Pressure is mounting in Timmins from the public to have the "money losing" Shania Twain Centre closed down. Timmins town council has heard this before during deputations by the public at council meetings. Needless to say the longer Shania is absent the more it will grow. Lately there have been public comments in local newspaper to shut down the centre and move a portion of its contents to McIntyre Arena in order to save public tax money so it can be put to other use. If anyone is intrested the local Timminsnewspaper has addressed this issue. Part of the article contains a "vent" section so anyone can express their thoughts. If you feel this move to the McIntyre Arena is a good or bad move you can vent at the following site. vent@dailypress.ca . I can see both sides of this issue personally but my vent will no doubt be to leave it as is. Council would look pretty stupid if Shania makes a monster comback. Not only that what the H would they do with this beautiful structure...Bob
I agree Tommy.. In the end I think town council would not be so stupid especially when as you know, government is all about votes. Having said that I am sure the vast majority supports the centre. My only concern is quite often it is a small group on rebels that get all the press.. Bob
Let me reassure all of you that the Shania Twain Centre is not going anywhere.
The Vent colum is an anonymous column in the local paper and it's there specifically for... venting.
There are no plans to close, relocate, move the Shania Twain Centre.
We will be welcoming fans from all over the world for years to come.
BTW, if you'd asked that question on our forums, we could have given you the confirmation right away. Visit www.shaniatwaincentre.com/forum for the latest fan convention news.
I believe ,that you believe, what you are saying. Having said that, I have seen MANY situations that due to budget restraints, things like schools, hospitals etc CLOSE DOWN.. I would suggest that being overconfident on this issue would be bordering smug... Bob
REN... Somehow I can not help but feel that there have have been some "self" intrest,if you will,to your posting. It is not hard to see that you came aboard as a "member" this date and went straight to the posting of intrest to the STC. Certainly I welcome you to the site, but having that,I will find it of intrest to see if you post and reply to the several other issues on this site with the same conviction as this one . By the way... How much salt have they cut back on the road budget... Bob
I don't normally post here. This topic was brought to my attention and I came aboard to clarify the situation.
The vent column is an anonymous vent column where people are free to express their thoughts. Your original post is worded to give the impression that there is pressure, movement or a concerted effort to move, or close the STC.
That it not at all the case.
You are right. I will probably not post to other issues on this site. I simply came here to address this specific concern. However, I do post as Ren on the STC site and you can see many of my thoughts and contributions there.
Thanks for being straight up with your reply. I too hope that the centre is left as is. I find it difficult however to believe that you have not heard of some anti centre comments by some local taxpayers in past. My concern as stated is that if Shania is gone too long that this sentiment will grow.. Bob
Shania has been out of the limelight a long duration which has a large effect on the Centre no doubt, although the main trouble is Timmins is hugely out of the way for outside people to travel. This is not some large area like Toronto or somewhere more accessible like Deerhurst, and it certainly isn't an ideal central place like Graceland. I'm sure many would like to stop in and visit, but the difficulty of its northern location poses the serious problem.
Unless you are into ATV riding, snowmobiling, boating, fishing, hunting, or any of the outdoor activities, a trip just to see Shania items and a gold mine tour might not be ideal for most fans. I would like to think maybe people would be interested in just the thought of visiting a far reaching place, a unique and different location. How many can say they've visited Timmins? There could be a certain luster or special feeling in saying I've been to Timmins, and not a commonly referred to place like say, Paris, for example.
That would be detrimental if it was to close, the STC is a true represenation of who Shania is and besides where else would she be able to stash her stuff?
