Shania Twain lands coveted Legends Slot on final day of 2024 UK Glastonbury Festival

Cyndi Lauper also had sound issues the other day at Glastonbury.

She had great energy and looked fantastic and the crowd loved her but I agree, she was sounding very pinched in her voice, her range was even more narrow than normal, and she seemed to run out of breath at times. Wondering if nerves might’ve gotten to her a bit.

Im so pleased for her. I think overall she did really well.

I don’t know why she insists on doing the short acapella type parts at the start of songs, I think it shows her voice to be weak at times

Thought she looked amazing, no awful wig or strange outfit

The crowd at times didn’t seem that into it, maybe that was just me that felt that?

Think it needed some pyro, a special guest and at least one costume change.

So pleased she did well, I was nervous for her. Hope the reviews are good

I feel for her, The sound issues were the problem. The frustrating part is people think she's the problem but in reality it is the sound system. Hopefully she doesn't get discouraged and continue on with her touring. She did great other than the sound issues. Shouldn't Brent know these issues before she goes out? I am always hearing the back up singer sounds horrible. He was also horrible in the Queen of Me tour

She's been getting criticism for sound issues for years now so I highly doubt it'll discourage her from continuing to tour. I am glad she's singing live a lot these days though (even if it is rough).

I saw her two days ago at the Malahide Castle…her live vocals were not perfect but she’s still able to entertain and she still got the stage presence. She’s more confident with her voice and she’s finally singing most of her concerts with little help from backing tracks. I only would have made some changes in the setlist…Ka Ching was probably one her most popular hits in Europe, why not add it to the setlist? It’s surely more popular than Ain’t no Quitter..

I have friends on vacation in the UK who are at the Glastonbury Festival. They aren't Shania fans but attend a lot of concerts. They said Shania's performance was absolutely terrible.

Glastonbury is notoriously poor when it comes to sound issues. I've only ever watched it on the TV,  but have seen plenty of big hitters struggle there with the sound mix. I guess outside gigs of that size are always going to have acoustic problems. I would imagine if you were actually there it would sound even worse than through the TV, especially if you were watching from the back of the crowd. You would think with the tech available today they would be able to do better though. I wouldn't imagine you can sound check or rehearse as there are too many other acts and time constraints. I would imagine you can't use your own sound crew as well.
I enjoyed it though. The crowd looked vast, must've been in excess of100,000, maybe 125,000. I would've thought she must've got the biggest crowd at the festival, Coldplay would've drew a huge crowd too. I think they sell about 200,000 tickets to attend the whole event.

That BBC article was very good and fair. The BBC have really got behind her to be fair and I think despite the sound problems it has all worked out well. It was on prime time live terrestrial TV over here and will have been seen by a big audience. I think they will have judged her performance a bit more kindly than the online zealots.

Apparently there have been a lot of audio issues based on the Cyndi Lauper article that I read.

All the critics reviews I have read so far have been pretty positive. Just seems the stuff online on social media and messages boards have been negative. I suppose It's easy to be nasty or abusive behind an invisable persona.

not so bad but it’s very obvious that she’s singing the lower part during the chorus.

She definitely improved as the show went on. I'm not sure if the audience knew all the songs, a lot of casual music fans probably only know a few songs of hers. She's more known for the Come On Over era over here.
I read comments online about people saying she looked a bit overwhelmed by the experience, but Shania is very experienced about playing big gigs outdoors. I wonder if she has played in front of a crowd that big before though? I read some stupid comments about her sounding drunk as well. That's ridiculous as Shania is not even known for drinking and she is way too professional for any of that.

Shania Twain in tears after Glastonbury set as she admits that she 'needs validation'

Shania Twain was visibly in tears as she spoke to Jo Whiley after her Glastonbury set.

By Chloe Govan | Express - UK | June 30, 2024

Reading the excerpts from this post-performance interview breaks my heart a bit. We love you, Shania!

I'm hurting a lot for her. The comments online are extremely nasty. Even one of her band members on Instagram is coming to her defense and praising her.  It's getting frustrating I just wish people would leave her alone. Most of the nasty comments are from women. I love her more than ever after tonight. My heart breaks because I think she sounds better than ever but the sounding was off which was out of her control. I even seen a video of her on Tiktok with her looking back stage in disbelief of how bad the sound was. I hope this does not stop her from continuing on. Love you Shania.

I think she does really well in a controlled stable environment like Vegas where her team has direct control over the sound and it's consistent each night. Looking back on the QoM tour the nights where she had the most sound issues were festivals like the ACL and Tortuga. I think at these festivals there isn't time to rehearse and do a proper sound check and the sound requirements are very different for a theater in Vegas than a large outdoor music festival. I really like that she's singing live but I think the NOW tour/Let's Go era playback for the chorus of MIFLAW should be added back rather than the lower harmony or lower the song to a key where she can hit those notes live. Even the BBC article mentioned she was singing the lower harmony. A lot of the nasty comments online were on videos of YSTO which is sad because it's one of the songs she's very consistent with and sings well each show. And I agree with others that Paul's voice doesn't fit with hers. It was really bad during the QoM tour and they are mixing it better now but you can still pick out his voice on most of the songs.

I worry that based on all the negative feedback she'll overcorrect and go back to 100% playback which I don't want to see.

Im very happy to see that the journalists in the UK give her the respect that is due. Extremely proud she is singing 100% live again and she has been sounding great in Vegas for example, however the sound mix yesterday was horrible (like at many festivals she played at the last couple of years). I feel (and felt) very sorry for her seeing it go down like this

I think it would really help her if she had a button or something on her mic so it switches to lipsync whenever necessary, although I hope she never goes back to 100% lipsync, I rather hear her imperfections it’s part of her story and shows her resilience.

I'm pretty sure she'll have got a big boost from this as most of the coverage has been positive. Sure the stuff online has been a bit negative, but sadly the internet and social media does attract haters and naysayers in general.
Be interesting what she was paid to do the slot as I read that Coldplay got a quarter of a million. I know that technically Shania wasn't headlining as she was in the Legends slot, but in most people's eyes she was the biggest star there. Don't get me wrong as Coldplay are a huge band and I do like their early stuff, but they are a safe choice who have done that festival more times than anyone in history now.
There's plenty of big names over the years who have turned it down as Glastonbury has in the past never paid the big money. I think U2 have only ever did it once about 10 or 12 years back. Maybe the sound issues have put the big names off as they don't want to sound terrible on TV and have their image and name tarnished.
Madonna has been approached numerous times and she's never said yes yet. I would imagine she'd want a few million to do it and I'm not sure if she actually plays live or just mimes these days. Taylor Swift I'm sure they'll go for in the future, but these big acts can make more money and have more control doing their own shows.

Looks like this concert was worst than the average. I was watching some other concert's videos from this summer UK tour and also from the recent performance in Canada, and although they are not perfect, they are way much better than this one. TDIMM I Glastonbury is really hard to listen.

I'm glad the press is giving her support. She has major presentations still this summer, like the Andrea Boccelli one (many top vocal performers there ) and the Party in The Park in London, also very iconic moment.

In the world of Dua Lipas and Coldplays perfect pitches it's not easy to be imperfect.

Btw, last week I was watching Celine Dion's new documentary on Prime Video, with all her struggle to sing again I was thinking, "Call Shania, and learn to be imperfectly happy like her" . 😊

Cheers

Marco.

I'm glad you pointed that Tiktok video out as I watched it yesterday and felt bad. I seriously believe the sound was out of her control. It frustrates me when people give her an extremely difficult time when you can tell she's working hard these last few years. She's close to 60 and as a fan I'm enjoying every moment of it. Music wise she's sounding better than ever from some of the previous clips I've heard. I think some great music is to come and many other surprises. I do expect the touring part to slow down a bit after the Vegas residency. I think she's at a stage where she wants to make more records and who know maybe a few other things. One thing is for certain people are so dam nasty these days. Her looks, her voice, her style and it continues. Like they can get lost. She looks hot and I love her level of energy.

Coleen Nolan has pointed out the tell-tale sign that superstar Shania Twain had 'major issues' at Glastonbury Festival 2024.

The country star made her Worthy Farm debut on Sunday afternoon and kicked off her set in front of thousands of fans with her iconic hit That Don't Impress Me Much. However, many fans watching from home were not so impressed as she took to the stage. Music fans were left begging festival bosses to make a huge change due to the sound quality, which saw many stars appear to be plagued with audio errors during their sets over the festival.

Talking about Glastonbury on Loose Women, Coleen, 59, who has performed for years with The Nolans, said of Shania's set: "I was watching Shania thinking she is having major issues as she was constantly pulling the ear piece out and putting it back in. Straight away, I thought: 'She can't hear!' I could tell she couldn't hear, as she wasn't in tune on some of it. But again, I thought, at least she's proving that it's live!

"The problem nowadays is it can also end your career as people are so quick to judge. I always think that the sound can actually, could potentially, kill someone's career." It comes as many Glastonbury viewers took to Twitter, now X, after Sunday's performance.

Real reason for Shania Twain's Glastonbury sound issues as musician speaks out

Canadian singer-songwriter Lindsay Ell was on stage with Shania Twain during her Glastonbury Festival set on Sunday night, which drew concerns from fans who spotted that she struggled with her in-ear monitors amid patchy sound quality. However, in an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk, Lindsay has dismissed the technical difficulties as something that a seasoned pro has no fears about.

She added that, as someone who has been in the music business since the age of ten herself and has racked up a quarter of a century worth of live shows, "there's one thing you can guarantee - nothing is going to be perfect." She mused: "Sometimes when there is a live broadcast, there are just so many moving pieces, and especially when you're putting so many bands on one stage so quickly that we don't have time to do the same sound checks and set up that we do on a normal show."

The songstress, who is bringing her own headlining country music show to London in a few days time, added: "I just thought Shania handled it like a pure pro. She obviously is a legend in her own right and has done this for so long and is a true veteran in these things."

Meanwhile, she added that the adrenalin rush caused by the sound struggles only motivated the band to work harder. "I wasn't nervous at all. It was more, if anything, that sometimes when you need to fight a little harder for the show, you play better.

"It's like you need to dig a little bit deeper to hear something or to play something or to muscle through when everything isn't sounding absolutely perfect." She added: "I really think it is an adrenaline thing in the most beautiful way."
