Shania Twain plans second kids clubhouse in Las Vegas, set to be Great Santa Run grand marshal

Image
Shania Twain and Robin Leach at the Colosseum on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, in Caesars Palace

By Robin Leach | Monday, Nov. 4, 2013 | 4:57 p.m.

Superstar singer Shania Twain has confirmed her second Las Vegas school clubhouse and simultaneously announced that she will serve as the grand marshal of the ninth-anniversary 5K Great Santa Run for Opportunity Village. She also is signing up her fans to enter her own team in the challenge.

Shania will welcome more than 10,000 Santa look-a-likes on Dec. 7 downtown under the screens of Fremont Street Experience at the charity’s largest annual fundraiser returning to its birthplace.

I’ll be one of the MCs at the event as O.V. fights to keep its title of World Santa Challenge champion against teams in England, Japan, Ireland and Australia. Our local Santas have won the award seven of eight years.

Backstage after her resident show in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Sunday night, Shania told me that her Shania Kids Can foundation will be extended to a second Las Vegas primary school after the success of the first one here we reported in recent weeks.

She says a third will follow near Toronto and that a fourth will be in England. That’s as a result of a unique tennis challenge her husband Frederic Thiebaud and she won last week.

High-roller fans from Canada and England made large donations to play mixed-doubles tennis, and Shania and Frederic won both matches. But the real winners will be the kids she can now help with the additional clubhouses.

Shania is on a break now as Rod Stewart returns to the Colosseum; Shania is back on the Strip on Nov. 30.

“We’re going back to the Bahamas for a few days until then,” she told me. “When I return, we have to seriously make decisions about a producer for the new album and deal with the subject of a contract renewal.”

Joe Downtown: Shania Twain to kick off annual Great Santa Run

By Joe Schoenmann | Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 | 1:43 p.m.

Next month, country music/crossover superstar Shania Twain, a fixture on the Strip, will venture downtown as grand marshal of the Great Santa Run, which returns downtown after several years at Town Square.

The Dec. 7 event, the 9th annual, includes a mile walk and 5K run and is known for drawing thousands of runners dressed as Santa. Last year, it was billed as the “World Santa Challenge,” with almost 10,000 runners dressed as Santa, more than any other Santa run.

The event is a fundraiser for Opportunity Village, a not-for-profit organization serving people with intellectual disabilities.

Twain headlines “Shania: Still The One” at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. In a press release, Opportunity Village’s Linda Smith said Twain’s involvement “is a testament as to how far this run has come over the years, and we couldn’t be more excited to flood the streets of Downtown Las Vegas with Santas!”

The race will begin under the canopy of the Fremont Street Experience and continue through downtown.

Preregistration is $40 for adults — or $35 for those on teams of five or more people — and $25 for children 12 and under. The day-of-registration fee is $50 for adults and $35 for children. The fee includes a five-piece Santa suit and gifts.

Donations of $50, $250, $500 and $1,000 also will be accepted, with gifts going to donors at the different levels.

Go to lasvegassantarun.org for more information and to register.

Joe Schoenmann doesn’t just cover downtown, he lives and works there. Schoenmann is Greenspun Media Group’s embedded downtown journalist, working from an office in the Emergency Arts building.

Twain excited for Great Santa Run

By Doug Elfman | December 7, 2013 | 12:02 a.m.

Can you walk a mile in Santa’s shoes for a good cause?

Downtown today, 10,000 to 15,000 people are expected to dress like Santa and run a 5k (or walk a mile) in the Las Vegas Great Santa Run.

It’s the ninth annual fundraiser for the mostly self-funded Opportunity Village, which helps Las Vegans with disabilities work and increase their life productivity.

Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain is grand marshal, and she’s bringing family.

“I’ve got my own little Shania team running,” Twain says. “My husband will run, and my sister will run, and a few band members. It’s becoming a personal event for all of us.”

Teams of five or more — and individual runners — can register at 8 a.m. on-site. Santas start running at 10 a.m. from the Third Street Stage at the Fremont Street Experience.

Twain is so happy to be part of our annual Vegas Santa craze. She says she’s thrilled, honored and humbled.

“I think it’ll be moving,” she says. “It’s going to be exciting, watching all these Santas run down the road” for Opportunity Village.

Meanwhile, Twain is scheduled to sing at Caesars tonight, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, next weekend and dates in January and February.

She is also running her own charity for kids in Vegas these days — Shania Kids Can.

Shania Kids Can is setting up “clubhouses” in qualifying schools for kids in need to get more access to nutritional food, social and psychological counseling and extracurricular training.

The kids Twain is trying to help are children who are growing up like she did, in dysfunctional homes.

Twain grew up quite poor, at times fending off grave paternal fights and abuse, spending some time in a homeless shelter, working hard labor jobs and providing for family members when her parents died.

But she stresses a point that social workers will tell you — kids in need can be poor like she was, but they can also be rich or middle class. Shania Kids Can is designed to help all of them.

“It’s not a stigma of ‘the poor.’ I don’t want people to think this is a poor man’s problem. It is not. It is a social problem across the board,” she says.

“These kids will grow up with fewer insecurities, way more likely to reach their potential, a lot less likely to be bullied, and be more productive in school.

“I’m doing this particular charity, because I’ve been through it, and I understand it. I’m a believer that if you have experienced something yourself, the greatest gift is to share that experience.”

So Twain hopes you dress up like Santa today and donate at Opportunityvillage.org and Shaniakidscan.com.

“It’s a great time to be doing it. Everybody’s hearts open up more in the holiday season.”

Doug Elfman’s column appears on Page 3A in the main section on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. He also writes for Neon on Fridays. Email him at delfman@reviewjournal.com. He blogs at reviewjournal.com/elfman.

11,000 Red Santa suits invade Las Vegas - for a good cause

By Wesley Juhl | December 7, 2013 | 3:11pm

An invading force of more than 11,000 Santas transformed downtown Las Vegas into a jolly, red sea of holiday cheer Saturday morning.

Even the dogs wore Christmas costumes.

The Santas crowded onto Fremont Street in spite of wintry weather for Opportunity Village’s ninth annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run.

The crowd surpassed last year’s by more than 1,000 attendees and brought Las Vegas victory over our foreign rivals. Every year the nonprofit organization competes against similar Santa run events in Japan, England and Australia to see who has the best turnout.

Proceeds from the 5K run and mile-long walk support Opportunity Village’s many programs for people with intellectual disabilities, including vocational training and employment services.

Guthrie said the money raised will help it serve between 1,800 and 2,000 youths and adults. He expected to raise more than $400,000.

“I brought half of my family,” said Circle K manager Lydia Lozada, from El Paso, Texas. Circle K was one of many sponsors for the event and provided free coffee for participants.

“We wanted to help, too,” she said, “and have fun.”

The Great Santa Run started at 8 a.m. with music and entertainment at the 3rd Street Stage on Fremont Street.

“I’ll tell you something, Santa’s watching, because outside this canopy it’s snowing,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, who borrowed a page from her husband’s book and appeared with escorts from Chippendales.

The Las Vegas Valley saw 30-degree weather with sporadic sprinkling rain and snow Saturday.

The pre-show included musical acts such as Zowie Bowie and the usual “Run, Santa, Run” song by George Dare, with the audience cheering along, “Ho! Ho! Ho!”

The “world’s only all-Elvis dance troupe,” OV Elvi, performed “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Jailhouse Rock” with all of the King’s swaying hips and panache. The drummers and dancers come from Opportunity Village’s performing arts program.

Many of the thousands in the crowd came to see the Jabbawockeez perform, which involved a person in a huge polar bear suit and audience participation.

And the crowd eagerly awaited the arrival of Shania Twain, this year’s grand marshal for the Great Santa Run.

“It’s a thrill to be here,” said the singer who is headlining at Caesars. “For me personally, it kicks off the holiday season with a wonderful spirit.”

About 40 teens in blue Santa hats from Foothill High School’s student council attended for the the third time.

“We just like to give to charity,” said 16-year-old Sammie Vasquez.

Vasquez and the student council juniors must have taken a lesson from Opportunity Village, because they are holding a 5K run at their school Feb. 15 to raise money for their prom.

The Henderson teens embodied the festive spirit of the event, laughing and dancing throughout the morning.

It is likely they will make Santa’s Nice List.

Shania Twain leads Great Santa Run to ninth consecutive victory

Image
Singer and Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain, grand marshal for the event, arrives for the Las Vegas Great Santa Run in downtown Las Vegas on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Officials said 11,201 people participated in the event. Proceeds from the event benefit Opportunity Village, an organization that serves people with intellectual disabilities.

By Robin Leach | Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013 | 10:26 a.m.

As one of the most wonderful Las Vegas holiday traditions, it also has become one of the most anticipated local events.

It may have been by the narrowest of numbers and the slimmest of margins, but it was enough for our beloved organization Opportunity Village to once again for the ninth consecutive year claim the Guinness World Record for the largest number of Santa-suited runners.

Superstar and Caesars Palace headliner Shania Twain was this year’s grand marshal for the first time, and with her own team running — including her husband Frederic Thiebaud and her sister Carrie Ann Brown — she helped send the record number to more than 11,200.

Not only was it 1,000 more than last year’s entries, but it also beat last weekend’s 10,700-strong challenge from rival entrants in Liverpool, England. Our O.V. final number also convincingly beat similar events in Japan and Tasmania off the Australian coast.

Shania, dressed in a stylish white Santa helper coat, hat and scarf, said, “It’s such a thrill to be here. It kicks off the holiday season with a wonderful spirit.” My interview with Shania about Opportunity Village’s 2013 Great Santa Run was posted on Thursday.

Despite chilly temperatures and brisk winds, Chippendales at the Rio hunks Jace Crispin and Gavin McHale still went bare chested to accompany Mayor Carolyn Goodman as she read the official proclamation and the City of Liverpool’s mayoral challenge. I joined her onstage to greet the Liverpool contingent, which held the Santa trophy for only 15 minutes before O.V. wrested it back!

“Jersey Boys” at the Paris star Jeff Leibow, Luxor headliners Jabbawockeez with a giant polar bear character, Zowie Bowie’s Chris Phillips and the O.V. Elvi troupe provided entertainment to the Santa runners as they assembled for the starting pistol.

O.V. directors Linda Smith and Ed Guthrie expected the mile-long walk and the 5K run to raise more than $250,000 for the charity’s programs that support children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Our thanks to Steve Marcus of the Las Vegas Sun for his great photo gallery. Please check back soon for more photos from Denise Truscello of WireImage and contributing photographer Tom Donoghue.

Shania Twain sleighs ’em as leader of the pack at Great Santa Run

By John Katsilometes | Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 | 4:23 p.m.

She should look more harried and appear out of breath and maybe a little dazed. But there is not an air of dishevelment to Shania Twain as she has just navigated her way along Fremont Street with a crowd of 11,221 folks dressed as Santa.

In her ceremonial role as grand marshal of the annual Opportunity Village Great Santa Run, Twain began her morning by firing up the sea of would-be Santas, “I am so excited to be here!” she shouted from the Third Street Stage.

Moments later, during an onstage interview by Fox 5 “More” co-host and unfettered Shania fanatic Jason Feinberg, Twain teasingly shoved aside Feinberg’s mic and said, “Let me use my own microphone, OK?!”

“I’ve been dissed by Shania!” Feinberg laughed.

Twain was carried along in an open Jeep for much of this adventure. She was customarily pursued by a red river of revelers who shouted her name and scrambled up close for a photo.

Twain managed to catch up with her husband, Frederic Thiebaud (if you were passed on the route by No. 318, that was him) before being swept back to the event’s green room. In this case, the green room was parked behind the Third Street Stage, as it was actually a recreational vehicle rented for the event.

It’s been a long, cold, rowdy Saturday morning, and Twain has been at the center. Yet she is unaffected, smiling easily and seeming to be soft-lit like the star of a movie on the Hallmark Channel.

How can this be after such a madcap morning?

“I think that when you’re walking into a situation like this, and it’s a charity event, the spirit is warm and welcoming,” she says. “So it’s no stress is what I’m saying. I am very comfortable, and I enjoy being around people.”

Expand that precept to the times she is not hosting charity races for 11,200 Santas, and Twain is commonly comfortable all the time. Though not dressed in Santa gear, she is well-suited for this role.

“I like what I do, and I enjoy being around people,” she says. “I especially like being in the spirit of something like this. It did, personally, kick my Christmas season off, so I just felt like part of the community spirit and not the celebrity in the center of it all.

“I am just a part of it.”

The event was wildly successful, as concerns about bitter cold were allayed by the record-setting turnout. The event served as the Guinness World Record for the most runners dressed as Santas for a single gathering in history. The Great Santa Run has been in a spirited competition with Liverpool for that honor, and reps from England turned up at the event Saturday to see if they would hold the record of 10,700 they set the weekend before last.

Along with her husband, Twain was represented by her sister Carrie Ann Brown and members of her band at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace wearing Santa jackets with “Team Shania” stitched to the back.

Twain has made it apparent that she will be involved in the community in a more active way than just performing at Caesars. When she first arrived for that two-year stretch of shows, she sought to embrace the community through philanthropy. In October, she opened a local outpost of her Shania Kids Can charity at Tom Williams Elementary School in North Las Vegas.

Twain’s inspiration for opening that clubhouse has been one of Las Vegas’ great philanthropic figures.

“I have been very open from the beginning about wanting to get involved with the charity, and I was investigating what was being done here and wanted to find out more about Andre Agassi’s (College Preparatory) School and his efforts here,” she says. “Andre was my benchmark, and from there everybody just started talking about the Santa Run, and they invited me.”

Over the years, Twain has experienced Las Vegas through the prism of a tourist. “I’ve been impressed with the food, the galleries, all the shows — the people-watching alone is really fun,” she says. “The culture I’ve known has been a visitor’s culture, you could say, and as a visitor, I have always had a great time here.”

That focus changed when Twain was placed in the superstar montage of Colosseum resident headliners, joining Elton John, Celine Dion and Rod Stewart.

“I just wanted to dive in and integrate myself,” she says. “I wanted to get to know people, and I am having a great time. That’s No. 1, just to enjoy myself. As an entertainer, I am having a wonderful time. It’s a dream scenario for me, I’m enjoying the audiences, the room is gorgeous, the sound and the whole environment is a dream scenario for me.”

Given that the day has been centered on giving, and Santa, what is Twain’s earliest Santa memory?

“My first Santa was actually my father, but I actually thought it was really Santa for a long time,” she says, laughing. “So, it worked! But I kept looking back at the picture and I was saying, ‘Wait. That’s my father!’ He got me. I was 2 or 3 years old, but he really tricked me.”

Her time for this talk is up. Outside, there are more photos to be snapped, more folks to meet and a lot more to say. On a Las Vegas morning when Santa dominated the scene, Shania Twain gave a lot back.

Shania Twain Joined by 11,221 Santa Lookalikes at Las Vegas Great Santa Run

December 9, 2013

On Dec. 7, Opportunity Village made history as 11,221 participants dressed like Kris Kringle for the ninth annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run in Downtown Las Vegas. Led by Grand Marshal Shania Twain, the iconic event beat its personal record and defeated Liverpool rivals for the “World Santa Challenge” championship.

“We were blown away by the outpouring of support from the Las Vegas community,” said Linda Smith, Associate Executive Director of Opportunity Village. “This was truly one of our best events yet, and we look forward to keeping the momentum going into the run’s 10th year.”

Shania Twain, who currently headlines SHANIA: STILL THE ONE at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace looked glamorous in a white Santa hat and chic black and white cape.

“I want to give all of you a big thank you for supporting this beautiful cause,” she told the excited crowd as she beamed from Fremont Street Experience’s Third Street Stage.

After the national anthem, sung by JERSEY BOYS star Jeff Leibow, Twain guided the racers to the starting line on East Fremont Street where she was escorted by none other than Santa Claus in a shiny, red Jeep “sleigh” provided by Sahara Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Twain led the traditional “on your mark, get set, go!” countdown to start the race and the thousands of runners took off for the 5k, followed shortly by a one-mile Kris Kringle Jingle walk.

In honor of the event’s return to Downtown Las Vegas, Mayor Carolyn Goodman declared the morning’s festivities as the city’s official “Las Vegas Great Santa Run Day.” Representatives from Liverpool’s Santa Dash were on-hand to award the “World Santa Challenge” trophy to Opportunity Village, which has now held the coveted title for nine years. Shania Twain’s Great Santa Run team won the prize for the most funds raised and The Venetian/Palazzo took the title of the largest race team.

Throughout the day, racers were treated to acts from Las Vegas’ hottest performers: Jabbawockeez taught the Santas a special dance as part of their #CokeRedMoves campaign and had everyone grooving with the official Coca-Cola polar bear; Zumba girls, Kat & J-John, warmed up the audience with exciting aerobics; Chris Phillips of Zowie Bowie had the crowd singing along to holiday classics; Opportunity Village’s “OV Elvi” drummed and danced to some of Elvis’ greatest hits; and George Dare belted out event’s official theme song, “Run, Santa, Run!”

Hungry racers stopped by popular food truck Lobster ME for a post-race bite, and event sponsors Krispy Kreme, Circle K Convenience Stores, Jamba Juice and Core Power provided runners with free food samples throughout the morning. The fun continued after the race as Hennessey’s Las Vegas hosted the official Great Santa Run after party.
