COMIC TO THE CORE

From the comedy heights of Colorado to the lows of a strip bar in Western Canada, comedian Derek Edwards has been there.

Mr. Edwards will be one of the comedians in the upcoming Just for Laughs Bermuda summer event from August 21 to 24 at the Fairmont Southampton Mid-Ocean Amphitheatre.

Other comedians at the Just for Laughs Bermuda summer event will include Bermuda's own Jonathan Young, and international comedians Jo Koy and Finesse Mitchell.

Mr. Edwards has appeared frequently in Just for Laughs comedy festival events in Canada and was the winner of the Vail Comedy Invitational in Vail, Colorado.

Mr. Edwards told The Royal Gazette in a telephone interview that he was inspired to become a comedian by watching television.

"I used to see it on the television," he said. "Geez, didn't it look like a lot of fun? People would be falling out of their chairs laughing. And then the comedian would just sit down and talk to someone.

"I thought, 'you get to wear a nice suit and everyone loves you'. It wasn't a bad way to earn a million dollars. So basically, I got into comedy through sheer ignorance."

Mr. Edwards spent his early years in comedy doing manual labour to make a living.

"You can get by," he said, "but you have to plug away at it. For the first four or five years I was a house painter and a damn good one. I could move them extension ladders around."

He said it is hard to pigeon hole what he uses as subject matter. Many of his skits attempt to answer those age old questions such as why do all the bank tellers go on lunch break during the bank's busiest times.

To the uninitiated, Mr. Edwards has an accent not unlike the characters in the movie 'Fargo'. But the accent is actually from Northern Ontario.

He blamed it on the weather.

"We all came up with a good accent to stop ourselves from going crazy," he said. "I am from Ontario, eh? I am from a little town way up in the north called Timmins."

Timmins is famed for being the birthplace of country music singer Shania Twain.

"We didn't cross paths," said Mr. Edwards. "There are 30,000 people spread out in Timmins. It is a mining town. It takes up a lot of acreage."

Mr. Edwards said Ms Twain once came back for the high school sock hop, but he was otherwise engaged.

"I did meet her once when she came back for a high school reunion," he said. "She was really nice. She didn't come with an entourage or nothin'."

He said that while trying to make it as a comedian it is natural to bomb once in a while.

"There are so many shades of bad," he said. "I had a rough go at a biker bar once. It wasn't really set up for subtle nuance. It was a strip bar in Western Canada.

"There was a time that night when a 300 pound plus guy picked up a chair and was coming to me. 'Does this end soon?' I thought.

"Eventually, the owner said 'Jesus, Gus, put that down'. Gus was eventually embarrassed off the dance floor."

Mr. Edwards was much better received at the Vail Comedy Invitational in Colorado. He was picked from 700 other comedians.

"I was the only Canadian guy," said Mr. Edwards. "They were very kind to me. I guess we Canadians are so silly they like laughing at us."

He said winning that competition opened doors for him, and he had the chance to work in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I have also worked in Cork, Ireland, on the south coast. It was a pretty town. They get ten thousand inches of rain per year.

"They are doing really good exporting poets and philosophical thought."

Mr. Edwards said he is now excited to be coming to Bermuda.

"The guy that booked the engagement in Bermuda is so mad that he has to go to Scotland to the Edinburgh Festival," said Mr. Edwards.

"I haven't met the fellows on the show. It is nice to meet veterans."

He said as soon as he is off the plane he will be inspecting the Island in search of good laugh material. "I do a lot of stuff about marriage," he said. "That tends to resonate with the crowd. That will span the borders."

He said he doesn't tend to use his strip bar experience in his comedy routines.

"Some images you don't like to dredge out again," he said.

When The Royal Gazette talkedto Mr. Edwards by phone he was getting ready for an evening Just for Laughs event in downtown Toronto.

"It will be an outdoor show for the Just for Laughs guys," said Mr. Edwards. "If I can do well down there it might be my finest hour.

"I will be competing with the ding ding of street cars, sirens, and traffic."

But he said he felt more like a success after a challenge.

"If the crowd paid a bunch of money and is hanging on your every word, then you don't feel as much as though you've achieved something," he said. "It is when you are pulling teeth that is when you feel success."

To other up-and-coming comedians his advice was to first have a good paying job on hand.

"That is really paramount in case you should fall out of comedy," he said. "Also, keep trying to do new stuff. Don't fall back on somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes that work well. It gets out of topical after a while. You forget how to do it."

This year's Just for Laughs Bermuda summer event will be 100 percent reserved seating. Tickets are $55. Show and dinner sold separately. She may have fox-trotted her way to fame on Dancing With the Stars, but dont expect much dancing from Julianne Hough when the fledgling country singer opens for Brad Paisley on Friday at the Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain, a package tour that also features singer-songwriter Jewel and Stealing Cinderella crooner Chuck Wicks.

I dont really dance; I just move around the stage, Hough (pronounced huff), who turns 20 today, says with a laugh. (Its) not anything that youll see me do on the show, because that doesnt really fit with country music.

But country fans can expect a nice sampling from Houghs self-titled debut CD, which topped the Billboard Country charts upon its May release the biggest-selling debut by a country artist since Kellie Picklers Small Town Girl in 2006.

I play five songs. Its high energy. I have 20 minutes to show em what I got, and hopefully theyll like what they got and continue supporting (me).

Considering the reception given her infectious single That Song in My Head, the country-music newbie neednt worry. Country radio, she says, has been great about playing the song, and more and more people are responding to her set.

You see more fans singing along, and you can kind of pump them up yourself and literally touch them.

Paisley, she notes, has ramps on his stage onto which you can walk out, and he lets his opening acts use them.

Hes very generous, she says.

Connecting with fans is something the Utah-born Hough has excelled at for the past three seasons on Dancing With the Stars. Her all-American-girl looks, charisma and, of course, fleet-footed dance moves have compelled viewers to reach for their phones and vote for Hough and her various amateur partners. She famously won back-to-back seasons in 2007, with Olympian Apolo Anton Ohno and then with Indy-car driver Helio Castroneves, before being eliminated shockingly early last season with partner Adam Carolla.

I had won twice, and I dont think (the producers) were going to give me somebody that they thought was pretty compatible (with me), Hough says of her pairing with former Man Show comic Carolla. But it was cool that we were complete opposites. Hes actually a really great guy.

Early ouster or not, Hough still recognizes the boost the show has given her career, as both a dancer and an aspiring singer.

The power of television these days is incredible. I would have pursued music regardless of if I were ever on Dancing With the Stars. But it definitely would have taken a lot longer. You have to strike while the irons hot, so we came out with the album probably a lot sooner than if I didnt have the TV show.

Its that fast track to fame that might have made some in Nashville wary of Houghs aspirations just another celebrity trying to sing and cash in on the country market.

I thought I was going to receive that a lot more than I have, Hough admits. At the beginning, before I even had a single out, I heard little things like that, just skepticism.

Once people either met her or heard the album, though, she says, they felt differently.

This is my career, she says. Its what Ive wanted.

Its also what she was reared on.

I grew up listening to Dolly, Reba and Martina. All those powerful women you hear about, Hough says, noting Shania Twain (Come On Over) was the first artist whose record she bought with her own money.

But even if Hough becomes the next Shania, she admits shell never entirely give up dancing. For one, shes obligated to return to the show that made her famous.

Im on contract, so if they ask me back, I kind of have to go, Hough says, stressing that theres room for both pursuits in her life. Music is my No. 1, but I love to dance. And why give that up? It keeps me in shape.

Billy Currington at the Texas Club

How would you feel if superstar Shania Twain called and invited you to sing a duet?

Rising country singer Billy Currington could hardly believe it when that amazing moment happened to him.

"It kind of came out of the blue," said Currington. "I will never forget her asking me to do the duet with her. I knew before it even happened that it would be something that would help turn my career around and set it on a great path. That was the turning point for me. Another blessing in my life I am thankful for."

Their duet, called "Party For Two," was recorded especially for Twain's Greatest Hits CD, which sold over six million copies worldwide. It went on to become a Top Ten country hit single.

As a solo artist, Currington has had hit songs of his own including "Good Directions" and "Must Be Doing Something Right," which both went to number one on the country charts.

"I think I started playing and singing in church when I was a kid, Currington said as he remembered his early beginnings. But I never thought much about being an artist. I didn't even know much about it until I was in high school. That's when I started playing guitar and singing for friends."

Long before his Nashville glory, Currington grew up in a small town with a population of less than five thousand people. It was a town in which everyone would know everything about everyone else who lived there. With that said, the folks in Curringtons hometown of Rincon, Georgia encouraged the young singers talent.

"People started saying, 'Hey, you need to move to Nashville.' So, I just started thinking that way myself. When I was seventeen, I knew I wanted to graduate, get out of high school, get up to Tennessee and check it out," Currington said.

Currington eventually auditioned for the world famous Opryland four times, but never made the cut.

"It was a great experience going through things like that because it kind of toughens the soul, Currington explained. "Looking back, I'm glad it didn't happen for me then. It really was a blessing that it didn't work out that way because so many other things started opening up."

His first single "Walk A Little Straighter" became a Top Ten country hit, but touched on abuse he suffered from an alcoholic stepfather.

"I wrote part of it when I was a kid and finished it later on, right before I finished my first album. And I never planned on that song even being on an album and for sure never planned on it being a single on the radio. It just kind of happened that way. It touched a lot of people," he said.

In addition to his musical talents, some compare Curringtons looks to movie star Matthew McConaughey, which strikes him as funny.

"I can of laugh at it. I never looked at myself as some sexy country singer or something. But the fact that it kind of happened that way, I'll take it," Currington laughed.

When asked if he would accept an acting role if Hollywood called, Currington admits it would be tempting.

"I want to keep making records as long as I have that opportunity, he said. But also I've always had an interest in acting. I look forward to doing a movie someday. I feel like that's waiting in the wings for me. I don't know where or when, but I don't think it's too far away. "

Songwriting is still a bit of a mystery for Currington, but he enjoys learning it on-the-job as a working professional.

"Songs come to me in different ways. Sometimes I'll hear people say something, and it will just be a couple of words or a line or whatever and I will go write it down and mess with it later. Sometimes, I'm just sitting with a guitar playing a melody and a melody tends to bring out lyrics. There is just so many ways. [There's] never one way to write a song."

While out on tour, Currington likes to turn up the heat a bit for his audience.

"As far as the live show, it's exciting, said Currington. It's very energetic. A great band playing great music and people tend to get crazy at our shows for some reason. I don't know how that happens, but somewhere about three quarters of the way through, there's no telling what you're going to see."

Shania saw a quality to his voice that she really liked, but I believe it was Luke Lewis who suggested Billy, maybe she will return the favour one day and duet on a track for his CD?

And the day before she was spotted buying intoxicants at the summerhill liquir store.

If I remember correctly,and I think I do,Shania in an interview with Katie Cook, stated that she kept a bottle of wine or two,in the house for friends! So, there's only one place to go to get it,why Should Shania�be embarassed to be seen in a liquor store! Come on guys give her a break!!!�I' guess shes not to goto the bathroom either!!!!

What .....Bobby out of the corner...Have to admit..Feeling a bit shaky..Anyhow I promised to stay in my corner and only post once a day�but also said I would come forward when news came forward and if I knew ,either confirm it or deny it. ..Having said that..It is 100 percent about Kit Kat restraunt..She was there this past Sat night along with 2 other people..I don't know who they were..She ordered a pasta dish .. This is beginning to irritate me. First the underwear buying, then this Kit Kat place doesn't sound like a Shania type of atmosphere, and finally, a LIQUOR store??? Shania has been known to keep a couple of bottles of wine for wine drinking company (which on holidays she will have an occasional sip) as well as buy as Christmas gifts for wine drinking people.

I really don't know if it is believable that Shania is going this route or if this is bogus. I have no clue what to make of it. I'll just keep my peace. Grr...

Yes, she does human things, lol, like put one pant leg on at a time, ect, lol, but this is getting to be "unusual" it really is as far as Shania goes. That's why it be best I stay on the sideline for now.

Hey Folks...Personally I don't think where she eats or what she drinks is really much of a story at all but I know it�is to�some on�the board..The replys are proving that..I guess I felt that members do have an intrest in where she is..City/Country etc.. My post was only to update that she is or WAS in Toronto last weekend...She�was back on the lake on Monday.
As far as members being upset about this news..That is there personal issue..The truth is she WAS there and Kit Kat is a well known booze cruise hangout..TRUST ME� AND...simply call� Kit Kat� 416-977-4461 to confirm the Shania story� ..BUT only if you are brave enough to accept the info from staff that�she was there..YES..They serve food but it is�only a�sideline to the booze action..Sorry Folks..Only telling you the facts... Guess I will get in trouble for this as well but thats OK...I am used to it..Bobby boy

Shania lost her discipline when her parents died for a month or two, then gained it back quickly as we know she has be very controlled of her life and actions over the years. I'm sure when the husband you loved cheats on you, she might lose it as well. Get drunk with the sisters and have a supportive circle talk and shed a few tears I hope is the case, nothing more.

I really should be on the sidelines now, lol.

Just because someone goes to a booz establishment doesn't mean they are an alcoholic. Some people just want to have fun and have a couple of drinks.

Nobody dumped anyone lol!!!!
They seperated long before�alleged�affair.
It was very mutual in my opinion and they decided to go their seperated ways last year.

As for me ever being dumped. Nobody would dump the total package like me.
