Shania Twain: Pop Stars Shouldn't Be Criticized for Being 'Too Sexy'

Apparently Shania Twain and Katy Perry aren't on the same page when it comes to being sexy in the public eye.

About a week after Perry, 29, said today's pop stars need to "put it away" when it comes to showing too much skin, Twain, 48, told ET Canada in an episode airing Monday as a part of its Shania week, "I don't think [pop stars are] too sexy now."

Explained the starlet, "The boundaries are really up to the individual and then it's up to the viewer whether they like it or not."

Looking back on being criticized for showing her stomach in a music video before it was common, Twain said, "I'm very comfortable with myself. I'm not bearing my midriff for effect or for shock factor ... I'm just doing it because I like my midriff."

Reflecting on her new music, the country singer revealed that creating such a personal album brought out her "really angry" side.

Learning of her ex-husband's affair in 2008, Twain has talked about how the experience left her devastated, to the point where she "didn't want to live."

Explained Twain in Monday's show, "In real life, when I'm writing this stuff I'm probably swearing every third word as I'm working through all of the emotion that's really there."

Shania Twain Gets Personal With ET Canada

We kick off Shania Twain week with the first of a four-part intimate interview with the singer who's gearing up to release her most personal album ever.

Roz Weston joins the country cutie in Las Vegas, where she's been holding down her "Still the One" residency at Ceasar's Palace, and she opens up about the reflective process.

"I can get really angry," she admits, "when I'm writing this stuff I'm probably swearing every third word as I'm working through all of the emotion that's really there." And there's certainly plenty to process! Since the release of her last studio album UP! in 2002, she went through a rough separation from her former producer and husband of 14 years, Mutt Lange. Despite reliving emotional times in her writing, she says her new music will also be full of good vibes, after all she did fall for a man who made her feel like a woman again -Frédéric Thiébaud, whom she married in 2011. "We all have our anger and we all have our emotions and humour too," Shania shares.

Putting the finishing touches on her highly anticipated new record has been a challenge, and finding a new producer is one of the biggest hurdles she's had to face . " I just don't know where to begin," is what she thought after the split from Mutt. "What I'm doing now is listening to a lot of music and researching producers," she says.

Although her new music could be most revealing work the notoriously private singer has ever created, she hopes fans will find joy in it. "I am very conscientious about my affect on others. I care about that - my only agenda is to affect people in a positive way."

Of course Shania Twain's "Still the One" Vegas show is full of flash and glam, but she tells Roz Weston, there are also tender personal moments, like when her sister joins her on stage as a back-up singer.

"She's been there a lot behind-the-scenes throughout my career, my sister Carrie, and I wanted to go a step further and bring her out into my world, and cross that threshold from being behind-the-scenes to being in the spotlight with me and to experience that with me. It was always a dream of mine," she says.

Speaking of sister acts, will we ever get to see the pop-queens of the Vegas strip (Celine, Britney and Shania) get together for a super-show? "The thing is we rotate, we can't ever be here at the same time," explains the country star. "Sometimes I'll come in a bit early just to catch the last performer in the venue - I haven't managed to see Celine's new show yet but I will. I will eventually manage to do it", she shares.

Back in the '90s Shania Twain shocked country music conservatives when she broke onto the scene in midriff baring outfits, but 20 years later when nearly naked pop stars are hitting us like wrecking balls, her sexy image in hindsight seems pretty tame. In her new exclusive "ET Canada" interview with Roz Weston, she not only weighs in on what's now considered "Too Sexy", she looks back at what was going through her mind when showing some skin.

"I'm very comfortable with myself. I'm not bearing my midriff for effect or for shock factor," she says, "I'm just doing it because I like my midriff."

When Roz asks if she thinks the world of pop is too sexy now, she says, "No, I don't think it's too sexy now," and ads her objective opinion, "The boundaries are really up to the individual. And then it's up to the viewer whether they like it or not."

And while many stars might look back and want to rewrite a page in their fashion history, Shania stands strong in her outfit choices. "Yeah, I have no regrets about anything that I've worn," she says with pride!

Shania Twain Reminisces on Her Sexy Style

There's plenty of hubbub about the current boundaries of sexuality in music, but before a nude Miley Cyrus straddled a wrecking ball or sparsely covered Rihanna climbed a stripper pole, Shania Twain was pushing the boundaries with her sultry style.

ET Canada recently sat down with Twain, an Ontario native, for an exclusive interview, and among the topics that popped up was her boundary-pushing sensuality, particularly in the early stages of her career.

While the borders of sexuality in the music industry have since been expanded, Twain was once considered rebellious for baring her midriff.

"I was saying, 'Well, you know what? I'm very comfortable with myself. I'm not baring my midriff for effect or for shock factor. ... I'm just doing it because I like my midriff and I'm comfortable with it,'" Twain said, reflecting on the criticism she endured for exposing her midriff.

As the boundaries continue to be pushed further and further by female artists such as Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, the 48-year-old five-time Grammy winner maintains the same perspective that she had when she was under the spotlight for her midriff-baring.

"I don't think it's too sexy now. The boundaries are really up the individual, and then it's up to the viewer [to decide] whether they like it or not," Twain said.

Although she doesn't find her singing counterparts' display overly sexual, she specifies that the artist has to be proud of how she's exhibiting herself to the world.

"The self-respect is very...important, and if you're doing it against your own will and you really don't have a good feeling about it in your gut, you're probably going to regret it," she added.

Tonight on "ET Canada" we look back at one of Shania Twain’s first interviews with "Entertainment Tonight," when she was finally stepping away from a life of poverty and just starting to make a name for herself.

Eighteen years ago she told us, "If I had to get new guitar strings, that meant maybe we didn't get milk and it really meant that it was really touch and go for a long time when we were kids and so they had to make a lot of sacrifices."

Today of course there's no bigger name in Canadian country music than Shania and things just keep getting better for the star who's "Still the One" show is storming Vegas.

But those humble beginnings have given the singer perspective of what things are worth. And despite having everything at her fingertips now, she wants to pass on what she learned to son Eja. "I definitely hold back - lately what we've been doing is putting value on chores, so I never give him money for chores but I say, ‘I'm not buying you - it's too expensive - but if you want it, work it off.’"

Shania Twain may be one of the biggest stars in the world, but it's her time away from the spotlight and stage that she seems to cherish most.

"For somebody who is in the spotlight, you really love just being stripped down and taking a picture and it's really that moment and there's no glam," Twain told ET Canada. "There's something very intimate about it that makes you feel human."

Twain considers social media to be a fun tool for having down-to-earth interactions. One such exchange caught a bit of media attention recently.

One Direction's Harry Styles sent out a tweet last month gushing over Twain's musical abilities. The message gained traction when Twain quickly responded, writing, "Thank you for your sweet tweet, Harry Styles. You and One Direction are welcome to a Shania in Vegas show anytime!"

The 48-year-old country star gets even more intimate in her autobiography, Shania Twain: From This Moment On.

Super Private Shania Twain Lets Her Guard Down In Rare TV Interview

As a Senior Producer on ET Canada, meeting celebrities is nothing new, but where do you begin when you're talking to one of the most private superstars in the world? Landing an interview with Shania Twain doesn't happen every day. This intimate sit down at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas was actually more than a year in the making. Shania rarely talks to the press - she prefers to keep her private life just that - private. But after months of back and forth negotiations, ET Canada was finally able to secure a 20 minute exclusive sit down so we knew we had to do something special. And we got way more than we bargained for!

Shania, surprisingly, was extremely candid and open. Unlike other mega super stars, her people didn't even give us a list of topics that were quote "off limits". When Shania arrived she breezed right past me to sit down and talk to our reporter Roz Weston. They struck a connection right away and she opened up about pretty much everything. I also have to say that at 48 years young, Shania is even more beautiful than we remember in her 'I'm Gonna Getcha Good' days when she was dancing around the dessert in a crop top.

Of course she talked about her super successful "Still The One" Las Vegas residency which is taking her into 2014, but she also gave us a rare glimpse inside her personal. Shania told us how much she hates spoiling her 12 year old son Eja, in fact, she makes him work for his money' telling Roz, "I don't want him to think that nothing is too expensive for us."

Famous for baring her mid-riff back in the day, Shania insists it wasn't for shock factor, admitting she enjoyed "this feminine freedom that I was playing around with because I'm not in my everyday life and I use my entertainment platform for that. It's part of my joy in appreciating myself I guess."

Once deemed "too sexy for country", Shania also weighed in on today's pop stars including Miley and Rihanna who are often accused of making it more about sex than music. But Shania doesn't believe it's become "too sexy" saying, "the boundaries are really up the individual and then it's up to the viewer whether they like it or not" she says. But she quickly adds, "self respect is very, very important and if you're doing it against your own will and you don't have a good feeling about it in your gut - but you're doing it anyway - you're probably going to regret it."
