worldwide and U.S. sales topping 34.5 million, Shania remains the top-selling female country artist of all time. Shania’s albums include her Platinum-selling 1993 debut, SHANIA TWAIN; the Grammy Award-winning, Double Diamond-selling 1995 release, THE WOMAN IN ME; COME ON OVER, the best-selling studio album in Soundscan history by a female artist in any genre and the best-selling country album of all time with over 40 million units sold worldwide; and UP!, Shania’s third consecutive Diamond-selling album release.
Recognizing her indelible impact and achievements in music, Shania is the first and only female artist to receive CMT’s Artist of a Lifetime Award and the Country Music Hall of Fame recently opened the Shania Twain: Rock This Country exhibit. Shania was also honored with the Icon Award at Billboard’s Women in Music ceremony. Shania’s hits include “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “You’re Still the One,” and “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!”.
“Shania Twain is a Canadian legend and a musical star who will light up the Freedom Mobile Grey Cup Halftime Show,” said Chethan Lakshman, VP, External Affairs, Shaw Communications. “We are pleased to work with our partners at the CFL to bring Canadians and our customers exceptional experiences, and we can’t wait for Shania to bring the house down in Ottawa on November 26th.”
The 105th Grey Cup presented by Shaw will be played Sunday, November 26, 2017 in Ottawa at TD Place. This year’s championship will be the first played in Ottawa since 2004 and the first in TD Place Stadium, which was rebuilt for the successful debut of the Ottawa REDBLACKS in 2014.
The teams are now set. It will be the Calgary Stampeders vs. Toronto Argonauts playing in the Grey Cup CFL championship game next Sunday at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Coverage begins at 6:00pm ET on TSN (Canada) and ESPN2 (USA). The football game starts around 6:30pm ET so Shania's halftime show performance will be around 8:00pm ET.
Shania will most likely sing 4 songs. I'm guessing "Life's About To Get Good", "Swingin' With My Eyes Closed", "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!"

The chase for the 105th Grey Cup has come down to its final stretch. Only the Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts are left standing with hopes to claim the CFL's most prestigious honour on the line.
Calgary, who finished the regular season with a 13-4-1 record, is considered the favourite in the matchup. The Bo Levi Mitchell-led Stampeders defeated the Edmonton Eskimos in the Western Final and are a win away from erasing last season's dissappointing finish, where they lost to Ottawa in the Grey Cup. Now, they receive their second chance at a title. It is the third time in the past four years that Calgary has appeared in the annual event.
Toronto finished the season atop of the East Division. With a record of 9-9, Toronto clawed their way to the Grey Cup. Now, against the Stampeders' high-powered offence, the Argonauts will look to add their league-leading 16 Grey Cup championships.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 105th Grey Cup.

During the 90th Grey Cup between the Montreal Alouettes and Edmonton Eskimos, Twain put on a spectacle during her Grey Cup debut.
Calgary / Toronto season series
Calgary defeated Toronto in both regular season contests this season. On Aug. 3, the Stampeders won 41-24 behind the flawless play of Mitchell. He threw three touchdowns in that matchup. Two weeks after their first matchup, both teams met again. It was a similar script as Calgary held Toronto to a touchdown in the lopsided 23-7 victory.
Wouldn't she sing who's Gonna be your girl if that's the current single in Canada? I mean I have yet to hear it in country radio in Canada lol
That would make sense but what has Shania's team done so far that makes sense while promoting this album. LOL! It's actually one of my favorite songs on the album.

Do you think Shania could be a feature artist on the Super Bowl again?
I don't know. Country artists usually don't perform at the Super Bowl. This year Justin Timberlake is performing for the second time.
While you are correct about country artists not typically doing so, but do we still consider Shania country? I mean she seems to completely disregard Country awards shows and things revolving around the country music scene. To me i think she would be one of the only ”country” artists to be able to pull off an appearance at the Super Bowl. Just my thoughts. She has enough fans outside of country to do so, but not with this new material that’s she got.

Seems like she was at home in the bahamas. Bastian Baker posted a photo at her house. They seem to hang out often, or at least he goes to her house in the bahamas often. I hope he is the opener for the Now tour.
In the French Radio 98.5 interview, she said she's singing two classics and one song from Now
ONE song from NOW??? That's crazy!!! (But I'm not surprised.) Great way to promote a new album in front of a huge multi-country audience! Let me guess, it will be "Life's About To Get Good".
Video clip by someone at the rehearsal. Looks like Shania will be singing "That Don't Impress Me Much" and "Life's About To Get Good". The third song must be "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!".
Why is she singing life's about to get good? That does not seem like the right kinda song for a Grey Cup performance? Also I'm Gonna getcha good would be perfect live, Rock this country is also good
Stellar. Absolutely STELLAR! She sounded awesome. She looked terrific. Her outfit and hair and make-up were simply perfect. The song choices were spot on--most artists only perform one current hit at shows like this (e.g., Gaga with Million Reasons at the Super Bowl). The dogsled entrance was a nice touch. I still think we're in for an exciting year. Her confidence is building. Can't wait for the tour!!

Shania Twain melts Grey Cup halftime with fiery performance
By Jane Stevenson | Toronto Sun | November 26, 2017
Shania Twain Grey Cup half -time show RATING: ***1/2 (3.5 out of five) TD Place, Ottawa
Man! Shania felt like a woman – and a distinctly Canadian one – at Sunday night’s Grey Cup half-time show.
And, really, hats off to the homegrown country crossover queen Shania Twain for managing to pull off some sense of glamour given the horrendous conditions – she was playing in the middle of a blizzard in an outdoor stadium in Ottawa at night.
The 52-year-old performer certainly knew how to make the most Canadian of entrances.
Twain, who last played the Grey Cup half- time show in 2002 in Edmonton, entered the field at the TD Centre via a dog sled and was escorted to her stage by a team of red-suited Mounties.
Dressed in a cleavage-revealing, form-fitting, sparky red jumpsuit, with high-heeled red fur boots and a matching red fur jacket, red leather gloves, and her hair big, blonde and in ringlets, Twain looked like an ornament ready for a Christmas tree.
The sports panel that followed Twain’s performance said they hadn’t seen the weather that bad at a Grey Cup in 21 years.
But given her hardscrabble Northern Ontario beginnings in the town of Timmins, Twain was certainly the right performer to have the right stuff for the white stuff.
“I love the snow – it’s so beautiful!” Twain said as she successfully wrapped up her three-song 15-minute set without falling once.
“I feel like a Canadian!”
Twain kicked off her set with the oldie-but-goodie That Don’t Impress Me Much which famously namechecks Brad Pitt.
Despite having her first album in 15 years, NOW, come out at the end of September, Twain waited until the second song for a new one – that frankly, everyone’s already forgotten about – Life’s About to Get Good, as she gamely climbed the stairs on her stage, successfully navigating what could have been a disastrous move given the inclement weather.
The last song was Man! I Feel Like A Woman! and, as the sports panel put it: “I think she may have melted some snow down there.”
Twain, who has won five Grammys, sold more than 90 million albums worldwide and remains the top-selling female country artist of all time, will hit the road next year with her NOW tour.
But during the Grey Cup, Bell Media made sure to promote her appearance as a celebrity mentor on the first episode of CTV’s The Launch on Jan. 10 too.
Great performance overall - she sounded great! Didn't love the outfit and hair but was not the weirdest we've seen her wear. Not sure what the standard is but I would've preferred to see a longer medley like Super Bowl Halftime shows. I don't necessarily need to hear the second verse to TDIMM again. Play shorter versions of TDIMM, LATGG, WGSTD, SWMEC, YSTO, and MIFLAW. I just think playing two classics IN FULL was not a great use of time especially (1) when she could have done a live premiere of WGSTD and (2) this performance was super hyped for a long time.
Also, re: lip syncing (/singing over playback), I *think* she's either getting better at switching from pre-recorded to live vocals and/OR she has newer tracks she's lip-syncing to. Some of the notes sounded a little TOO on pitch but not exactly like the studio versions. The only time it's really obvious here is during the verses of LATGG. Also is the band live? I know band-in-a-can is fairly common at these, but then again there was a whole rehearsal production.
TDIMM sounds good as a show opener. Would not be surprised if she opened the Now Tour with it.

Fitting entrance: Shania Twain arrives on dog sled for snowy Grey Cup performance
By Lori Ewing | The Canadian Press | November 26, 2017
It was a fitting entrance for Canada's country music queen on Sunday's snowy Grey Cup.
Shania Twain entered a snow-covered TD Place Stadium on a dog sled for her halftime show at the CFL championship game, to the delight of a bundled up crowd of 36,000 football fans.
Conjuring images of Tina Turner with a head of big curls, and red fur coat and boots over a glittering red and silver catsuit, Twain opened with her 1998 hit "That Don't Impress Me Much."
Strutting the stage against a backdrop of red and white fireworks and spotlights, and under a blanket of falling snow, the 52-year-old from Timmins, Ont., performed three songs in all.
She sang "Life's About to Get Good" from her new album Now. Released in September, it's her first full-length album in 15 years, and fifth of her career.
She capped her show with her 1997 hit "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!"
Twain, who's the top-selling female country artist of all time and a five-time Grammy award winner, is embarking on a cross-Canada tour in 2018.
Sunday wasn't her first football halftime show. She performed during the break of both the 2002 Grey Cup and the 2003 Super Bowl.
Canadian hip-hop artist SonReal performed in the pre-game show, while Toronto-based singing group Choir! Choir! Choir! led the crowd in the singing of O Canada.
