RE: Shania to guest judge on American Idol! - Jan. 19th - Commercial p. 5

'American Idol' Sends Home Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor, John Park

"American Idol" viewers sent four more contestants packing on Thursday night (Mar. 4), as Haeley Vaughn, Jermaine Sellers, Michelle Delamor and John Park were eliminated from the competition.

After the entire "Idol" top 20 performed the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," the first contestant to receive the bad news from host Ryan Seacrest was John Park, a Northwestern University student who'd been criticized for sleepy song choices like John Mayer's "Gravity." Park seemed to take the news in stride, reminiscing about his audition chemistry with guest judge Shania Twain and saying, "I've really enjoyed my time here."

'American Idol' Recap: Tim Urban Mounts a Comeback

27-year-old Jermaine Sellers was the next to be sent home, after both he and Andrew Garcia were brought to the middle of the stage for a moment of suspense. Upon hearing the news, Sellers said, "Where I sing from -- you can't be taught how to riff and run and sing high notes. I'm a church singer. That's where I come from."

The first female contestant voted off was Michelle Delamor, who had performed Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" last night and received mostly positive feedback from the judges. "Idol" judge Kara DioGuardi predicted that Delamor would be in trouble right before her elimination, saying, "as moved as I was in the room, when I went back to watch it, it was technically off." "I think I was so wrapped up in trying to do everything right while being judged that I kind of lost sight of just performing," said Delamor.

'American Idol' Recap: Lilly Scott Changes the Game

The final contestant eliminated was Haeley Vaughn, who was celebrated for her quirky style but criticized for her lack of training, as displayed in her shaky performances of the Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and Miley Cyrus' "The Climb." "I think I could definitely use some more experience," said Vaughn.

Following Kris Allen and Allison Iraheta's "Idol" return last week, last season's third place-finisher Danny Gokey came back to perform "My Best Days Are Ahead of Me," the lead single from his upcoming debut album. An animated Gokey joked with Ellen DeGeneres and talked about his switch from adult contemporary to country music, explaining, "I love telling stories…I love connecting with the fans, and a lot of country artists do that."

"American Idol" continues with the top 16 contestants next Tuesday (Mar. 9). The top 12 will be revealed on Mar. 11.

'Idol' exit Q&A: John Park talks Shania and what went wrong

by Kate Ward

Shania Twain loved John Park’s bottom end. Unfortunately, not enough American Idol dialers did. Last night, we watched the 21-year-old contestant get booted from the Idol stage — and unleash his best performances to date. The morning after his elimination, Park talks about performing better Wednesday night, his absence during Hollywood week, and, of course, Shania.

You’ve had a night to think about your ouster — how do you feel this morning? I’m feeling good, actually. You know, a little disappointed, but relieved. I’m just kind of ready to go back home and see what’s in store, probably go back to school and finish my degree.

What’s your degree in? I’m in the liberal arts school right now, but I actually don’t have a major yet. I was studying economics, but I’m most likely going to drop that and do something else.

What do you think happened last night? You were one of the favorites going into the semifinals. I don’t know. I think I was really distracted by the fact that it was a live show. And the cameras being there, and worrying too much about what the judges were going to say. It’s funny, because last night, I sang “Gravity” for the last time when elimination came around. And that’s when I really released everything. I let go of everything. All the nerves and the tension. I said, “I’m just going to sing. And this is the last time I’m going to sing on American Idol on national television.” So I pretty much just gave it my all. And afterwards, the judges came up to me and they were like, “That was way better than Tuesday night’s performance.”

It was a lot better. So was it all nerves? A lot of it were nerves. Not necessarily nerves, but just distractions. And thinking way too much about what people are going to think. My voice coach told me something that kind of hit me. He said, “Don’t sing to people. Sing to God. And if you’re singing to God, then you can truly just pour out what’s in your heart, and not have to worry about what other people are going to think.” I think that’s one thing that I lost sight of — coming from the heart instead of thinking about all of these things, these distractions in my head.

Do you think it had anything to do with your song choice? You did choose two slow songs in the two weeks of semifinals. I was hoping to do an upbeat song if I made it through to next week. But “God Bless This Child” I really wanted to do. I didn’t really care what the judges were going to say about the song choice. I just really wanted to promote that song for myself and my parents. And “Gravity” — maybe I could have chosen a more upbeat song, but I didn’t. It’s just one of my favorite songs to sing. So I went with it.

Do you know what you were going to sing next week? No. Not really. I hadn’t made up my mind.

Simon was particularly harsh on you Tuesday. He doesn’t have any filters. He just kind of speaks his mind. And if he felt that way, that’s fine. I could kind of see — most of the times I see where Simon’s coming from. Maybe he could do it in a more tasteful way. But that’s just how he is.

We saw you during the auditions. And then you disappeared during Hollywood week. Were you bummed about your lack of screen time? Yeah. A little bit. I was a little disappointed. A lot of my friends were like, “Where the hell are you? Are you even competing in this competition?” They focused a lot on the drama-filled moments. I was actually in some drama during the later parts. But they didn’t show that.

What kind of drama? Well, I just had a hard time towards the end of the process. I had pretty terrible auditions. But they could only showcase a few people, because of the limited time. But there were a few people, like Paige, who weren’t shown at all before top 24.

Ryan and the judges name-dropped your a cappella group, Purple Haze, quite a bit during the telecasts. My friends would joke around and be like, “Promote Purple Haze when you’re on national television!” So I tried to drop the name as much as I could.

But Ryan and the judges dropped it more than you did! I know! So it’s great!

You reached out to Shania Twain during one of your interview packages. Have you heard from her? No, I wish. But I don’t expect to. I was joking around. On TV, I said, “You think I’m joking. I’m not.” But I was joking. I mean, Shania’s beautiful. And I love her. But I’m not delusional, so….

But it still must have been surreal during the auditions. She was so into you! I couldn’t believe it. I really couldn’t. I was just clueless. I was like, “What is going on in here?!” I couldn’t process it all.

What’s next for you? I think American Idol, this whole experience made me realize that music is my passion. Even if it’s not necessarily performing. I really want to get into songwriting, or production, or even management — it’s something I’m really, really interested in. I’m going to go home and see what doors open for me. I’ve been getting a lot of press from Chicago and even in the Korean community as well. So I’ll go back and see what’s going on. Most likely go back to school and finish my degree and decompress. And evaluate where I want to be at this point. A lot of things are up in the air right now. But I’m definitely going to pursue music after school.

'Idol' finalist John Park: 'Simon's not that mean of a guy'

Shania Twain
may have been a fan, but when it came down to the votes, America agreed with American Idol's judges and sent John Park back to his college a cappella group. USA TODAY caught up with Park, 21, in a conference call the day after his elimination.

Q: Who were your favorite Idols from past seasons?

A: My favorite Idol winner was Kelly Clarkson, and I just vividly remember her finale show when she was singing A Moment Like This and she was crying onstage. It was just an incredible moment for me when I was a kid.

Q: What was your most memorable experience on the show?

A: Just meeting the other contestants and really becoming good friends and also working with Rickey Minor and the band. Just working with the crew and band and coaches, it was incredible. Just meeting new people and meeting incredible people.

Q: Which other contestants did you click with? Who do you want to keep in touch with?

A: Tyler Grady, who was eliminated last week, is someone I continue to keep in touch with. Also Casey James. And Lee DeWyze, who is also from Chicago, we'll be keeping in touch.

Q: Simon said your a cappella group was going to get its lead singer back. Was that unnecessarily mean?

A: He was basically saying that I might go home this week. He of course dramatizes so that people at home can get a kick out of it. I don't really mind it because I understand where he's coming from. That's just how he is on TV. And after the elimination, he came up to me and shook my hand and said, "Good job for coming this far." He's not that mean of a guy.

Q: There was talk of you being one of the early favorites. What do you think happened when you reached the top 24?

A: I think it was mostly song choice and nerves. I got distracted by the cameras and the fact that the judges were going to criticize me in front of 30 million people on live TV. That took away from my concentration on just singing the song honestly and interpreting the song my own way.

Q: What were you planning on performing next week?

A: I hadn't really figured it out, but I was thinking either a Stevie Wonder song or Marc Broussard or maybe Britney Spears. I had a long list of songs I wanted to choose from, but I didn't get as far as choosing a song.

Q: Where will you go from here?

A: I'm going to head back to Chicago and see what open doors are there for me, and just wait it out and probably go back to school this upcoming quarter. So I'll take some time off to decompress and think about if performing is something I want to pursue. Everything is up in the air, but basically I want to finish school and pursue music, performance or not performance, just the music industry.

Q: Will you go back to your a cappella group Purple Haze?

A: Yes, definitely.

Q: What was the meanest thing and the nicest thing you heard from the judges?

A: The meanest thing was when Simon said I was going to go home and it came true. But all the judges said nice things like that I had a great voice. Them validating that I had a great voice was really nice. And after I got eliminated, how they told me I sounded great and should be doing this for the rest of my life and that I do have talent.

Q: Were there any times during the competition that you felt you would still be happy even if you were sent home?

A: I thought that many times, really. I'm usually pretty laid back and I usually have a positive outlook. Even during Hollywood Week, after the group audition, I thought I was going to go home because our audition was a train wreck. I told myself that even if I went home, I was going to go back a much stronger person and a better performer, just more confident in general.

Q: You and Andrew (Garcia) seemed to get caught in the trap of everyone liking you early on and once you got to the Kodak Theatre, the judges were saying you hadn't lived up to expectations. How did you feel about that?

A: I didn't necessarily think my first audition was the best. I thought when I sang God Bless the Child during Hollywood Week, that was my best before top 24. They didn't show it on TV. I don't know if they had such high expectations for me because, even getting into the top 24, I felt I was one of the people who barely made it through.

Q: What kind of album would you like to create?

A: More pop/neo-soul, a John Mayer, John Legend, Gavin DeGraw kind of feel.

Q: If you could work with anyone in the industry, who would that be?

A: Stevie Wonder is one of my biggest idols ever. If I got a chance to work with him, even for a minute, that would be a dream come true.

Q: Closing remarks?

A: All I have is gratitude. Thinking about before all this happened, where I was as a performer and a person, I came out so much more confident. I've never believed in myself this much. It's still seems surreal that I went through all of this. But this experience made me realize I do want to pursue music instead of going back to school and studying economics. So, when I go back to school, I'll most likely study something that's more relevant to the music industry. Even if it's not performing, I'd like to have a career in the industry, whether it's management or songwriting.

Factbox: Who Will Replace Simon Cowell On "American Idol"?

Simon Cowell on Wednesday will end his nine year run as the judge Americans love to hate on "American Idol", with no word on who will fill his shoes.

Cowell has said his successor on the TV singing contest should give honest critiques and have solid music industry experience.

Following are some of the names mentioned in the U.S. media as possible candidates for Cowell's "Idol" job. Fox television executives have not said when they will make an announcement.

HOWARD STERN - Controversial U.S. radio "shock jock", Stern, 56, has campaigned hard for the job through his Sirius XM satellite radio show. But Stern has no music background other than being a radio personality, and a history of fines for broadcast indecency might make him an unlikely fit for "American Idol"s family audience.

ANTONIO "L.A" REID - CEO of Island Def Jam Music Group and Grammy-winning producer who signed Avril Lavigne and Justin Bieber, Reid's name has gained ground in the last two weeks but does he want to be a TV star?.

SHANIA TWAIN - Canadian country pop singer and five-time Grammy winner, Twain, 44, was one of the most popular "Idol" guest judges and mentors this year. But Twain has signed a deal for her own 2011 TV show on OWN:The Oprah Winfrey Network.

STEVE LILLYWHITE - Grammy-award winning British music producer, who has worked with U2, the Dave Matthews Band and Phish. Produced a series of YouTube videos in March touting his credentials, saying "I would give it my all. It would be my absolute focus."

SEAN  "DIDDY" COMBS - Grammy-award winning rapper, record producer and fashion designer, Combs, 40, has cutting edge experience and a huge fan base. He told MTV last week he wanted the job after finding out how much Cowell gets paid -- but only if his pay is the same.

PEREZ HILTON - Hollywood celebrity blogger with a sharp tongue who has campaigned hard, offering to work for free. Recently worked with "American Idol" creator Simon Fuller to promote singer Travis Garland but has scant music credentials.

SIR ELTON JOHN - Outspoken British singer-songwriter, 63, whose name was among the first on the "Idol" rumor mill. However John is reported to have turned down a multi-million dollar offer earlier this month to replace Cowell.

TOMMY MOTTOLA - Former Sony Music boss, ex-husband of Mariah Carey, who counts Jennifer Lopez as his protege and who relaunched the career of Usher. But is there a tug of war with Cowell, who has said Mottola, 60, would be a good choice for his "X-Factor" show next year?.

HARRY CONNICK JR. - Top-selling singer, actor and composer, he was rated by "Idol" contestants as their favorite mentor this season. Fans launched a campaign in May backing Connick, 42, but he may have his hands full with his own career.

PIERS MORGAN - Former tabloid newspaper editor and abrasive British judge on "America's Got Talent" TV show (which was created by Cowell) and "Britain's Got Talent". Morgan appeared an obvious choice but laughed off speculation in January, saying "it will never happen."

DeWyze triumphs over Bowersox on `American Idol'

LOS ANGELES — Lee DeWyze, a paint store clerk who overcame his shyness to impress "American Idol" judges and viewers with his spirit and soulful voice, triumphed Wednesday over bluesy musician Crystal Bowersox in the contest's ninth season.

When asked by host Ryan Seacrest how he felt, an emotional DeWyze said, "I don't know. It's amazing, thank you, guys, so much ... I love you. Crystal, I love you."

The finalists had closely matched fan bases, with just a 2 percent voting gap between them coming into the finale, Seacrest said. DeWyze's victory was based on votes cast after Tuesday's performance show, which drew more judges' compliments for Bowersox, 24, of Toledo, Ohio, than for DeWyze, also 24, of Mount Prospect, Ill.

The total number of votes cast in the finale weren't announced by Seacrest. That's a departure from most years past: Last season, for example, the high-profile contest between Kris Allen and Adam Lambert drew 100 million phone and text message votes.

Fox didn't comment on the omission. But "Idol," although still TV's top-rated show, has seen audience erosion this season that could have affected the tally. The talented but low-key Bowersox and DeWyze might also have provoked less interest.

Backstage, Bowersox was downright Zen about the results.

"I knew Lee was going to win. People seemed surprised by that, but I just had a feeling. I couldn't be happier for him. He deserves every minute of this," she said, looking as calm and cheerful as she has throughout the season.

She viewed the outcome as "winner and non-winner," not winner and loser.

"Both of us are going to have very successful careers and we're going to be friends for a long time," she said of DeWyze.

Before the show, DeWyze was equally philosophical: "Whether I win, which will be amazing, or I came in second, this is a new beginning for me career-wise and in my life," he said.

The finale made the most of Simon Cowell's last appearance as a judge. A film package recounting highlights from the Cowell years was shown and comedian Dane Cook came on stage to sing "Simon Says," made up of the Brit's barbed comments, and to crack a few jokes.

"You have the honesty of Abe Lincoln and the charm of the guy who shot him," Cook told Cowell, who took the ribbing with a smile.

The walk down memory lane continued with ex-judge Paula Abdul, who often played Cowell's sparring partner during the seasons the shared.

"I've loved all the fun we've had together," Abdul told Cowell. "`American Idol's' not gonna be the same without you. But as only I can you, it will go on."

Cowell, in turn, shed his usual cool in an on-stage appearance.

"I didn't think I was going to be this emotional and I genuinely am. ... Everybody asks who's going to replace me, who going to be the next judge. The truth is," he told the audience, "you guys are the judge of this show and you've done an incredible job over the years."

The finale, as usual, was stuffed with humor, including the return of Larry "Pants on the Ground" Platt and William Hung, return appearances by former contestants and music stars.

Kris Allen, last year's winner, sang "The Truth," with Carrie Underwood, Michael McDonald, Christina Aguilera, Hall & Oates, Robin and Barry Gibb, Janet Jackson and Joe ****er were among those whose performances were scattered throughout the two-hour show.

Bret Michaels, the ailing former Poison frontman and reality TV star, joined "Idol" finalist Casey James on one of the band's biggest hits, "Every Rose Has Its Thorn."

David Cook, a past "Idol" winner, was unable to attend because of a charity commitment, Fox said.

Bowersox, with a distinctive, Janis Joplinesque-voice and whose status as a single mom and warmth earned her the nickname "Mama Sox," had basked in praise Tuesday.

"You took that song and you absolutely nailed it," Cowell said of Bowersox's rendition of "Black Velvet," a song he said he's normally "allergic" to because it gets murdered.

The assessments of DeWyze were respectful but more measured — with Ellen DeGeneres the exception.

"Lee, I couldn't be prouder if I birthed you myself," she told him after he sang Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer."

DioGuardi admired DeWyze as an "emotionally accessible" singer after he performed R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" as his second number, but Cowell urged him to try harder.

"When you come out for your last performance, I want a 10 out of 10, because you're capable of that," Cowell told him.

With U2's "Beautiful Day," Jackson welcomed hearing "the guy with the strong big rock voice" and DioGuardi said he had "one of the most commercial voices of the season" and deserved to be in the finale.

Cowell, who had pointed to DeWyze as the frontrunner before the finale performances, said that "American Idol" was designed for someone like DeWyze, who worked in a paint shop when he tried out for the show and needed a break.

DeWyze's first single will be "Beautiful Day," which he performed Tuesday.

Seacrest, who appeared to have an on-air testy relationship with Cowell this season, had only warm words for him Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We really are going to miss you. You are a dear friend and we wouldn't be here without you," Seacrest said.

Cowell isn't going far: He's going to produce and judge "The X Factor," a Fox version of his popular British talent contest.

Lee DeWyze Admits 'American Idol' Theme Weeks Were 'Frustrating'

'There's some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it,' he says.

Lee DeWyze proved on "American Idol" that everyone truly loves an underdog. He might not have started out as a bold-faced name on season nine, but his consistent growth from ball-of-nerves to confident rocker resonated with America and landed him the coveted crown on Wednesday night.

We caught up with Lee on Friday (May 28) to talk about the show's frustrating theme weeks, how he chose U2's "Beautiful Day" as his first single and what his upcoming album will sound like.

Q: The judges often talk about showing who you'll be as an artist, but then you're forced to sing songs out of your comfort zone with the different theme weeks. Was that frustrating?

A: I think a big part about "American Idol" that scares people and has, I'm sure, stopped people from trying out is the fact that you do have to do things that aren't necessarily your genre. You're given a song, and you do have some say in it, but you go with whatever song you have to go with. You take that song, and the judges always say, "Make it your own! Make it your own!" And sometimes it sounds repetitive when they say that. ... I just wanted to take every song and make it sound like a song that Lee sang. The judges credited me; they said, "You had some great arrangements." We were given free reign to arrange songs the way we wanted. That was what got me through that part, because if it was just "Go up there and sing the songs exactly like they're written," then that would have been a lot more difficult than it was. When we did Shania Twain Week, that was a rough week for me, because it's so out of my element. But I did what I could with the song. It's part of the game, though. That's what "American Idol" is: It's "go up on the stage, play a cover song, and do the best you can your way and make them original." I think that I was able to do that. It was frustrating at times, I won't lie. It was. Because there's some songs I never would have sang in a million years, but I signed up for it, and that's the rules. You play by 'em, and you get by as best you can.

Q: This season, you also have a cover song as your first single. How did you feel about that, and how did you choose that particular song?

A: I like that song a lot. It's a really good song. Is it something that's necessarily in my genre? No. But again, there were songs on the table, and that was the one I thought would represent the moment the best, because this year they didn't have an original song written for this specifically. Whatever the reasons for that are — there's reasons. [Laughs.] I don't know all the ups and downs of the behind-the-scenes stuff. It's just been a big game of "play by the rules." If it was up to me, there were certain things I would have done differently. Like onstage, maybe a little bit longer sets would have been cool; to be able to get into the song, instead of just "ready, go." But again, that's all part of it. Just being able to accept it was the hard part. But then, once you accept it, you can just roll with it. You can make the songs your own, and then move on.

Q: What artists could you see yourself channeling on your upcoming album?

A: I just got the Kings of Leon album [Only by the Night]. I liked their first albums a lot; they were a little harder. I really dig their newest album. I like that sound. That's a sound I go for a lot of the time. It's very gritty, but at the same time, it's got great hooks and great lyrics. They break it down, and they can be a little more chill [or] a little more heavy. I'm always looking for new music. I'm going to be listening to a lot of different things for inspiration.

Q: Were you able to talk to Simon Cowell after the show?

A: I did see Simon [at the "Idol" wrap party], and we cheers'ed, and he said, "Congratulations," and told me he's proud of me, and he's excited to be working with me. And I told him, "Thanks for the opportunity," because without "American Idol," I wouldn't have had this platform to start a career on a major level. It was cool. We got to spend a little time together and talk. And it was a moment I won't forget, because that was a big moment for me.

Will Justin Timberlake Replace Simon Cowell on Idol?

No one was under the illusion that Simon Cowell would be easy to replace.

And, as speculation about who will sit in the hot seat he’s vacated on American Idol continues, two more big names have hit the radar: Both Justin Timberlake and Elton John are on producer Simon Fuller‘s short list, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

What about the future of the current judges? Sources tell THR that FOX is looking to lure back ex-Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe, who has said he would clean house if it were up to him.

The judge most likely to be left standing is Randy Jackson, according to THR, but it would also be difficult to let go Ellen DeGeneres, who has a multi-year contract with FOX. According to a source in her camp, she’s prepared to fulfill the contract, THR reports. Kara DioGuardi‘s deal is year-to-year, and it has yet to be renewed.

Elton and Justin join Chris Isaak, Shania Twain, and Harry Connick Jr. on the list of possible replacements. –Sara Hammel

Ellen DeGeneres Bows Out of American Idol

July 29, 2010

ellen-degeneres-240.jpg

Filling Simon Cowell‘s seat on American Idol was already a tough task –- now another chair is there for the taking.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who became a full-time judge on the show during its ninth season, is bowing out of the series, PEOPLE has learned.

“A couple months ago, I let FOX and the American Idol producers know that this didn’t feel like the right fit for me,” she says in a statement. “I told them I wouldn’t leave them in a bind and that I would hold off on doing anything until they were able to figure out where they wanted to take the panel next. It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.”

DeGeneres adds, “I also realized this season that while I love discovering, supporting and nurturing young talent, it was hard for me to judge people and sometimes hurt their feelings. I loved the experience working on Idol and I am very grateful for the year I had, I am a huge fan of the show and will continue to be.”

In the same statement, Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller says, “I loved Ellen’s passion for the artists and her nurturing skills. She brought honesty and optimism to our judging panel and I will miss her greatly.”

Peter Rice, the FOX entertainment chairman, says, “We love Ellen and understand and support her decision to bow out of Idol. We were fortunate to receive the humor, energy and love for talent that she brought to the show.”

A longtime fan of Idol, DeGeneres signed on to replace Paula Abdul after Abdul Tweeted about her departure in August 2009. “I’m going to have a day job and a night job,” DeGeneres said at the time. “This is exciting for me.”

In January, Cowell announced he was leaving to concentrate on bringing his U.K. hit The X Factor to the U.S. – Cynthia Wang

Source: Jennifer Lopez to Become Judge on American Idol

July 30, 2010

jennifer_lopez240.jpg

Is Jennifer Lopez adding a new job to her resume?

An industry source tells PEOPLE that the singer-actress has closed a deal to become a permanent judge on American Idol‘s season 10. “It’s true,” says one insider. “She’s excited about it.”

The news comes the same day that Ellen DeGeneres announced she was stepping down from her position as Idol‘s newest judge. The talk show host announced her departure, saying, “It was a difficult decision to make, but my work schedule became more than I bargained for.”

According to another source, Lopez’s longtime manager, Benny Medina, orchestrated the deal. Lopez, 41, mom of twins Max and Emme, will join judges Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi on the panel. She previously served as a guest mentor to contestants in 2007.

Simon Cowell also announced his departure from the show earlier this year.

Fox has not officially announced any replacements for Cowell or DeGeneres, and had no comment about whether Lopez would be joining the show.

Deadline Hollywood first reported the news. – Liz McNeil and Marisa Laudadio

Kara DioGuardi Fired from 'American Idol,' Report Says

Published July 30, 2010 | FOX News

Kara DioGuardi has been fired from American Idol, TMZ reports.

The show will be going back to a three-judge format and will consist of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, according to the celebrity website.

DioGuardi's only hope to remain on the show is if the Lopez deal falls through.

The report comes hours after judge Ellen DeGeneres announced she was leaving the show.

The show's most popular and controversial host, Simon Cowell, quit the show this year after its ninth season to focus on his own reality show, "The X Factor."

Nigel Lythgoe on the judges panel: 'It's about how these individuals sit together'

USA TODAY's Bill Keveney interviewed returning American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for Thursday's paper.

"I'm back because it was tough being away," Nigel tells Bill. "And it was tough to watch things going down. I was never happy with the four judges, and I was watching the chemistry sort of be lost."

Nigel says -- as he has before -- that he's a fan of the three-judge panel but adds that he could be convinced to bring in a fourth if it creates the right chemistry.

"It isn't about individuals. It's about how these individuals sit together, so that when Simon Cowell appeared to turn his back on Ellen [DeGeneres], she lost confidence, and I think the panel lost chemistry. It's the same when Ryan and Simon were bantering this year. There was no warmth there."

Nigel also offered his assessment of some of the celebrity names most often mentioned in connection with the judges' panel for next season.

  • Jennifer Lopez. "She's had a brilliant career. She has been inspirational to so many kids. The credentials are incredible for her to be able to judge anybody. She is one of the warmest people that I've met; she's done So You Think You Can Dance a number of times now. She knows the business and is tough. She'll be honest about it."
  • Steven Tyler. "Tyler is a rock legend, and he's been through the worst part of it, too. I think he would probably be the one I would be interested to turn on to watch, not knowing what he was going to say and where he's going to come from. As a TV producer, I love that."
  • Elton John. "I would put (him) in first place for me because I know him so well. I've worked with him and seen his talent. He can be bitchy. He is obviously knowledgeable. I don't know if you saw one of his programs, Tantrums and Tiaras. An Elton John tantrum is certainly worth tuning in for."
  • Justin Timberlake. "He is probably the biggest star of his generation and has a great handle on music. He started as a kid, obviously (on The All New Mickey Mouse Club), and is a warm person. So I would welcome him from that point of view, as a judge."
  • Harry Connick Jr. "Lovable, I think. He is a housewife's choice. very much looks-wise in the (Simon) Cowell mold, dark, cool, good-looking. He has a knowledge of music, right across the board. Plus, he has great warmth and humor, and humor for me would be the thing to tie a panel together."
  • Shania Twain. "Shania's terrific. Again, she's had a great career. She's turned country music into pop music. I think you would choose either Shania or Jennifer, but I do not think you would have the two on the same panel. Either one of them is tremendous. I know Jennifer, so of course I'm going to root for Jennifer."

The list of contenders competing for a spot on the American Idol season 10 judges’ panel continues to shrink. A source close to the talks tells EW that Harry Connick Jr., Shania Twain, Chris Isaak, Justin Timberlake, and Jessica Simpson — all of whom have been mentioned in the last two weeks as possible replacements for Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres — are now considered “highly unlikely” to get a full-time gig on Fox’s ratings behemoth.

If the J.Lo deal falls into place, said the source, there’s virtually no chance you’ll see a second woman sitting alongside her. What’s more, the insider added, “the panel really has to appeal to a wide berth — from your 10-year-old niece to your grandmother. I don’t think every person who’s been rumored for the position necessarily fits that bill.”

Fox officially announced this morning that former Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who has previously gone on the record saying he favors a three-person judging panel, is returning to that position for the show’s upcoming season. [Get full details on that announcement on our Hollywood Insider blog.] There are at least two advantages to trimming the number of permanent judges from four (which Idol maintained during its eighth and ninth seasons) to three (the magic number over the show’s initial seven seasons), added the source. For starters, a smaller panel leaves more time to focus on contestants. Secondly, an odd number of judges more easily enforces the idea of a “majority rule” when the judges are in disagreement about a particular performance, the source contended.

The definitive ouster of Connick, Twain, Isaak, Timberlake, and Simpson from the Idol contenders’ list gives more fuel to the widely rumored notion that Lopez, Steven Tyler, and existing judge Randy Jackson are the front-runners to sit behind the traditional Idol Coke cups when season 10 audition call-backs begin to take place in September. In an interview with USA Today, Lythgoe said he was rooting for Lopez over Twain, and said that Tyler “would probably be the one I would be interested to turn on to watch, not knowing what he was going to say.” Lythgoe called Jackson the “barnacle” of the Idol ship when talking to Variety last night.

Are you sad to see Connick, Twain, Isaak, Timberlake, or Simpson fall from contention for the Idol judging gig? Or conversely, are you relieved to see any of them crossed off the list? Source: Jennifer Lopez Out as American Idol Judge
August 11, 2010

jennifer_lopez240.jpg

Jennifer Lopez won’t be a judge on American Idol after all, according to a source close to the situation.

The singer-actress had been closing a deal to be a permanent judge on the show for its upcoming 10th season but the deal fell apart.

“Her demands got out of hand,” says the source. “Fox had just had enough.”

With Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres both departing the talent search, the network had been pursuing a number of celebrities as potential judges, including Aerosmith‘s Steven Tyler.

But now that Lopez is out of the running, the network may be looking at their earlier top picks again.

Other reports have said that the panel could go back to the original three-judge format.

Fox had no comment. A rep for Lopez did not immediately return calls for comment.

A source with knowledge of the negotiations says "American Idol" wants country singer Shania Twain as a judge.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- "American Idol" producers are pursuing country star Shania Twain as a possible judge for the TV competition, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The talks with Twain began after she got favorable reviews for her appearance as a mentor on "American Idol" in April, the source said.

"Shania loves the show," the source said. "Like everyone else, she's dying to see who the next 'American Idol' judge will be."

Twain's role as a judge would need to be defined in a way that would make sense creatively for an artist of her stature, the source said.

The source is not named because he is not authorized to comment on the situation.

Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres have left the show, prompting a search for two new celeb judges.

AI Has Their Own Back Up Plan, J.LO!

Filed under: American Idol > Jennifer Lopez

diva.jpg

Ready for this one, Miz Jenny From the Block!

If for some divalicous reason J.LO decides not to accept what we're sure is a generous offer from American Idol to judge, the execs are going to kick her sassy ass to the curb and got a little bit country.

Sources say that their next choice for the judge's seat is Shania Twainmag-glass_10x10.gif. She was a real hit with audiences during her stint as guest judge last season during auditions and she's even mentored a time or two.

We don't know, Jen. Sounds like they are cuing up Man, I Feel Like A Woman in the Idol control room. You better make a decision!

Tick, tock! Tick, tock!

Will Shania Twain Be a Judge on American Idol?

August 12, 2010

Jennifer Lopez’s American Idol negotiations may have gone south, but a superstar may still end up on the judging panel for season 10 of FOX’s hit show. Shania Twain has long been at the top of the network’s list, according to a source close to the singer.

“They’ve been after her ever since she was a mentor on the show last season,” the source says. “And they haven’t given up.”

Twain stepped in for the Chicago auditions and “everyone thought she was a great addition to the judges’ table,” a show source said at the time. She also mentored the contestants in April.

Her name came up — along with other celebs, including Elton John, Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr. — as a possible permanent judge after Simon Cowell announced his departure last year.

“Shania’s a huge fan of the show and she had a great time as a mentor,” the source says.

Asked whether she’ll join the show, Twain’s rep had no comment.

FOX has no comment except to note that no judges have been confirmed yet for the show.

Idol wants Shania Twain, says QMI

Posted By QMI Agency (Quebec Media Inc.)

Forget J Lo. American Idol wants Shania Twain most of all.

The Canadian country superstar is the celebrity musician that Idol producers always have wanted most as their next judge, QMI Agency has learned.

A day after it was reported that Jennifer Lopez was dropped from consideration because her demands "got out of hand," and on the day reports claimed Twain was the program's "Plan B" after Lopez, a source told QMI Agency on Thursday that the Timmins, Ont., native is the frontrunner now, and always has been.

Judges Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres quit at the end of Season 9, during which Twain was a hit as guest judge and mentor.

"The American Idol producers were overwhelmingly pleased with Shania's guest spot as judge," the source says. "They have been keen to have her back full-time."

Maybe being on AI will light her tail to come out with new music that's if she isn't coming out with an album in 2011 when her show on Oprah comes out. She needs to experience music and fans all over again. I think she got skittish about being out in public after the Up Tour and this would be a fantastic experience for her. I hope she decides to take the post.

'Idol' eyes Shania

A source told The Post yesterday that "Idol" executives had requested a meeting with Twain's reps.

Twain, whose name has been floated in connection with "Idol" and ruled out within recent weeks, may end up bumping singer/actress Jennifer Lopez -- who is reportedly out of the running thanks to her diva antics and over-the-top pay demands.

Executives say Twain's mainstream appeal, coupled with her endearing personal story, could be just the ticket for the show.

The publicity over the judges shakeup has kept "Idol" in the headlines for weeks as talks continue.

Twain is already signed up to front a personal-improvement show, "Why Not? With Shania Twain," for Oprah Winfrey's new cable network, OWN.

Twain has been discussing publicly how she's recovered from her divorce from music industry executive Robert Lange, finalized in July.

The Canadian songstress was a hit when she sat in on "Idol" auditions last season.

A Fox spokesperson had no comment.

Citing a source close to the show, EW is reporting that Fox is basically just kicking back and reveling in the 'round the clock obsession over who will take over the seats at the judges' table. “It’s the perfect position to be in,” the source says, adding that the network probably will wait until the end of the month to make the announcement. Oh, and as for those rumors about J. Lo's total diva-tude causing her name to fall out of the race? A different source "close to the negotiations" says "no deals have fallen apart due to unreasonable demands," adding "this is an extremely high-profile gig, and you’d better believe no one — male or female — has been unreasonable at the negotiating table.” [EW]

Mariah, Britney, Shania: Which Superstar Singers Could Be Idol Judges?

Today 9:52 AM PDT by KEN BAKER AND JENNIFER ARROW

American Idol wants to hire a megafamous singer to judge season 10, and they've reached out to the high-wattage likes of Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Shania Twain and more.

Which divas are still in the running, who's playing hard to get, and which eager young reality TV star and sometime pop tart is making it known that she wants the job? E! News has the exclusive inside dish on who's on the list and who's out in the cold:

Idol is just weeks away from shooting season 10's audition episodes, and they still haven't put butts in all of the seats at their judges' table.

An Idol insider tells E! News that Fox is still actively in talks with potential judges and exclusively shares the following updates on the ongoing efforts:

·           Britney Spears: "They offered it to Britney, but she passed."
·           Shania Twain: "They're in talks."
·           Mariah Carey: "They've reached out to her. She's still in the mix."
·           Janet Jackson: "She passed."
·           Paula Abdul: "They'd like her back but her deal with CBS is exclusive."
·           Jessica Simpson: "She wants to do it." But, apparently, she's not at the top of Fox's list.

Not too shabby a lineup, right?! Even if Idol does seem to have some problems with personnel churn, at least they've got pretty high-class candidates on their short list for the job.

In addition to the candidates above, Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler, who was named early on as a contender, is also considered a likely new hire for Idol, and the show was reportedly in advanced talks with Jennifer Lopez, but those negotiations may very well have fallen apart. Why? Well, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox balked when, "Lopez asked for north of $20 million—plus her own hair, makeup, styling team and her own 'dressing room compound' (not dissimilar to Cowell's posh trailer)."

Returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, however, spoke to E! News last night at he So You Think You Can Dance finale, and defended La Lopez, saying, "There's so many stories out there and one of [them is that] J.Lo is a diva. J.Lo has never been a diva. Jennifer is not a diva. [She] is a beautiful woman [who] cares so much...If she is going to be a judge, she will know how to judge because she knows the industry."

Meanwhile, despite all that talk of Howard Stern being in contention, the Idol insider says, "He was never under consideration. That was a tabloid rumor that Howard perpetuated in his own self interest."

In case you haven't been following along with the exciting behind-the-scenes developments at the biggest reality TV show in the United States, the three original American Idol judges were Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. Paula departed after season eight, and Simon left at the end of season nine to launch a new Fox reality show, The X Factor.

Songwriter Kara DioGuardi joined the lineup the year before Abdul left, serving as something like an understudy for the daffy '80s pop star. And talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres joined up last year for what was supposed to be a multiyear stint.

But Ellen announced her resignation earlier this summer, and Kara is possibly (but not definitely) being let go from the show, and our inside source confirms she's "upset" that Fox has not been communicating with her recently. Even reliable old Randy Jackson told the Television Critics Association Press Tour earlier this month, "The only thing that's for sure is Ryan [Seacrest]." (For what it's worth, we have it on good authority that Randy Jackson is participating in the opening of the Emmy Awards—perhaps that's a good sign that he'll remain with the show?)

We'll know Fox's final decision soon enough, but in the meantime, we can handicap to our heart's content.

Who do you think will get the American Idol judging jobs? Would you prefer Mariah or Shania to J.Lo?

First of all, the producers wanted Shania from the start, but that fell though.  But they are not giving up on her.  Shania was a big hit on that show as a judge and mentor.  Shania's star has not fallen.  Her records still sell, (selling about 80 to 90 million records worldwide), and this whole thing of maybe becoming an American Idol judge is all over the internet, the entertainment shows, and the press.  The fans want Shania to become a judge alot more than J-Lo.  So, if Shania's star is fallen, why would the press go crazy over this (other than saying about J-Lo's diva demands)?  Now, there saying that the next plan C and D is Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.  Does that mean their star is falling?

If Shania doesn't get the job on American Idol, I won't be disappointed at all.  I think American Idol is just using her name along with Mariah Carey, and Britney Spears to get people interested in AI again.  Of course, these are all just rumors.  I just hope she will have new music soon.

'American Idol' Fans Want Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain As Judges

'Idol' followers also name Harry Connick Jr. and Steven Tyler as good picks to judge the 10th season.

Auditions for the 10th season are in full swing, however, as the Fox hit continues to comb the country for new talent, producers still have not confirmed a final judges lineup. Fans waiting to check out the American Idols Live! Tour in Los Angeles on Friday (August 13), offered suggestions about who should dish out feedback when the next season kicks off.

"Gene Simmons would have been amazing," George Garcia told MTV News. "Howard Stern too because Howard Stern [has] that mouth." Garcia said that Jennifer Lopez, a much-rumored addition to the "Idol" panel, could have added "flavor, but I heard she was asking for outrageous stuff."

Diane Emerson is rooting for onetime mentor Harry Connick Jr. to return to the show as a permanent judge.

"When he helped them be a mentor, he helped them so much, each and every one of them," Emerson said. "He knew what he was talking about and I think he should become a judge."

Chloe Coleman is on Team J. Lo and said, "Jennifer Lopez would be interesting."

Kayla Erath said Lopez' star power would mean an uptick in viewers. "I think it would be cool if J. Lo's on it because she's really famous and a lot more people will watch if another famous person is on it."

Sarah Garman said that she's down to have Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler join the amateur talent behemoth "to add a little rock [to] it." "That'd be hilarious," Garman smiled. Her pal Jill Davy added, "Yeah, I think they need some rock and roll."

The ladies also said they were up for another buzzed-about singer, Shania Twain, to take a seat at the judges' table. Garman mentioned that Shania would bring "a little country, a little twang," to the competition. Davy also pointed out that Twain, who appeared as a guest judge on the ninth season, already has experience. "Shania's done it before," said Davy.

Chloe Song said that the folks behind "Idol" would probably do well with any of the big-name celebs that have been mentioned as possible additions to the show.

"I think Steven Tyler, Shania Twain and J. Lo are all really well-known singers so I think they'll have really good thoughts and opinions on the 'American Idol' contestants," Song said.

Amanda Slater didn't single out one person in particular but insisted that "Idol" needs someone with the same blunt approach to giving feedback as former judge Simon Cowell.

"I think it needs to be someone that can be harsh like Simon," Slater said. "Otherwise [the show is] too nice. Simon gave the real answers. He was tough but it was needed."

Danielle Slater said that whoever joins the panel next, needs to know what he or she is talking about. "[The show needs] somebody that's good with music [and has] a lot of experience," Danielle said.

Who do you think would make a good "American Idol" judge? Tell us in the comments below!

President Obama made history today by threatening to launch a nuclear offensive against Canada, should Canadian songstress Shania Twain become a Judge on American Idol.

"That woman ruined pop music from 1997 to 2000," said Obama, when asked for justification for launching certain atomic weapons against one of this nation's greatest allies, and a country that shares a common border with the U.S. "She ain't runing A.I. as well.

"I heard 'Man, I Feel Like a Woman' coming out of Michelle's iPod while on Air Force One," said Obama, referring to the President's aircraft, named after his favorite type of Nike sneaker. "I almost threw that bitch out of the plane."

Obama has not kept secret his love for America's gayest karaoke showcase, as well as how important next year's replacement judges are to him: "Look, I had to put up with them firing Paula Abdul; I dealt with that dude Ellen DeGeneres; I sat through 'Teen Idols Week'; I had to stare into the mess that was Crystal Bowersox's dental work. But I will not -- NOT!-- listen to a hack like Shania Twain for 6 hours a week."

Shania Twain is a finalist to become a permanent judge on 'American Idol, report several news sources including People magazine.

Shania is the newest names being bandied about after Jennifer Lopez listened to her debut album "On The Six", and realized that she had no f--king right to judge anyone else's singing. It does seem clear that the show's negotiations with Jennifer have ended.

Shania was an early contender for the judge's chair, People Magazine reports. Her name was on something of a dream list of possible judges that also included Elton John, Chris Isaak and Harry Connick Jr.

"I swear to f--king God, 20 minutes after I see that talentless meatsack plop her ass down next to Randy Jackson, "said Obama. "Residents of Windsor, Ontario are going to see a bright flash of light, and wonder why their skin feels so hot.

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.

AI's just desperate at this point and they'll bring any celeb with a pulse. They should've stuck with Shania from the get go. Then they hired Ellen who has nothing to do with music, if you can consider her dancing music knowledge. Jlo may be hot as an actress, but she is hardly a singer. I don't think she's ever gone on tour or sung live. At least Britney did that at some point. They might as well have Kermit the Frog and Barney as judges at this point.

Steven Tyler’s American Idol Deal Reportedly Done

Steven Tyler’s American Idol Deal Reportedly Done

According to James Hibberd's "two sources near the talks," Steven Tyler has officially signed a deal to serve as a judge on American Idol's next season. Hibberd says Tyler asked for "considerably less money" than Jennifer Lopez, who reportedly demanded $20 million, pricing herself out (Fox may or may not be negotiating now with Shania Twain to be judge No. 3, alongside Tyler and, presumably, Randy Jackson). If this means fewer off-key renditions of "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" on Idol, we're all for it.

Sources: ‘American Idol’ has signed Tyler [Live Feed/HR]

Shania Twain in running from start as “fourth” Idol judge

A source in the midst of the “American Idol” negotiations tells Gossip Cop that irrespective of whether they strike a deal with Jennifer Lopez, “Shania Twain was being considered as a fourth judge from the start.”

The source said should Lopez and the producers at “American Idol” be unable to come to terms, Twain would almost assuredly be bumped into her position at the judge’s table.

Twain, you’ll recall, did a solid job last year as a guest judge.

Earlier today, Gossip Cop noted – as we exclusively announced last month – that Steven Tyler is on board as a judge.

An official announcement about who will join the judges’ panel is expected within the next two weeks.

American Idol 2011 Vegas predictions & Vegas Odds - J-Lo say No to American Idol

American Idol 2011 Vegas predictions & Vegas Odds - J-Lo say No to American Idol::  The Vegas predictions say "J Lo is no longer in the running" – Who will sit by Tyler?  According to LA times Steven Tyler has signed on and will be one of  next years American Idol judges, while J Lo and her “larger than life” attitude (even with her sinking ratings) will not take a judge position.  According to American Idol she is seeking  20 million dollar compensation, which is beyond  Idols budget for what appears to be a “has been” actress/singer.

Vegas Predictions for 2011 American Idol judges show Shania Twain in the lead:  Shania Twain seems like the lead contender with odds of 3/1.  Shania has taken home over 180 awards since 1993 from the Canadian Country Music Awards to the CMA’s and has years of talent to prove she is worthy of the final idol judge position.

However: Madonna carries some weight in this category and why shouldn’t she.  This pop star diva has carried the world to new heights when it comes to originality and talent.  Her years of transformation has always shown her to be versatile and creative.  Madonna has  plent y of experience to offer the contestants and the Vegas odds show her to be of interest to Idol at 6/1.

Since Steven Tyler has signed on there is more to be seen with who will take the next position.  Lots of talent out there but, without Simon Cowell the show could be in rating troubles.    I believe they are looking in the right area, but I also believe Madonna to be the better pick in entertaining the crowd vs. Shanai’s realistic views.  This would be the chance for people to better see Madonna’s personality in full force.  Steven Tyler and Madonna?  That could be cosmic combination worth watching.  Idol will really need to think this one out and will have to rely on the talents of their selection to keep American Idol 2011 in the ratings.  Who will sit by Tyler?  Vegas predictions will show you who’s on the “Borderline”.

Looks like we have to wait a few more weeks for a decision.

Keep guessing about 'Idol': Lythgoe

"I guess the decision has got to be made within the next three weeks," said Nigel Lythgoe, the creator of "So You Think You Can Dance" who has been re-hired by "Idol" to revive the flagging franchise.

Steven Tyler, the lead singer for Aerosmith, has reportedly signed to become the newest judge on the show -- as the show scrambles to rebuild following the departures of judges Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres.

The show was in San Francisco, the final stop on a six-city audition tour that has been going since last month without a judges panel to make the final decisions on which hopefuls get sent through to Hollywood.

Those scenes will be taped later, when the panel is finalized.

"I think decisions have been made, and negotiations are taking place," Lythgoe told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show.

He said the talks have been hard because the show is going after performers like Jennifer Lopez and Shania Twain. Getting them to commit to "Idol" from February to May without interruption has been harder than he thought.

Mariah Carey Still an Option for American Idol

Mariah Carey is still in negotiations to sign on as a judge, a source exclusively tells E! News.

"She wants it," says the source. "She's seen what America's Got Talent has done for [hubby Nick Cannon] and thinks it will be a good career move."

When contacted Thursday evening for comment, a rep for Carey didn't confirm or deny, responding only that there is "nothing to report."

Several sticking points remain, but we hear that Fox is optimistic that they will make a deal with Carey.

The network did not return a request for comment.

The source familiar with negotiations adds that the show's deal with Steven Tyler is "all but a done deal" and an announcement will be made after the entire judges table is filled.

Right now, the source says, the ideal plan is to have Randy Jackson, Tyler and Carey, with a possible alternating guest judge's chair. "Randy and Mariah have great chemistry," says the source. However, nothing is set in stone as of yet.

In case you never heard Jackson say it before, he and Mariah have worked together. Wink-wink.

The source adds that returning executive producer Nigel Lythgoe prefers a three-judge panel, but what ultimately happens will depend on how the remaining negotiations pan out.

Jennifer Lopez Reportedly Near an American Idol Deal

By Lane Brown
Posted 9/2/10 at 4:45 PM

Better luck next time, Shania Twain: TMZ says Jennifer Lopez is "in the final stages of negotiations" to join Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson at the American Idol judges' table. Earlier reports said she'd priced herself out by demanding $20 million per year, but TMZ's sources say "there has been no drama and no diva demands … It's been typical negotiating." A signed deal is expected sometime next week. Oh well.

Jennifer Lopez Seals American Idol Deal – For $12 Million

September 14, 2010

Kara DioGuardi
out — Jennifer Lopez back in.

A month after the singer-actress’s initial deal with American Idol fell apart — thanks, in part, to demands that had gotten “out of hand,” according to a source — Lopez will after all be joining the judging panel for the show’s upcoming 10th season, sources tell PEOPLE.

Lopez’s $12 million contract, which was first reported by Deadline.com, comes two weeks after DioGuardi confirmed she was leaving the show, following in the footsteps of both Simon Cowell and new judge Ellen DeGeneres.

According to the report, Lopez was hoping for movie and TV development deals to accompany and even larger Idol salary as well as input about her new co-judges, but Fox made no commitments and she settled for a cool $12.

“She’s very excited,” a source close to Lopez says of the final deal.

Fox has no comment and a rep for Lopez did not return calls for comment.

No official word on who may be Lopez’s fellow judges but Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler said he will “probably” be a judge. Shania Twain, Harry Connick Jr., Elton John and Chris Isaak had also been rumored as possibilities. –Eunice Oh

Simon Cowell also gave his verdicts on his possible replacements on American Idol, Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain and Steven Tyler. He said: "I think they are all good people, interesting people.

"Shania, we worked with, and I liked her.

"Jennifer, I got to know quite well. I've never met Steven, but I think he would be interesting."

Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler Announced As New Idol Judges

Wednesday September 22, 2010 01:15 PM EDT

It's official!

Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler will be joining Randy Jackson at the judges' table when American Idol kicks off season 10 in January.

"I'm looking for the next Michael Jackson," Lopez said before a screaming crowd at the Los Angeles Forum after Ryan Seacrest introduced her. "We're looking for the best American Idol ever."

The announcement was made during a live press conference Wednesday. Seacrest hosted the event, telling the crowd, "We are looking for the next star in music. We usually ask, who will be the next American Idol? We never asked this question, who will be the next judges on American Idol?"

Seacrest then introduced Randy Jackson, who told the crowd, "We found some unbelievable talent and I am calling season 10 the remix, baby!"

Up next, Tyler was introduced as a "rock legend." The Aerosmith frontman said joining the Idol family feels "fabulous."

"[It] feels like the perfect feathered nest," he said. "It's being a part of something much bigger than yourself. I want to bring some rock to this roller coaster."

Lopez, who dressed in a silver pant suit, was the last to be introduced.

"I love you guys. I am so excited," she told the crowd that included Idol hopefuls, there to try out for the show. "It is about concentrating in the moment, do the best you can. Just live! Just live, it's your moment."

The announcement comes with little surprise. In weeks leading up to the decision, sources told PEOPLE Lopez signed the deal worth $12 million. And Tyler himself said he would "probably" be a judge when the show returned in the winter.

Here we go again.

Jennifer Lopez Could be Replaced by Shakira or Shania Twain on 'American Idol'

by Aida Ekberg
July 04, 2011 02:30 PM EDT

Jennifer Lopez better make up her mind about whether or not she's returning to American Idol -- the show is already searching for her replacement.

It seems that appearing on American Idol has somewhat boosted J-Lo's career, as the singer/actress has a number of other projects currently lined up. In addition to planning on pimping out the single "Papi" from her album 'Love,' she's set to star in What to Expect When You're Expecting, a movie about mommyhood co-starring Brooklyn Decker, Chris Rock, Anna Kendrick, and Cameron Diaz.

With so much on her plate (including what could be the Bridesmaids of next year), it's not surprising that Jennifer Lopez is considering leaving American Idol(after all, she's also got twin toddlers to take care of at home!). However, she's currently just stalling negotiations while she tries to make up her mind about what she wants to do.

In the meantime, American Idol is already trying to find her replacement, and it looks like Shakira and Shania Twain are currently at the top of the list. Shakira has a similar Latin background to J-Lo, so it's not surprising that the pint-sized pop star is being considered. However, Shania Twain would add a little country flavor to the show, something it hasn't had before.

Of course American Idol could always try to compete with The Voice (which does feature a country singer on its panel of "coaches") by signing on a little more star power -- three celebrity judges just doesn't seem to be enough these days. So will it take two sexy singers to replace Jennifer Lopez on American Idol, or will she decide to try and find time to stay on the show? It seems like she's leaning toward not returning, but she still has a little bit of time to change her mind.

With all the drama surrounding the hosts and judges of singing reality show competitions these days, producers might want to consider creating reality shows about what goes on behind the scenes, and if Jennifer Lopez does leave, Fox could always make a little extra cash by creating a celebrity-filled reality competition to find her replacement (such a show might prove to be just as popular as American Idol itself as viewers tune in to see who will show up).
