Shania Twain ends her musical career with an emotional interview, which may break the hearts of fans. After a divorce that has consumed her completely, singer, aged 44,reveals that she has completely lost confidence in itself and she can`t go any more on the stage.

Shania has not released any albums since 2002 and has gone through hard times when her husband left her for her best friend.

Her career is about to be reinvigorated by a reality show called “Why Not? With Shania Twain “will be broadcast on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network.

In case you hadn’t heard, new-country singer Shania Twain is going to have a reality show on Oprah’s new network.

Am I the only one who finds this career move a bit odd?

Isn’t a reality show what you do on your way down the ladder of fame? Aren’t reality shows for people like Whitney Houston, who don’t have any other options?

Presumably Twain could still make records and tour, if she wanted. So why do a reality show? Is she really that hard up for money/exposure?

May 13 is the date Canadians will get Shania Twain's answer to the question, "Why not?"

That's when Twain's new six-part reality-documentary series Why Not? with Shania Twain debuts on the Canadian version of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Twain's show debuts five days earlier on OWN in the United States.

"Canada has always been my home and a source for inspiration," Twain said in a media release. “I am thrilled to share my story with Canadian audiences and honoured to have this chapter of my life on OWN."

The series focuses on the country music star as she embarks on a journey to rediscover her personal and musical strength following the controversial breakup of her marriage.

Twain also has intimate one-on-one conversations with music-industry legends such as Gladys Knight, Lionel Richie and David Foster, who provide guidance and inspiration as Twain seeks to reclaim her voice.

The debut of Why Not? with Shania Twain comes mere days after the scheduled release of Twain's memoir, From This Moment On.

And if that were not enough, on May 3 will publish her first autobiography, From this Moment On, in which she narrates from his childhood until she has lived in recent months.

After 14 years of marriage to music producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, the country star was separated from him in June last year.  In January, she married the Swiss executive Frederic Thiebaud, who lives in Vernon since.

Rumors said that Twain's husband left her life when she found out he had cheated with her best friend, Marie-Anne, who is, indeed, the former wife of Thiebaud.

"I'm enjoying a new phase of my life, I learned to value more as a woman, not to depend on. In any event, I learned much about patience and see me as an individual with values and very solid approach," she says.

With radio hits like "You're Still the One" and "Up!", Twain has released only four studio albums, and from the Greatest Hits came out in 2004 has not made any other material. Now stands ready for her return.

"I'm writing a lot, I'm working with two producers, we have about five or six songs ready. If it took me a long time why rush now? I can not say who I'm working because I have a contract ... the fact is that through these songs will be periods of light and shadow that I lived in recent years," she adds.

Shania Twain, who has won five Grammy awards, has more than 76 million albums sold worldwide and is next to Celine Dion Canada's most international demand, in addition to Nielsen Soundscan cataloged in position 10 of the artists more sellers of the current era.

Really not sure where to ask this, so I apologize if its the wrong spot. I just wanted to know if anyone knows if the show will eventually be available through Itunes? I have not seen any info on this and the network is not even listed on Itunes, so I tend to doubt that it will be. I just wanted to know if any one knew of any info that I was not aware of. Thanks.

The show, which airs on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, solves the mystery as to why the singer stopped performing and recording, but it won't likely assure her fans that a successful comeback is in the wings.

Question: Why has Shania Twain, that spunky crossover country-pop minx who sold more records than any female artist in history, stopped singing? Well, pull up a chair. Better yet, lie down on a comfortable couch, because OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network has a rather exhaustive answer in store for you.

Executive producer Gary Rosenthal (The Judds, Ruby) brings the world up to date on the vanishing star with Why Not? With Shania Twain, a new weekly reality show/therapy session that seems specifically tailored to appeal to the Oprah demographic.

In a nutshell, with her career in full bloom, Twain's former producer, co-writer and husband of 14 years, Robert "Mutt" Lange, abruptly announced he was leaving his wife. Lange had been having an affair with Marie-Anne Theibaud, Twain's friend and former secretary. After being hit with this succession of sucker punches, Twain discovers she can no longer bring herself to sing for her adoring fans, let alone write a new album full of hits.

"The shock of the betrayal in my personal life brought on the realization that I have lost my ability to express myself, and my ability to sing," Twain says to the camera in the series premiere. "I've lost it. I just can't express myself."

Fortunately, reality television is here to help, and Twain does what any woman in her situation would do: she boards a tour bus with a film crew and sets out to conquer her demons in a very public way.

Accompanied by her younger sister, Carrie Anne Brown, and largely filmed by her new husband, Fred Thiebaud (yes, the guy who was married to Marie-Anne before the messy wife swap went down), the result is a sometimes compelling, sometimes turgid program that feels equal parts emotional rescue and public relations coup.

The magical misery tour hits a few stops already chronicled in VH1's Behind the Music, such as the home where the Twain family lived through spousal abuse and rough economic times and where Shania began singing to please her depressive mother.

We also see the less shabby digs where the Twains lived in shortly before their parents were killed in car crash, forcing Shania to postpone her career to take care of her siblings, and take a trip to the graveyard where the couple is buried. That's all well and fine, but when the bus then makes a stop at the home of a young family of brothers and sisters who have also just lost their parents to cancer and a car crash so that Shania can impart words of wisdom, the show runs off the Dr. Phil rails.

"So I'm getting out on the road meeting people, finding things in common with others," Twain explains. "I want to meet people that have experienced similar things to me and know what we've been through."

Thrusting cameras, microphones and Shania Twain in the faces of suffering strangers doesn't seem like the best way to help either this grieving family or our befuddled star.

Moreover, the reality show artifice makes us question what's keeping Twain from getting back into the music business. After all, since Lange left her high 'n' dry, she has appeared as a guest judge and mentor on American Idol, and was also rumored to be up for the empty slot now occupied by Jennifer Lopez (in what has been another singer's brilliant comeback maneuver), so whatever this problem is it isn't one of stage fright.

"I really can't complain," Twain says early on in the premiere of Why Not? "I've got a beautiful man. I have everything I could ever want in life, why am I so unhappy?"

It's a good question, and one that will engage Twain's fans for a limited amount of time. Even after the first hour, however, you wonder whether her new husband shouldn't put down the camera and direct the bus driver to the office of a grief counselor to try and figure that one out.

But viewership for OWN has headed in the other direction, despite a much-hyped Jan. 1 debut that drew an average of 1 million viewers in its first week.

The week of April 18, OWN drew an average of 127,000 viewers across its broadcast day, with 52,000 viewers among women ages 25 to 54. In prime-time hours during the same week, the average jumped to 216,000, with 78,000 in her core audience of women ages 25 to 54. In comparison, an average 6.3 million watched the syndicated Oprah show each day that week.

My theory: Fans are still lining up for the familiar show they know, not yet ready to spend much time with a cable channel they don't.

Clearly, it's time for Winfrey to reboot OWN.

A little of that starts Sunday, with the 11 p.m. debut of Shania Twain's Why Not?, an unscripted series supposedly detailing the onetime country-pop star's struggle to overcome crippling stage fright and return to performing.

The dramatic backdrop: Twain is also recovering from a painfully public scandal where her producer and husband Robert "Mutt" Lange left her and then revealed he was having an affair with her best friend. (She, naturally, began dating the best friend's now ex-husband. They married Jan. 1.)

Two days after Twain's debut, at 9 p.m. Tuesday, OWN unveils Becoming Chaz, a surprisingly intimate documentary about Chastity Bono's decision to get a sex change and begin living as a man even as her rock star mom (and gay icon) Cher struggled to understand and accept her choices.

After the film, Rosie O'Donnell, whose OWN talk show debuts this fall, will host a discussion of the issues at 10:30 p.m.

As someone who has seen most of the shows already, I can say there's lot of hit and miss in OWN; something we're not used to seeing from the Queen of All Media.OWN'S HITS AND MISSES

Here's a little blueprint for what's working and not:

Working

Becoming Chaz: This documentary has two things you rarely see in so-called reality TV: an unsparing look at the subject's worst moments, and an intimacy that leaves few corners of the experience unexplored. More shows like this will make OWN a destination for insightful, honest programming about gender, race and sex.

Oprah's tweets: Winfrey and her top staffers have tried to build interest in the network's best-performing show, Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes, by posting messages on Twitter throughout the show. For fans who want nothing more than to bask in her presence, this is the next best thing to hanging with O during a screening.

NOT working

The Judds and Shania Twain: Nobody feels sorry for multimillionaire celebrities stuck on the crazy train. Watching clips of Twain singing before thousands of fans, only to freak out rehearsing in an empty hall, just makes you wonder whether she's a bit too pampered and precious.

Ditto with Kentucky natives Naomi and Wynonna Judd, whose off-the-hook neuroses could fill a couple of doctoral dissertations (their unscripted show about trying to organize a reunion tour airs at 10 p.m. Sundays). Both shows wear out their welcomes quickly, leaving you exasperated with the subjects instead of sympathetic.

OWN's new stars: None of the stars Winfrey developed in her show's heyday have new series on the channel. So figures like organizational expert Peter Walsh, sex therapist Laura Berman, cook Cristina Ferrare and ever-present pal Gayle King aren't getting traction. Time to brainstorm some way to shoehorn new appearances by Dr. Phil, Suze Orman and Dr. Oz before fans lose patience.

How many people must hurt So that Shania Twain may heal?

That's the question raised by “Why Not? With Shania Twain,” an odd and sympathetic show beginning Sunday that’s part episodic biography, part comeback tale and part confrontation therapy.

A decade ago Ms. Twain was the reigning queen of pop-country, a vision in synthetic hair and neon neoprene tops; she remains the top-selling female country singer of all time. The years since have been pure telenovela, though. Her husband and longtime collaborator, Mutt Lange, had an affair with her close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Stranger still, Ms. Twain is now married to Ms. Thiébaud’s former husband, Fred. Ms. Twain also, because of either psychological or physical ailment, more or less lost her ability to sing.

There’s much more of this, in aching detail, in Ms. Twain’s bruiser of a memoir “From This Moment On” (Atria), which was released this week. Her childhood in small-town Ontario, it’s clear, was even more devastating.

But Ms. Twain is wealthy and still famous, and therefore able to mobilize resources — family and friends, a tour bus, the cameras of the Oprah Winfrey Network — all toward her betterment.

In each episode of her show — three were made available to critics — she visits a location that’s important to her history and attempts to sing, trying to reinscribe each place with new and happier memories. She sings a little bit more convincingly each time, but the restoration of Ms. Twain’s career (and voice) is a far less compelling arc than the excavation of her trauma; that may take a few seasons.

Notably, this show isn’t on CMT or another genre-specific outlet: Nashville still prefers its stars uncomplicated. It’s among the more eccentric and intriguing offerings on OWN, which has suffered in its first few months from excessive sincerity and a shortage of appealing rough edges. (Christina Norman, the network chief, was dismissed on Friday.)

And Ms. Twain is far from a neatly wrapped package. She’s sincere in her confusion. She professes a desire to address her past and displays almost no talent for it. When she’s uncomfortable, which is often, she cackles. Despite what must be deep pain, there’s not a whit of rage to her. She can’t say an ill word about Mr. Lange — he’s “wonderful,” “kind,” “generous” — instead reserving all her (seemingly mild) anger for Ms. Thiébaud.

What this is like for Fred, who presumably has feelings too, we never learn. He was the one to discover the infidelity — in “a quite concrete way” he says, leaving it at that. Now his main business is Ms. Twain. He mans one of the cameras here, and is a steady source of emotional support. But is he just goading Ms. Twain? Is he an aspiring Danny Moder, Julia Roberts’s cameraman husband? “Britney & Kevin: Chaotic,” the short-lived train wreck of a show about the short-lived train wreck of a relationship of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, was more revealing.

Still, the most vexing, and shortest, part of each episode is the one in which Ms. Twain recruits people whose purpose is to reflect her pain, strangers serving as proxies either for Ms. Twain (a family that’s lost both parents, a woman whose husband had an affair with her best friend) or the people who wronged her.

It’s not clear whether Ms. Twain, an accidental narcissist, is interested in learning from these encounters. In the first two episodes, it’s possible she leaves these people more wounded than she found them. (In the case of a woman who endures a rough skydiving landing in the name of being adventurous, or in the name of Ms. Twain’s being adventurous, literally so.) In the third, Ms. Twain talks to a “traitor” — a woman who had an affair with her best friend’s husband — and for the first time she becomes incensed. Afterward, she’s voluble, talking about her attempts to find closure, “accepting that I may never get that from Marie-Anne — and that’s it, I gotta just carry on expecting that that will never happen.” Fred, holding the camera, doesn’t say a word.

Shania Twain hits the road to recovery with ‘Why Not?’

Confused by all that?

So is Twain.

Her one-hour unscripted series “Why Not? With Shania Twain” rings of a last-ditch effort to avoid counseling.

Since her first marriage collapsed, Twain, who once performed in front of thousands, has found it impossible to sing and suffers from debilitating stage fright.

“I really lost my sense of trust and compassion altogether. That’s all gone, that’s all dead. I crashed down and became what I consider an emotional mess,” she tells the camera.

As part of her “recovery tour,” Twain revisits key locations in her past — she grew up in abject poverty in Canada — in a bus so big it should have its own zip code. The series mixes vintage performance clips with visits to ordinary folks who have suffered losses similar to Twain. In the opener, she checks in with siblings who also lost their parents at a young age. Next week, she meets with a woman whose husband left her for her best friend. At times, the camera captures Twain being filmed in turn by her new husband, whose mission — or obsession — appears to be to document her every second.

Twain, who also serves as executive producer, readily admits she is a control freak. She frets on camera about how the show will portray her. “I don’t want the public to think I’m a sap,” she says.

The title for her series, the May 15 episode reveals, was inspired by one of her favorite self-help authors. When she meets for the first time with the psychiatrist, he issues her a reality sound check about how she still idolizes her ex and demonizes the other woman. He gently encourages her to consider therapy.

Every time someone suggests counseling, Twain erupts into nervous cackling.

“Can’t we just do some things on our own? Does everybody need a therapist?”

Twain hopes her show will help others who have been wronged. She has the melody down, but she hasn’t found the words.

Oprah's legal department couldn't get the "okay" to show them. Just like Mutt & Marie Ann during Oprah's show.

Someone recorded three minutes and uploaded onto youtube. So I got to watch that this morning; it seems when you're watching scenes while she's at home. They blocked off some photos too (unless those are the pictures you are talking about?) You can tell one of them is "horse" picture. I was watching it on iPhone so who knows if it was just horrible network connection?

Here's Why: The Message of Shania Twain's New Show

The irony of this needless qualification is that Shania Twain's story is, as a matter of fact, more fascinating than most. It's a story of a Canadian musician whose talent lifted her out of poverty and into the utterly Stateside genre of country music. It's a story of a girl who sometimes watched but mostly heard her stepfather beating her mother viciously, though that wasn't enough to make her write him off (her mixed feelings about her abusive stepfather are among the most nuanced and specific ever expressed on reality TV). It's a story of a wife whose first marriage ended after her music-producer husband Robert John "Mutt" Lange ran off with her best friend, Marie-Anne Thiebaud, and whose second marriage was with the ex-husband of the aforementioned best friend, Frederic Thiebaud. When Twain shares the story of the couple swap, she calls it "twisted" with a devilish grin, suggesting it's as fun to tell as it is to hear. Twain's is a story of a superstar who had it all, but who lost her voice through a vague condition that seems partially physiological and partially psychological, as a result of all of the strife.

The content of Twain's story is reason enough to share it — no pretensions of outreach necessary. Why Not? seems to want to gloss over its main service: getting Twain's career back off the ground after almost a decade of silence (her last album, Up!, was released in 2002). Indeed, in conjunction with last week's release of her memoir, From This Moment On, Why Not? is part of a cross-media campaign that will burn Twain back into our collective consciousness if it is successful. Yes, she does some actual work to back her charitable claims on the show, at one point meeting with a group of siblings who've been orphaned, much like Twain's family was when her mother and stepfather died in 1987. But even that was manipulated before our eyes for maximum watchability: When one of the Alexander family siblings broke down, unable to answer a question about missing her parents, Twain massaged her with, "You don't have to answer the question. Why don't you just tell us what you're thinking right now?" Perhaps Twain believes in equal opportunity healing through sharing, but she sounded more like a producer than a friend at that moment.

And maybe that was with good reason. Ultimately, Why Not? is entertainment and it was indeed riveting. At the end of the episode, we saw Twain writing a new song and then heard her discuss the "big decision" to share with the rest of the world a new composition. Coming from someone who's been musically paralyzed, that makes sense in theory. But in practice on reality TV, clearly it was the ending with the most satisfying potential. She got to heal; we got to hear. Win/win.

The rags to riches story of Timmins' own Shania Twain has been well documented.

The facts surrounding the life of Northern Ontario's most famous daughter are widely known, from the tragic death of her parents to the betrayals of her husband and best friend that ended a 14-year marriage.

What isn't common knowledge is the personal edge to the story, how Twain has held up emotionally through a roller-coaster of a life filled with extreme highs and lows.

This is what we discover through the new docu-drama series Why Not? With Shania Twain, which premieres on the Oprah Winfrey Network on Friday.

After watching an advance DVD containing the first two episodes of the series, it is easy to see how Shania's personal journey makes compelling television. We meet the people she relies on for support — including her sister Carrie Ann, trusted friends in her bandmates, her new husband and even a grief counsellor, to name a few. 

We learn that the emotional turmoil in Twain's life has had a profound impact on her career. She stopped performing because her self-confidence has been shattered. The talent is still there, and always will be, but the will is gone.

Why Not? is about the emotionally, often heart-wrenching road to recovery for Shania Twain. It's a ride we're invited to share — literally.

Twain and her closest supporters take a cross-country journey on a tour bus. Along the way, we see Twain confront demons from the past — including a few most people didn't know about until watching the show (I won't spoil any surprises). 

During the road trip, Shania and her crew hook up with a number of people who have shared similar tragedies in their lives. Their open, heart-to-heart discussions are amazing to watch. It's like they are sitting at our kitchen tables in our homes discussing their problems with us.

This is a large part of the magic involved in the series. 

First, we see a celebrity with superstar status at a very human level, facing real-life troubles to which we can all relate. 

Second, the person taking the journey is not egocentric in facing these troubles. You get the sense that Shania deeply cares about the other people she meets along the way, as she strives to help them and not just herself.

Why Not? may be the story of music superstar Shania Twain, but it's much more than that. It's about facing life — the good and the bad — and learning to cope. It's about self-discovery, learning we're not alone with our problems, and regaining a trust in humanity.

Twain's celebrity status may be the hook to get viewers at the start. But it is Shania the person that compels you to keep watching. We can all relate to the raw emotions she is experiencing, and even if you aren't a fan of the music, you can't help but become a fan of the person.

We can put ourselves in her shoes and ask ourselves some deep questions. How would we cope facing the same problems? Would we keep going or give up? Would we have the strength to share our story with others in the hope it may help someone else? How long would it take us to heal?

Why Not? shows that Twain is still very much a Northerner (don't worry, we've got your back because we know the term bush means forest, even if people at the Junos didn't). 

From facing the ups and downs of life, to showing compassion for others, she is still the pride of the North — beyond the music.

It's a story worth sharing.
