For the first time in years, there will be no official Canada Day celebration held at the Shania Twain Centre.
The centre, which has been downsized, is being used that weekend by the Timmins Police Service which is hosting a gathering of its alumni as part of a centennial celebration for the service.
Guy Lamarche, manager of tourism and events for the City of Timmins, said there is a couple of reasons why no Canada Day celebration is being held there this year.
“One is obviously the facility is already spoken for” as it is being used by the Timmins Police Service.
The other is the fact the facility no longer has a manager and is operating with reduced staff — leaving minimal opportunity for someone who can organize an event at that location.
