"Why Not?" On Oprah Winfrey Network - Premieres May 8 (U.S.) May 27 (Canada)

'Why Not? with Shania Twain' docu-series to debut May 27 on OWN in Canada

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network says it will debut "Why Not? with Shania Twain" in the U.S. on May 8.

And Corus Entertainment says the series is scheduled to premiere on OWN in Canada on May 27.

OWN says the show follows the superstar singer as she "sets out on a tour of healing, sharing and rediscovering her voice" after travails in her personal life and career.

Her journey includes a trip to her birthplace of Timmins, Ont., with her sister, Carrie Ann, and a travelling adventure with her bandmates and closest confidants.

Along the way, she meets vocal doctors, coaches and people who've experienced hardships similar to the ones Twain has gone through.

Cameras also capture Twain in intimate one-on-one conversations with experts in the music industry, including Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie and David Foster.

"This journey is about learning — learning about myself, growing, coming to terms with a lot of things," Twain says in new a sneak peak video on the OWN website.

"I have lost my ability to express myself and my ability to sing. For some reason, I'm not comfortable singing in front of people anymore."

Twain also confesses in the video that the pressures of her career got to her and made her lose her confidence at a time when her marriage to her ex, Robert (Mutt) Lange, was crumbling.

"I was really getting quite obsessive about my own pain, my struggle and I just had to snap out of it."

Shania Twain's TV debut set for May 8
By Kate McLaren, The Timmins Daily Press

After years out of the spotlight, Timmins' sweetheart is set to appear on the small screen this May.

Her six-episode docu-series Why Not? with Shania Twain, taped partially in Timmins, will feature a personal look into the country star's life, including the time period of her marital breakdown  and recent engagement.

A recently released preview features Twain as she explains the reasons for her absence in the music industry, and embarks on a cross-country adventure, meeting vocal coaches and doctors who help strengthen her voice.

The short  teaser also shows Twain as she listens to stories from others who have persevered through loss and trying times.

Timmins Shania Twain Centre manager Tracy Hautanen said when the show premieres on May 8, many Timmins residents will likely be glued to their TV sets.

"Absolutely, I'll be watching. People are really getting excited about this show. The fans who post on the message boards have been anticipating this for a long time."

She added while Twain spent time in Timmins filming the show, she's looking forward to seeing what footage made the final cut.

"Shania's always very excited to come home and to showcase her hometown to the world," Hautanen said.

"Even her making a trip here generates more publicity for the city than we could ever pay for."

The show promises to be exciting, even for people who are not fans of country music or Shania herself, said the centre manager.

"I would hope that the interest from the community is high. Timmins is showcased on an international level so I'm hoping everyone will tune in."

Hautanen explained Shania being in the spotlight means only good things for the Timmins centre.

"Whenever Shania's in the news, or talks about Timmins, visits and interest in the Shania Twain Centre go way up.

"The timing's perfect for her show and book to be coming out, because of the fact that spring is just the beginning of our tourism season here."

For fans, a trip through the Shania Twain Centre provides a deep look into the star's journey to fame.

"When you visit here, you leave with a greater appreciation of the path she's taken, and how she's gotten to where she is today.

"People visiting the centre will also see just how much she's given back to her fans."

When asked about her contributions to the local centre, Hautanen said Twain always credits her devoted followers.

"She says she wants her fans to see her awards, and all her accolades, because they're the reason she has all of that stuff."

Why Not? with Shania Twain premiers May 8 on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network. A teaser is available at www.oprah.com, or by searching the show's title on YouTube.

Along with the TV show, Twain will also appear at the March 27 Juno awards, where she will be inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame.

The release of Twain's autobiography, From this Moment On is set for May 3.

Shania's reality
By Dan Brown

In case you hadn’t heard, new-country singer Shania Twain is going to have a reality show on Oprah’s new network.

Am I the only one who finds this career move a bit odd?

Isn’t a reality show what you do on your way down the ladder of fame? Aren’t reality shows for people like Whitney Houston, who don’t have any other options?

Presumably Twain could still make records and tour, if she wanted. So why do a reality show? Is she really that hard up for money/exposure?

Here’s the QMI Agency copy from April 6:

May 13 is the date Canadians will get Shania Twain's answer to the question, "Why not?"

That's when Twain's new six-part reality-documentary series Why Not? with Shania Twain debuts on the Canadian version of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Twain's show debuts five days earlier on OWN in the United States.

"Canada has always been my home and a source for inspiration," Twain said in a media release. “I am thrilled to share my story with Canadian audiences and honoured to have this chapter of my life on OWN."

The series focuses on the country music star as she embarks on a journey to rediscover her personal and musical strength following the controversial breakup of her marriage.

Twain also has intimate one-on-one conversations with music-industry legends such as Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie and David Foster, who provide guidance and inspiration as Twain seeks to reclaim her voice.

The debut of Why Not? with Shania Twain comes mere days after the scheduled release of Twain's memoir, From This Moment On.

Here is an "interview" Shania supposedly did with a Mexican tabloid.

Shania Twain, a mere mortal

SHANIA TWAIN, who will star in a television program from Oprah Winfrey, has released only four studio albums.

Toronto, Canada
Agency Reform

Famous, successful, wealthy, beautiful, talented ... are some of the adjectives that envelop Shania Twain when he presumed to be one of the most popular Canadian artists worldwide, and as every human being has its setbacks and contradictions, such as those shown on the program released on 8 May on OWN, the Oprah Winfrey television channel.

"The media made me perfect and that reputation is far from reality, I am very obsessive with the order, I have good luck for the games and one of my great frustrations is that I was not fencer or sailor ... I wanted to do, "Twain said in an interview.

"Why Not? with Shania Twain," was an idea of the same singer of "Man! I Feel Like A Woman" which later became a demo that she took her to see if Winfrey gave approval to undertake it.

"Not a reality show, I clarify, I would like to promote as well. It will be a documentary. The reality show fix it, so make up, make you look very well studied, here I show it more real, more direct, without much editing .

"People will see the Shania is not a princess, but a woman, a housewife ... will my reflections on what was my marriage and what is my new relationship, my new life. I went through a brief period singleness and voila! I'm a lady again. It is my personal life and my professional life exposed in a subtle way, "says the singer of 45 years.

And if that were not enough, on May 3 will publish her first autobiography, From this Moment On, in which she narrates from his childhood until she has lived in recent months.

After 14 years of marriage to music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the country star was separated from him in June last year.  In January, she married the Swiss executive Frederic Thiebaud, who lives in Vernon since.

Rumors said that Twain's husband left her life when she found out he had cheated with her best friend, Marie-Anne, who is, indeed, the former wife of Thiebaud.

"I'm enjoying a new phase of my life, I learned to value more as a woman, not to depend on. In any event, I learned much about patience and see me as an individual with values and very solid approach," she says.

With radio hits like "You're Still the One" and "Up!", Twain has released only four studio albums, and from the Greatest Hits came out in 2004 has not made any other material. Now stands ready for her return.

"I'm writing a lot, I'm working with two producers, we have about five or six songs ready. If it took me a long time why rush now? I can not say who I'm working because I have a contract ... the fact is that through these songs will be periods of light and shadow that I lived in recent years," she adds.

Shania Twain, who has won five Grammy awards, has more than 76 million albums sold worldwide and is next to Celine Dion Canada's most international demand, in addition to Nielsen Soundscan cataloged in position 10 of the artists more sellers of the current era.

Really not sure where to ask this, so I apologize if its the wrong spot. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the show will eventually be available through Itunes? I have not seen any info on this and the network is not even listed on Itunes, so I tend to doubt that it will be. I just wanted to know if any one knew of any info that I was not aware of. Thanks.

Most of the shows on OWN are available to watch online (www.oprah.com/own) so I'm sure "Why Not?" will be too.

A new album and tour this Spring? no

Shania Twain's Reality Show "Why Not?" Premieres May 8 on the OWN Network.

April 24, 2011 04:55 PM EDT
Shania Twain, country/pop hitmaking sensation, returns to the public eye this spring with a new autobiography ("From This Moment On", in stores May 3rd), a new album and tour, and her own television reality series titled "Why Not?", kicking off its season on Oprah Winfrey's OWN Network on May 8, 11 pm.

When you are the top-selling female country music artist in history, it tends to become front page news when your 14-year marriage to a world famous record producer comes to an abrupt halt. Shania Twain and Mutt Lange seemed to be perfectly happy, staying away from the media in their Switzerland chateau, when startling news headlines announced Lange's new relationship with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, Shania's personal friend and secretary.

"Why Not?" shows Shania on her personal journey to self-discovery, working through grief, newfound happiness in a new marriage (intriguingly enough to Frédéric Thiébaud; Marie-Anne's ex-husband) and finding her voice again after the tumultuous past few years of her heavily publicized personal life.

Review | Why Not? With Shania Twain

Us Magazine
Wednesday April, 27, 2011

1303834982_twain-290.jpg

Air Date: Sunday 5/8

Us Rating: ** (out of 5 stars)

Wracked by fame's pressures, Shania Twain quit performing in 2004. In this reality trek, she tries to confront her demons (including her 2008 divorce, when her husband left her for her BFF) and inspire others. For starters, she discusses her parents' untimely deaths, then meets siblings who recently lost their own moms and dads. Twain's heart is in the right place, but viewers might ask, Why not just a special? As a series, her trail of tears is more exhausting than uplifting. (OWN, 11 P.M.)

OFFSTAGE: Shaniatherapy? Why Not?

Sure, Shania Twain is a superstar. But she's also a something of a super survivor -- of domestic violence, extreme poverty, the tragic death of her parents and the collapse of her marriage. At 44, her life has gone through more crisis than most people will face in a lifetime. And yet, Twain has come out on the other side and wants to find ways to help others. So this Shaniatherapy (I made up that description) she's offering during her new TV series, Why Not? With Shania Twain, seems to be a very solid way to heal. After opening up about her own troubles and struggles, with shocking details about her childhood in Ontario, and playing some music in a bluegrass song circle, Twain heads out to visit families who have faced the same tragedies she has faced. In the first episode, which airs May 8 on OWN, she brings dinner and a shoulder to cry on to a young family who lost both their parents. What I see when I watch this show, beyond the therapy and the revelations, is that Twain is just like the rest of us. She's every bit as fragile as she is strong. She cries as much as she laughs. She has an ugly past that is kind of her broken road to a shiny future. She's normal. Except, you know, she has a voice like an angel. And you can hear a little bit of that when she starts rehearsing a new song, "Today (Is Your Day)," and when she admits, "I cannot live without singing."

Shania Twain asks ‘Why Not?’
By BILL HARRIS, QMI Agency

Shania Twain is a woman of extremes.

She rose from poverty in Northern Ontario to become the best-selling female artist in country music history.

Then Twain essentially removed herself from public life, moving to Europe and kind of hiding out.

But now Twain is turning the tables again, going from her self-imposed exile to the exposure of her six-part documentary-reality series Why Not? with Shania Twain. It makes its north-of-the-border debut on the Canadian version of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) on Friday, May 13.

In Why Not?, Twain is arrestingly forthcoming not only about the breakup of her marriage to producer Mutt Lange (he was cheating with Twain's best friend), but also about Twain's fear of performance that apparently developed over the past half-decade.

Starting at her childhood home in Timmins, Twain revisits the painful memories of her adolescence, alongside her sister, Carrie Ann. In subsequent episodes of Why Not?, Twain embarks upon a cross-country adventure to get her career and mind-set back on the proper parallel tracks.

In 2005 there was a CBC biopic about Twain titled A Life in Eight Albums (Shenae Grimes, currently of 90210, played the "middle Shania," from ages 13 to 16). Twain had nothing to do with the making of A Life in Eight Albums, but we thought of that dramatization while watching the first episode of Why Not?, as it was like seeing the real-life version of the biopic.

It's likely the details of Twain's sad upbringing, in which she raised three younger siblings after her mom and step-dad died in a car accident, are better known to Canadians than to Twain's fans around the globe. Still, it's chilling to hear Twain and her sister talk about those dark days.

One of the most powerful segments in the first episode of Why Not? comes when Twain and her sister visit a family that recently went through the same thing, with the loss of both parents. On the surface that might sound borderline exploitative, but it doesn't come across that way.

Why Not? has the Oprah brand stamped upon it, as the main narrative focuses on a struggle through adversity. With someone like Shania Twain, though, it's a fine line to walk.

Twain's initial rise to fame against long odds is inspirational. No one can take issue with that.

However, with regard to the marriage breakup and the stage fright, is there a danger Twain could be perceived as a bit whiny?

Lots of marriages break up amid humiliating circumstances, but usually the women in those breakups aren't among the richest and most beautiful people in the world, as Twain obviously is.

And even if Twain never sang another note, she still has 30 hit songs to her credit, which is about 30 more than most musicians get.

To be fair, the first episode of Why Not? with Shania Twain doesn't come across as whiny. But it deals mostly with her younger days.

Remember, this is the Oprah Winfrey Network. The goal is to be inspirational.

Why Not? doesn't want to get caught in be-Twain.

Why Not? With Shania Twain: TV Review

Shania Twain
OWN

The Bottom Line

A long-winded, emotionally draining therapy session, "Why Not? With Shania Twain" solves the mystery as to why the singer stopped performing and recording, but it won't likely assure her fans that a successful comeback is in the wings.

Premiere

11 p.m. EDT Sunday, May 8

Regular time slot

10 p.m. EDT

Executive producer

Gary Rosenthal

The show, which airs on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, solves the mystery as to why the singer stopped performing and recording, but it won't likely assure her fans that a successful comeback is in the wings.

Question: Why has Shania Twain, that spunky crossover country-pop minx who sold more records than any female artist in history, stopped singing? Well, pull up a chair. Better yet, lie down on a comfortable couch, because OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network has a rather exhaustive answer in store for you.

Executive producer Gary Rosenthal (The Judds, Ruby) brings the world up to date on the vanishing star with Why Not? With Shania Twain, a new weekly reality show/therapy session that seems specifically tailored to appeal to the Oprah demographic.

In a nutshell, with her career in full bloom, Twain's former producer, co-writer and husband of 14 years, Robert "Mutt" Lange, abruptly announced he was leaving his wife. Lange had been having an affair with Marie-Anne Theibaud, Twain's friend and former secretary. After being hit with this succession of sucker punches, Twain discovers she can no longer bring herself to sing for her adoring fans, let alone write a new album full of hits.

"The shock of the betrayal in my personal life brought on the realization that I have lost my ability to express myself, and my ability to sing," Twain says to the camera in the series premiere. "I've lost it. I just can't express myself."

Fortunately, reality television is here to help, and Twain does what any woman in her situation would do: she boards a tour bus with a film crew and sets out to conquer her demons in a very public way.

Accompanied by her younger sister, Carrie Anne Brown, and largely filmed by her new husband, Fred Thiebaud (yes, the guy who was married to Marie-Anne before the messy wife swap went down), the result is a sometimes compelling, sometimes turgid program that feels equal parts emotional rescue and public relations coup.

The magical misery tour hits a few stops already chronicled in VH1's Behind the Music, such as the home where the Twain family lived through spousal abuse and rough economic times and where Shania began singing to please her depressive mother.

We also see the less shabby digs where the Twains lived in shortly before their parents were killed in car crash, forcing Shania to postpone her career to take care of her siblings, and take a trip to the graveyard where the couple is buried. That's all well and fine, but when the bus then makes a stop at the home of a young family of brothers and sisters who have also just lost their parents to cancer and a car crash so that Shania can impart words of wisdom, the show runs off the Dr. Phil rails.

"So I'm getting out on the road meeting people, finding things in common with others," Twain explains. "I want to meet people that have experienced similar things to me and know what we've been through."

Thrusting cameras, microphones and Shania Twain in the faces of suffering strangers doesn't seem like the best way to help either this grieving family or our befuddled star.

Moreover, the reality show artifice makes us question what's keeping Twain from getting back into the music business. After all, since Lange left her high 'n' dry, she has appeared as a guest judge and mentor on American Idol, and was also rumored to be up for the empty slot now occupied by Jennifer Lopez (in what has been another singer's brilliant comeback maneuver), so whatever this problem is it isn't one of stage fright.

"I really can't complain," Twain says early on in the premiere of Why Not? "I've got a beautiful man. I have everything I could ever want in life, why am I so unhappy?"

It's a good question, and one that will engage Twain's fans for a limited amount of time. Even after the first hour, however, you wonder whether her new husband shouldn't put down the camera and direct the bus driver to the office of a grief counselor to try and figure that one out.

Oprah Winfrey Network turns to Shania Twain

By ROB OWEN, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Just as it takes a television series several episodes -- heck, sometimes even a full season -- to find its creative footing, so it is with TV networks.

NBC lost its way years ago and continues to scrape along the bottom of the ratings barrel; ABC is also in fairly dire straits. Even if they squandered it over time, at least those networks had a profile and an established brand to begin with.

You could argue that OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network has a brand -- Oprah! -- but she's more mascot than brand despite a lot of talk about "living your best life." So far, viewers remain unconvinced. Last month, Deadline.com reported that ratings for OWN among advertiser-coveted viewers ages 25-54 were down during the first quarter almost 4 percent year-to-year compared to Discovery Health, the channel OWN replaced.

Last month, Winfrey acknowledged the rocky road OWN has had since its January launch.

"We're all about raising this child, and it does indeed take a village," Winfrey told ad buyers at Discovery Networks' upfront presentation. "We are all learning more and more about the viewers."

Many viewer complaints about OWN have been related to an abundance of reruns and lack of fresh programming. The channel started to rectify that issue last month with the addition of "Kidnapped by the Kids" (children take their workaholic parents away from their jobs), "Addicted to Food" (a reality series set at a treatment center) and "The Judds" (docu-series that follows Naomi and Wynonna Judd on their first concert tour in 10 years).

Ratings began to perk up a bit with "Addicted to Food" growing its audience by 55 percent in the key demo year-to- year.

OWN is preparing a reality series starring Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, and a daily talk show hosted by Rosie O'Donnell that will begin in September.

This coming week, OWN introduces a new series and a special. The series is a dull celeb-reality comeback story, but the special covers a less familiar topic.

"Why Not? With Shania Twain"

Once a top musical act, Canadian singer Shania Twain struggles to regain her ability to perform in front of an audience following the dissolution of her marriage. Sunday's premiere episode (11 p.m. EDT) reveals her tabloid-ready personal life: Twain's husband cheated on her with a female friend -- and now Twain is engaged to that friend's ex-husband! Clearly this show does not fall into the "celebrities, they're just like us" genre, even though it seems like it wants to be.

"Sometimes I wish for a smaller life," Twain says in the second episode of the series just before a visit to The Shania Twain Centre that collects memorabilia from her career. "My life is always too big for me. It's been too big for me for a very, very, long time."

Yes, those are the world's tiniest violins you hear playing.

The first two episodes offer biographical sketches of Twain, who grew up with an abusive stepfather and lost her mother and stepfather in a car accident while her siblings were still underage. Twain's sister, Carrie, is a grounding presence on "Why not?"

But viewers may wonder, "Why?" If Twain is coming back from a rough patch in her life, why is it necessary to do that in front of reality-show cameras?

After five tumultuous years behind the legendary news desk, Katie Couric said she would be leaving her high-profile job as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" in June when her contract ends.

Here's the big problem with Oprah Winfrey's OWN cable network: There's still too much Oprah to go around.

The talk show queen has seen ratings build for her syndicated show as fans continue to line up for the last dose of Winfrey's full-throated magic before the May 25 finale.

But viewership for OWN has headed in the other direction, despite a much-hyped Jan. 1 debut that drew an average of 1 million viewers in its first week.

The week of April 18, OWN drew an average of 127,000 viewers across its broadcast day, with 52,000 viewers among women ages 25 to 54. In prime-time hours during the same week, the average jumped to 216,000, with 78,000 in her core audience of women ages 25 to 54. In comparison, an average 6.3 million watched the syndicated Oprah show each day that week.

My theory: Fans are still lining up for the familiar show they know, not yet ready to spend much time with a cable channel they don't.

Clearly, it's time for Winfrey to reboot OWN.

A little of that starts Sunday, with the 11 p.m. debut of Shania Twain's Why Not?, an unscripted series supposedly detailing the onetime country-pop star's struggle to overcome crippling stage fright and return to performing.

The dramatic backdrop: Twain is also recovering from a painfully public scandal where her producer and husband Robert "Mutt" Lange left her and then revealed he was having an affair with her best friend. (She, naturally, began dating the best friend's now ex-husband. They married Jan. 1.)

Two days after Twain's debut, at 9 p.m. Tuesday, OWN unveils Becoming Chaz, a surprisingly intimate documentary about Chastity Bono's decision to get a sex change and begin living as a man even as her rock star mom (and gay icon) Cher struggled to understand and accept her choices.

After the film, Rosie O'Donnell, whose OWN talk show debuts this fall, will host a discussion of the issues at 10:30 p.m.

As someone who has seen most of the shows already, I can say there's lot of hit and miss in OWN; something we're not used to seeing from the Queen of All Media.OWN'S HITS AND MISSES

Here's a little blueprint for what's working and not:

Working

Becoming Chaz: This documentary has two things you rarely see in so-called reality TV: an unsparing look at the subject's worst moments, and an intimacy that leaves few corners of the experience unexplored. More shows like this will make OWN a destination for insightful, honest programming about gender, race and sex.

Oprah's tweets: Winfrey and her top staffers have tried to build interest in the network's best-performing show, Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, by posting messages on Twitter throughout the show. For fans who want nothing more than to bask in her presence, this is the next best thing to hanging with O during a screening.

NOT working

The Judds and Shania Twain: Nobody feels sorry for multimillionaire celebrities stuck on the crazy train. Watching clips of Twain singing before thousands of fans, only to freak out rehearsing in an empty hall, just makes you wonder whether she's a bit too pampered and precious.

Ditto with Kentucky natives Naomi and Wynonna Judd, whose off-the-hook neuroses could fill a couple of doctoral dissertations (their unscripted show about trying to organize a reunion tour airs at 10 p.m. Sundays). Both shows wear out their welcomes quickly, leaving you exasperated with the subjects instead of sympathetic.

OWN's new stars: None of the stars Winfrey developed in her show's heyday have new series on the channel. So figures like organizational expert Peter Walsh, sex therapist Laura Berman, cook Cristina Ferrare and ever-present pal Gayle King aren't getting traction. Time to brainstorm some way to shoehorn new appearances by Dr. Phil, Suze Orman and Dr. Oz before fans lose patience.

'Why Not? With
Shania Twain,' no Oprah

The singer's story, and her pain, are truly compelling

May 6, 2011

Why_Not_With_Shania_Twain.jpg

We’re all Oprah now.

Even Shania Twain, an extraordinarily beautiful and successful woman, feels compelled to divulge her sorrows and self-doubts on television and to share with us viewers her “journey” of attempted recovery.

That journey is the subject of the series “Why Not? With Shania Twain,” premiering this Sunday, May 8, on Oprah’s network, OWN. We follow Twain, her sister, Carrie, and two longtime musician friends as she retraces her life story while talking with therapists and with people who have suffered similar hardships.

Though the stories of Twain’s youthful poverty, the early deaths of her parents and the tumultuous breakup of her marriage have been told before, when Twain recounts them again on the show, with family photos and videos, it’s compelling viewing. Her openness is truly startling.

But Twain’s discussions with fellow sufferers, paradoxically, seem more self-centered, as if she were only interested in their stories insofar as they relate to or reflect hers. The segments sometimes come across like an audition reel to be the next Oprah.

The three episodes that the network made available for review generally follow Twain’s story chronologically. In the premiere, she visits her childhood home, a cramped space where, she says, she, her sister and two younger brothers often cowered in fear as their stepfather beat their mother.

Money was scarce. Twain remembers pretending not to be hungry or cold. She eventually reaches the conclusion that her habit of suppressing her emotions has led her to lose some of her singing ability. She’s now afraid to perform in front of a large audience and hasn’t done so in five years.

Just when her parents were becoming financially stable and the violence was ending, they both died in a car accident. Twain, who had already started performing, supported the family by working in a Vegas-style revue at a nearby resort hotel.

In a rather jarring transition, Twain visits a family of young people whose parents also died when they were young. Both she and the family members say they appreciated talking to someone who has been through the same experience, but the segment isn’t that enlightening for us viewers.

In all three episodes, Twain keeps returning to her freshest trauma: In 2008, her longtime husband, producer and songwriting partner, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, left her for the woman who had been the caretaker of their home in Switzerland, Marie-Anne Thiebaud. Twain says she considered her a friend and had even confided her marital problems to her.

Twain subsequently fell in love with and married Thiebaud’s husband, Frédéric, in 2010. Fred, as Twain calls him, does much of the camera work on the series and is often heard telling her how beautiful she is from off screen.

Though Twain says she thinks people should “stand on their own two feet,” in the second and third episodes, she meets with a therapist named Gordon Livingston. He tells her that she needs to allow herself to experience the loss of her husband fully. When she continues to rant about Marie-Anne, whom she calls “the traitor,” while protesting that her ex was “a very kind man” who wouldn’t have had the affair “deliberately,” Livingston points out that she’s not thinking rationally.

Later, Twain meets with a marriage therapist who had once betrayed her own best friend in a similar way. As Twain questions the therapist, we start to fear for the woman’s safety. But it’s fascinating to see Twain’s raw anger reach the surface and subside.

A segment with another woman whose husband left her for her best friend is less intriguing. Twain decides to take her skydiving, which is the sort of thing reality-TV producers do when they’ve run out of ideas.

Anyone who watches the show will be caught up in Twain’s process of self-examination and self-exposure. The question of whether she will literally regain her voice makes for an absorbing story line, even if it’s unclear whether it will be resolved.

But the segments in which Twain tries to share others’ pain mainly remind us of all the people who have previously attempted to be Oprah and failed.

A Country Star in Search of Her Voice

How many people must hurt So that Shania Twain may heal?

That's the question raised by “Why Not? With Shania Twain,” an odd and sympathetic show beginning Sunday that’s part episodic biography, part comeback tale and part confrontation therapy.

A decade ago Ms. Twain was the reigning queen of pop-country, a vision in synthetic hair and neon neoprene tops; she remains the top-selling female country singer of all time. The years since have been pure telenovela, though. Her husband and longtime collaborator, Mutt Lange, had an affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Stranger still, Ms. Twain is now married to Ms. Thiébaud’s former husband, Fred. Ms. Twain also, because of either psychological or physical ailment, more or less lost her ability to sing.

There’s much more of this, in aching detail, in Ms. Twain’s bruiser of a memoir “From This Moment On” (Atria), which was released this week. Her childhood in small-town Ontario, it’s clear, was even more devastating.

But Ms. Twain is wealthy and still famous, and therefore able to mobilize resources — family and friends, a tour bus, the cameras of the Oprah Winfrey Network — all toward her betterment.

In each episode of her show — three were made available to critics — she visits a location that’s important to her history and attempts to sing, trying to reinscribe each place with new and happier memories. She sings a little bit more convincingly each time, but the restoration of Ms. Twain’s career (and voice) is a far less compelling arc than the excavation of her trauma; that may take a few seasons.

Notably, this show isn’t on CMT or another genre-specific outlet: Nashville still prefers its stars uncomplicated. It’s among the more eccentric and intriguing offerings on OWN, which has suffered in its first few months from excessive sincerity and a shortage of appealing rough edges. (Christina Norman, the network chief, was dismissed on Friday.)

And Ms. Twain is far from a neatly wrapped package. She’s sincere in her confusion. She professes a desire to address her past and displays almost no talent for it. When she’s uncomfortable, which is often, she cackles. Despite what must be deep pain, there’s not a whit of rage to her. She can’t say an ill word about Mr. Lange — he’s “wonderful,” “kind,” “generous” — instead reserving all her (seemingly mild) anger for Ms. Thiébaud.

What this is like for Fred, who presumably has feelings too, we never learn. He was the one to discover the infidelity — in “a quite concrete way” he says, leaving it at that. Now his main business is Ms. Twain. He mans one of the cameras here, and is a steady source of emotional support. But is he just goading Ms. Twain? Is he an aspiring Danny Moder, Julia Roberts’s cameraman husband? “Britney & Kevin: Chaotic,” the short-lived train wreck of a show about the short-lived train wreck of a relationship of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, was more revealing.

Still, the most vexing, and shortest, part of each episode is the one in which Ms. Twain recruits people whose purpose is to reflect her pain, strangers serving as proxies either for Ms. Twain (a family that’s lost both parents, a woman whose husband had an affair with her best friend) or the people who wronged her.

It’s not clear whether Ms. Twain, an accidental narcissist, is interested in learning from these encounters. In the first two episodes, it’s possible she leaves these people more wounded than she found them. (In the case of a woman who endures a rough skydiving landing in the name of being adventurous, or in the name of Ms. Twain’s being adventurous, literally so.) In the third, Ms. Twain talks to a “traitor” — a woman who had an affair with her best friend’s husband — and for the first time she becomes incensed. Afterward, she’s voluble, talking about her attempts to find closure, “accepting that I may never get that from Marie-Anne — and that’s it, I gotta just carry on expecting that that will never happen.” Fred, holding the camera, doesn’t say a word.

I hope once all shows are shown... Oprah does all Shania day and play them one after another. Especially if this show is HUGE hit.

I watched the 5 minute preview: so she's working with Cory Churko. He grew much thicker goatee than on the Up tour.

Country tear-jerker

Shania Twain hits the road to recovery with ‘Why Not?’

By Mark A. Perigard

The five-time Grammy winner and country artist known for such hits as “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” and “You’re Still the One” watched her personal life implode after discovering her husband, music producer Mutt Lange, was having an affair with her personal assistant/best friend. The two divorced, Lange married the other woman, and Twain, in January, married the ex-bestie’s ex-husband.

Confused by all that?

So is Twain.

Her one-hour unscripted series “Why Not? With Shania Twain” rings of a last-ditch effort to avoid counseling.

Since her first marriage collapsed, Twain, who once performed in front of thousands, has found it impossible to sing and suffers from debilitating stage fright.

“I really lost my sense of trust and compassion altogether. That’s all gone, that’s all dead. I crashed down and became what I consider an emotional mess,” she tells the camera.

As part of her “recovery tour,” Twain revisits key locations in her past — she grew up in abject poverty in Canada — in a bus so big it should have its own zip code. The series mixes vintage performance clips with visits to ordinary folks who have suffered losses similar to Twain. In the opener, she checks in with siblings who also lost their parents at a young age. Next week, she meets with a woman whose husband left her for her best friend. At times, the camera captures Twain being filmed in turn by her new husband, whose mission — or obsession — appears to be to document her every second.

Twain, who also serves as executive producer, readily admits she is a control freak. She frets on camera about how the show will portray her. “I don’t want the public to think I’m a sap,” she says.

The title for her series, the May 15 episode reveals, was inspired by one of her favorite self-help authors. When she meets for the first time with the psychiatrist, he issues her a reality sound check about how she still idolizes her ex and demonizes the other woman. He gently encourages her to consider therapy.

Every time someone suggests counseling, Twain erupts into nervous cackling.

“Can’t we just do some things on our own? Does everybody need a therapist?”

Twain hopes her show will help others who have been wronged. She has the melody down, but she hasn’t found the words.

I cant wait to see the show and make my own mind up. I feel hurt for Shania from some of these reviews- some of them are really quite brutal topwards her. Or is it coz I feel biased as a fan and if it were say someone like Mariah Carey or Britney Spears would my views be the same as some of the critics?!
Difficult to be impartial i fear.
Anyway, either way its great to see and learn more of Shania, and i heard her say in an interview that she does a fair amount of singing throughout the show!!

Oprah's legal department couldn't get the "okay" to show them. Just like Mutt & Marie Ann during Oprah's show.

Someone recorded three minutes and uploaded onto youtube. So I got to watch that this morning; it seems when you're watching scenes while she's at home. They blocked off some photos too (unless those are the pictures you are talking about?) You can tell one of them is "horse" picture. I was watching it on iPhone so who knows if it was just horrible network connection?

Shania Twain Lays Emotional Cards Face Up on ‘Why Not? With Shania Twain’ Premiere

It’s certainly the type of therapy TV that Oprah Winfrey fans and watchers like to indulge in, and that’s why OWN — Oprah Winfrey Network — is the perfect nesting place for such a show.

“The shock of the betrayal in my personal life brought on the realization that I have lost my ability to express myself, and my ability to sing,” Twain revealed, leaving no emotional stone unturned. “I’ve lost it. I just can’t express myself.”

Obviously, things have changed markedly for Twain, as she expressed herself quite publicly in the first episode of this gripping, can’t-look-away docu-series. It’s too serious and too personal to be categorized as a reality show, but it does turn the microscope on Twain’s real life.

“I really can’t complain,” Twain admitted, and we saw that her life has improved, as she is now happily remarried and working on new music. But things are far from perfect for the woman who holds the distinction of being the biggest selling female country artist. “I’ve got a beautiful man. I have everything I could ever want in life. Why am I so unhappy?”

Looks like we’ll find out a lot more about Shania Twain and the core cause of her happiness and unhappiness as the series unfolds each week. The show airs at 11PM ET on Sunday nights.

Here's Why: The Message of Shania Twain's New Show

The irony of this needless qualification is that Shania Twain's story is, as a matter of fact, more fascinating than most. It's a story of a Canadian musician whose talent lifted her out of poverty and into the utterly Stateside genre of country music. It's a story of a girl who sometimes watched but mostly heard her stepfather beating her mother viciously, though that wasn't enough to make her write him off (her mixed feelings about her abusive stepfather are among the most nuanced and specific ever expressed on reality TV). It's a story of a wife whose first marriage ended after her music-producer husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange ran off with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud, and whose second marriage was with the ex-husband of the aforementioned best friend, Frederic Thiebaud. When Twain shares the story of the couple swap, she calls it "twisted" with a devilish grin, suggesting it's as fun to tell as it is to hear. Twain's is a story of a superstar who had it all, but who lost her voice through a vague condition that seems partially physiological and partially psychological, as a result of all of the strife.

The content of Twain's story is reason enough to share it — no pretensions of outreach necessary. Why Not? seems to want to gloss over its main service: getting Twain's career back off the ground after almost a decade of silence (her last album, Up!, was released in 2002). Indeed, in conjunction with last week's release of her memoir, From This Moment On, Why Not? is part of a cross-media campaign that will burn Twain back into our collective consciousness if it is successful. Yes, she does some actual work to back her charitable claims on the show, at one point meeting with a group of siblings who've been orphaned, much like Twain's family was when her mother and stepfather died in 1987. But even that was manipulated before our eyes for maximum watchability: When one of the Alexander family siblings broke down, unable to answer a question about missing her parents, Twain massaged her with, "You don't have to answer the question. Why don't you just tell us what you're thinking right now?" Perhaps Twain believes in equal opportunity healing through sharing, but she sounded more like a producer than a friend at that moment.

And maybe that was with good reason. Ultimately, Why Not? is entertainment and it was indeed riveting. At the end of the episode, we saw Twain writing a new song and then heard her discuss the "big decision" to share with the rest of the world a new composition. Coming from someone who's been musically paralyzed, that makes sense in theory. But in practice on reality TV, clearly it was the ending with the most satisfying potential. She got to heal; we got to hear. Win/win.

What did you think of Shania's show?

Snide Remarks Column: Shania still a Northern girl at heart

By Wayne Snider, The Daily Press

The rags to riches story of Timmins' own Shania Twain has been well documented.

The facts surrounding the life of Northern Ontario's most famous daughter are widely known, from the tragic death of her parents to the betrayals of her husband and best friend that ended a 14-year marriage.

What isn't common knowledge is the personal edge to the story, how Twain has held up emotionally through a roller-coaster of a life filled with extreme highs and lows.

This is what we discover through the new docu-drama series Why Not? With Shania Twain, which premieres on the Oprah Winfrey Network on Friday.

After watching an advance DVD containing the first two episodes of the series, it is easy to see how Shania's personal journey makes compelling television. We meet the people she relies on for support — including her sister Carrie Ann, trusted friends in her bandmates, her new husband and even a grief counsellor, to name a few.

We learn that the emotional turmoil in Twain's life has had a profound impact on her career. She stopped performing because her self-confidence has been shattered. The talent is still there, and always will be, but the will is gone.

Why Not? is about the emotionally, often heart-wrenching road to recovery for Shania Twain. It's a ride we're invited to share — literally.

Twain and her closest supporters take a cross-country journey on a tour bus. Along the way, we see Twain confront demons from the past — including a few most people didn't know about until watching the show (I won't spoil any surprises).

During the road trip, Shania and her crew hook up with a number of people who have shared similar tragedies in their lives. Their open, heart-to-heart discussions are amazing to watch. It's like they are sitting at our kitchen tables in our homes discussing their problems with us.

This is a large part of the magic involved in the series.

First, we see a celebrity with superstar status at a very human level, facing real-life troubles to which we can all relate.

Second, the person taking the journey is not egocentric in facing these troubles. You get the sense that Shania deeply cares about the other people she meets along the way, as she strives to help them and not just herself.

Why Not? may be the story of music superstar Shania Twain, but it's much more than that. It's about facing life — the good and the bad — and learning to cope. It's about self-discovery, learning we're not alone with our problems, and regaining a trust in humanity.

Twain's celebrity status may be the hook to get viewers at the start. But it is Shania the person that compels you to keep watching. We can all relate to the raw emotions she is experiencing, and even if you aren't a fan of the music, you can't help but become a fan of the person.

We can put ourselves in her shoes and ask ourselves some deep questions. How would we cope facing the same problems? Would we keep going or give up? Would we have the strength to share our story with others in the hope it may help someone else? How long would it take us to heal?

Why Not? shows that Twain is still very much a Northerner (don't worry, we've got your back because we know the term bush means forest, even if people at the Junos didn't).

From facing the ups and downs of life, to showing compassion for others, she is still the pride of the North — beyond the music.

It's a story worth sharing.
