Shania Twain on 'New Musical Chapter': The Ram Report
Icon tells us new album is "coming out really soon" and explains how she chose producers
Rolling Stone | October 25, 2016
It's been 14 years since Shania Twain released an album of new material, the 2002 double-disc Up. And judging by our conversation with her at last week's CMT Artists of the Year event, the wait won't be much longer.
"I have new music coming out really soon, and I'm very excited about it," she told Rolling Stone Country on the red carpet. "There will be a new musical chapter."
She went on to explain that the upcoming album is her most diverse yet. That's a big statement, considering Twain is the biggest crossover success in country music history.
The superstar's new music has been in the works for several years but has hit a few roadblocks along the way. First, she had to have surgery to repair vocal cord damage caused by dysphonia. She also had to find a new producer, as all of her past albums were produced by her now ex-husband, Mutt Lange.
Twain told us last year she's working with "a couple producers," one of whom we now know is Jake Gosling, a British songwriter/producer best known for his work with Ed Sheeran, James Bay and One Direction, among many other acts. Twain's strategy in finding the right producers went way beyond Nashville's borders and instead focused on her personal tastes: "OK, who is responsible for that song that I love, or who is responsible for this record that I love or that sound that I love?" she told us of her thought process when approaching potential collaborators. "I'm narrowing it down that way, as opposed to by genre."
There's no word yet on when we'll hear the first single from the icon's long-awaited project.
I wonder if we will hear anything this week! We are pretty much half way through March at this point! I wonder what the lead single will be.
Most artists announce the release date for a single and then have a 5 to 7 day countdown on their Twitter/Facebook page. Sometimes they'll post a small clip of the song. Shania hasn't even mentioned the single yet. So who knows.

I know. It would be nice to hear even just a 10 second clip of the new song! I dont see the harm in that. It always has to be just a big mystery with Shania. She could so something clever like a countdown. I remember Justin Bieber annoucing his new single "What do you mean?" Every day he would post an instagram pic of someone holding a sign saying "What do you mean?" 20 days, 19 days, 18 days, etc... until the song was released. She should do something clever like that. But we have waited this long and it would not surprise me if she kept this a mystery until the very end of March.
I know we're all patiently waiting. But we still have over half of the month left. We know the album is long overdue but we gotta have faith in the woman. It'll be released soon. I'm sure it's scary for her. Who says she doesn't have an elaborate plan? Time will tell but until it's April 1st, we gotta believe she will stay true to her word.
If her goal was to introduce all of this at Stagecoach, then I wonder why she even wasted her time by saying that a single would be out in March. It seems that it's all going to come out in the open on April 18th.
One hour long performances are the norm for festivals. When I went to a country music festival (watershed) the headliners were about an hour long, maybe an hour and 15 minutes. They didn't come on until 11:45 pm and were over by 1:00 AM. With so many acts, they have to be short.
Yes you're right. I read it on Casa Twain on Facebook and the "new songs" line isn't in fact in the interview. The page is in spanish so my mistake... Sorry

If in fact she is on the actual show and not just doing a Carpool Karaoke segment, it doesn't make sense why she would announce everything for Stagecoach instead of at the ACM Awards.

While just looking through the net, stumbled upon a Matthew Koma interview from March 17th and he too confirms Shania's new album release of April or May...
"The next song I’m putting out is a song featuring Jai Wolf that I’m really excited for people to hear. It’s a pretty special one to me. And then, on the totally opposite end of the spectrum, I just finished producing on a new Shania Twain album that’s coming out in April or May. That’s kind of a totally different lane of stuff from my record so that’s exciting. So yeah, I’m always just kind of at it and flirting with different ideas and different projects. It keeps me, as much as it seems like it’s confusing, focused to be involved in things that are kind of all over the map."
I was thinking about it today and it could actually be the case that she contractually promised Stagecoach to play her new material there first? Can imagine that a promise like that raises the financial value of the show.
It's totally a good thought though, and I think if she was more relevant (I hate to say this word) it could work... say if it was Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, someone who is huge in country music right now. She's huge, but for her hits, not for endless love, today is your day, etc. Most of the crowds at these festivals are 18-25ish, so the 25 year olds have a memory of her from their childhood (I'm 21 and do) but she's been out of the radar so much, unless you're an avid country/Shania fan, I don't think that'd be a selling factor for the show. For the people I know who would go to a music festival, Shania twain sharing dark, new music tragically wouldn't be that appealing. For major fans, myself included, yes, it would be, because we've been waiting for so long for an album. If she was releasing music like what she had before (Man, I feel like a woman, That don't impress me much) upbeat music, that could be a different situation, but especially if it's dark, raw, whatever words have been used, I don't think that's what a music festival is looking for. Say she was doing this a decade ago, it could work. 15 years since a new album? That's a tough one, especially with how she's advertising the content.
It's the second weekend in a row that UMG Nashville keeps on posting on Instagram quotes taken from Shania's Rolling Stone interview with the same pic.
I don't know why they're doing it if there's still no announcement whatsoever....
Lady Gaga debuted a new single ("The Cure") last night at the Coachella Festival and released it on iTunes. Maybe Shania is waiting for Stagecoach? Personally I don't think it would be a smart move. Concerts (especially outside) don't have the best sound and if I was debuting my first lead single in 15 years, an outdoor concert would be the last place I'd want people hearing it for the first time.

I don't like her blond hair too, but she wears total black in this pic, so I guess she's going like she did during the RTC Tour. Plus, I think her new style reflects the album. Dark and sad songs but also happier ones.
Matthew Koma speaking about the songs he produced on new Shania's album:
" ...I just did a bunch of the Shania Twain record. It was really cool, I produced four or five songs, which was a joy. I'm really excited for people to hear because it's such a different thing than what people hear from my work. It's a country-pop record, it's very true to who Shania Twain is, but a graduation of that. "

Thats very interesting that Matthew Koma says that the album is Country-Pop. Two people from the media, that have heard a few songs from the album have described it as very organic and Country and Non-Pop sounding. But then again, they only heard two or three songs. The album is described as diverse so we will probably hear a mix of pure country, country-pop, and even retro sounding music as Shania herself describes.
Yeah! We could be looking at the lead single from Shania's new album being released Thursday night at midnight ET. Or after Shania's Stagecoach Festival concert next Saturday. Lady Gaga released a single after her Coachella Festival concert last Saturday.

Can't wait to find out if it's true... it will be a loooong week lol.
Anyway, she can't do a "Lady Gaga"... she has to announce the single somehow. People need to know she's back, it can't be a surprise.
Replying to a tweet asking him if he was referring to her playing new songs at Stagecoach, Dukes said that it's possible she will say something there but his tweet was referring to something else. One guy suggested she will sing a song during The Voice on Tuesday...
The voice would be the ideal opportunity to showcase a new song. They have great ratings. But will she have the guts to make a comeback on live prime time television? I'm not to sure... let's hope (again)
My guess would be that lead single would be "Swinging With My Eyes Closed". That is one of the first songs that she previewed to Rolling Stone back in February. Thats the song that she plans to sing at Stagecoach. There seems to be a theme with that particular song. Anyone else have a guess for what th lead single may be?

If she was going to sing on Tuesday, I would think "The Voice" would have announced it in their promo with Shania. We don't even know for sure if she'll be on Tuesday's results show. Her name isn't listed on my on-screen program guide. Only on Monday's show (2 hours). It says G-Eazy will be performing on Tuesday night's show which is only 1 hour.

Artist/Writer/Producer Matthew Koma Releases New Music on RCA Records, Co-Writes Hit For Zedd, and Produces Shania Twain
By Dale Kawashima | Songwriter Universe | July 7, 2017
...DK: I read that you produced Shania Twain’s new single, “Life’s About to Get Good.” Is that true?
Koma: Yes. Funny enough, she actually tweeted a photo of her singing my song, “Suitcase,” about two years ago. She randomly discovered it and became a fan of it, and she reached out to me, and we connected. It made for a pretty interesting conversation with her, to talk about making music together, because obviously she had such a defined history sonically, and from what kind of songs she’s known for and her perspective. And I was definitely coming from a place where I can respect that and be a fan of hers, and having an idea of how maybe to infuse that with something a bit different or an expansion of [her sound]. So it was really a cool relationship to work on songs together, because she really trusted me to kind of tear some stuff apart and rebuild. And I think she trusts me, because she knew I was able to respect the foundation which she built, and she also had the desire to not repeat what she’d done before, and [create] something different.
DK: Did you also work with Shania on other songs for her upcoming album?
Koma: I did a handful of them, actually. We spent a good year and a half working together, so there’s a lot of stuff that’s going to come out on her record that we worked on.
