Shania to carry Olympic torch through Timmins!

Olympic Torch relay only 92 days away

Mayor Tom Laughren posed with the Shania cutout minutes after making the
announcement about Twain's involvement in the Olympic Torch run.

Shania Twain is coming back to Timmins this winter... and she'll be carrying the Olympic Torch. The news was announced this morning by Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren and the local committee overseeing the fact that part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will be coming through Timmins on January 1, 2010.

It will be 100 years to the day that Noah Timmins arrived to inspect the gold mine claims staked in his name.

The Timmins leg of the Olympic torch relay will begin in Porcupine and carry on westward through the city. The highlight of the day will be a community celebration that takes part on the evening of New Year's Day at Fred Salvador Field beside the Hollinger Park.

Today’s announcement was made at the Shania Twain Centre.

I think people are going to be pretty excited with this announcement,” said Mayor Tom Laughren before a group of local reporters.

“The Timmins Olympic community celebration committee is elated to announce that the final leg torch runner … will be Miss Shania Twain,” said the mayor.

“Since her rise to fame, Shania has been a tireless ambassador for our community. She has taken every opportunity to expound the virtues of her hometown,” he added.

“With her generous participation, she will not only focus a wealth of attention on Timmins, but on the Olympic Torch relay and the Vancouver games as well,” he continued.

“And I know the committee, VANOC, is elated with Timmins being able to make this announcement,” Laughren concluded.

Timmins city officials said they were delighted that the country music singing sensation had agreed to come back home to take part in the event.

Twain, who is in touch with the manager of the Shania Twain Centre on a frequent basis, also released a statement.

"It is an immense honour for me to have been given the opportunity to be an Olympic Torch bearer of the 2010 Winter Olympics being held in my birth country of Canada in Vancouver, as it takes its journey through my home town of Timmins," said Twain in a prepared statement.

“It is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadians as we are all proud of our country's chance to host the upcoming winter games,” Twain statement continued.

“I have a tremendous respect for the hard work, dedication and talent of the world's greatest athletes and will humbly carry and pass on the Olympic torch with a special pride for my country's Olympians. I am grateful for this special gift of participation in carrying the flame that represents such an incredible spirit of sportsmanship and excellence and wish ALL the athletes of the 2010 Winter Olympics courage, strength and triumph during the games,” Twain continued.

“I'm sending my sincerest, best wishes to each and every one of you as you take this remarkable Olympic journey. Love, Shania”

“The torch will wind its way westbound through our community to our Olympic flame celebration at the Hollinger Park,” said Timmins Police torch run organizer Al Richardson.

Richardson says the celebration will begin at 6:00 pm (gates opening at 4:30 pm). The extravaganza will feature displays and entertainment from RBC and Coca-Cola along with local performers, dancers and singers who will entertain in advance of, and in proud anticipation of, the Torch arrival.

Halfway through the two-hour celebration program, Shania will carry the Olympic Torch on its final 300 metres to the stage where she will light the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight of what will occur during the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The celebration will end at 8:00 pm, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

Posted By CHELSEY ROMAIN, The Daily Press

Shania Twain is coming home for the holidays.

The Timmins Olympic Community Celebration committee announced Thursday that Twain has been selected as the Community Torchbearer for the city when the Olympic flame arrives on Jan. 1, 2010.

"IT's an immense honour for me to have been given the opportunity to be an Olympic Torchbearer of the 2010 winter Olympics being held in my birth country of Canada in Vancouver, as it takes its journey through my hometown of Timmins," said Mayor Tom Laughren as he quoted a message from Twain. "It is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

"I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadian as we are all proud of our country's chance to host the upcoming winter games."During a press conference Thursday morning, Laughren said Twain was the first choice as the one to bring the torch on its final leg through Timmins.

"I think when you look at her star power and her drawing power, she's always had pride in her hometown, in her country and always been very vocal about that," Laughren said. "To have her back in the community I think is going to be a very positive move and will be very well received not only by Timmins residents, but surrounding areas."

The Olympic torch ceremony begins at 6 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2010. The run itself begins in Porcupine and finishes with the lighting of the 1.3 metre celebration cauldron at Hollinger Park. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display at 8 p.m.

Excellent news! We'll be sure to see Shania wearing some Canadian Olympic Team clothing, which we can buy at the Bay or whatever!
Gee, it will be REALLY cold in Timmins on January 1st! Shania can handle it, and running will help to keep her warm.

Timmins is WAY far away from Toronto, so I'll just be watching on the tv!

Good luck Shania!

I hope Shania will perform a song at the opening or closing ceremonies! Glad to see Shania is getting 'out there' - by the way, this is so 'sporty' of her - like the skiing etc..

Shania Twain to carry Olympic torch through hometown of Timmins, Ont.

THE CANADIAN PRESS

TIMMINS, Ont. — Shania Twain will carry the Olympic torch through her northern Ontario hometown of Timmins.

The pop-country superstar says the honour "is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life."

Twain says on her website that she will carry the flame through the city on Jan. 1, 2010 as part of the Olympic Torch Relay.

The high-profile appearance comes as Twain prepares for a career comeback after her much-publicized break-up with music producer Robert (Mutt) Lange last year.

She's also set to appear on "American Idol" as a guest judge on the reality singing competition.

Twain said in a release that she is honoured to be a torch bearer for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which run Feb. 12 to 28 in Vancouver.

"I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadians as we are all proud of our country's chance to host the upcoming Winter Games," Twain said.

"I have a tremendous respect for the hard work, dedication and talent of the world's greatest athletes and will humbly carry and pass on the Olympic torch with a special pride for my country's Olympians. I am grateful for this special gift of participation in carrying the flame that represents such an incredible spirit of sportsmanship and excellence and wish all the athletes of the 2010 Winter Olympics courage, strength and triumph during the Games."

The torch will visit over 1,000 communities and will be carried by 12,000 people on a 45,000-kilometre journey.

OlYMPICS: Twain to carry flame in Timmins

Posted By CHELSEY ROMAIN THE DAILY PRESS

Shania Twain is coming home for the holidays.

The Timmins Olympic Community Celebration committee announced yesterday that Twain has been selected as the Community Torchbearer for the city when the Olympic flame arrives on Jan. 1, 2010.

"We are elated that the final leg torch runner for the Timmins community celebration will be Ms. Shania Twain," announced Mayor Tom Laughren.

"Since her rise to fame, Shania has been a tireless ambassador of our community and she has taken every opportunity to expound the virtues of her hometown."

Both Laughren and committee chairman Timmins Police Service Sgt. Al Richardson said Twain was on a long list of suggested names for the honour.

Twain's schedule and her genuine excitement to be a part of the event helped make it happen.

"It's an immense honour for me to have been given the opportunity to be an Olympic Torchbearer for the 2010 winter Olympics, being held in my birth country of Canada, in Vancouver, as it takes its journey through my hometown of Timmins," said Laughren, quoting a message from Twain.

"It is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

"I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadians as we are all proud of our country's chance to host the upcoming winter games."

During a press conference, Laughren said Twain was the first choice as the one to carry the torch on its final leg through Timmins.

"I think when you look at her star power and her drawing power, she has always had pride in her hometown, in her country and always been very vocal about that," Laughren said.

"To have her back in the community, I think, is going to be a very positive move and will be very well received, not only by Timmins residents, but surrounding areas."

Members of the local committee, as well as the Vancouver Olympics organizing committee, are looking forward to the light Twain can shine on the torch run.

Known worldwide, Richardson said she will bring vast attention to the community, as well as the games themselves.

The gates for the celebration in Timmins will open at 4:30 p. m. on Jan. 1, 2010, with the game being roughtly 90 days away. The ceremony begins at 6 p. m.

"The torch will wind its way westbound through out community to our Olympic flame celebration at the Hollinger Park," Richardson said. "Halfway through the two-hour celebration program, Shania will carry the Olympic torch in its final 300 metres to the stage, where she will be lighting the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight that will occur during the opening ceremonies at the Olympic themselves."

There will be several others chosen as torch bearers as the flame makes its way through Timmins, each holding the flame high for 300 metres, but those names are not yet known.

The event will also include entertainment and displays provided by relay partners Coca-Cola Canada and RBC, as well as local performers.

The last time Twain made a public appearance in Timmins was in 2004, when the Shania Twain Centre officially opened its doors.

The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display at 8 p. m.

Oct. 2, 2009 — The Winter Olympics take place in Vancouver next year, and in the big run-up to the event, Shania Twain will carry the Olympic torch when it arrives in her hometown on New Year’s Day.

Shania has agreed to take the torch for 300 meters in Timmins, Ontario, Sun Media reported. She’ll use the flame to light a cauldron on stage at a ceremony in a local park that evening.

Her participation is “an immense honor,” she said in a statement. “It is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadians as we are all proud of our country’s chance to host the upcoming winter games.”

Shania continues country’s Olympic legacy. Billy Ray Cyrus carried the torch in Nashville during 1996 before the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, the Dixie Chicks and LeAnn Rimes performed in the opening ceremonies before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, and Jo Dee Messina was a correspondent for Westwood One during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Country star to carry the Olympic Torch

October 2, 3:26 PMgreydot.gifColumbia Country Music Examinergreydot.gifRichie Shivers

Country music star Shania Twain has been out of the spotlight for a while, but she will be back in January as she lights up the Canadian sky with the Olympic Torch. Shania was asked to carry the Olympic Flame through her hometown of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.

The news was announced this week by Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren that part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will be coming through Timmins on January 1, 2010. “The Timmins Olympic community celebration committee is elated to announce that the final leg torch runner … will be Miss Shania Twain,” said the mayor. “Since her rise to fame, Shania has been a tireless ambassador for our community. She has taken every opportunity to expound the virtues of her hometown. With her generous participation, she will not only focus a wealth of attention on Timmins, but on the Olympic Torch relay and the Vancouver games as well,” he added.

The city of Timmons, its residents and the Mayor are all delighted that Shania has chosen to take part in the event and they look forward to a wonderful celebration. Shania seems to be on board with the excitement, “It is certain to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life," Shania writes in a statement on her web site. "I am proud to have been presented this unique opportunity and privilege and look forward to sharing the pride with my hometown and fellow Canadians, as we are all proud of our country's chance to host the upcoming winter games. I am grateful for this special gift of participation in carrying the flame that represents such an incredible spirit of sportsmanship and excellence and wish all the athletes of the 2010 Winter Olympics courage, strength and triumph during the Games."

No news yet if Shania has any plans to step into the recording studio in the near future, but her hometown sure is happy to have her back and plans to make the evening a celebration to remember.

Shania Twain Will Carry the Olympic Torch

Posted: October 5th, 2009 at 9:44 am  |  By: Alison Bonaguro

I am kind of ticked off at the Olympics executives right now. Chicago was clearly the best choice for the 2016 games and they blew it. But this Shania Twain thing might just change my mind. She's been chosen to carry the Olympic Torch through her hometown in Ontario on New Year's Day in January 2010. Twain says it's an "honour" to bear this torch and that she has "tremendous respect for the hard work, dedication and talent of the world's greatest athletes and will humbly carry and pass on the Olympic torch with a special pride for my country's Olympians." So between her guest judging spot on the upcoming season of American Idol, and now this torch thing, I'd say Twain is poised for a big ol' country comeback.

Shania's Torch Bearer Olympic Uniform

I went to HBC on Sunday (The Bay, or Hudson's Bay Company..a company older than Canada and a store Shania will have shopped at...a Canadian tradition)

Anyway, HBC is providint the uniforms for the Canadian athletes in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games. I bought a white 'torch relay' long sleeved t shirt. Apparently the official Torch Bearer Uniform is exclusive, so I don't think they will sell the jacket and pants, but they'll likely sell the red gloves and toque (hat)

The red gloves don't really coordinate with the white and turquoise colours of the uniform, but that is typical 'Bay' for you....duh!

^ ^ ^ It isn't Shania, it is just what Shania will be wearing. The 2010 Torch Bearer Uniform is exclusive, and that is the uniform. Red mits and all! It doesn't look very warm either. Water resistant, not water proof. Anyway, Shania will only run 300 metres...not very far at all. Still, I'm excited about it!

Thousands of Canadians set to carry Olympic torch when relay begins Friday

The Canadian Press

Greek actress Maria Nafpliotou, playing the role of the high priestess lights the Olympic flame in the temple of Hera in Ancient Olympia, Greece, Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009. (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jonathan Hayward)

VANCOUVER — Tom Keep has been jogging and walking wherever he goes in the small southern Manitoba community of Brandon where he lives, getting his blood going for his 300-metre stint with the Olympic flame in January.

When the flame lands in Victoria on Friday to begin its 45,000-kilometre Canadian relay, it will still be a few degrees above zero in Brandon.

But by the time Keep, 57, takes hold of the slender white Olympic torch in the new year, somewhere between Brandon and Regina, it will be a tad frostier.

"It could be anywhere on the frozen tundra -- I've seen it with the wind chill more than 50 below," Keep, who works with the city, said with a laugh.

"It's the same if it's 20 below or if it's 50 below, you still have to dress the same. If it's a matter of putting a balaclava on, we'll see how it goes."

Keep is one of 12,000 torchbearers who will carry the Olympic flame along its 106-day, 45,000-kilometre route across Canada, beginning in Victoria on Friday and ending in Vancouver for the opening ceremonies Feb. 12.

Relay organizers have boasted the route is the longest in-country relay in Olympic history, passing through more than 1,000 communities in every province and territory and making it as far north as Alert, Nunavut. Dozens of those communities will be holding events along the way.

Aside from the typical relay running, it will be pulled along the snow on a polar bear skin by a dog in Resolute Bay, Nunavut, and in Iqaluit it will travel on a traditional Inuit kayak.

There are several notable Canadians and celebrities carrying the flame, including hockey player Sidney Crosby and country music star Shania Twain.

But many more are everyday people who entered contests put on by relay sponsors Coca-Cola and RBC.

One of them is Alvin Richard of Moncton, N.B., who will be carrying the torch for the second time.

Richard was a torchbearer for the 1988 Calgary Olympics, when he submitted hundreds of entries into a contest for a spot on the route.

The 47-year-old nurse and artist has been a self-described "Olympic fanatic" since watching television coverage of the 1978 Montreal Summer Games when he was a teenager.

"It's like those defining moments in your life -- I watched it from noon until night," said Richard. "After that, I had the Olympic spirit inside of me and I knew it was following me all along my life."

Calling Richard an Olympic fanatic isn't an overstatement.

He named his only son after a Canadian skier who won a gold medal at the 1994 Games in Lillehammer, and teared up when he visited the Olympic Hall of Fame in Calgary.

Richard said his interest in the Olympics prompted him to start running, and he's since competed in more than 20 marathons and earlier this year hiked the 800-kilometre Camino Trail in northern Spain.

So a 300-metre jaunt should be no big deal.

"I ran one kilometre (during the 1988 relay), and at that time I thought it was going to be over in a second, but it lasted longer, it seemed to me that I ran farther than that," said Richard.

"Three-hundred metres -- I'm not going to train very hard because I want it to last as long as possible."

There will even be a few torchbearers from outside of Canada.

Steve Ford lives in Tahlequah, Okla., a small city about 100 kilometres southeast of Tulsa, and will be running with the torch in Comox, B.C., on Vancouver Island.

Ford, who during an interview asked for help pronouncing the town he'll be running in (it's co-mocks), landed a spot along the relay through a professional relationship with Olympic sponsor Nortel.

"It kind of hit home this past week. My uniform arrived, so this really is going to happen -- it's a chance of a lifetime," said Ford, 47, who boasts that, according to relay officials he's spoken with, he's the only person from Oklahoma carrying the torch.

"It's your national pride. I hope I'll be well-received being a non-Canadian there."

VICTORIA - The Olympic flame lands in Victoria this morning to begin the longest national Olympic torch relay in history.

A Canadian Forces plane bearing the Olympic flame will touch down on the tarmac at Victoria International Airport Friday morning.

The torch was passed Thursday in Athens to representatives of the Vancouver Olympic Committee for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The flame that has been described as one of the brightest beacons of humankind now begins its long journey across Canada.

“The torch has now been transferred to our nation's hands,” B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell said in a statement Thursday. “It is a flame that will burn boldly . . . as a fitting symbol of all that Canada has come to represent in the world - peace, brotherhood, enlightenment.”

From B.C., the Olympic torch will travel more than 45,000 kilometres across the nation, touch all three coasts, and be carried by more than 12,000 torchbearers.

After Victoria, the torch will be taken north through Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands before being flown to Whitehorse Yukon, then move through the Northwest Territories, northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

On Nov. 8, the 10th day of the relay, the torch will land at Canadian Forces Station Alert. At the tip of Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, the military outpost is the most northerly permanent human settlement on the planet.

The torch then heads to the East Coast before snaking westward across the country. After visiting more than 1,000 communities, the torch will enter Vancouver's B.C. Place Stadium Feb. 12 for the opening ceremony for the 2010 Games.

Among those slated to carry the torch are singer Shania Twain, hockey great Sidney Crosby, two-time National Basketball Association MVP Steve Nash and former Olympian Vicky Sunohara, who won a silver medal in 1998 and back-to-back golds in 2002 and 2006 with the national women's hockey team.

Olympic torch relay draws a crowd
MCT News Service
October 31, 009

VICTORIA, B.C. With the stunning Baroque parliament building as backdrop, a jubilant crowd flecked with maple-leaf red cheered Friday as a man and woman held aloft the Olympic flame in downtown Victoria.

The pair were athletes triathlete Simon Whitfield and speedskater Catriona Le May Doan, both gold-medal winners and they kicked off an epic torch relay across Canada and a 106-day countdown to the Feb. 12 Opening Ceremony in Vancouver.

Men in suits and children in official Olympic hats pressed against fences along Victoria's Inner Harbor, watching as the torch passed from hand to hand. The swell of Canadian pride could be seen in the tiny maple-leaf flags and heard in the whoops and applause as smiling runners sped past.

"I am ecstatic that my daughter got to see this," said Sidney Thompson, holding 4-year-old Lindsey high over his head. "Think about all the effort that went into it, and it's a fine, proud day to say, 'I'm a Canadian.'"

But the torch also galvanized organized protests and individual anxieties, like those of retired postal clerk Joan Dziadyk, who waited for the torch near the Victoria suburb of Esquimalt. She said she would cheer on the Canadian hockey team, but compared the Games to a new car that was more than taxpayers could afford.

The Games to be held in Vancouver and Whistler will cost at least $6 billion (Canadian), counting the infrastructure, which includes a straighter highway between the host cities.

"I think it's a great thing, but I'm sorry it's costing so much at this time," said Dziadyk, clutching a Canadian flag under her umbrella. "We're going to be paying for this for a long time, so people better enjoy it."

Behind schedule

The flame was late to its own party. It flew in to Victoria on Friday morning from Greece on a plane with Olympic officials and government leaders. Slowed by headwinds and a delay in Greece, the flame, kept in four small lanterns, touched down on the gray, wet tarmac one hour late.

After leaving Victoria this morning, the torch will dart like an overcaffeinated figure skater on a nearly 28,000-mile dance across Canada's vast terrain.

Next month, it will spend a few minutes in Alert, Nunavut, its five hearty permanent residents just 500 miles from the North Pole. It will ride in an Inuit kayak, on a bearskin dogsled, snow machine, float plane and in the hand of country-music star Shania Twain in her hometown of Timmins, Ontario.

In all, about 12,000 Canadians will carry the flame in a relay of 300-meter legs. Each will get to keep the 37-inch, 3-pound torch they carried, including Christy Aiken, a 19-year-old nursing student from Port Alberni who got a spot on the relay team by winning an essay contest sponsored by Coca-Cola.

"Today, she's thinking, 'I hope I don't drop the torch, and I have a lot of homework to make up,'" her father, Charles Aiken, said as he waited for her to run past.

Despite the money involved, "There's going to be a lot of good for this country and province coming out of this. Plus we'll be on the worldwide map, and people will know about Vancouver and British Columbia."

Victoria and the Olympic organizers prepared for protests on Friday hundreds of police lined the route and protesters did not disappoint. A strong anti-Olympic group, No2010, has sprung up in Vancouver, and a group on Facebook is organizing people to drop their pants and moon the torch as it passes.

'Zombie march'

On Friday, a raucous and colorful group of about 400 staged a Halloween-themed "zombie" march that bottled up rush-hour traffic in Victoria's tourist disrict.

Speakers objected to the massive spending while B.C. continues to struggle with homelessness and drug addiction. Government officials were blasted for siding with Olympic corporate sponsors in an issue about Olympic-themed advertising.

"It's just a colossal waste of money," Tamara Herman, 34, of Victoria. "This is billions in spending at a time when there's huge cutbacks to social services and schools. Homelessness is rising. Now is not the time to spend billions on a party."

Mike Vaillancourt, 29, is inclined to agree. He skipped work to protest along the torch relay route with a sign protesting Olympic spending. But he admits he is anticipating the hockey, and likes the torch design, a white, twisted tube he said looks like a marijuana joint.

"You see it like that, and the torch is something we can get behind," said Vaillancourt.

Timing key for torch

Run route released

Posted By CHELSEY ROMAIN The Daily Press

With just over a week left before the Olympic torch makes its way through the city, officials are taking steps to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Timmins Olympic Community Celebration committee chairman, Timmins Police Service Sgt. Al Richardson, announced yesterday the planned route for the torch when it reaches the city on New Year's Day.

Beginning at exactly 6:14 p.m., the first two runners will take the torch from the Tim Hortons in South Porcupine to Legion Dr., where it will be passed off and driven to the flags in Schumacher. The torch will then head down Father Costello Drive before turning back onto Hwy. 101 and onward to the Hollinger Park.

At the Algonquin Blvd. and Brunette Rd. intersection, Shania Twain will grab hold of the torch and run it up to the stage where she will light the cauldron at precisely 7 p.m.

"People will be able to view the show from anywhere because there will be large screens set up," Richardson said. "Shania will be saying a few words to her hometown crowd, but we have not asked her to perform.

"However, she is welcome to do whatever she likes."

Traffic will be disrupted in some areas throughout the day, and police are reminding the public that parking will be limited in the area around Hollinger Park.

Brunette Rd. from Algonquin Blvd. to the most Northern entrance into Food Basics will be closed beginning at 2 p.m. Intersecting roads along the route will also be closed as runners pass, but traffic in the eastern direction will continue.

While people can still enjoy the playground equipment at the park, entrance into the park's driveway will not be permitted beginning that morning to allow for set up.

"As you can imagine, an event of this magnitude on New Year's Day can present some unique security challenges," said Timmins police Deputy Chief Des Walsh. "We're encouraging everyone to carpool that day, as there will be limited parking."

Parking in the park's lot will be limited to emergency personnel and people with disabilities.

Businesses in the area are allowing for parking in their own lots, as well municipal parking lots will be available.

"All operational plans set so far are based on attendance of at least 6,000 at the celebration site," said Walsh. "If the weather is favourable, we expect more, and if it's rotten we can probably expect less."

With the stage being set up in the outfield facing the bleachers, Richardson said 10,000 can fit comfortably.

While a contingency site has been selected in case the event has to be moved indoors, he said the committee hopes it won't be needed.

"It would significantly reduce our numbers, go from maybe 7,000 people outside to 700 people inside," said Richardson. "Luckily as Northerners, we're prepared for bad weather and we fully anticipate lots of snow and cold temperatures.

"We'll probably forge ahead whatever the weather is."

The committee also announced the entertainment scheduled for the two-hour show. Committee entertainment manager Rob Knox said the community is allotted a certain percentage of performers to be from the city.

"I think this will be wonderful and powerful," said Knox. "We wanted to recognize the contribution of ethnicity to our city, we thought it would be wonderful to incorporate First Nation and French Canadians."

Local entertainment will include drumming from the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, the Timmins Police Pipes and Drums, the national anthem being sang by Walsh's own daughter Meaghan Walsh, ballet dancers from the Cathy McKeown Classical Dance Arts, Les Amis qui Dance and Chantal Delorme. Other forms of entertainment are being provided by VANOC as well as the major corporate sponsors RBC and Coca-Cola.

To date not all of the runners have been announced, but those names are expected to come soon.

All runners have the chance to purchase their torch. Richardson said Twain has agreed to purchase hers and donate it back to the city.

More details about the event will continue to be announced as the official Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch relay gets closer to Timmins.

Torch Run ready to go Friday

Don't even think about parking near the Hollinger Park

Dress warmly. Bring a camera. Park in the free parking lots downtown. And expect to have a good time Friday night.

That's about the best advice being offered by the city's Olympic Community Celebration Committee, which is putting the final touches on the New Year's Day Torch Run extravaganza at the Hollinger Park.

Along with the promise of a dazzling fireworks display. Residents should be able to witness hometown singing sensation Shania Twain carry the Olympic flame along the final leg of the local torch route followed by two hours of local entertainment.

"We haven't asked Shania to perform," said committee chair Timmins Police Const. Al Richardson. "But she is being given some time to speak to her hometown crowd. We don't anticipate that she'll sing. We don't have any preparation for music or anything for her to do that, but who knows," Richardson added with a grin.

The local run will begin at 6:14 Friday evening at the South Porcupine sign on Highway 101 East near the Tim Horton's. The run will proceed westbound for roughly 600 metres to Legion Drive. The flame will then be driven to the eastern limit of Schumacher at the flags park. The run will continue along Father Les Costello Drive and then westbound along Algonquin Boulevard toward Brunette Road.

At about 6:57 p.m. the flame will be lit on the torch held by Shania Twain. Twain will then proceed south of Brunette and east into the Hollinger Park, and she will carry the flame into the Fred Salvador Field. Once there, her torch will light a cauldron on the stage to kick off the local festivities.

There have been concerns voiced in Timmins in recent weeks that other well-known citizens and athletes were not invited to participate in the torch run along with Twain.

"RBC and Coke were the ones that chose the lion's share of the runners throughout Canada," Richardson explained at a media conference last week. "We had only one choice as a committee for our community, to represent the community and put our best foot forward."

He added that not all the runners in Timmins are from Timmins. He says the same situation exists in most communities where torch runs are being held.

The stage for the final run in and performers will be set up in the baseball area at Fred Salvador Field in the Hollinger Park. The stage is to be set up in the area of second base, facing the bleachers. Large screens on either side of the stage will carry televised images. The gates to Fred Salvador Field will open to the public at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Organizers say up to 1400 residents can sit in the bleachers section. Most spectators are expected to be on ground level where Coca Cola and RBC will be set up with interactive displays and booths.

Local businessman and performer Rob Knox, chairing the entertainment portion of the event, says the show will consist of "some very powerful and wonderful stuff" consisting of First Nations drumming and dancing, Timmins Police Pipes and Drums, a special version of O Canada performed by Meaghan Walsh and traditional French Canadian folk dances performed by Les amies qui danse.

There will even be a Winter Olympics dance performed by Cathy McKeown's Classical Dance ballet troupe. Well-known Timmins vocalist Chantal Delorme will also be performing. Knox says the community performances will be capped off with a nighttime fireworks display.

There will also be music and videos provided by the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).

"I think all around it's going to a really neat two hours for the community," he said.

As for the weather, there is a contingency plan is the weather turns bad, but details were not released last week."Luckily as Northerners, we are prepared for bad weather. We are fully anticipating lots of snow and cold temperatures," said Richardson

"I can tell you we do have a contingency site, an indoor contingency site. We're very much hoping we're not going to use it because it would significantly reduce our numbers.

"We are probably going to forge ahead whatever the weather is," said Richardson.

Environment Canada has indicated snow and minus 20 temperatures are likely for Friday.

Those who choose not to go to the Hollinger Park can still see the torch run, most likely, along the Highway 101 corridor (see the maps at right). The route will move at the speed of the slowest runner and will have a police and Olympic security escort.

"Actually the route was designed by VANOC. We had limited input. They designed it and did all through Google Earth®. We were presented with it and we had to work with it," Richardson added.

He added that as regulations from VANOC indicate, runners alongside or behind the official torch runners will be discouraged for safety reasons as well as security reasons. Also no one will be allowed to share the actual Olympic flame other than an official torch runner.

As for attending the Hollinger Park, Fred Salvador Field, Timmins Police Service Deputy Chief Des Walsh says don't expect to be able to drive up to the site. "We are encouraging everyone to carpool that day," said Walsh.

He added that since it is a statutory holiday, there will be free parking at all the city owned parking lots in the downtown area, especially those closest to the Hollinger Park.

Also because of the holiday, there will be no Timmins Transit service or Handi-Trans service on Friday.

Twain, torch travel similar roads
Posted By JOHN EMMS

In a few days Shania Twain will be participating in the Olympic torch relay -- an event that will eventually take more than 100 days and 45,000 kilometres to complete.

As sure as that Olympic torch has been carried through many communities in eastern Canada already, Twain's career has also -- in its own way -- travelled a long and winding road.

Think about it folks.

She is a long way from the Mattagami First Nation and a long way from singing at telethons and the Maple Leaf Hotel -- where Stompin' Tom made his mark.

She is also a long way from the Deerhurst musical revues and a long, long way from some early negative Nashville attitudes towards her initial musical endeavours.

For that fact alone, I dare anyone to say Twain did not work her way to the musical status she currently enjoys.

Not a lot of people would have hung in there. In fact, 90% of us would have quit long ago.

Maybe that's why I have always admired her drive, talent and ambition.

I've covered Twain from the first years of writing this column when I was running through a history of Timmins music.

But those early columns were not the first time I was aware of her drive and ambition.

For that we may have to go back to the early '80s.

If I was not playing a gig with a band I was singing at the Airport Hotel, or across the street at the Rocking Tap, or maybe seeing some cool Toronto band like Coney Hatch at the The Empire Hotel. You might have also seen me soaking in some "vibes" at J.P.'s Lounge at the Escapade Hotel.

At the time a lot of the musicians in our area were aware of each other's bands and musical efforts.

We played the same bars and we watched each other's sets.

Even though it was competition it was also fun.

I became aware of Twain's talent through the local musicians' grapevine.

I was writing a lot of songs at the time, and had even joined SOCAN years earlier.

There were only a few bands and musicians who were willing to perform their own songs.

Guy Martin (David Hartt) was one of them and that is a fact we shared then and do to this very day.

It was a small musical community so it was no surprise when I heard Dave was working with a female lead singer.

Being a lead vocalist myself, I had to check out their gigs.

Longshot was the name of the band and despite the fact I wanted to hear some original songs I was impressed by the band and the lead vocalist's ability to perform cover material from Journey, Pat Benatar and Toronto.

That was the first time I saw Twain on stage, but it would not be the last.

I still believe that her 2002 album "UP" is one of the finest pop albums ever recorded. A lot of the that album's big sound and eventual success was due to her ex-husband Mutt Lange.

Lange should be considered on a musical level with the greats, such as Phil Spector. He is a visionary producer, engineer and musician with the midas touch.

Still, it was a team effort. In fact, Twain's overall success has been a team effort. Make no mistake it was not a fluke.

It sometimes gets swept under the rug, but Twain was a musician early on. She knew chords on the guitar, she understood musical arrangements and she understood harmonies and different vocal keys and cues.

If you combine that with hard work and crucial timing you have in a nutshell what Twain's current status is today.

As fans know, Twain's musical output covers many genres including pop, new country and rock.

It is anticipated that she will release an album of new material in 2010.

That should mean a return to the celebrity circuit.

Martina McBride, Shania Twain Lead Country Into New Decade

The last time we headed into a new decade, it was the beginning of a completely new millennium, and it kicked off with a bang: The Judds reunited in Phoenix; Trisha Yearwood and Kenny Rogers performed for President Clinton in Washington, D.C.; Kenny Chesney opened for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill at the arena in Nashville; and Grand Ole Opry stars Marty Stuart and Connie Smith went to church in Mississippi.

As we enter 2010, country stars are once again a big part of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Martina McBride and Diamond Rio will be on TV; Shania Twain carries the torch for the Winter Olympics; Lady Antebellum and Tim McGraw will appear at college bowl games; and Garth Brooks, Rodney Atkins and the Eli Young Band will help transition into January on stage.

Here’s how some of country’s biggest stars will add to the turning of the calendar on Thursday and Friday:
• Martina McBride continues as host of GAC’s Top 50 Videos Of 2009. The countdown started on Monday, and the No. 1 video of the year will finally be revealed New Year’s Day. Check here for the complete schedule.

• Shania Twain carries the Olympic torch during the final segment of a New Year’s Day relay in Timmins, Ontario, with a two-hour celebration slated at the city’s Hollinger Park, The Timmins Times reports. The event is part of a broader torch relay leading up to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The games kick off Feb. 12.

• Garth Brooks begins his second weekend of shows at Wynn Las Vegas on New Year’s Day. Thanks to the casino’s anti-scalping policy, some previously purchased seats have opened up, The Las Vegas Sun reports. The venue will have a stand-by line each day.

• Not surprisingly, Vegas has numerous country shows on tap. Gary Allan and Merle Haggard play the area on the final night of ’09, according to Pollstar, while Phil Vassar visits nearby Henderson the first day of ’10.

• GAC’s Storme Warren will emcee the first-ever Bash On Broadway in downtown Nashville. Rodney Atkins is on the Dec. 31 bill along with blues guitarist Jonny Lang, singer-songwriter Marc Broussard and “Change The World” songwriter Tommy Sims.

• The Eli Young Band serves as grand marshal for the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade in Dallas, according to KDFW-TV. The prior evening, the band rings in the year with a performance at the Verizon Wireless Theater in Houston.

• EYB isn’t the only act playing Texas for the holiday. Jack Ingram appears in San Antonio Thursday and Corpus Christi Friday, Pollstar reports. Chris Young and Reckless Kelly have competing New Year’s Eve shows in Dallas; Cross Canadian Ragweed counts down to 2010 in Houston; and Austin has a pair of year-end concerts on tap — Joe Ely and Dale Watson at Antone’s while Robert Earl Keen and the Randy Rogers Band top the bill at the Austin Music Hall.

• Diamond Rio and Lee Greenwood are slated for Fox News’ “All American New Year’s Eve.”

• Tim McGraw will be on the field for the opening coin toss at the Outback Bowl on New Year’s Day, according to The St. Petersburg Times. He’ll also be on the sidelines during the game to help honor a group of Marines that will be recognized during halftime.

• Lady Antebellum sings “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day when the University of Cincinnati plays Florida.

Richie McDonald does double duty in Jacksonville for the holiday. He’s one of the grand marshals of the Gator Bowl Parade on New Year’s Eve, and he delivers the national anthem the next day when Florida State and West Virginia hook up in the game.

Riders In The Sky host the opening segment on the Grand Ole Opry New Year’s Day at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The lineup for evening includes Little Jimmy Dickens, Josh Thompson, John Conlee, Jean Shepard and Exile.

• Americana acts Old Crow Medicine Show and Chuck Mead warm up the Ryman with a New Year’s Eve performance. Others playing around the country include Wayne Han**** in Kansas City New Year’s Eve, Junior Brown in K.C. New Year’s Day, Billy Dean closing out the year in Tallahassee, and Randy Houser doing a New Year’s Eve gig in Kennesaw, Ga.

Torch fever growing

Thousands expected for New Year’s Day celebrations

Posted By Ron Grech, The Daily Press

acynthe Simard, marketing co-ordinator for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Torch Relay, holds an unlit torch, the kind that Timmins residents will see runners carrying when the flame arrives here New Year s Day. (RON GRECH The Daily Press)

Thousands are expected to witness what promises to be an historic event for Timmins as the Olympic flame makes its way through the city on Friday.

The event will culminate with Shania Twain lighting an Olympic cauldron for a community celebration being held in Hollinger Park.

There will be two hours of music, dance and cultural entertainment to follow, capped off by a fireworks display.

"This is a major event and along with major events comes road closures," Timmins Police Service Deputy Chief Des Walsh.

Traffic on Algonquin Blvd. at Spruce St. will be closed from 6:15 to all eastbound traffic for at least an hour to ensure the torch relay is not impeded.

Brunette from Algonquin to Watertower Rd. will be barricaded from 2 p.m. that day.

The driveway into the park will be closed as of 9 a.m. and access into the park will be restricted while organizers set up.

There will be no parking along Watertower Rd. because there is a fireworks launch being set up along the stretch of park parallel to that roadway.

The barricade on the west side of Brunette will be placed just north of the entrance to the Food Basics parking lot enabling access to that site.

While parking is available in that plaza, Walsh said people need to be conscious of the fact spaces are limited.

It's recommended residents avoid bringing their vehicles if possible or to car pool.

Walsh said there is also parking available in the old TeleTech lot and the municipal lot at Algonquin Blvd. and Spruce St.

Walsh said people can forget about camping overnight in the park to get a prime viewing spot. No overnight camping will be permitted, he said.

Jacynthe Simard, marketing co-ordinator for the Torch Relay, said the torch run will start that morning in Val d'Or, Que., wind through several communities, cross the Ontario border, make its way to Kirkland Lake, Matheson and Iroquois Falls.

Two runners will carry the flame through South End.

Simard said that portion of the run will begin precisely at 6:14 p.m. from the Tim Hortons in South Porcupine to Legion Dr.

From there, the flame will be transported in a miner's lamp by van to the flag park in Schumacher at 6:31 p.m. Simard said there will be five minutes allotted to unload and a light a torch and then the relay will resume on foot at 6:36 p.m.

The run will progress through Father Costello Dr. in Schumacher, towards the intersection of Algonquin Blvd and Brunette Rd.

The torch will then be passed off to Twain who will carry the flame and light the cauldron in Hollinger Park.

Simard said there two convoys of vehicles connected with the torch run.

The first is a primary convoy which arrives approximately five minutes ahead of the torch bearer. Its function is to drop off the next torch bearer.

That is followed by the core convoy which accompanies the runner carrying the flame.

Timmins Police Service Sgt. Alan Richardson, the Timmins Olympic Community Celebration committee chairman, said there will be viewing areas along one side of the barricades on Brunette Rd. and along one side of the driveway leading into the park for those keen on seeing the last runner.

There have been incidents in other communities where citizens and media have been pushed aside by security if they stepped into the path of the torch runners.

Richardson said onlookers will be fine as long as they stay on the sidewalk or behind the barricades.

Timmins Police Service is working jointly with the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to provide safety and security along the route.

Richardson said folding or lawn chairs will not be permitted. He said the grandstand can accommodate up to 1,000 people.

If anyone brings chairs, they will be stored inside the gate and people can pick up them when they leave, Richardson said.

Rob Knox, entertainment committee manager, said there are 80 local entertainers lined up to perform at the event including a large number of performers and Aboriginal youth groups connected with the Timmins Native Friendship Centre.

The two hours of music and dance will be capped off by a "spectacular fireworks show," said Knox.

Shania Twain's Running Torch on New Year's Day

December 31, 2009 08:55:05 GMT

The 'From This Moment On' singer is going to run Olympic Games torch at her hometown of Timmins, Ontario on January 1, 2010.

Shania Twain has returned home to Timmins, Ontario to take part in the town's Olympic Games torch run on New Year's Day, 2010. The country singer will participate in Friday's run, which will spark promotions for the upcoming Winter Olympics, February 10 in Vancouver, Canada.

Feeling sporty, Twain attended an ice hockey game with friends at the McIntyre Arena in her hometown on Tuesday night, December 29.

RE: Shania to carry Olympic torch through Timmins! - January 1 around 7pm ET

I'll be watching the torch relay. I went to the Torch Relay when it passed through Toronto, and I bought the red mittens and I got torch relay 'swag' - it is a fun experience. I can't wait to see Shania running with the torch!

No beefed-up security for Shania Twain's New Year's Day torch run: officials
(Canadian Press) – December 31, 2009

TIMMINS, Ont. — Olympic officials say they won't be boosting security when Canadian country music superstar Shania Twain carries the torch Friday in her hometown of Timmins, Ont.

Twain's run with the flame will come four days after a torchbearer in Guelph, Ont., fell to the ground in a confrontation between protesters and security personnel.

"The security levels we have now are appropriate. There's no pre-plans to beef up security, but that might change on a moment's notice, based on crowd size or crowd behaviour," said Bert Paquet, spokesman for the Vancouver 2010 Integrated Security Unit.

"We have that ability to increase that level pretty much instantly."

Torchbearer Courtney Hansen had just turned a corner with the torch in Guelph on Monday morning when she became entangled in the protest and fell.

The flame skidded against the ground but stayed lit. Guelph police have charged a 19-year-old woman with assault.

It's expected that Twain, a multiple Grammy-winner whose 1997 release "Come on Over" remains the best-selling country music album of all time, will carry the torch during a two-hour celebration in Timmins on New Year's Day.

There have been no reports in Timmins media of any expected protests.

Paquet said security officials "don't want to take away" the uniqueness of the torch run - both for Twain's fans and the singer herself - by having undue levels of security.

The security unit is working closely with local police, Paquet said, and if any "intelligence" shows there could be a problem then they'll act quickly.

"Our job is to protect the torchbearer and the flame. And we will do that."

Shania Twain prepares to carry Olympic torch

Shania Twain is in her hometown of Timmins, Ont., on Friday, preparing to carry the Olympic torch.

The country-pop singer famous for songs such as You're Still the One and That Don't Impress Me Much is part of a two-hour celebration in the northern Ontario town.

She was spotted Tuesday night at a local hockey game.

Twain grew up in Timmins and sang locally before launching her international career.

The Olympic torch encountered protests last month as it made its way through southern Ontario, including an incident in Guelph in which a torch-bearer fell after tangling with protesters. A 19-year-old woman has been charged in connection with that incident.

Olympic officials say they don't plan any extra security during Twain's run, which starts in the late afternoon.

There are no signs of any demonstrations planned and security officials say they "don't want to take away" the uniqueness of the torch run by having undue levels of security.

The torch begins its journey Friday in Val d'Or, Que., and passes through the towns of Kirkland Lake and Iroquois Falls, Ont., before arriving in Timmins.

Timmins is planning a celebration at Hollinger Park starting at 6 p.m. with a First Nations drum performance and singing by Meagan Walsh and Chantal Delorme.

The Olympic flame is scheduled to arrive at 7 p.m. in its last stop of the day.

Today is Torch Run day in Timmins

Updated news and information on today's torch run event

Dress warmly. Bring a camera. Park in the free parking lots downtown. And expect to have a good time in Timmins tonight.

The local run will begin at about 6:14 this evening at the South Porcupine sign on Highway 101 East near the Tim Horton's. The run will proceed westbound for roughly 600 metres to Legion Drive. The flame will then be driven to the eastern limit of Schumacher at the flags park. The run will continue along Father Les Costello Drive and then westbound along Algonquin Boulevard toward Brunette Road.

At about 6:57 p.m. the flame will be lit on the torch held by Shania Twain where she will be waiting on Algonquin Boulevard at Brunette Road.

The stage for the final run in and performers is being set up in the baseball area at Fred Salvador Field in the Hollinger Park. The stage is to be set up in the area behind second base, facing the bleachers. Large screens on either side of the stage will carry televised images. The gates to Fred Salvador Field will open to the public at 4:30 p.m. today.

As for the weather, there is a contingency plan if the weather turns bad, but details were not released last week. "Luckily as Northerners, we are prepared for bad weather.

Environment Canada has indicated snow and minus 20 temperatures are likely for this evening.

Those who choose not to go to the Hollinger Park can still see the torch run, most likely, along the Highway 101 corridor .

He added that for the comfort of the public, there will be washrooms, heated washrooms, at the Hollinger Park location. A medical facility will also be provided with a physician on hand along with eight nurses. Police also advise that no folding chairs will be allowed in the park. Those who inadvertently bring folding chairs can leave them at the front gate and pick them up afterwards.

Walsh added that since it is a statutory holiday, there will be free parking at all the city owned parking lots in the downtown area, especially those closest to the Hollinger Park.

Brunette Road will be closed down this afternoon, as will a brief eastbound section of Algonquin Boulevard this evening from Spruce Street through to Brunette Road.

Also because of the holiday, there will be no Timmins Transit service or Handi-Trans service on New Year's Day.

There will be 10 torch runners in the Timmins portion of the torch run. They are sponsored by Coca Cola and RBC.

Hopefully we'll be able to watch Shania's relay LIVE tonight around 7:00pm ET. Right now I'm only seeing a blank screen with a running counter/time down where it says Live. Is everyone else getting a blank screen too?
