Shania Twain Dances With Don Johnson in ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Teaser | Video
The country music star will guest appear on the Joshua Jackson ABC drama from Ryan Murphy
By Kayla Cobb | The Wrap | August 26, 2024
It wouldn’t be a Ryan Murphy without a killer lineup of guest stars, and ABC’s upcoming “Doctor Odyssey” has a great one. Country music legend Shania Twain will guest star on the drama, which premieres on Sept. 26.
Twain even briefly appears in the first teaser for the drama. “Doctor, welcome aboard the ‘Odyssey,’” Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson) says in the two-minute long clip. “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream, and that’s why you’re here.”
“I’m in,” Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) says in response.
As they have this exchange, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys plays in the background as a heart rate monitor can be heard increasing in speed. When the monitor is at its most rapid, the drama cranks up.
In rapid succession, the teaser shows Dr. Bankman performing CPR, someone falling off the railing of the ship, Twain twirling on the dance floor in a sequined dress, and a dangerous storm that sends the crew flying. Watch the full teaser below.
At the moment, little is known about Twain’s role, though she appears to be playing a wealthy guest on the luxury liner.” Created in the same vein as “9-1-1,” “Doctor Odyssey” is a high-octane disaster procedural that takes place on the deck of a luxury cruise ship.
Twain’s previous acting credits include the 2019 John Travolta feature “Trading Paint,” the 2020 Christian drama “I Still Believe,” and Mrs. Potts in 2022’s live ABC production “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration.”
Ryan Murphy executive produces the series via Ryan Murphy Television. Eric Paquette, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Nissa Diederich also serve as EPs. Paris Barclay directs and executive produces. 20th Television is the studio.
“Doctor Odyssey” premieres Sept. 26 on ABC, before streaming on Hulu.
Ryan Murphy’s ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Trailer Reveals Cruise Ship Catastrophe and Guest Star Shania Twain
By Selome Hailu | Variety | August 26, 2024
“Doctor Odyssey,” Ryan Murphy‘s upcoming ABC drama starring Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson, has a new cast member: Shania Twain.
The country singer’s guest starring role was revealed in a new trailer that gives a first look at the medical procedural’s high pressure cruise ship environment.
Per the series’ official logline, “Max (Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder. It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”
The trailer sees Max welcomed onto the Odyssey by captain Robert Massey (Johnson), who tells him, “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here. Keep these dreamers safe.
Under Robert’s narration, the Beach Boy’s “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” plays — interrupted by eerie sound cues — as things begin to go wrong aboard the ship: a man collapses beside the pool as two nurses (Soo and Teale) roll a stretcher towards him; a woman convulses in a hospital bed; another woman watches a man fall backwards off of the ship.
Separately, Shania Twain appears as Robert’s dance partner in a party on deck.
“It’s not a question of when you encounter waves, but what you do when they come up,” Robert continues over a shot of the ship passing through what looks to be a major storm as the crew braces for impact. “Keep breathing,” Max says to a man who’s been rescued and pulled into a lifeboat.

Here is the promo that aired at the end of the first episode of "Doctor Odyssey" last Thursday night. It shows another glimpse of Shania and other guest stars this season. So we still don't know which episode Shania is on and when it will air. This week's episode is "Singles Week". It's possible Shania will be on since she is seen dancing with the ship's captain.

New ‘Doctor Odyssey’ Photos Reveal More ‘Singles Week’ Guest Stars
By Amanda Bell | TV Insider | October 1, 2024
At the end of Doctor Odyssey‘s pilot, Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) asks his new colleagues if it’s always theme week on board The Odyssey, and, well, the answer seems to be yes. Because this Thursday’s (October 3) new episode is titled “Singles Week,” and it is chock full of A-list guest stars.
In the video teaser look-ahead at the show’s sophomore sailing, we saw everyone from Shania Twain to John Stamos fluttering around the ship, and in these brand new episodic photos, we see a few more of the famous faces joining the fold for the Ryan Murphy medical drama.
Scroll through the photos below to see a glimpse at what’s ahead when the show hits the high seas again on Thursday night.
The one and only Shania Twain is in the house (glittering in gold, no less) in this sneak peek photo.
Shania was in 5 scenes during the 1-hour show. She played a widow who went on a singles cruise with her granddaughter and hooked up with the ship's captain (played by Don Johnson). I thought her acting was very good.

'Doctor Odyssey' Episode 2 Recap: Dive Into a Wild Singles Week
By Maggie Lovitt | Collider | October 4, 2024
Recap with Shania...
The Captain’s Broken Heart Is Mended on 'Doctor Odyssey'
One aspect of the premiere that I struggled with was the fact that we didn’t really get to meet Captain Massey, and this week’s episode delivered on his backstory. As the pair dance the night away, the Captain reveals that, much like Shania Twain’s “glam-mom,” he’s a widower. His wife died from cancer a year ago, and she was his “everything.” The pair bond over their shared personal tragedy, and their night of dancing turns into an eventful meal in the captain’s quarters the next day.
Unfortunately for Captain Massey, not only is it his week to reveal his tragic backstory, it’s also his week to be a patient. As they enjoy their meal of oysters and reminisce about their late spouses, the Captain keels over and is rushed into the operating room with what the team believes to be a heart attack. However, much like with Kelly, once they run a few tests on him, they’re stumped by the true underlying issue.
Toward the end of the episode, once his blood work comes back and officially rules out a heart attack, Max works out that the Captain is likely dealing with Broken Heart Syndrome, which he scoffs off as a totally fictitious illness. But it is a real condition, and Max prescribes him some medicine that will hopefully help him manage it. Luckily, Shania Twain proves to be exactly what the doctor ordered too. Despite being part of the reason for his bout of cardiomyopathy, the two widowers give it another shot at romance before the week is up, sharing a kiss and a “happy ending” before parting ways.
On the latest episode of Doctor Odyssey, a medical drama set on a ship called The Odyssey, the vessel hosted an event called Singles Week, where all sorts of romantic dalliances went down.
Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson), the captain of ship, caught the attention of a particularly special guest on board – that person being none other than music icon Shania Twain, best known for hits including Man! I Feel Like A Woman! and That Don’t Impress Me Much.
Of course, the singer wasn’t playing herself, but a character coming on board the ship, who’s encouraged to take part in Singles Week by her granddaughter.
Minutes into the episode, Shania, 59, says to her on-screen granddaughter: ‘I don’t know how I let you talk me into this. A singles cruise? I’m having heart palpitations.’
Her granddaughter responds: ‘It’s called being excited and don’t worry, I will be right here the entire time Grandma.’
‘Doctor Odyssey’: Shania Twain Falls for Don Johnson and Plays a ‘Glamma’
By Hope Sloop | Decider | October 5, 2024
Man! I feel like a “Glamma.”
ABC’s newest Ryan Murphy-produced series, Doctor Odyssey, aired its second episode on Thursday night and welcomed a new crop of passengers aboard for a”Singles Week” cruise. Among the guests to embark this episode were Kim Kardashian’s former assistant Stephanie Suganami, Glee alum Chord Overstreet — whose character hooked up with just about everyone on the ship, spreading a nasty case of syphilis in the process — and none other than Shania Twain as a glamorous grandmother… hence the aforementioned nickname.
Twain, who appeared as herself in Netflix’s A Man in Full with Jeff Daniels earlier this year, arrives on the boat alongside her granddaughter and quickly catches the eye of Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson). The two go for a spin on the dance floor during the welcome night festivities and — clearly, his dance moves did impress her much — they meet up again for a romantic sunset dinner. Bad news for anyone thinking a happy ending is in store, however, as things quickly go south when Massey keels over during dinner. A Twain-wreck, if you will.
While all signs point to the ship captain having experienced a heart attack, Dr. Max Bankman (Joshua Jackson) later reveals that Massey really is dealing with a case of stress cardiomyopathy, a.k.a. broken heart syndrome. Like Twain’s character, Massey also lost his partner and is only beginning to open back up to the idea of love again.
Sadly, the “Any Man of Mine” singer does not get the opportunity to show off her vocal chords as she did in A Man in Full, but the episode does end with her character embracing Johnson’s and slyly smiling in a way that makes us think she could be back for more.
Outside of the Twain of it all, the show continues to double down on the ludicrousness of a steamy procedural set on a cruise ship. The episode began with three women very publicly brawling in a pool over a character referred to only as “Jeffrey with ‘That D'” and ended with two migrants who were separated at sea being reunited — tonally, it was a bit all over the place.
The highlight of the episode had to be Overstreet’s character having numerous TV-PG threesomes (is there such a thing?!) and the medical crew on board the Odyssey then having to treat a roster of cruise ship guests with penicillin. You will never be able to accuse a Ryan Murphy show of not being a little bit bonkers, that’s for sure.
