Later… with Jools Holland opened this series back in May with the Squeeze reunion that everyone had quietly assumed would never happen. Since then the current run has worked its way through a booking list that covers a lot of ground.

Shania Twain is at Alexandra Palace Theatre tonight, five Grammy wins behind her, for a chat with Jools and a performance of “You’re Still the One” from 1997. That song spent long enough on the charts in the late nineties that hearing it played live at Late Night feels like a minor event.

Sam Smith arrives fresh from the “To Be Free” residency run that took them through Warsaw in Brooklyn last autumn and San Francisco’s reopened Castro Theatre earlier this year. Those intimate shows let them reset after the arena years, and the version of Sam Smith currently doing press feels noticeably different from the one touring at scale.

Arlo Parks is back on the show having built steadily since her Mercury win. Also on the bill are Canadian prog-rock duo Angine de Poitrine and Newcastle jazz quintet Knats, which is the kind of booking range that Later has always treated as a selling point rather than a mixed message.
