The best place to see Nashville's next generation

On first listen, Brandi Carlile sounds a bit like Shania Twain. Mercifully, after a couple of spins of her latest album The Story, it's clear that the Washington-born singer-songwriter isn't peddling Twainesque country-pop, but rather a more subtle blend of blues, soul and acoustic mellowness.

Her songs pull off the rare trick of being simple enough for the mainstream without sacrificing the bleeding-heart blues at their core. Thanks to years of touring, Carlile's live shows crank up the intensity even more, with her vocals backed up by a full band.
