Cinemark Debuts Exclusive Music Featurette Showcasing Shania Twain’s “Soldier”

New song is in support of DreamWorks Pictures’ “Thank You for Your Service,” opening on October 27

Business Wire | September 5, 2017

PLANO, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cinemark Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CNK), a leader in the motion-picture exhibition industry, has partnered with DreamWorks Pictures and Universal Pictures to debut a brand-new music featurette for the upcoming film “Thank You for Your Service,” which showcases Shania Twain’s new song “Soldier.” The special look will play exclusively in Cinemark locations starting September 7. “Thank You for Your Service” arrives in theaters on October 27, 2017.

“We are honored to be a part of this unique project,” stated James Meredith, Cinemark’s SVP of Marketing and Communications. “The excitement for Shania’s new song, coupled with the anticipation for ‘Thank You for Your Service’ made us very eager to showcase this exclusive music featurette for our guests.”

"I’m so proud that my new song ‘Soldier’ is part of the film ‘Thank You for Your Service,’” said Shania Twain. “I know you’ll find it as powerful and important as I do.”

“We are very grateful to our partners at Cinemark for making this special project possible,” said John C. Hall, Executive Vice President, Distribution & Marketing, Universal Pictures. “Shania’s song is anthemic to this story, and we are certain audiences will embrace this poignant film.”

DreamWorks Pictures’ “Thank You for Your Service” follows a group of U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life, while living with the memory of a war that threatens to destroy them long after they’ve left the battlefield.

Starring an ensemble cast led by Miles Teller, Haley Bennett, Joe Cole, Amy Schumer, Beulah Koale, Scott Haze, Keisha Castle-Hughes, Brad Beyer, Omar J. Dorsey and Jayson Warner Smith, the drama is based on the bestselling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and author David Finkel. Jason Hall, who wrote the screenplay of “American Sniper,” makes his directorial debut with “Thank You for Your Service” and also serves as its screenwriter. Jon Kilik (“The Hunger Games” series, “Babel”) produced the film. www.ThankYouForYourServiceMovie.com

The song isn't in the trailer. It will be in the featurette that will play in theaters during the movie previews.

So it will not be in the movie itself (maybe final credits)?

That's still unclear. But according to the press release it sounds like the song will only be in the featurette.

Thank you, Tommy! I'm still trying to understand the term featurette. It seems to mean a behind the scenes video. It's a new term for me.

Weekend Box Office - Late Night Update

Deadline | October 27, 2017

...Older adult wide entries that hoped to vie for awards contention — DreamWorks/Universal’s Thank You for Your Service and Paramount/Black Bear’s Suburbicon are dying at this point in time with respectively $3.75M and $3M.

On social media, RelishMix observed in advance a divided reaction to Thank You for Your Service: ”Many Fans on social are praising what appears to be an accurate portrayal of military life and delight in a film that shows veterans in a positive manner. However, many who have a personal connection to the war or troops who served, expressed finding the story heavy. Many are divided of the topic of warfare which could confirm this is a politically charged film.”

While Thank You for Your Service was made for a modest estimated cost of $20M with targeted P&A toward the Red States, it’s not bringing in its demo in an American Sniper type of way even though the pic was directed by that pic’s Oscar-nominated screenwriter Jason Hall.

In addition RelishMix calls out the Shania Twain song “Soldier” heard on the pic’s soundtrack as a huge miss. The song was #1 on the charts a few weeks prior. “In a featurette, Shania spoke – off camera – about the song. Prior to the release, Shania also had a message that played before the trailer featuring the song in some theaters…That said, it’s good that the campaign benefited from this music video posted to Shania’s VEVO channel on YouTube (drawing 211K view). However, it’s a considerable miss for the campaign that Twain did not talk about the film specifically on any of her official pages, nor did the film's official FB page post her clip.”

"RelishMix calls out the Shania Twain song “Soldier” heard on the pic’s soundtrack as a huge miss." ("Soldier" is NOT on the movie's soundtrack or on the movie credits at the end. It's only in the featurette/trailer video.)

"The song was #1 on the charts a few weeks prior." (They must mean Shania's album NOW was #1, not the song "Soldier".)

You left out part of the quote:

In addition RelishMix calls out the Shania Twain song “Soldier” heard on the pic’s soundtrack as a huge miss in regards to hooking a bigger crowd. However, it’s a considerable miss for the campaign that Twain did not talk about the film specifically on any of her official pages, nor did the official FB page post her clip.

It makes it sound as though they described the song as a miss.  Rather, they mean it was a missed marketing opportunity that both teams failed to tie their projects together.

The writer must have gone back and added it...
