A Shania Vegas show in April?

David Foster discusses how he discovers future music superstars

By Robin Leach
Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 | 2:01 a.m.

When hit-maker David Foster presents the second of his three monthly Mandalay Bay concerts Friday night, he’s going to introduce two unknown singers he believes will be America’s next superstars, just as he did when he ran a talent contest in Pennsylvania in 2008 and discovered tiny Jackie Evancho. She has become such a recording giant that she will co-star with him at his third concert here in December.

With David, you always get surprise guests on top of the announced lineup. This Friday, he presents “Glee” favorite Charice, Chaka Khan, Paul Anka and Philip Bailey of Earth Wind & Fire, plus the two he believes will deliver knockout performances.

In an exclusive interview, David told me: “This is actually now my fifth time at Mandalay Bay. I’m loving it. Philip has the voice of Earth, Wind & Fire and my favorite band of all time. We just toured Asia together, and he just knocked it out of the park every night, so I’m so excited. And when you look at their songs and their hits, Philip has had so many, it’s just phenomenal. Chaka Khan has the voice that I always wanted to write songs for. Charice has the voice of the next everybody.

“We’ve done this ‘Born to Sing USA’ competition, and we’ll have a couple of great winners come out and sing. I’m going to add some video to this show, which I haven’t done before -- highlights of my career and all the different stars that will be kind of unique. I just talked to my friend Paul Anka, I think he’s going to make a guest appearance, and maybe a couple people like that, so it’s always exciting. I think the people honestly always get their money’s worth. I like the notion of giving people something that they just couldn’t buy in a show that has all this diversity of entertainment.

“That’s my goal. My ultimate goal is that it will be ‘David Foster and Friends,’ and you won’t even have to ask who’s there. You’ll just go ‘well, it’s David Foster and Friends,’ that means it will be really good and packed with solid singers and musicians.”

When David appeared here six weeks ago, he stepped out from the background for the first time of just being the piano player and music arranger to star as himself. “It went great. I cut my teeth sort of on the Andre Agassi events I did all those years that I hosted in Vegas, and that prompted ‘David Foster and Friends.’ It feels very natural to me, and I’m out front for all time now.”

“However, for the third show next month, which is Christmas, with Jackie she’s going to carry a lot of the show. People just love her. She’s carrying the whole show herself, she’s so professional, she’s so adult, so mature, so seasoned. For me, it’s just going to be basically playing her album, and we might do some Christmas songs. I’ll do a little Christmas stuff maybe, in Friday’s show, that would be fun. I don’t want to say I’m riding her coattails, but she’s very comfortable doing it on her own, too. She is absolutely amazing, so we’ll have fun out there. I’ve never seen anything like it ever, Robin, nothing. She’s phenomenal.

“The first time I met her was when I held a singing contest, on my last American tour, she was 8. I had two singers in every city come up, and she was one of the two in Pennsylvania. She got up on stage and blew everybody’s mind. Unfortunately, she was up against a 19-year-old big, big singer, like a(n) (Andrea) Bocelli kind of singer, and Jackie at that time was doing a pop song, not her opera stuff, or her popera stuff, and he came out with a big song and won. But you know, that only made her better.

“I knew then that she was going to go onto something huge. I was blown away with her then. I remember meeting her family, I remember meeting her on the stage, she was 8 years old. She’s already amazing, and yet she’s still developing vocally. From the time we started making her record, there was a 4-month span, and at the end, it’s almost like I wanted her to re-sing everything because the one thing you can’t have when you’re 10 years old is you don’t have the lung capacity, the power, to do the money notes, hang on them and get louder with them. And by the end of the 4 months, her lungs had developed, and she’d really become amazing. Wait till you hear her next month. Beyond belief -- a megastar! “

David is currently enjoying not only Jackie’s album success but also his pal Michael Buble’s Christmas album he produced. New Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain sang a “White Christmas” duet on it. When David starts as the senior A&R executive at Universal Records in December, he plans to dig deeper with Shania’s talents.

“To the extent that she would want to do something with me, I’d love to do it with her, but I’m not exactly the perfect person for her, but we have a great mutual respect,” said David, pouring water on speculation he could be tapped to produce part of her 2012 Caesars show. “But we are doing a show together in April, so we see what happens,” he laughed as I pointed out all three of them are Canadians!

“Michael’s Christmas album was just released, and it’s just flying. It sold 143,000 copies in the first week. I think it’s going to do 5 million worldwide. Just huge. He’s owning it these days, I don’t know anybody else that can take that slot from him. I don’t think anybody in our lifetime is going to take that away. He’s all on his own.”

I had to ask David, who is known for his uncanny knack in finding extraordinary unknown talent, if he worried about not finding more because so many are being discovered by “X Factor,” “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “The Voice.”

“That’s actually a great, great question, but I think the shows probably encourage more people to get out there and enter anything they can. But ‘X Factor’ and ‘The Voice’ can’t be right all the time, so they’re going to miss some great ones. That means they’re going to let some great ones go in the Top 10 that shouldn’t have, so I think there is a plethora out there. I think there’s great talent in every nook and cranny of this Earth.

“I just did ‘Born to Sing Asia’ on our Asian tour, and we had some phenomenal singers, one of whom was a 15-year-old Indonesian girl who sang like Sarah Brightman, and I’m actually thinking of bringing her back here to the States -- she was amazing. The two kids who entered in ‘Born to Sing USA’ will perform Friday, and they are just as amazing. The future superstars are out there just waiting for their shot.

“I can’t tell instantaneously that they’ve got ‘it,’ but what I can tell instantaneously is whether they can really sing or not. It’s the only thing I know. I don’t know if they’re a star, I don’t know if they are going to have hit records, I don’t know if they can, all I know is whether they can definitively sing or not. Being just a singer doesn’t make them a star or sell records. Being a singer does not guarantee anything other than you’re good.

“I could have never known that Michael Buble was a great songwriter. The first night when I saw him, and dragged him back to L.A., I could have never known. When I first saw Celine (Dion), all those years ago, I could have never known that she would become the polished superstar -- all I knew was that I was seeing greatness. It’s a fascinating process. I think Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid have great eyes for talent -- they have it figured out.”

After David’s show here Friday night, he gets ready to take part in the Dec. 8 opening at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles of “Story of a Voice,” a one-of-a-kind, limited-time exhibit of his friend and recording artist Andrea Bocelli. The exhibit runs through Feb. 12. On Dec. 9, the tenor operatic sensation launches his Andrea Bocelli Foundation with a gala dinner and performance at the Beverly Hilton Hotel starring David along with Tony Award winner Heather Headley, soprano Anna Maria Martinez and, as usual, some of David’s “Friends.” On Dec. 10, Andrea flies here for his third consecutive holiday appearance at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

David summed up: “I really enjoy playing Las Vegas. It’s always a great time, and for our next two shows, we’ve really got the best in store for our fans.”

I don't think it's a good thing David's not working with her on the new album. I wonder now IF there'll be a new album. When Shania said she would've spent the summer recording, I thought she meant with David, given the fact she worked with him for Today is Your Day and White Christmas.
Now, if she still has to find a new producer, the album will take longer than expected, and no one was expecting an album soon even with David as producer... maybe we'll have one right before Vegas, but we've said this for the past 5 years now. I won't hold my breathe anymore....

The author is Robin Leach. Everything he had posted before was real so I don't see any reason for this interview to be fake.

Like Tanya said, Robin Leach wrote the article so it is true. David said they will be working on a SHOW together so it's not an album. And considering the article is about artists that David has worked with in his "David Foster and Friends" Vegas shows, I assume he is talking about Shania taking part in a show in April.

From Lionel's Twitter:

"ACM Presents: Lionel Richie & Friends – A Lifetime of Hits."
Taping April 2nd with Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, & more.

Could it be that David Foster was talking about it?

Probably! I'm wondering the same thing. Although there's no mention of Shania, I bet she wants to keep it on the down low. If she is in fact taking part in this show maybe she will also attend the ACM Awards the night before.

Lionel Richie's 'Lifetime of Hits' Celebrated With TV Special

Country's biggest names had better not party too hard at this year's ACM Awards, which will broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 1. The next day, at the very same arena, many of those same superstars -- among them Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney and Rascal Flatts -- will tape 'Lionel Richie & Friends: A Lifetime of Hits,' a special slated to air later this year on CBS.

The show will feature songs from 'Tuskegee,' Lionel's forthcoming collection of duets with top country acts. Although he's best known for his funk, R&B and pop hits, the Alabama native grew up listening to the Grand Ole Opry and the era's classic country hitmakers.

On his new album, he teams with such artists as Shania Twain, Blake Shelton and Darius Rucker to reinterpret some of his best-known songs.

"By growing up in Alabama, I had a melting pot of the whole pie: R&B, gospel, country," Lionel told The Boot earlier this year. "And not just outside of town, but right through the airwaves of my city. So when I started writing, songs like 'Stuck on You' and 'Easy [Like Sunday Morning]' were actually country, but I didn't even realize that was my influence. Now, years later making this album, I didn't realize that so many of my country artist friends use those songs as the template for their lives."

Also slated to appear on 'A Lifetime of Hits' are Lady Antebellum, the Band Perry, Martina McBride and Kenny Rogers, among others. Tickets range from $105 to $205, and proceeds will go to ACM Lifting Lives, a charity run by the Academy of Country Music.

A Shania Vegas show in April

Here is the official ACM press release fo the Lionel Richie special which includes the dates tickets go on-sale.

COUNTRY ELITE JOIN LIONEL RICHIE FOR ACM SPECIAL

You may know him from his time with the Commodores (“Brick House,” “Easy,” “Sail On”) or his legendary hits of the ‘80s (“Dancing on the Ceiling,” “Hello,” “All Night Long”), but legendary singer-songwriter Lionel Richie cut his teeth on a Southern mixture of country, R&B and Gospel music as a kid in Tuskegee, Alabama. After four decades in the music business, Richie is celebrating those roots with the Academy of Country Music through the primetime CBS special ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends – A Lifetime of Hits.

Taping on Monday, April 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, this country collaboration will feature duets from Richie’s upcoming album Tuskegee along with some of his greatest hits performed by country superstars Jason Aldean, The Band Perry, Kenny Chesney, Lady Antebellum, Martina McBride, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Rogers and many more. Richie says the album was a “coming home”to the place his musical passion was first stoked.

“This place called Tuskegee is where it all began—the place where I felt that everything was available and possible. It's where I learned about life and love and the power of music, and the place I built a musical foundation that knows no genres or boundaries,” Richie said. “Tuskegee also proved the perfect melting pot for all of my influences as a writer, and as my songwriting progressed, I realized that my songs perfectly translated to country music.

Shortly after leaving the Commodores in 1980, Richie penned“Lady,” which became one of country legend Kenny Rogers’ biggest hits. Richie was also a co-writer on the iconic ‘80s tribute song “We Are the World,” which also featured country acts Rogers and Willie Nelson.

Tickets for ACM Presents: Lionel Richie and Friends – A Lifetime of Hits will go on sale to ACM A-List members on Jan. 17th and to the general public on Jan. 25th. Proceeds from the show will benefit ACM Lifting Lives, the Academy’s philanthropic arm which works to improve lives through music. GET TICKETS

I don't believe anymore she's not ready to sing live yet. I think she signed a contract and her first live performance will be her first show in Vegas in December. Period.
And no album, too. Because it would mean promotion and live performances of the first single. I'm getting so annoyed waiting for her....

Better to support Reba McEntire, my new idol. At least, she talks with her fans, she keeps in touch with them, she does concerts, albums, singles, tv shows and she's not afraid to sing live

IDK, it's been almost a decade if you count Up!, seven years since 'Shoes' which was silly. Her new stuff is tepid even if friendly and sincere.  By now I think she fell off the wagon all together after her first marriage hit the rocks... I think Shania may have an intense fear of failure after working with somebody as big as Mutt Lange. If she would have succeeded on her own with producers of her choosing maybe she would have less fears and expectations in the midst of starting over. For all her resilience and strength in spirit, she appears to have a dependent streak.

Sometimes I think it's best to throw caution to the wind and put yourself out there in these situations.  Cause if you are always hung up on whether you will sell 10 million records again, rule the airwaves and still be a superstar you'll never be free to do your thing.  For example, Alanis Morrisette had one huge album and continued to do her own thing even if subsequent releases did not fare as well. In the long run she earned respect for that.  Unfortunately, Shania's legacy seems to be inextricably linked to Mutt Lange.

I hope to be proven wrong, but the events speak for themselves: no albums since 2002, a few singles since 2005, divorce in 2008 and a Vegas revival show this Christmas 2012. To make things worse she has little fan interaction and has made empty promises as she smiles. I would rather have her be straight even if I don't agree with her.  If the fame thing traumatized her and this Vegas show is her last time in public, ok, but at least insinuate it.

I am telling you all she will be making a album announcement very soon. The fall will Likely see a release, the Summer Likely a single maybe a little sooner. The best way to promote a Vegas show is a New Album. Most of Shania's Albums are usually released in the fall expect The Women In Me. I  have been asking Tommy for his Opion now for sometime and hope he responds. You have any feedback in this Tommy ? What are your predections ?

I'd like to think Shania will have a new album by the end of the year but I really have my doubts. A new album would mean heavy promotion, not to mention singing the lead single live on TV shows, etc.. I don't think Shania is ready for all that or even wants to. Plus she has to start rehearsing and putting her Las Vegas show together. So we will be lucky if there is a new album this year.

I wouldn't say it's a rumor. Why would the Bahamas Weekly article say Paul Boyd directed a project called "I Am Just Only Looking"? I don't think they pulled it out of thin air. What it is, who knows at this point.

Lionel Richie shoots "Endless Love" music video in The Bahamas

By The Bahamas Film Commission
Feb 10, 2012 - 1:22:21 PM

The Bahamas is known as an ideal location for film making and many movies, TV shows and music videos are shot here.

Lionel Richie was recently in The Bahamas shooting his music video for the remake of his hit, "Endless Love" featuring the vocal talents of Shania Twain. Diana Ross originally supplied the female voice to the 1981 hit.

The production company, Weapons of Mass Destruction, used locations on Nassau and Paradise Island to shoot the music video featuring both Lionel Ritchie and Shania Twain, part of those scenes took place in a beach house. The project is directed by Paul Boyd who has directed Shania Twain in the previous project, I Am Only Just Looking.

Watching her be dormant for so much of her prime years has been frustrating.  I actually didn't become a fan until when Up! was released. Yeah, The Woman in Me and Come on Over were great albums, but it wasn't until Up! when I said... "man.. this woman is an amazing writer." It always takes me a couple albums to get fully convinced of an artist. Like Adele. I need to hear the next album to be completely sold. Anyway, Up! was ten years ago! And I feel like I came on the Shania bandwagon too late in the game! I was hoping she would have at least two albums after Up! by now.

My point is, be it this year, or the next, I think the next album is going to be amazing. We'll just have to wait some more. WE CAN DO IT GUYS!! :D

ACM Awards: Star duets, onstage wedding and the ACM Experience

THE TELECASTS

Reba McEntire and Blake co-host the awards together for the second consecutive year -- Reba has hosted 14 previous shows. It’s also Blake’s first Entertainer of the Year nomination.

Performers include Jason Aldean, who is nominated for six awards; Kenny, up for nine awards, including Entertainer of the Year, which he has won four times since 2004; Toby, three awards; and Miranda Lambert, Blake’s wife, has two nods. Also performing: 14-time ACM winner Tim, the Band Perry, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, Little Big Town and Carrie Underwood.

Presenters include Lionel, Taylor Swift, Nancy O’Dell, Beth Behrs, Hunter Hayes and KISS, who promised me that they will the red carpet in full makeup and will arrive onboard a monster truck instead of a limo. The emotional highlight, I’m betting, will be the onstage wedding of Christina Davidson and Frank Tucci as Martina and Pat sing “ Marry Me.”

On Monday evening, Lionel will be honored with a special taping of “ACM Presents Lionel Richie & Friends in Concert” to be broadcast on CBS on April 13. It will feature duets from his newest album “Tuskegee” released this week. Some of his greatest hits will be performed by Jason (“Say You, Say Me”), the Band Perry (“Penny Lover”), Luke Bryan (“Running With the Night”), Sara Evans and Lady Antebellum (“Truly”), Martina (“Still”), Jennifer Nettles (“Hello”) and Rascal Flatts (“Dancing on the Ceiling”).

Lionel will join Kenny to sing “My Love,” Tim on “Sail On,” Kenny Rogers on “Lady” -- and I’m hearing rumors that new Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain will be a last-minute surprise to duet “Endless Love,” which we reported Monday. Lionel used YouTube to answer five questions about Monday’s show that tops the ACM weekend.

Lionel said, “It has been so rewarding to have my songs embraced by country music artists -- they have welcomed me into their family with open arms. I’ve always felt at home in country because I was raised just down the road from Nashville in Tuskegee, Ala. This show will be a homecoming and family reunion combined, and I’m so glad to share the special moments. It will be a night that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Shania WILL NOT be performing during Lionel's special Monday night. Marc Anthony and Sara Evans will be singing "Endless Love." confuse

Marc Anthony will sing for ACM's Lionel Richie tribute

by Sigal Ratner-Arias - Mar. 31, 2012 12:34 PM
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Long before he became a salsa sensation, Marc Anthony listened to the likes of Lionel Richie. Now he'll honor the pop legend as part of the Academy of Country Music's tribute to Richie next week.

This week, Richie released a collection of his classics performed with top country acts, and is set to appear at Sunday's ACM Awards. The next day, he'll be feted at an all-star concert.

Anthony is scheduled to perform Richie's song "Endless Love" with Sara Evans during the CBS special, which will air April 13 at 9 pm EDT. In a statement released Friday, Anthony said Richie was "one of the soundtracks of my life growing up." He also called Richie an icon and said he was honored to be a part of the tribute.

We didn't know we should have been happy with her way to do things... I wonder how can she think she'll be respected again by the fans when and if she'll come out of the tomb one day

How disappointing, I bet Ritchie wished he never asked her to do the song. I'm surprised she did the video. It will be very disappointing while she is already in Vegas to not even take part in a show that could boost her career.

I think most everyone thinks this Lionel Richie special is the show David Foster was referring to. He is probably producing or co-producing the special.

This has become a joke and quite frankly you really don't "deserve" a Vegas show in December. You've been stringing everyone along for almost 10 years! How about a new album that you've been "talking" about?

Surprise, surprise. How shocking. I guess she is just too busy.....with her full-time job and all.....wait she does not have a full-time job and taking the time to sing one song on a special takes an hour or so of her time..............

So pretty much no Shania unless you are willing to pay big money for Vegas tickets, not to mention the cost of flying, staying and eating there.......

Why did she bother to record the song if she cannot perform it live ONCE???

Shania with Mutt was SO much better than this Shania...........

I'm really, really disappointed. I thought she was going to come back for good this year but I guess I was wrong. Yeah okay, she's going to Vegas but I don't really care about that. It's something that I find quite selfish. Just think of all the people that will never be able to go. And now, she doesn't even to get to perform a single song once. I keep hoping for a new album in the fall but something tells me she's not even working on it. I guess I should stop hoping because her number one priority is Vegas now...

I'm sorry if I'm saying these things but I'm starting to hate this situation. Every year we get the same hopes up until we realize it's too late and we're not gonna get anything. I think she should have put all her focus and strength into releasing a new album, an album that we've been waiting for for the past... let's say 9 years. This is getting ridiculous. Hopefully she will release the album in the fall but as I said, things are not looking that good for now.

Other than her Vegas show, Shania is no longer a performer.

Does this woman ever remember that she is a PROFESSIONAL singer who has an adoring fan base that's been waiting for her for 10 years? Sara Evans and MARC ANTHONY??!! Who promotes their FIRST single like this? They aren't even on the album! Wow... she is kinda screwing Lionel over by not promoting the song AT ALL (other than the video). If I were Lionel, I would be hella frustrated. If she doesn't release a new album or at least OFFICIALLY annouce it by this year's end, I am going to try to be done with her. I just wish there was someone nearly as good as her in the country genre so I can just move on from her already.

It's moments like this I really miss the good old days. The GH signed the end of Shania's career IMO...

So if David is Working on the show, why wouldnt shania show up, obviously she was supposed to, and she worked with David on Today, so she should feel comfortable, its just very weird, she never attends nothing, even though she will have to sing in 7 months from now,,,

Hi,

Have a little faith.  It sounds like it's not going to be Lionel singing his own songs...it's a tribute to him so maybe she picked another song and will sing it or maybe she will at least be in the audience or maybe she will have a taped tribute...All kinds of possibilities...I am hoping that she is working hard on the Vegas show right now as the time is near and there is not much time...also maybe new stuff.  I am sure she is hetically planning now as all this publicity is a good thing...happy to wait as it will be worth it when it happens.  By the way the GAC show called On the Streets had a nice little chat session with Lionel and they talked about Shania and also so did Headline Country.

Warmest regards as always,

Tonto

There is supposed to be a wedding ceremony on stage tonight at the ACM's. What an awesome opportunity it would be for Lionel and Shania to sing Endless Love after they say "I do." Ahhh.. wishful thinking....

Singing another song instead of "Endless Love" would make no sense at all.

What about all those songs she supposed to have written when she was promoting her show on Oprah and her book?? I don't buy the thing she has a contract by which her first live performance will be Vegas in December, nobody does that.
She said she doesn't want to put pressure on her by releasing an album too soon. Girl, it's been 10 years since your last studio album... "too soon" is not a word for you anymore. Get a grip on yourself and start working seriously on this supposed new album instead of buying houses all around the world.
She also said all the process she's gone through for her voice taping "Why Not?" has helped her to find her confidence again... I guess it was another commercial move to promote the show and later the book.
She's done that a lot lately...

I'm not at all surprised that Shania would not be appearing on this TV special, as she clearly has other priorities in her life at the moment.

Lionel has also recorded a one-off special for ITV to be screened in the UK this Friday at 10pm, being fronted by Christine Bleakley, where he'll be joined by guests Pixie Lott and The X Factor's Rebecca Ferguson.

It would have been nice to see Shania join Lionel for all his UK appearances as well as the US one you mentioned, but we just have to accept that it's not going to happen.

They picked Endless Love as the single and they don't even support it. Now she isn't even performing there. How silly it all is!

Um, ok. Funny, looking though all the posts you have made since joining this board in 2008, you have not made a single positive post or reply. Interesting.
