Taylor Swift talks about Shania

From Taylor Swift's blog:
"I thought Kellie NAILED her performance of the song we wrote together "The Best Days of Your Life". I was so proud of her. I thought Darius Rucker's performance RULED, and his vocals were incredible. I'm a huge fan. I love it when I find out that the people who make the music I love are wonderful people. I love Faith Hill and how she always makes everyone in the room feel special. I love Keith Urban, and how he told me he knows every word to "Love Story" (That made my night). I love Nicole Kidman, and her sweet, warm personality. I love how Kenny Chesney always has something hilarious or thoughtful to say. But the real moment that brought on this wave of gratitude was when Shania Twain HERSELF walked up and introduced herself to me. Shania Twain, as in.. The reason I wanted to do this in the first place. Shania Twain, as in.. the most impressive and independent and confident and successful female artist to ever hit country music. She walked up to me and said she wanted to meet me and tell me I was doing a great job. She was so beautiful, guys. She really IS that beautiful. All the while, I was completely star struck. After she walked away, I realized I didn't have my camera. Then I cried."

What a wonderful thing for Taylor to say. I know she has mentioned Shania frequently as to who were her heros in country music. I can picture her crying because she did not have her camera to capture her moment with her hero.

Shania is becoming a legend and inspiring and influencing new acts.

Classy move by Shania to seek out Taylor and nice of Taylor to say those things.

Shania does like to approach people like so. Class act superstar.

Taylor is an alien!

Now before anyone re-acts to that, it's meant in a very GOOD way.

Taylor is brite, talented and acharming young woman who will be around for awhile. She has the highest regards for the people that have come before her. She knows who and what Shania is. She is clever, beyond her years. Class all the way. Her parents I'm sure are very proud.

Keep in mind something here, Shania, despite her personal problems of late has not had her head in the ground for the past 6 years. She has seen all the other up and coming stars and she knows what the competition is.

We are going to see a new Shania when she gets back. I for one can't wait!!

Taylor Swift: 'Shania Twain Has Influenced my Career'
March 4, 2009

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift says Shania Twain has had a "strong influence" on her career.

The 19-year-old star - who recently embarked on her 2009 Fearless Tour - has revealed that she models herself on country singer-songwriter Shania.

She tells Orange, "She's such a strong influence on me and my career.

"She's so independent and confident - she wrote her own stuff and took her music worldwide."

"I've been writing songs since I was 12," Swift added. "As soon as I picked up a guitar and learned three chords I wrote my first song. I would play guitar for four hours straight every night until my fingers were bleeding.

"I couldn't put it down. As soon as I discovered songwriting it's all I wanted to do."

I've said things about Taylor before. She is above and beyond her years. She is a class act.

Read the article in Rolling Stone this month about her. Although that magazine is not worth the paper it's printed on, this is a good article showing who she is.

Taylor appeared on UK television the other week, on "Loose Women", a popular daytime talk show. Here are some video caps. She seems very down to earth and pleasant.

It's nice that Shania is seen as a role model to young country acts like Swift and they have a passion for writing their own material and being original.

Here's a link to Taylor's role on CSI, from Nashville Narc

Who's your biggest musical influence? Morgan Phelps LEICESTER, ENGLAND

Shania Twain. She came out, and she was just so strong and so independent and wrote all her own songs. That meant so much to me, even as a 10-year-old. Just knowing that the stories she was telling in those songs--those were her stories.

Great interview with Taylor on tonight's Paul O' Grady Show, promoting her new single Teardrops On My Guitar. She mentioned Shania Twain's name on air, when she was asked what country music stars she admires.

She brought some gifts with her for Paul, she gave him some dog biscuits and a new (black) collar for Buster with the words' Hug Me I'm famous' on it. They showed a clip of a young Taylor singing the Star Spangled Banner. Here are some video caps.

Taylor Swift Confesses She Names and Shames

By Laura Johnston
May 11, 2009

Country star Taylor Swift will name and shame bad boys in her songs. The 19-year-old said she wrote her new song, Teardrops on Your Guitar, when she was 15. She said: "I wrote this song about a guy I had a crush on and he didn't know – inevitably he knows now. I have this habit of writing these songs about guys and naming them. I can't seem to stop doing that."

She added, "You know guys aren't ever going to want to date me at all. But you know, if guys don't want me to write bad songs about them, then they shouldn't do bad things."

The Love Story singer, who says Shania Twain and Dolly Parton are her greatest inspirations, said she decided she wanted to be a country star when she was just 10-years-old and she begged her parents to move to Nashville. She said: "I was like, 'I need to be in Nashville, that is a magical dream world where dreams come true, I need to be there'. And so that is when I started on my daily begging rant."

The teenager once said she would get a tattoo if her first album sold three million copies, but her dad put a stop to that idea. She said: "My dad was talking to me and he was like, 'So, you're going to get a tattoo'? and I said 'I'm thinking about it', and he goes 'Alright, you get a tattoo, and I'll take it off for you with a belt sander'," she told The Paul O'Grady Show.

Taylor Swift opened Tuesday's Country Music Television awards with a skit about living out her dreams. The 19-year-old country and pop sensation went a long way toward doing just that by winning video of the year and female video of the year for "Love Story" and by performing with one of her favorite rock bands.

"I want to thank Shania Twain for always making such theatrical videos, and Garth Brooks for always putting the fans first. I take my cues from you," Swift said in accepting video of the year honors. "I thank the fans for giving me video of the year when my whole family is here watching."

Taylor Swift wins CMT video of the year

It is an elaborate production that features period costumes as it echoes the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Swift won the fan-voted award Tuesday over Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Carrie Underwood and Sugarland.

Swift hugged Paisley as she walked up to accept the honor. She thanked Shania Twain for making theatrical videos and Garth Brooks for "always putting the fans first."

The 19-year-old singer also thanked her younger brother, Austin, for being her date.

Swift had a big night, also winning female video of the year for "Love Story" and performing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" with the rock band Def Leppard.

Taylor mentions Shania on CMT Awards Show

When Taylor accepted her award for video of the year last night, she thanked Shania for breaking ground with her videos. Those were not her words, but that was the jist of it.

I was a big defender of Taylor and ignored the she cannot sing rumors.....but she cannot sing! Her vocals during the CMT awards when she performed "PSSOM" with Def Leppard were SCARY bad! My local radio station isolated her vocals and if that is how her voice is, then WOW. Bad.

Swift on Shania: 'She's absolutely my favourite because she's so memorable'

TORONTO — There's a lot that Taylor Swift appreciates about Shania Twain, the woman she cites as her main influence - her albums, her live show and all that she's done for country music.

But it was Twain's graceful departure from the spotlight that may have had the most indelible impact on Swift.

"I loved watching her when she was touring, and when she put out 'Come on Over,' but when I really gained respect was seeing her go away and seeing how she never left people's minds," Swift said in a conference call on Thursday.

"Shania's absolutely my favourite because she's so memorable. I'm always just gonna be so, so in love with what she's done for country music. You know, as far as any other artist, when you leave a genre and leave the music industry for that long, people would forget you - but not Shania. No one ever forgot her."

Though the Timmins, Ont., native who hasn't put out an album since 2002's "Up!," Twain still casts an inimitable shadow over country music, says Swift.

"Every single award show it was, 'Where's Shania? When's she gonna come back? When's she gonna put out something new?"' said Swift, who speaks with a warm, down-home demeanour. "The fact that she's so memorable means she's done such an incredible job at really implementing herself in country music to where she's never, ever gonna be gone. And I love that."

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Swift has done an admirable job of similarly entrenching herself as a marquee young star in country music.

The Pennsylvania native was the first artist to have two different albums in the Top 10 year-end album chart in Nielsen SoundScan history - her 2006 self-titled debut and last year's "Fearless" - and won awards for video of the year and female video of the year at the CMT Awards earlier this month.

In fact, Forbes Magazine ranked Swift - she of the long blond locks and the bright, girl-next-door grin - as the 69th most powerful celebrity in 2009.

She's also in the midst of her first headlining tour, which will visit Calgary, Edmonton, Craven, Sask., and Winnipeg next month.

Her performance for the "Fearless" tour consists of three acts - the first, she says, aims to warm up the crowd, the second is acoustic and the third is "when it really gets crazy" - and eight costume changes.

Swift says she was working with a fairy-tale motif when working on the concept for the tour, and hopes the live performance and dramatizations contained therein give audiences a bit of insight into her songs.

"I wanted to make it more theatrical than anything I'd seen in the country shows that I'd opened up for," she said. "Theatre is an element to music that I love. I grew up doing children's theatre and just have always had this deep love for the whole element of seeing something play out before your eyes as well as hearing it through music."

"So what I thought would be cool was to have a big element of the tour revolve around the theatrics of my songs, because really they're all just dramatizations of what I've gone through. So I wanted to take that opportunity to show the audience what I'm seeing in my head when I'm playing these songs."

For example?

"There's one song that is just really emotional and personal and it comes from just this place of anger and hurt, and so in the song, I freak out and throw this chair off a giant balcony of the stage," she said. "Things like that just showcase what I was feeling when I wrote the song."

Taylor Treasures Shania In and Out of Spotlight

taylor-swift-shania-twain-200lvg062609.jpg

Taylor Swift has prized Shania Twain as her favorite female artist and biggest influence on her career. With her energetic live shows and groundbreaking music, Shania has paved the way for crossover acts like Taylor to stand firm in country music. But what you may find surprising is that it was Shania's departure from the spotlight that has had the most impact on Swift.

"I loved watching her when she was touring and when she put out 'Come on Over,'" Taylor tells The Canadian Press, "but when I really gained respect was seeing her go away and seeing how she never left people's minds."

Shania's departure from country music in 1999 was arguably abrupt, but Taylor takes note that her heroine's footprint on country music was so great that she made it nearly impossible for people to forget her. "Every single award show it was, 'Where is Shania? When is she gonna come back? When is she gonna put out something new?' ... The fact that she's so memorable means she's done such an incredible job at really implementing herself in country music to where she's never, ever gonna be gone. And I love that."

Shania's big comeback could be right around the corner. She recently wrote an open letter to fans, apologizing for her delay in releasing new music and promising that her new album will be worth the wait.

Taylor Swift Studies Shania Twain

feature

June 26, 2009 — Taylor Swift was all of five years old when Shania Twain released her ground-breaking album The Woman In Me in 1995, thus through almost all the formative years of her life, Taylor has never known a world without Shania in it.

Not surprisingly, Canada’s sweetheart is a big influence on Taylor, who’s taken particular notice of Shania’s continued impact seven years after the release of her last album of all-new material.

"Every single award show it was, 'Where's Shania? When's she gonna come back? When's she gonna put out something new?"' Taylor told the Canadian Press. "The fact that she's so memorable means she's done such an incredible job at really implementing herself in country music to where she's never, ever gonna be gone. And I love that."

Shania did that by writing songs that were catchy, memorable and distinctly different from the material of her fellow country artists, which Taylor has also done. In addition, Shania’s tours backed her songs with a significant amount of choreography and production. Taylor, not surprisingly, has incorporated a huge amount of those elements into her first headlining tour.

"I wanted to make it more theatrical than anything I'd seen in the country shows that I'd opened up for," Taylor said. "What I thought would be cool was to have a big element of the tour revolve around the theatrics of my songs, because really they're all just dramatizations of what I've gone through. So I wanted to take that opportunity to show the audience what I'm seeing in my head when I'm playing these songs."

Taylor’s taking a breather from headlining this weekend. She opens for Keith Urban on two shows in the Midwest. She returns to the Fearless Tour July 8 with a performance in Calgary, Alberta.

Even multi-platinum-selling, award-winning superstars have their star-struck moments.

Country music singer-songwriter Taylor Swift remembers hers vividly.

"I met Shania Twain. I was really scared because she's superstar status and I never wanted to be the kind to just walk up on her and invade her space or be annoying. But I was at the CMA Awards and walking down the hall after the show I heard someone call my name. I turned around and it was Shania Twain and I nearly fainted. She came up to me and told me she was proud of me and to keep on doing what I'm doing," Swift said in a recent phone interview.

Taylor Swift In TIME Magazine

TIME Magazine interviewed Taylor Swift for their upcoming issue. They talk with her about her influences, her songwriting, and her interest in collaborating with other artists.

Taylor discusses who her biggest musical influence is, saying, “Shania Twain. She came out, and she was just so strong and so independent and wrote all her own songs. That meant so much to me, even as a 10-year-old. Just knowing that the stories she was telling in those songs–those were her stories.”

Taylor also lets fans in on some surprising information about her songwriting process: “Most of the time, songs that I write end up being finished in 30 minutes or less. ‘Love Story’ I wrote on my bedroom floor in about 20 minutes. When I get on a roll with something, it’s really hard for me to put it down unfinished. I have ways of channeling the heartbreak. Also, it’s been a really awesome year. I get so excited when a song I wrote that’s very personal to me goes No. 1 and I look down and see people singing the words back to me. That makes me so much happier than anything could ever bring me down.”

She also dishes on the event that led her to write her famous song Love Story: “‘Love Story’ is actually about a guy that I almost dated. But when I introduced him to my family and my friends, they all said they didn’t like him. All of them! For the first time, I could relate to that Romeo-and-Juliet situation where the only people who wanted them to be together were them. That’s the most romantic song I’ve written, and it’s not even about a person I really dated.”

And, exciting news, Taylor would love to collaborate with… “I would like to do a duet with Taylor Hanson, because I have loved Hanson since I was 8. And Taylor Hanson has an amazing voice. And also we’re both named Taylor.” Sounds good to us! We LOVE Hanson – MMBop!
