When we think of iconic Canadian superstars, Shania Twain is likely one of the first people to come to mind. For decades the country pop singer and song writer has taken the world by storm, and in the process, become one of the best-selling musical artists of all time. While we celebrate Twain and her success as a symbol of national pride, life for this world-renowned celebrity has not always been so glamourous.

Like many children in Canada and around the world, the early years of Twain’s life were shrouded in poverty and isolation. Often lacking access to proper nutrition, clean clothing and parental support, Twain faced many challenges growing up in a disadvantaged family.

“As a child, I often went to school without having had breakfast, without bringing a lunch, and with no money to take part in pizza days. I missed many field trips because I wasn’t able to pay for them or get the authorization signature from my parents because they were not available or unable to provide the necessary permission.

Reflecting back, I realize now that my disadvantages created a lack of self-confidence and insecurity. This caused me to withdraw and be less social than I would have liked to be. In addition to feeling inferior, hunger too often caused a lack of energy, enthusiasm and motivation to interact with others and focus on my schoolwork” shares Twain in a heartfelt personal note.

Twain goes on to reveal other difficulties she experienced as a youth. She describes being forced to stay home at times to avoid the discomfort of trying to focus on school work on an empty stomach and missing out on experiences as she didn’t have the proper clothing or equipment to participate. However beyond the obvious challenges, Twain’s words tell a powerful story of a child in emotional crisis. Struggling with shame, insecurity and guilt, Twain exposes the unseen hardships that so many underprivileged children are forced to endure.

Unwilling to stand by and watch as other children suffer in silence, Twain created her own non-profit organization to address the needs of disadvantaged primary school children that are typically overlooked by social assistance programs. While these children may not be abused or neglected, they nevertheless have problems in their personal life that interfere with their social and educational experience. “I promised myself early on in my own childhood that someday I would help kids just like myself, cope with their disadvantages and prosper in spite of those challenges. Shania Kids Can Charity Foundation (SKC) is fulfilling that promise.”

Realizing this goal, SKC strives to even the playing field for underprivileged kids by applying proven initiatives where they can make the most difference — at school. Working with individual school boards, SKC creates a safe and discrete space onsite where kids can go to receive the essentials they need to succeed academically and in life. Lovingly referred to as

“SKC Clubhouses,” these designated areas are managed by professional staff who are dedicated to providing educational, nutritional, therapeutic and extra-curricular support. Each day, these kids are able to go to the clubhouse for fresh and nutritious food, help with their homework and any social/psychological support that may be needed. They can also receive field trip expenses, basic hygiene tools, school supplies and clothing items in confidence. Further help can be found at SKC’s after school program which includes other key support elements such as musical, writing and artistic development, practical life skills, vocational training and assistance from a therapist.

SKC is making a huge difference in many children’s lives. Children like Makayla, whose mom works two jobs to support her family. Makayla frequently utilizes the food in SKC and will also use the space to nap sometimes, as she has a tough time sleeping at home. She is an advocate to use SKC for academic work as well as a quiet space when feeling overwhelmed with work/life.

“We have witnessed first-hand an overall improvement in the general health and well-being of the children in the SKC program. These kids are achieving higher academic marks, improved social behavior and a better attitude towards school, a decrease in overall stress and in many cased elimination of hunger” said Twain. The results of the program are all measured through software designed for Shania Kids Can which conclusively indicate tremendous improvement overall in the areas of mental health, social behavior and physical health improvements.

By providing this basic support in the daily lives of primary school age children, not only do you see an immediate change in the education, social life, and self-esteem of students, the long-term implications are also impressive. “By supporting these children at the primary age by teaching them to become responsible, confident, proactive members of their school community, they will have a much better chance at personal success in the future. These children will grow to be adults who are in a better place and position to contribute positively to society” states Twain.

SKC has developed a strong partnership with the Dilawri Foundation over the past several years, which has allowed them to expand activities across Canada with programs running in Ontario, BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. EDMONTON — Country music superstar Shania Twain will be at Rogers Place for two evenings, but her impact will stay in the community for years to come.

During her May 9 and 10 stops at Rogers Place in Edmonton, 50/50 tickets will be sold in support of the Shania Kids Can Foundation, an organization supporting underprivileged elementary students with support, training, fresh food and a safe place in the Shania Club House.

Sandy MacNevin, managing director of the Shania Kids Can Foundation, said in an interview on Wednesday that money raised will stay in the community.

“We’re hoping to keep the funds in Edmonton proper and open an SKC clubhouse in the Edmonton area in the coming year,” MacNevin said.

The Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation will split proceeds of the 50/50 with the SKC.

The SKC Foundation provides school boards with three years of funding, while the program leader and school community raise funds to provide sustainability in the long term.

As an example of the support they offer, last week the SKC Foundation bought two kids glasses, MacNevin said.

The cost of the program is anywhere from $50,000 to $75,000 per year.

Tickets are on sale for an October concert that will raise money for a Shania Kids Can Clubhouse at Edith Cavell Public School.

The Country Hoedown on Oct. 13 features an acoustic performance by Niagara Falls singer-song writer Tim Hicks. Tickets are $55 for the concert, organized by The Rotary Club of St. Catharines South, at Club Roma.

Shania Kids Can is a program designed by Canadian country vocalist and children's advocate Shania Twain. It is designed for elementary school children who face difficulties in their lives. The program offers academic, social and emotional support and provides food stability by offering nutritious meals and snacks to ensure no child is hungry at school.

It also provides support and stability by professionals in one-on-one and group activities in the Shania Kids Can Clubhouse.

A clubhouse is to set open in Edith Cavell school in September 2019. Organizers say Twain will attend the opening.

Twain’s residency in Las Vegas provides funding opportunities for Brampton’s Sir Winston Churchill Public School

Shania Twain Kids Club members from Sir Winston Churchill Public School in Brampton got a surprise on
Wednesday when a tractor trailer containing Shania's custom made horse shaped motorcycle arrived at
the school. At the bike inside the trailer, are in front, Jacob, Deanna, and Robert. On the bike is Kaylee,
and at the back are Akeisha, Monique, Never, and Tristan.

Students at the Shania Twain Kids Can Clubhouse at Brampton’s Sir Winston Churchill Public School, got to partake in an important part of their latest fundraising program and contest.

On Wednesday, Sept. 25 the students waited to see a personalized motorcycle that was being hauled in a tractor trailer.

The bike, which the students posed with, will be auctioned off, along with a pair of tickets to the opening night of Twain’s new residency in Vegas.

The trailer stopped at Sir Winston Churchill on its way to Las Vegas.

The funds from the contest will go back to the Shania Kids Can, a non-profit foundation providing programs to elementary school children through the Shania Kids Clubhouse.

There are five Shania Kids Clubhouses across the country.

The contest also includes accommodation and airfare.

The clubhouse provides the children at Sir Winston Churchill with important programs like psychological support, vocational training and healthy food options.

After the bike visited Sir Winston Churchill, it continued on its journey in a tractor trailer to Las Vegas.

Twain’s residency “Let’s Go!” starts on Dec. 6.

The SKC fundraiser runs from Oct. 15 to Nov. 21.

With help from students at the SKC Clubhouse at Sir Winston Churchill Public School, in Brampton, Ontario, Shania’s Twain’s non-profit foundation, www.Shaniakidscan.com (SKC), announces the launch of an exciting fundraising initiative that will see a grand prize winner drive away with a motorcycle donated by Shania Twain; also up for grabs is an opportunity to see and meet the country music icon as she launches ‘Let’s Go!’ The Las Vegas residency in December.

An eye-catching tractor trailer carrying the motorcycle stopped by the Brampton SKC Clubhouse, on route to Las Vegas, in order to raise awareness of this unique and exciting fundraising campaign. The motorcycle was featured in Twain’s last Las Vegas live show. All proceeds raised will support SKC Clubhouses in Brampton, Las Vegas, and other locations across North America.

The ‘ Shania Kids Can & Count’s Kustoms Sweepstakes’ on IfOnly.com/Shania will run from October 15 – November 21, 2019 ; in addition to winning a motorcycle, the grand prize also includes: Roundtrip airfare for two to Las Vegas; hotel accommodations at Planet Hollywood; tickets to the opening night of Shania Twain’s ‘Let’s Go!’ show, plus a meet and greet with Shania. The winner will also visit Shania at one of her ‘Let’s Go!” Las Vegas rehearsals and be treated to a private tour of Count’s Kustoms motorcycle shop and museum.
