Museum Moving to Shania Twain Centre!

STC-1.jpg

Timmins city council's formal decision this week to move the Timmins Museum and National Exhibition Centre over to the Shania Twain Centre (STC) and the Gold Mine Tour (GMT) is likely going to see a marked increase in traffic to those facilities.

Add that to the fact there is no obvious funding available for heritage or cultural projects from higher levels of government at this time and it now seems likely that the Timmins Museum will be operating out of the STC-GMT site for many months, perhaps many years.

For some time now, local critics of the Shania centre have argued that it should be made into a museum. They may get their wish. The Timmins museum staff will begin moving into its new location in January. There is no indication when a new heritage centre to replace the museum will be built.

The museum was shut down two years ago this month, when flooding occurred, resulting in mould and structural problems at the old building on Legion Drive. Since then, the museum has been operating on an ad-hoc basis out of the Porcupine Mall and space at the Whitney Arena.

Museum director Karen Bachmann and the city's development director Mark Jensen both agree those locations are no longer suitable for museum programs.

It was Jensen who recommended to council on Dec. 1, that the Shania centre and the gold mine tour buildings be used for the museum until such time as funding is found for the new $12-million arts and heritage centre, as designed by consultants Diamond and Schmitt, who were hired by the city earlier this year.

Council has already been told by heritage centre advisory committee chair Mike Doody that the shovel will not go in the ground until the new centre is paid for. Doody told council at the beginning of the month that fundraising would be a major undertaking, mainly because there is no obvious government funding available at the moment.

The committee is well aware of the economic mood that we're in, not only in the municipality but in this province and in the country. So there is still a great deal of work, Doody told council.

As council was preparing to vote on the issue this week, city councilor Denis Saudino expressed concern about whether the gold mine tour buildings would be appropriate for museum programs and for museum style art and artifact displays. Saudino, who would eventually vote in favour of the decision, was told by Jensen that work is ongoing to explore ways of how the three facilities could work together - - such as having the museum gift shop combined with the retail space at the Shania Centre.

There are also plans to incorporate open spaces at the STC to hold art exhibitions.

I guess the report highlights our initial plan which is to utilize the vast majority of the Gold Mine tour facility initially for programming and exhibit space as well as offices for our museum staff, said Jensen.
Jensen also mentioned that the museum could work with the gold mine tour to enhance the mining heritage tourism opportunities.

We are certainly going to explore further synergies. We have talked about using the main foyer area of the Shania Twain Centre to host some exhibits as to promote increased use of that facility as well, he said.

Another benefit is that the modern STC is fully accessible for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Council's decision on the matter was a unanimous vote.

Opinion

Shania Twain Centre good site for museum

Coun. Denis Saudino had a smart idea in the Dec. 29 edition ofThe Daily Press.

Put the new Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre in the Shania Twain Centre.

I'm afraid Shania's time has come and gone.

The centre is a money loser and for the few tourists it draws, it is not worth while.

That way the building could be donated for the permanent home of the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre.

It would save the taxpayers millions of dollars, rather than building a brand new facility.

All that would be needed is the proper signage so that people visiting would know where it is.

Thanks Denis, I give credit for a good idea when it is due.

Gerald Keyes,

Timmins

STC is certainly not Graceland.

Not sounding too good for the Timmins hometown hero, with the mixed feelings. Disappointing this is.

Ive read some things about STC and it sounds like it costs the taxpayers money to keep the place running, thats a shame.

The STC and the Gold Mine Tour all fall under the same umbrella as they are located at the same place. Costs to run the GMT are far superior than those of the STC.

The STC does not cost thousands of dollars to taxpayers as is often negatively reported. However, it does not make a huge profit either.

However, the STC and the Gold Mine Tour constantly bring visitors to Timmins who spend money in the City with a heart of gold. They buy gas, they spend money in restaurants and shops, they stay in hotels... essentially, they help drive the local economy.

The STC has since it's inception, hosted many different events. The number of people attending events do not factor into our attendance numbers. For instance, at Halloween, about 900 people visited the STC. Many of these events are not money-makers... they are community events held for people of Timmins to have something to do at an affordable, often free price of admission.

Some of the events held in the past... music concerts, school choirs, bands, Country Christmas party, Halloween, New Year`s eve party and all ages events, Fan Convention, Canada Day. Plans are under way to host activities for children during spring break this year.

The STC is run by a skeleton staff in the winter (1 full-time and 3 part-time)... so for them to be able to successfully organize all of these events is a testament to their commitment.

So why this post???

Often, negative publicity trumps the positive stuff.

Recently, propery assesments were released in Timmins indicating boosts in property values. This is a positive thing, BUT, that means that homeowner taxes will go up. When taxes go up, people complain to City Hall. Because the STC is City run, it becomes an easy target. They also complain about snow-removal, garbage disposal, parks, arenas and other things as well. However, the media picks up on the STC complaints. I pay taxes too... my taxes are going up also, however, I know that the STC puts on many successful events year-round. But unfortunately, a vocal minority of negativity often gets portrayed in the media, as opposed to the silent majority who are satisfied with the way things are going. I think it`s important to think about all the positive things that are being done, and also to be vocal in our support of all things STC.

6. Move the Timmins Museum permanently into the Shania Twain Centre (STC). It's a good fit. It's been a while since Shania has released a new recording, after all, which more-or-less makes the old ones museum pieces. And if she does release a new CD someday, well, we could put balloons on the roof or something. In the meantime, we could use the existing STC as a showcase not just for Shania but for everything and everyone else that has come out of Timmins, too. There's a lot to celebrate here. Shania's just a part of it and the taxpayers should be promoting everything Timmins, not just parts of it. We could even rename the place Showcase Timmins Centre, which means we wouldn't have to buy any big new capital letters, which would be an even grander savings to the taxpayers. Or should we just give the STC building to the museum and move all of Shania's stuff into the old Burger King? It's right on the main drag and it has a drive-thru that people who are in a hurry but just have to have something Shania could use. Right now, those people aren't buying anything except maps.
