Even though Jennifer Lopez has yet to actually address her future on "American Idol," the rumor mill is already churning away that the producers behind the hit show are already having to figure out a contingency plan.
According to the Daily Mail, there are two primary candidates to come on board as a judge should Lopez walk away.
Shakira: The "She-Wolf" singer would certainly bring an international flair to the panel, which is important if the show wants to keep people from all demographics talking. When it comes to broad demographics, this may be a solid choice -- though we also don't know what her ability to judge would be.
Shania Twain: She was incredibly entertaining as a fourth guest judge for season nine, and she also would keep the country audience tuned in. However, ratings for her OWN series show that she is not necessarily the draw she used to be, and she also has a residency coming up in Las Vegas that could produce many a schedule conflict beyond next season.
Lopez does not have any sort of timeline for a decision, and her busy schedule (which includes both a reality show about Latin music and two film roles) could be problematic.
What are you hoping happens here, and what do you think about this rumor?
I thought Why Not?! had pretty good ratings for a cable network show. I think some people just want to see her fail and dont understand that Shania's core fans dont have unrealistic expectations and I dont think Shania does either. Frankly, I dont care how many thousands/millions of people watch/buy her shows and music. I will watch everytime she appears on a show and I will buy every album/single she releases. We know TV and Radio have changed since Shania's ''peek'' but luckily we can buy her music to listen to all we want without having to listen to the music we dont like. I really enjoyed watching her on Idol and would love her to do it full time.
If I was Shania and had to choose between the two, I'd pick AI over Las Vegas. AI is broadcast in many parts of the world and is more accessible to her international fans than 'Why Not' which is only available to US and Canadian fans at the moment and on a cable channel which not everyonce receives. In the UK AI is shown on the digital freeview channel ITV2 so I would be able to tune in and watch. This would no doubt attract a new generation of fans, and it would help plug her music at the same time just as it's put Jennifer Lopez at the top of the charts again. Las Vegas is just an overpriced venue and too far for those of us who would have to travel overseas and make accommodation arrangements, etc. Shania could showcase any new music on the AI stage. She was a great judge and mentor on previous episodes, and is well respected in the music industry.
I hope Shania does both. Vegas and AI...they tape AI so there should not be any conflicts in scheduling except for maybe the live shows and if they plan ehough ahead that could be worked out also. I guess it all depends on how badly AI wants Shania to be a judge. She has already signed the contract with VEgas so I do not think backing out on that is an option.
Jennifer Lopez has been non-committal about returning to the judge’s table for a second season of ‘American Idol.’ PopEater reports that the producers are engaging in a little preemptive strike and looking for a possible replacement for her, should she decide to move on from the show that made Scotty McCreery a star. One name that is being bandied about to fill her sky-high Louboutins is none other than country’s Shania Twain.
While ‘Idol’ was credited with resurrecting Lopez’s somewhat sagging music career, Twain is on her way back up the music business ladder after a lengthy hiatus. Twain is just returning to performing and to the public eye via her recent reality show ‘Why Not? With Shania Twain’ and her book ‘From This Moment On.’ It could be quite the perfect fit to replace Lopez with Twain, if the stars align.
A gig as an ‘Idol’ could further boost the beloved country star’s profile into the stratosphere. While this is all speculative, we think Twain would be a great mentor on the show, especially since country music made such strides during the 10th season, with McCreery and fellow country hopeful Lauren Alaina being the last two standing. Another infusion of country on TV’s top talent competition series is fine by us!
(RTTNews) - Shania Twain may be taking over Jennifer Lopez's spot as judge on American Idol. J-Lo is currently mulling whether to stay on the show or leave.
An inside source told popeater.com that her indecision is owed to her desire to be the star of the show:
"Right now the star of American Idol is Steven Tyler. Everyone thought after Simon announced he was leaving that [Lopez] would fill the void. How wrong were they? It's all about Steven, who's already signed on for season 11."
Another source added J-Lo's star-power has proven to be low-wattage:
"Idol has resurrected her much-stalled music career. Likewise, Idol didn't fall apart when Simon left and Jennifer has to get some of the credit for that. But let's also remember the show didn't increase in ratings and that is also thanks to JLo."
Lopez has also agreed to return. A source tells me exclusively an announcement could be coming any day now.
The singer-actress said in an interview about a month ago that she hadn't decided what she was going to do.
"I don't know. I haven't been forced to make a decision and I'm glad about that because honestly I'm very on the fence about it," the first year judge told Scott Mills of BBC 1, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I had an amazing time doing it and I loved it, but I have a lot other things happening, and it's going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year and we're not really at the breaking point of 'You have to make a decision right now!' I'm just really enjoying the time of just waiting and seeing."
Lopez will be sitting at the Fox table at BAFTA's Brits to Watch gala tonight. She was invited by Fox television boss Peter Rice.
I'm told she has also surprised her mom, Lupe, by flying her to L.A. to attend the BAFTA event with her. Marc Anthony will not be there.
"American Idol" has been a launching pad for many talented young singers, and that's partly thanks to the "American Idol" guest judges. The judging dynamic was ruptured when Paula Abdul decided to leave the panel, so the producers decided to fill the void by featuring different guest judges throughout the audition process. Many judges tried and failed, others hit a home-run. Here's a list of the five best "American Idol" guest judges.
Katy Perry. Katy is hot, hot, hot right now and she brought her A-List magic onto "American Idol" in January 2010. Her honest, hate-free opinion was appreciated by contestants and the audience alike. When she didn't like something, she spoke up. Katy made headlines, however, for calling out fellow judge Kara DioGuardi. Kara wasn't giving feedback on singing performances, instead she was sympathizing with their life situations, and Katy called her on. Her honest bluntness didn't go unnoticed and rumors have been flying that she might replace the infamous Simon Cowell in future seasons.
Mary J. Blige. Mary might have been a guest judge, but she was right at home on "American Idol". She wasted no time in making her own opinions known, disagreeing with other judges and laughing in contestants faces. Although Blige was a little too audacious to ever replace the sweet Paula Abdul, she certainly made good TV. Blige didn't make it a secret when she was bored, but her unpredictable behavior and hilarious jabs put her at the top for memorable guest performances.
Neil Patrick Harris. Neil was an instant hit thanks to his magic combination of Abdul's sensitivity and Cowell's bitingly-honest wit. Neil got the job done with subtle humor that made us love him even more than we already did and he showed that he wasn't afraid to stand up to the big dogs. Neil found himself on the receiving end of Stephen Cowell's evil glare more than once, but he didn't even flinch! Hats off to Neil.
Shania Twain. Shania is not exactly on the tip of everyone's tongue—she hasn't been working in the limelight much since 2005. But once you remembered who she was and what she was famous for, Shania turned out to be pretty endearing. Shania played the role of flirty cougar on the show, and let male contestants know when they had piqued her fancy. Her comments weren't particularly entertaining or insightful, but her vibrant personality and flirtatious comments made her a memorable guest judge to watch.
Victoria Beckham. Ex-spice girl Victoria proved herself to be smarter than she looks (and sounds.) Posh Spice kept up with the big dogs on the judging panel, inserting helpful and insightful comments from time to time. Unfortunately, and this might be a British thing, she lacked the feminine sensitivity that the judging panel needed. She was fun to watch as a guest, but there is no way Victoria is ever going to be invited on as a permanent feature of the "American Idol" judging panel.
I never watch this junk, my first time seeing that was when Shania was one of the judges I could stand it for one show. I'm glad she won't never be a judge for whole season she really doesn't need all this fake show, she better do what she knows best and that's music
‘American Idol’ executive producer says Jennifer Lopez will return for hit show’s 11th season
By Associated Press | August 10, 2011
NEW YORK — An executive producer of the hit musical reality TV show “American Idol” says celebrity judge Jennifer Lopez will return for another season.
Lopez hasn’t said anything.
But executive producer Nigel Lythgoe (LITH’-goh) was on the “On-Air with Ryan Seacrest” program on Wednesday morning and made the announcement. He acknowledged it wasn’t official. But he added he was “delighted to say that all three judges” and the show’s “brilliant host” are back for the next season.
Seacrest is the show’s host. Singer-actress Lopez debuted as a judge this past season. The other judges are Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler and record producer Randy Jackson.
“American Idol” is due to return to Fox television in January for its 11th season.
She wouldn't have time to be a judge. Auditions for next season start in several cities in late Aug/early Sep. Shania will be preparing for her Vegas show.

For 11 seasons, ‘American Idol’ has ignored country music when it comes to the judges panel. But with Steven Tyler announcing his ‘Idol’ departure on Thursday, it’s time to make things right. Stars like Blake Shelton and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland have proven that Nashville has artists capable of shining on a nationally-televised stage. Which country artist do you think would be the perfect fit to replace Tyler on ‘American Idol?’
Included in today’s readers poll are five artists that have a special blend of mass appeal and willingness to pursue alternative career paths. Shania Twain has spent time on ‘American Idol,’ even guest judging in 2010. Keith Urban just finished a stint as a coach on the Australian version of ‘The Voice.’ Toby Keith would be a controversial pick, but no doubt entertaining each week. And Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have proven they can carry their star power to Hollywood, with roles in movies over the last decade.
If there is an artist from country music that you think would make a better replacement for Steven Tyler on ‘American Idol,’ tell us about it in the comments section below.
