Cereal saves woman stranded in NZ bushland

By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie

An Adelaide woman has been rescued after spending nine days in rugged New Zealand bushland, surviving only on cereal and muesli bars.

The woman, who is aged in her 20s, went hiking alone near the South Island town of Wanaka.

She had very little food and equipment and was trying to cross a track on land owned by Canadian singer Shania Twain.

Phillip Melchior from New Zealand's volunteer search and rescue organisation LandSAR says the woman reached a hut and stayed there for nine days because she was too scared to walk back.

"This is another example of someone getting into potentially a great deal of difficulty by not following the basic rules," he said.

Mr Melchior says another bushwalker raised the alarm and she was picked up by helicopter.

"I imagine she'd be quite keen to have a feed on something other than Weetbix and muesli bars," he said.

The woman is believed to be recovering in Wanaka.
