Hi,

Sounds like someone who didn't get Shania at first and then grew up and realized what Shania is all about...being independent as a woman of today and breaking down barriers and setting new precedents in life and music.  I think Ms. Warner needed to mature a little herself before she realized the true meaning of Shania.  But now it seems she has seen the light and knows who busted through the doors for other female artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert.  Shania made the road a whole lot easier for them then it would have been without her.  Shania is like the female Elvis of country if you want to see it that way.  Elvis had the black blues type music and the hips and "vulgar" dance moves and Shania had her feminist lyrics and her always smiling belly button and sexy dance videos.

Just my thoughts

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

Shania Twain: 20 years of bad feelings, bare midriffs and breaking ground

posted by Andrea Warner on Sep 20, 2013

blog-Shania20Years_16x9_620x350.jpg

It’s been 20 years since Shania Twain's self-titled debut was released, and over a decade since her last full-length studio release. In the space of just nine years, from 1993 to 2003, Twain hit the country music industry like a grenade, blowing it up from the inside out. She made women-centric pop crossovers a modern country staple (you’re welcome, Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift) and her third album, Come On Over, is one of the biggest and best-selling country albums of all time.

But for me at least, her legacy is a complicated one. As a teenager, I couldn’t stand Twain. I felt her brand of coy, sexy country-pop pushed women back 10 or 15 years. I wrote her off as a construct of male fantasy: a girl who could ride a horse while showing off an impossibly toned bare midriff by day and slip into some sort of cleavage-baring c0cktail dress at night, the emphasis always on her sex appeal first, relatability second, talent third.

In retrospect, I think my frustrations were warranted, but it was terribly un-feminist of me to ignore the ground she was breaking. I only saw what I felt were the shattered pieces of progress sacrificed by virtue of her success. I saw her success as reaffirming and congratulating patriarchy on making women conform to a specific set of ideals, of being rewarded for going along with the charade that one needs to be perceived as at least twice as sexy as they are talented in order to make it.

I couldn’t see Twain’s success as having value to all women, but it did and it does. I didn’t see her skillful manipulation of the surface to push her subversive, secret agenda — an agenda that would change country music, for a little while at least, and give rise to a new generation of women writing and producing their own material. On all of her albums, Twain asserted what she wanted as a woman, or at least what her female characters wanted, and not in service of the male gaze but in service of herself. Not that I can personally get behind every lyric, but from “Any Man of Mine” to “That Don’t Impress Me Much” to “She’s Not Just a Pretty Face,” Twain reiterated over and over again a woman’s power and independence. A number of her songs that didn’t chart reinforced feminist themes, such as "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!."

It’s particularly striking given the current prevalence of bro-country (Florida Georgia Line, Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan) that’s taken over the airwaves, stadiums and even the recent CCMA Awards. Taylor Swift has moved entirely into pop at this point, leaving Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert as modern country’s two main solo female artists. Earlier this summer, Twain announced via Facebook that she’s finally working on her fifth studio release. It’s a comeback I never dreamed I wanted, but now I think it can’t come soon enough.

To celebrate Twain's 20 years in the music industry, I've put together the gallery above (Link Below) of some of her biggest moments, career highlights and surprising stories about the life and times of Shania Twain.

I think little Eileen looks cute in this picture. I like the smile and the dimple on her cheek and I can see intellect and seriousness in her eyes, which are also beautiful, so transparent and green.

Shania is proof that some beautiful people were very plain looking kids! Some need time to grow into their looks! The boy hairstyle wasn't helping matters!

Can You Guess the Artist in This Yearbook Photo?

By Billy Dukes | August 22, 2013

This future country star had to bundle up to stay warm on her part of the planet. That thick sweater (or one like it) was likely a staple of her winter wardrobe. Later, she’d go on to push the boundaries of country fashion with outfits that were very revealing. Do you think you know who this singer is?

This pic was likely taken in the mid ’70s, although the style and the colors have a mid ’80s feel. It’d be another 15 years before the world would learn her name. These days, she’s returned to the spotlight, but hasn’t toured in over a decade. Click the button below to find out if your guess is right and to see more country yearbook photos.

FN Spy: Styling Cher Lloyd

By Lauren Manzino | August 12, 2013

What do Pink, Shania Twain and up-and-comer Cher Lloyd have in common? They have all worked with celebrity stylist and costume designer Jordan Stolch, who fueled her passion for fashion at a young age. “When I was younger I would wear my mother’s old dresses and jewelry around the house. As I got older I would buy fashion magazines and study them,” Stolch told Spy. “I started my Vogue collection around this time and haven’t missed an issue since.” Now, Stolch is wrapping up her recent style credits, including Pink’s “The Truth About Love” tour and Shania Twain’s “Still the One” series. This fall, she will join Cher Lloyd’s “I Wish” tour. Here, Stolch talks style among celebs and brands fit for dancing feet.

What are some of the standout looks for Lloyd’s upcoming tour?
“I am working with a lot of up-and-coming designers on this project because I love collaborating with new talent. For this tour, fans can expect to see a ‘new’ Cher. We are stepping up the style ante with more grown-up looks and fashion-forward pieces. You will see Cher taking it back to her more urban days with one-of-a-kind streetwear pieces and amazing footwear.”

What are some of Lloyd’s favorite footwear brands and styles?
“Because Cher spends so much time on stage, she loves footwear that is fashion-forward but still provides her the security to move. We have a few great-heeled combat boots that we’ve been using lately. Cher loves super-high heels, but doesn’t get the opportunity to wear them as much. These are great for photo shoots or appearances. Brands she adores are Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Jeffrey Campbell and Sam Edelman.”

You’ve done wardrobe for Pink and Shania Twain, who have dramatically different looks. How would you describe their on-stage style?
“The style direction for Pink’s tour was very street oriented and uninhibited. There was a lot of bold color and print use, paired with unexpected silhouettes. For Shania’s tour, the direction was much more classic and feminine and played to her very sophisticated nature.”

Somebody on the Cleveland Indians baseball team is a big Shania fan!

Jake Taylor, Shania Twain Among Pseudonyms Used by Cleveland Indians as Team’s Hotel List Gets Leaked (Photo)

by Anna Fogel on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 at 5:15PM

What do Denzel Washington, Shania Twain and Carmen Electra have in common? Just ask the Cleveland Indians.

While in Minnesota for a three-game series against the Twins this weekend, the Tribe’s rooming list was accidentally put into the hands of a regular guest, and before too long, all of the creative pseudonyms that the players use on the road were made public information.

Jake Taylor, catcher for the Indians in Major League makes an appearance on the hotel list, along with Jennifer Lopez, Dick Tracy and even Tar Zann leaves the jungle to travel with the team.

Not all of the Indians on the 40-man roster use fake names, but some of the most famous ones do such as Nick Swisher, Michael Bourn, Mark Reynolds, Jason Giambi, Justin Masterson and Carlos Santana – which means it’s anyone’s guess as to which star likes to go by J.Lo on the road.

Check out the full rooming list below.

Sexy Album Covers: Country Music’s Hottest CD Cover Art

By Gayle Thompson

You can’t judge an album by its cover, but you can certainly ogle it. It’s hard to find a country music CD without a photo of its featured artist looking his or her hottest. From Carrie Underwood‘s leg-tacular new ‘Blown Away’ album cover to the two pots of gold underneath Dolly Parton‘s ‘Rainbow,’ country singers have long made their album covers sizzle with sex appeal. The Boot presents our picks for the sexiest album covers in country music.

2. Shania Twain, ‘Up!’

Shania’s 2002 double-disc, ‘Up!,’ features the Canadian beauty in a sheer white tank top that leaves little to the imagination. A triple-platinum seller, the album boasts a No. 1 hit, ‘I’m Gonna Getcha Good,’ plus several Top 10 tunes, including ‘Forever and For Always’ and ‘It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing.’

***"I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" which was the album's lead single never hit No. 1, it peaked at No. 7. While "Forever And For Always" peaked at No. 4.

Shania Twain – Strange Tour Rider Requests

By Billy Dukes

A Shania Twain tour stop is an economic boom for local produce farmers. While on the road, the singer hopes for a small truckload of lemons, papayas, mangoes, bananas, melons, beets, broccoli and carrots — 10 pounds of carrots! The vegetarian points out that she often eats with her crew and has special demands. You think? On stage, she likes to know she’s safe, so a K9 sweep of the area may be requested to deter people from making fake bomb threats. Additionally, Twain has her own security dog.

Ball State alum fiddling for Shania Twain

by Keiara Carr | The Journal Gazette | May 19, 2013

bilde?Site=JG&Date=20130519&Category=ENT02&ArtNo=305199998&Ref=AR&Q=85&MaxW=400&MaxH=600
Violinist Jason Mowery, a former Fort Wayne resident, performs nightly shows in Las Vegas.

How did violinist Jason Mowery go from fiddling in small town shows in Indiana to performing nightly in Las Vegas with Shania Twain, one of the top-selling female country artists of all time?

Well, he had to pull a few strings.

Before the former Fort Wayne resident performed for thousands in 18 countries on five continents, before playing the Grand Ole Opry, and even before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, Mowery was working on graduating with a music engineering technology degree from Ball State University in 2000 with a passion for live performance and no idea of what to do next – except email anybody in the country music industry within a 20-mile radius of Nashville.

“I got really lucky,” Mowery says by phone from his home in Nashville. “I was working in the computer lab at Ball State and had some down time so I taught myself how to design a website probably a year and half before graduation. I started sending out my website like a business card.”

From one fateful email, Mowery, 36, has established himself as a touring country musician for 13 years. He is currently performing with Shania Twain during her Caesar’s Palace residency.

“I still live in Nashville, but we go out to Las Vegas about four times a year and we’re there for about three weeks,” he says. “We play shows almost every day.”

In April, Mowery was awarded Ball State’s prestigious Outstanding Alumni Award for his long list of accomplishments.

Mowery says that it wasn’t until he had to write his biography for the award program that he took the time to reflect on where his career has taken him.

“It really caught me by surprise. I didn’t think about what I do as major accomplishments,” he says. “You just lose track of everything you’ve been doing. It just made me really proud to step back and look at what I’ve done from the outside looking in.”

By some divine force – or forwarding by a co-worker – Mowery’s career began straight out of college when a mass email landed in the inbox of a manager looking for a temporary fiddler to play in the band of a new country singer, Keith Urban. Mowery says the band’s original fiddler had decided to take a New Zealand vacation.

“I was brought in to audition and to rehearse, and I instantly moved to Nashville,” Mowery says. “When that girl came back from New Zealand, I had kind of stolen her job. It turned into touring for four and a half years.”

Mowery first began playing the fiddle at the age of 9, growing up surrounded by his grandmother, great-aunts and great-uncles who played in the Decatur-based Geels Bluegrass Band. The band is a well-known fixture on Indiana’s bluegrass circuit. Mowery said he picked up fiddling from his great-uncle, Master Fiddler Francis Geels. Born in 1925, Geels performed on the same fiddle for most of his adult life. Before he died in 2011, Geels made a home recording of more than 100 songs just in case he ever forgot how to play them. The recordings now serve as an archive for bluegrass musicians.

“I sort of idolized him,” Mowery says. “I always wanted to do what he was doing.”

By the age of 11, Mowery was performing as a fiddler in the band. As a teenager at North Side High School, Mowery competed in fiddling competitions, winning several state fiddling championships and placing as a top 10 finalist in the Grand Masters National Fiddling Championship. However, as a high school senior, Mowery decided to go to Ball State to pursue architecture.

“I had drafting classes when I was at North Side, and they were college-level courses. It was really cool, and Ball State had a really great program,” he says.

Over the one year that he studied architecture, Mowery continued to play fiddle in a number of bands for extra money. He realized that he wanted to pursue music professionally; he transferred to the college’s School of Music the next year.

Mowery began to study recording technology, sound synthesis, composition, computer music and performance.

“There are all sorts of different jobs in the music business, but the one that is the most unstable is live performance, which is what I do as a touring musician,” he says. “You might be really busy for a while and then nothing. You have to be good at planning and managing your money.”

Over the years, Mowery has expanded his repertoire to include classic violin, mandolin, lap steel, banjo, guitar and Dobro, a resonator guitar. He says that working with artists in other genres, like Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee John Fogerty, gives him a chance to grow as a musician. He says that he would like to work with bluegrass-country singer Alison Krauss and rock guitarist Derek Trucks.

“I want to play with AC/DC, but I don’t think they’re going to hire a fiddle player anytime soon,” Mowery says.

Since working as a touring musician isn’t usually a long-lived career, Mowery has begun to think of other ways he can stay involved in music. He has already written songs with some of Nashville’s most prominent songwriters for Canadian Idol Jaydee Bixby and Jessica Harp, one-half of former country duo The Wreckers. Mowery married Harp in 2008. The couple has one daughter, Stella.

He says that once he gets older, he would like to stay in Nashville with his family and become a songwriter full-time.

“It’s physically hard to be a touring musician. There’s only so much sleeping on planes and buses a person can take,” Mowery says. “With already having two back surgeries, retirement might come a little quicker for me.”

Whatever the future, he knows that his place will always be behind the music.

“I love being the side guy. I never wanted to be the guy standing in the center,” Mowery says. “I’ve always loved being in the context of a band.”

Country Stars Share Their Mother’s Day Stories

By Sterling Whitaker May 12, 2013 11:16 AM

It’s Mother’s Day, and nothing is more important to country music than honoring your mother. Here, some of country’s biggest stars share their favorite stories about their mothers, the mothers of their children, or even their own motherhood.

Alan Jackson says his wife, Denise, set a positive example for their daughters when she wrote the best-selling book ‘It’s All About Him’ a few years ago. “I think it’s been great for them to see her do something out there that’s, again, not typical for a parent at all,” he shares. “But she’s a great role model for them anyway and always has been, whether she did anything professionally or not. I could see it in their eyes, you know, that they were surprised — very surprised, and also, I could see them with interest looking at her thinking it was special for her to do that.”

‘Wagon Wheel’ singer Darius Rucker says his character comes from wanting to please his mother. “I think that’s the main reason I am how I am…an innate fear of disappointing my mom,” he admits. “My mom’s not even alive, and I have a fear of her looking down from heaven and going, ‘Man I’m just disappointed in my son.’ She could have said anything in the world to me, but if she would have said, ‘Son, you just disappointed me,’ that would have killed me.”

Dierks Bentley says keeping his wife happy on Mother’s Day is a big priority. “Any touring husband, anyone who tours who has kids and a wife back home, it’s tough, man. It’s a lot of work,” he acknowledges. “So, I definitely need to step up to think of something great to do this Sunday, for sure. But nothing yet. As usual, I’ll probably get something last minute and hopefully, it’ll be great, though. She deserves something great.”

He may seem like an outlaw from his scruffy image, but Eric Church loves his mama. He has talked before about how much of his musical ability he owes to his mother — but he apparently feels he owes her an apology for his behavior when he was younger, too, though he doesn’t want to say just why. “If I’ve gotten away with it this long I’m not about  . . . I’m not letting it out now [that] I’ve made it. The guilt is even gone now, I’m good,” he says with a laugh. “So probably, but I’m not going to admit any of it. I’ll say I’m sorry, just blanket I’m sorry.”

Singer Charles Kelley from Lady Antebellum says he and his brother, pop singer Josh Kelley, also owe their mom for putting up with their youthful shenanigans. “We used to play our music loud up above on the second floor, bang on the drums and the guitar,” he recalls. “And my mom’s just one of those people, she’ll do anything for her family and she sacrificed a lot for us boys. Anytime we needed something, she made it happen. And so, we owe her a lot. She’s definitely the reason we’re playing music.”

Of course, Mother’s Day is also about being a parent. Little Big Town singer Kimberly Schlapman waited a long time for motherhood, and she says being a mom ties her to her own mother. “I see what my mother gave up and her sacrifices and her love and how she made us the most important thing in her life, and that’s what I strive to do for my little girl,” she says. “It’s the most important job I have, and it’s the most responsibility that I have, and I try to live up to a great example that I had for my mother.”

Shania Twain stresses the importance of expressing love. “It’s such a joy to be a parent,” she says. “So, I relate to all the mums out there who are getting all their love and appreciation from their kids, and I hope, when you’re a kid, a child of somebody, show your mum you love her, because it means everything.”

Throwback Thursday: Shania Twain

May 9, 2013

Shania Twain was one of the biggest singing stars of the 1990's. Her 1997 album Come On Over was the best-selling studio album of all time by a female and the best-selling country album of all time. She won five Grammy Awards and is is the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums reach diamond status. So why hasn't she put out an album since 2002? Well, she's been dealing with many of the personal issues she discussed in her book From This Moment On. The good news is that she has been performing a live show in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace called "Shania: Still the One" since December of 2012, running through June 1, 2013, so hopefully a new album will finally be forthcoming.

Has anyone heard anything about Shania attending the Tim McGraw special that was taped the day after the ACMs? Tim McGraw was on Katie Couric's talk show today and she was backstage behind the scenes of his special and she was was pointing out pictures of who was supposed to sit where and there was a seat with Shania's picture on it. I didn't realize she was going to be there.

I haven't heard anything about Shania attending but if there was a seat for her I'm sure she was there. Here is an article about the Tim McGraw special which was taped on April 8 at the MGM Grand Arena. It will air May 19 on CBS.

Preview: Tim McGraw’s ‘Superstar Summer Night’ tonight at MGM Grand

By Robin Leach | Posted April 8, 2013 • 11:28 a.m.

For the second time in 24 hours, the joint will be jumping at MGM Grand Garden Arena with another monster lineup of music giants. Our The Venetian residency headliners country king Tim McGraw and his wife, country queen Faith Hill, have recruited an all-star lineup for the taping of his “Superstar Summer Night” that airs as a 2-hour CBS special on Sunday, May 19.

It’s an eclectic musical group when you consider Tim has added pop, rock and rap stars, including a rare appearance by John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame who has sold more than 100 million records during a career that’s spanned more than 40 years.

Call him a guitarist and songwriter of blues to country, but his “Blue Moon Swamp” in 1997 won his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005, which followed his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. He’s still going strong with his ninth solo album, “A Song for Everyone,” out May 28.

There’s a collaboration that sums it up best, with Nelly and hot ACM New Artist of the Year winner Florida Georgia Line (Tyler Hubbard from Monroe, Ga., and Brian Kelley from Ormond Beach, Fla.) -- and picture Pitbull and Ne-Yo alongside Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum.

Newly crowned Entertainer of the Year Luke Bryan hardly has time to savor Sunday night’s achievements at the 2013 ACM Awards -- he served as a first-time co-host alongside Blake Shelton, also won for Vocal Event of the Year and wore really tight jeans, per Shelton -- before he’s back to singing for his supper on Tim’s tribute. Other artists include Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, The Band Perry and Dierks Bentley.

Tim, a 15-time ACM Awards winner, is using the TV special to kick off the 2013 touring season and raise funds and awareness for ACM’s charity Lifting Lives. Faith is a 15-time ACM Awards winner, as well.

The taping starts at 7:30 p.m. today for the May 19 special on CBS.

On today's CMT Hot 20 Countdown, they were talking about Toby Keith's 20th anniversary in country music and they showed a small clip of Shania and Toby from 1993. Shania was talking about what a big star Toby was and how he was the first one of them to be recognized and asked for an autograph.

Krystal Keith Interview: Toby’s Daughter Talks New Songs, Shania and Life as a Oklahoma Redneck

By Billy Dukes April 19, 2013 3:00 PM

Longtime country fans remember a teenaged Krystal Keith joining her father Toby Keith on stage at the 2004 CMA Awards. They sang their duet ‘Mockingbird’ together, and then the superstar let fans know she’d be going to college before continuing her country music education. Eight-and-a-half years later, her self-titled debut EP is available, and a full-length is coming later this year. As for that conversation between father and daughter, it wasn’t exactly a ‘Leave It to Beaver Moment.’

“Well, I thought by graduation … he meant high school,” she tells Taste of Country, laughing at the memory. “And when I graduated high school I was like ‘Nashville here I come!’ and he was like ‘No, I said college.’”

The two butted heads, and while she doesn’t say so, it was probably a noisy (or terrifyingly quiet) week in her Oklahoma home. “He was like ‘I don’t care what your plan is, this is the plan. You’re going to college and when you finish we’ll go full force into music.”

That’s what happened, and the now-28-year-old singer is happy for it. “He really did know best,” Krystal Keith says. She embraces the challenges that come with being a future Country Music Hall of Famer’s daughter. In fact, she leans on him to help her through decisions as seemingly trivial as setlists. The older Keith co-produced ‘Whiskey and Lace’ and wrote many of the songs (three from the ‘Krystal Keith’ EP).

Krytsal opened up about her family dynamic and the personal songs on ‘Whiskey and Lace’ during a conversation with Taste of Country. Toby’s daughter has a little redneck in her, and she embraces it at time — including one that tells the true story of summer afternoons down by the river. Skinny dipping may have been involved — but she’s not sayin’, she’s just sayin’.

ToC: In some ways, it seems like you’d have to work extra hard to prove yourself in country music?

Krystal Keith: Yeah. It’s fun shoes to fill.

What have been the challenges and what has been the reaction?

I haven’t really encountered any challenges, I’ve kind of just done my thing and fans have been really receptive. Every show I’ve done I’ve had a great turnout and the meet and greets are awesome … About half the people that turn out at my shows just come to see live music and I don’t think they even realize that I’m Toby’s daughter until they start walking through and hear people talk about it.

Now that the album is written and recorded, how influential is he in your career as you’re moving on to the next stage?

He’s like immensely important. I’m still learning the ropes a little bit and how to do certain things, so any time I have a question I’ll go to his house (she lives two miles away in Oklahoma) or I’ll call and be like, “Hey what do you think I should do about this?” From setlists to everything — he’s a genius.

Did you seek the advice or perspective from another female artist?

If there is an artist that I have gotten the most advice from, from a female artist, it would probably be Mica (‘Daddy Dance With Me’ co-writer Mica Roberts). Just because I see her so often and every time we’re around each other we talk about my career and we talk about the people I’ve been songwriting with and everything.

I will say, when I was younger I always used to say Shania (Twain) taught me how to sing because she was on tour with my dad and we would sit on the bus and I would sing and she would tell me “That’s a little … this pitch, this is how you do this.” We wouldn’t have a 30 minute or one hour session, but I would be just singing songs and she would just give me tips.

So when she really hit it big, I was like, “Oh yeah, Shania taught me how to sing.”

If this was an album of just one song, which song would you choose and why?

Wooo … I wish I could pick three. Maybe ‘Daddy Dance With Me’ or ‘Doin’ It.’ Just because ‘Doin’ It’ is so uptempo and so catchy and so redneck and small town that it’s kind of like perfect to fit my life. And if I decided to do ‘Daddy Dance With Me’ it would be because that song is so personal to me and personal to our family.

What other song on the album has a really personal meaning for you?

‘Get Your Redneck On,’ we just wrote it, and literally while we were writing it I was like, “In high school, me and my friends went to the river and these are the scenes that were set in my real life.” So it kind of tells the story of hanging out down by the river and floatin’ the river and … it says “skinny dippin’” — not that I ever did that, but there might have been people at our little river shindigs that were skinny dipping, I don’t know.

I’m not buying that for a second, but go ahead.

[laughs] I wrote it, so it tells a true life story from my life.

What style or sound will surprise fans, especially fans coming from your dad’s fanbase?

To be honest, I have my own sound because I’m a girl, but being related … they talk about sibling harmony, there’s a familial harmony and we definitely have a lot of the same characteristics in our voice. In the studio when I was singing one song there was a musician that right after we got done with that run-through he goes, “Damn there’s some family going on in here!” Because my vibrato is almost identical to my dad’s.

Something that’s different from the EP would be ‘Muddy Water.’ That is a bluesy rock song. It’s a lot more growly and raspy than anything on the EP.

You’re a country newcomer, but you probably know a lot more than the average newbie. Did you feel comfortable disagreeing and giving your opinions in the recording studio?

Oh yeah. I didn’t have to fight very hard … My dad and I had the same view on everything, and when Mark Wright came in he understood our view and enhanced it and brought in another perspective.

Would it have been a sin to consider another label?

Ummm … It just was never discussed. I would consider it a sin. We’ve got some family loyalty going on.

‘T’ Is for Shania Twain – Top Country Artists A to Z

By Billy Dukes | March 7, 2013 12:01 PM

Why: ‘T’ presents a classic battle between classic and contemporary country music fans. Conway Twitty could front a poster advertising country music from the ’70s, and with over 50 No. 1 records, it’s difficult to argue against his influence. Randy Travis was equally influential in the ’80s and early ’90s, but it was Shania Twain that really changed the game for all future generations. Along with a few others, she helped expand the format to include new styles and fashions. The classic country fan may dismiss this as an unwanted development, but the fact remains that Twain is the most recognizable female country artist of all time.

Honorable Mentions: Conway Twitty, Randy Travis and Tanya Tucker

The long, tortured journey of Mindy McCready

By Chelsea J. Carter, CNN | February 18, 2013

Mindy McCready burst onto the country music scene in 1996 with the double-platinum debut album "Ten Thousand Angels," earning her a legion of female fans for her music's sass and sensibility.

She earned her only No. 1 the same year with "Guys Do It All the Time," a smackdown at sexism. Her performance earned comparisons to crossover sensation Shania Twain.

She spent 16 years trying to recapture her chart-topping success -- only to have it undone by drugs, alcohol and a volatile love life. The 37-year-old singer died Sunday, apparently of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

She was one of my favorite artists back in the late 90's. I loved her music. It was her, Shania, Faith, and a few other females that were on constant rotation in my car. She was really talented, but really troubled. I feel sorry for her two young children.

I don't remember Shania supporting anti-gun laws.

Shania Twain and Terri Clark make it onto the prestigious NRA enemies list

February 13, 2013

The NRA (National Rifle Association) is sort of like PETA in my book -- they have a good cause they fight for for the most part, they just tend to get a little too wacko and out in left field for my comfort.

Despite country music and guns going together like peanut butter and jelly, Mork & Mindy, or the birds & the bees, there are a few country singers out there who the NRA really doesn't like much. In fact, they like these country stars so little that they've added them to their hate list.

Ouch.

According to Buzzfeed, the NRA's enemies list came to light last fall and includes over 200 celebrities who have "lent their name and notoriety to anti-gun causes, speaking out for anti-gun legislation and providing a voice for anti-gun organizations." Shania Twain, Sheryl Crow, and Terri Clark all made it onto this prestigious list. Check out the full list after the jump...

Can You Guess Which Country Star’s House This Is?

By Billy Dukes

Country Stars House

It doesn’t look like much, but this is where dreams began for one country superstar. This childhood home of a ’90s and early ’00s hitmaker was actually split between two families, meaning this singer and her siblings were sharing bedrooms as the parents tried to scrape by on very little income.

These days, space is not an issue for this mystery country singer. She is an international star who at times has taken up residence in Europe and New Zealand. It’s been awhile since fans heard new music from her, but she’s stayed active with a reality television show, an autobiography and a residency in Las Vegas. Do you think you know whose house this is? Click the button below to find out who once lived here and to see more country stars’ homes.

It's Shania Twain's House!

By Billy Dukes | February 8, 2013

Shania-Twains-House1.jpg

Shania Twain‘s troubled childhood is well documented, as is her early career in bars and clubs. Her family lived in this home in Timmins, Ontario beginning in 1980, and it’s there that the future superstar met her Longshot bandmates. She was something of a local star at night, serving burgers at McDonalds between the end of class at high school and the time the bars opened.

Twain — then known as Eilleen — lived on the bottom floors of this house, as the top was rented to another family. Accommodations were tight, and the singer was forced to share a bedroom with her sister. Within 10 years she’d have all the space she could ask for — including homes in Switzerland and New Zealand — before her divorce from Mutt Lange split their assets.

Hey Cariboo, How's Your Music IQ?

By Sherry Day Foster | January 27, 2013

It was bound to happen here in the deep of our Cariboo Winter. I got curious about Canadian music and musicians.

So as is my usual habit, I brought up Wikipedia and took a quick look-see, hoping my worst doubts would be dissolved. Alas, that was not to be--confirmation was right before my eyes. I know virtually nothing of the roots of Canadian music; subsequently, I was neither surprised nor delighted to discover the first Canadian musician I recognized was Guy Lombardo, born in 1930. Now to the younger generation (say, under thirty), the dude might seem to be old. But in music-years, 1930 is considered "modern".

Guy and his Royal Canadians, however, were one of the two or three artists' albums my parents purchased when we got our record player in the mid-fifties. The vinyl's were 45's, the very latest on the market! My brother and I had to insert a gadget over the slender stem that we put our 78's or our 33 1/3's on because the 45 holes were about the size of a quarter. There were five 45 rpm's in the album. Songs I remember are: "Dangerous Dan McGrew", "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" and of course, "Auld Lang Syne”, the one that rings in the New Year.

During the 1980's I enjoyed Ann Murray's songs. Then there was Shania and Celine and how can we omit Justin Beiber? But that's about all I knew of Canadian musicians until my recent move to the Cariboo. Then I got to poking around in my husband's music library, which is very extensive. It's mainly Jazz, Rock, Pop, and Classical. Being brought up in the American Piano Guild tradition and consequently teaching for around forty years I recognized all the Classical CD's and recordings.

But the Jazz, Pop, and Rock? No way.

This is going to surprise some of my Canadian readers. One album has been in my music library for a long time. It's Victor Garbar, ("Argo" star, and supporting actor in many other roles).Years ago, a very handsome and talented Garbar played the part of Jesus Christ in the Canadian version of "Godspell", a popular Broadway musical. Dressed in a Superman shirt, a la "back in the seventies" his stellar performance stole my heart. . I loved his portrayal and his singing. Now how many of you Canucks even knew Victor could sing? Not many, I'd wager.

My hubby did introduce me to Leonard Cohen's, "Famous Blue Raincoat" while we were in the courting stages. He sent me Len's CD. I loved it, and went on to either buy/or at least You Tube most of his music. I knew he'd recently received an award of sorts and thought he was the Poet Laureate of Canada; however, after investigating this, found he received the award for songwriting excellence at the First Annual Pen Awards in the USA. Chuck Berry was similarly honored on February 2012. (Incidentally, I learned the Poet Laureate of Canada is Fred Wah, nominated in 2011). I will have to say, if I had children or grandchildren in the room, I'd probably not put on a Cohen CD. It's more for the adults, wouldn't you say? I bought his latest book, "I'm Your Man" for my Kindle last fall, and it was interesting and well-written. JMO-Just My Opinion. (Everyone has one).

To keep this column from being too long, I'll list the names of the Canadian musicians who were submitted on my facebook when I asked the question, "Who is your favorite Canadian musician?" I was stunned. Stunned, at the number of responses I got. Most of these musicians are in my husband's library, so I'm spending some time listening to them.

Here they are: Neil Young, Brian Adams, Leonard Cohen, The Rankin Family, Chilliwack, Burton Cummins and Randy Bachman of The Guess Who, Geddy Lee of Rush, Michael Bubblos, Gordon Lightfoot, The Tragically Hip, Alanis Morissette, Jeff Healy, Robbie Robinson, Trooper, Steve Poltz, Jesse Cook, Victor Garber, Hank Snow, Bruce Hornsby, Steve Poltz indie artist, Cross Canadian Ragweed with Amos Moses, Daniel Magam, Stan Rogers, Clumsy Lovers, and Jeanette McDonald.

My facebook friend and music trivia buff, David Obelcz, from the Seattle area wrote an insightful observation and I'll share that now, with his permission. "Shania Twain, for better or for worse, was one of the most influential Canadian musical artists to hit the music scene. "Riding the tidal wave of a resurgent country music scene created by artists like "Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, and Mary Chapin-Carpenter, she took a clear voice, a humble back ground and supermodel looks and injected even more mainstream pop into the country music genre broadening the overall audience.

"Her deft use of music video, mass media, and ultimately crossing over into pop while clinging to her country roots, made her a household name. She paved the way for artists like Sara Evans, The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, The Wreckers, and Lee Ann Womack, to name just a few. Her influence echoes almost 15-years later with artists like Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban, all move between the country and pop charts with ease. Some will argue the blurring of the lines between pop and country music was a net negative to country and western music overall, but the impact of Shania Twain to both formats is undeniable."

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you, I do have a knowledge of Country and Western. How could I not, being from Texas? I was "snowed" to learn that Clarence Eugene "Hank" Snow (May 9, 1914 – December 20, 1999) was a native of Canada. Wikki writes, "this Canadian-American country music artist, in a career that spanned nearly 50 years, recorded 140 albums and charted more than 85 singles on the Billboard country charts from 1950 until 1980. This total includes the number one hits "I'm Moving On", "The Golden Rocket", "I Don't Hurt Anymore", "Let Me Go, Lover!", "I've Been Everywhere", and "Hello Love" as well as other top 10 hits. And I always thought Hank Snow was a Texan!

As usual, I've left out a few submissions, just to see who is paying attention. And as this column continues, I'll keep adding remarks, corrections, etc. The burning question I have for all Yall Cariboians is this--"Who are your favorite USA recording stars? I've heard from the USA. Now it's yall's turn.

Until next time, Happy New Years and Adios!

'I always wanted to be Catwoman! Michelle Pfeiffer is HAWT!' Cara Delevingne told her Twitter followers on Sunday night. Come Monday, the world has been treated to a video of everyone's favourite model dressed up as the superhero herself. But that's not all. As well as donning a minxy latex mask and black satin Dolce & Gabbana bra a la Catwoman, Cara is seen working her singing chops in the cheeky clip. And this is no dodgy music video - no, no. This is Cara's genius rendition of Shania Twain hit 'That Don't Impress Me Much' to accompany the latest edition of LOVE Magazine.

Yes, as if Kate Moss squirming half-naked in a bath wasn't enough, editor-in-chief Katie Grand has included the model of the moment within the magazine's glossy pages and persuaded her to go the extra mile too. Earlier this month, a sneak preview of the shoot was leaked on Twitter showing La Delevingne sporting a striking red pout. Now said pout has been employed to sing its little heart out - and doesn't Cara do a marvellous job! Shania, who?

'So you've got a caaaar?' Cara purrs. 'That don't impress me much!' Her long blonde ponytail is all a-swishing and she has a set of sharp nude nails perfect for clawing at the camera. And all the while she's stroking a fluffy grey cat who proceeds to clamber all over her. In between, there's hints of her trademark goofiness and the odd lip curl thrown in for good measure. God, we love this woman.

Katie sure has a way of persuading top models to do a little song and dance for her. Lest we forget Cara shimmying around in little more than her undies and a Santa hat at Christmas. Then there was Doetzen Kroes and Lily Donaldson happily casting off their clothes for a little sing-a-long. How does she do it?

Remember When Shania Twain Performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show?

By Billy Dukes | January 26, 2013

Shania Twain

It was 10 years ago today (Jan. 26) that Shania Twain entertained over 88 million football fans worldwide at the Super Bowl XXXVII halftime show.

Twain sang two songs, ‘Man I Feel Like a Woman!’ and ‘Up!’ before No Doubt performed ‘I’m Just a Girl’ and Sting played ‘Message in a Bottle.’ At the time, Twain was heavily promoting her ‘Up!’ album, which was released just two months earlier.

The country superstar wasn’t the only Nashville artist to make an appearance that day, however. Pre-controversy Dixie Chicks were brought in to sing the ‘Star-Spangled Banner.’ The football game was memorable for being a blowout — the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Oakland Raiders 48-21.

Aside from Twain’s invigorating performance, the most lasting memory of that day in 2003 was the introduction of Terry Tate: Office Linebacker, the star of a new Reebok commercial. Country hasn’t been represented during the halftime show in the decade since the 2003 show.

Guilty Pleasures: Shania Twain

By Kate Bradley

I am going to open this by defending myself. Shania Twain has made some good albums. Yes, I know that don’t impress you much. After all, every music writer’s favourite defensive tactic is to wave a hand towards the obscure early albums and say, “Oh, I prefer the old stuff,” as if ‘popularity’ were a musical degenerative disease.

It’s pretty hard to justify my love for an artist whose main contribution to pop has been to provide a soundtrack for raucous hen nights (not to mention a good few stag nights) with the karaoke classic ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’. And (yes, the criticisms pile up) it’s never a good idea to marry your producer, as it’ll inevitably introduce married politics into a zone which is already a minefield of conflicting interests. Shania did, and the result is that her most popular albums suffer from a deadening hyper-production. But as I said, Shania Twain has more in her back catalogue than commercialised pop. The Woman in Me is a great album of rocky country music, and it’s not short of fun tracks – listen to the jaunty piano of ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?’ or the funky violins of ‘If It Don’t Take Two’ for confirmation.

She’s also made several hard rock tracks, however much she wishes she could erase them from history – they’re collected together on the 2000 release For the Love of Him. Think Bon Jovi B-sides sung with surprising gusto. Still not impressed?

To be honest, you’re probably right. My love for Shania was a product of Top of the Pops 2 imposed on a ten-year-old’s complete lack of musical knowledge, so maybe it’s best to leave her where she belongs: on the cheese floor at Park End.

Can You Guess the Artist in This Yearbook Photo?

Whose Yearbook

This mystery star’s high school wardrobe doesn’t look much different from her stage outfits. She shows a little more skin than traditionalists are comfortable with, but pulls off the look with a winning smile and presidential grace. Those who remember early ’80s style will concede that this singer is ahead of her time by just a few years.

Do you recognize this country superstar? She went by a different name back then. Our guess is she’s off to prom or another springtime dance in this picture, as it’d be much too cold to wear that sort of dress in a Canadian fall or winter.  I would not call it a fascination as more of them mocking the song IMO. I think they think the lyrics are silly.....

Personally I love the song, but was always troubled by the best part of being a woman part....it seems like there would be many more important things that could be said as the best part of being a woman...

Cute Kids Singing Country Songs – Shania Twain, ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman’

Little Sheldon holds nothing back in this video from 2005. He’s “going out tonight and feeling alright” in his Winnie the Pooh T-shirt and gym shorts. It’d be impossible to find a more adorable recreation of Shania Twain‘s 1999 hit on YouTube. Even the singer herself has to admire the little boy’s passion and energy.

Twain’s music video for ‘Man! I Feel Like a Woman!’ famously stretched the definition of decency on country music video channels, and while this guy seems inspired by her dance moves, he keeps his clothes on, thankfully. Really, this is just 30 seconds of pure cuteness, although one wonders how he feels about it seven years later. We think he should be proud of his performance. That sort of spirit is hard to come by!
